Georgia football offers scholarship to Taleeq Robbins

Thursday, DT Taleeq Robbins took to Twitter to announce a scholarship offer from Georgia football.

Georgia has extended a scholarship offer to defensive tackle Taleeq Robbins.

Robbins is a 2021 3-star DT out of Imhotep Institute in Philadelphia.

Thursday, Robbins announced Georgia’s scholarship offer on Twitter. The 6-foot-3, 300 pound recruit is ranked as the 18th best player in Pennsylvania and the No. 41 DT in the 2021 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Robbins holds 32 offers from schools like Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Michigan, South Carolina and now Georgia.

As a junior in 2019, Robbins recorded 40 tackles, six tackles for loss and three sacks, with one fumble recovery.

At this time, 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions lists Texas A&M as the favorite to land Robbins, but Georgia coach Kirby Smart can never be counted out, especially with defensive recruits.

Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Ole Miss Rebels Offense 3 Things To Know

The offense under new head coach Lane Kiffin and new offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby – who comes in from running the UCF offense last year – will be a whole lot different. There will still be a running element from the quarterbacks, but the Rich Rodriguez style of spread attack will be quickly tweaked.

It worked last year, though, finishing second in the SEC and ninth in the nation in rushing. The passing game doesn’t have to just be more productive, but more efficient, too.

Matt Corrall is back after throwing for a team-high 1,363 yards and six touchdowns, John Rhys Plumlee is back after running for a team-high 1,023 yards and 12 touchdowns – and throwing for 910 yards and four scores – and Grant Tisdale is still around after wanting to transfer and then deciding to stick around.

Just wait, though. There’s never been a quarterback transfer that Kiffin didn’t want to sign. A good, productive quarterback will emerge, and …

The receivers are there waiting to do a whole lot more. Elijah Moore caught a team-high 67 passes, but the No. 2 wide receiver caught just 13 passes. The passing game will spread the ball around more with a whole slew of tight end options – including Temple