New Mexico State’s Emma Bunch has won five straight tournament this spring

She has lost to only 26 players in 10 starts this season.

Emma Bunch has played against 463 golfers this spring. She hasn’t lost to a single one.

Bunch, a sophomore at New Mexico State, has been dominant since the calendar turned to 2024. She has played in five tournaments and won all five, including her latest win Wednesday in the Conference USA Championship, winning by a shot over Sam Houston’s Jennifer Herbst at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas.

No other Division I women’s college golfer has more than four victories this year. Bunch is in a world of her own.

She started the spring with a win at the GCU Invitational, shooting 14 under. The next week, it was her second straight victory at the Momentum Transportation UNF Collegiate. No. 3 came at the Ping/ASU Invitational. Then the fourth straight was at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic before her conference crown marked the fifth straight win.

Bunch’s spring wasn’t anything to blink at, either. She finished runner-up in each of her first two starts. Her worst finish was 15th at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic. She added another pair of top 10s before the winter break.

To sum it up, Bunch’s record this year is five wins, two runner-up finishes, eight top 5s and nine top 10s. She has lost to only 26 players in 10 starts.

Rough 7th inning dooms Sooners in midweek clash against Dallas Baptist; Sooners lose 11-7

Oklahoma looses midweek matchup against Dallas Baptist 11-7.

Oklahoma was back in action on the diamond Tuesday evening as they made another trip to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This weekend, the Sooners took two of three games in Arlington. They beat a top 10-ranked Tennessee team on Saturday night and followed that up with a walk-off 7-6 win against their old Big 12 foes, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, on Sunday afternoon.

On Tuesday, they traveled to Dallas to take on the preseason Conference USA team to beat, the Dallas Baptist Patriots.

Nick Wilson started for the Patriots, while redshirt senior Grant Stevens started the contest on the mound for the Sooners. After four seasons at the University of the Pacific, Stevens transferred to OU.

A walk by centerfielder John Spikerman and a wild pitch immediately moved him into scoring position to start the game. Bryce Madron knocked him in with an opposite-field single, and the Sooners were off and running.

Dallas Baptist was not impressed and responded with two runs of their own by way of a Miguel Santos two-run home run. Jackson Nicklaus immediately led the top half of the second off with his first home run of the season—one of two homers on the night.

Things would remain tied until the bottom of the fourth when DBU broke through with three runs on four hits to make the score 5-2. The inning would prove to be Stevens’ last. In his first start as a Sooner, Stevens pitched four innings and gave up five earned runs on seven hits and two walks, while recording five strikeouts.

Will Carsten would take over the fifth for Oklahoma, and the Patriots tacked on another run to make the score 6-2. The Sooners would finally respond with a few runs in the top of the sixth. After Michael Snyder reached third on a triple, he scored on a wild pitch to the deficit to three runs. The Sooners then loaded the bases on a walk, single, and a hit by pitch, but John Spikerman struck out on a 3-2 count.

DBU left fielder Ethan Mann hit a solo home run to push the Patriots’ lead to 7-4.

In the Sooners half of the inning, Easton Carmichael singled to right field with one out in the top of the 7th. After a Rocco Garza-Gongora groundout moved Carmichael to second, Michael Snyder hit a towering home run to bring the Sooners within one run. Jackson Nicklaus hit his second homer of the night two pitches later to tie the game at seven.

From there, things went downhill as Jace Miner recorded two outs and allowing just one walk in the bottom of the seventh. However, Skip Johnson pulled Miner in favor of Jacob Gholston, who couldn’t find the strike zone. A wild pitch advanced the runner from first to second, and then Gholston walked the batter.

Johnson would replace Gholston with righty Dylan Crooks, who gave up an infield single to load the bases. DBU’s Nathan Humphreys drove a 1-0 fastball from Crooks deep into the Dallas night for a grand slam to put DBU up for good, 11-7.

The Sooners couldn’t mount a comeback, as DBU remained undefeated at 4-0, and the Sooners fell to 2-2.

Bryce Madron led the way with three hits in five at-bats, while Michael Snyder’s three RBIs led the way for the Sooners. Humphreys’ five runs batted in led the way for the Patriots.

Oklahoma will head back to Norman for their first home series of the season as they host Wright State for a four-game series this weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Dan Mullen predicted ineligible James Madison to win the Conference USA title in his weekly picks

The Dukes are not playing this weekend, but that didn’t keep the former Florida coach from picking them to win a conference they aren’t in.

Former Florida coach turned ESPN analyst Dan Mullen made his picks ahead of conference championship on Friday night, and in the battle for the Conference USA title, he took James Madison over New Mexico State.

Just one slight problem: The Dukes aren’t playing New Mexico State. In fact, they aren’t even in the same conference.

While New Mexico State is traveling to face a 12-0 Liberty team that has a real New Year’s Six shot after breaking into the College Football Playoff rankings, James Madison resides in the Sun Belt, which it is ineligible to win despite finishing 11-1 and atop the East Division standings.

Considering the Dukes should be playing for a conference title this weekend — and Conference USA had an ineligible team of its own near the top of the standings in Jacksonville State — it’s an understandable mistake for Mullen to make.

But still, did no one who looked over this graphic before it was posted notice that? Seriously?

Every FBS conference realignment change in 2024

Happy realignment day! Every FBS conference alignment change in 2024 and what’s coming in 2025 and beyond.

Today is the start of the month of July. For many, that means a jump on the July 4th festivities with fireworks and firing up the grills for some burgers and hot dogs. But today is a milestone day for college athletics as it marks the beginning of the new fiscal years for conferences. And with that comes a flurry of official conference realignment changes for the upcoming college athletics calendar.

The Big Ten is not making any changes this year, but the one-year countdown to the additions of USC and UCLA from the Pac-12 is now officially underway. The highest profile changes this year will take place in the Big 12 as the conference adds four new members and begins the final year with Oklahoma and Texas before the Sooners and Longhorns ride off to the SEC a year from now.

To keep you updated on all of the changes we are about to see in college football this fall, here is a look at the conference alignment changes going down effective today.

Sooners extend offer to Lousiana Tech transfer WR Tre Harris

With the departure of multiple receivers to the portal, Oklahoma sends out an offer to LA Tech receiver Tre Harris.

While the portal casualties for Oklahoma have risen into the double digits, it opens the door for Oklahoma to upgrade the talent that will don the Crimson and Cream.

After submitting offers to Ra Ra Thomas and Dante Cephas, the Sooners are targeting another wide receiver. This time, it’s Louisiana Tech’s Tre Harris.

At 6-foot-2, Harris had 65 receptions for 935 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022. He was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2022 after earning honorable mention honors in 2021.

He ranks fourth nationally in scrimmage plays over 40 yards (6), and fifth in plays over 30 yards (9). Simply put, Harris is one of the best receivers in the portal, regardless of his former school. He’s a big play waiting to happen and would be a nice addition should the Sooners land him.

The Sooners have lost three wide receivers to the portal: Theo Wease, Brian Darby, and Trevon West. Wease is the only notable contributor from the bunch and based on Harris’ stats, he could very easily fill that void.

Harris has also received offers from Mississippi State and West Virginia.

Here are a few of his catches below.

There’s no timetable for a decision yet but expect things to move along fairly quickly as transfers typically would prefer to get to their newest destination as fast as possible in time for winter workouts and the new semester that starts in January.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Frank Harris, Sr. UTSA

Last year it was RB Sincere McCormick – along with a solid defense – that took over on way to the Conference USA title and a breakthrough season for the UTSA program. The quarterback was pretty good, too.

The 6-0, 200-pound lefty was the main man leading the way, and now this is his team more than ever after two terrific seasons. Harris has connected on 66% of his career passes, kept the interceptions down with six in each of the last two years, and in 2021 he started hitting his deep throws a bit more. Combine all of that with over 1,200 rushing yards and 15 scores, and this might be his league, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

LB KD Davis, Sr. North Texas

The 6-0, 229-pounder isn’t huge, and he might not have the build of a normal middle linebacker, but he’s got great range and he makes a whole lot of tackles.

The 2021 First Team and 2020 Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honoree made 284 tackles – leading Conference USA with 121 stops – with 11 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for a team not known for its defense. In his fifth year, expect him to be even more disruptive.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

Full worst-to-first preseason SP+ conference power rankings

Where does the Big Ten stand nationally in comparison to all other conferences in ESPN’s final SP+ preseason projections?

The Big Ten is generally regarded as one of the nation’s premier conferences. It makes perfect sense, too. In addition to boasting some of the country’s top brands, the actual football being played on the gridiron is pretty dang good as well.

In fact, ESPN’s final SP+ preseason projections rank five Big Ten teams inside the nation’s top 17 and eight teams inside the country’s top 34. Iowa checks in No. 27 nationally according to the final SP+ ratings. Suffice it to say, the predictive model expects the league to feature plenty of the nation’s top teams once more in 2022.

On the surface, those numbers sound great for the Big Ten. How does the Big Ten stack up nationally, though? Where do all of the conferences rank according to Bill Connelly’s final SP+ preseason projections?

Here’s a worst-to-first breakdown of where each conference stands in terms of overall strength per ESPN’s final SP+ rankings.
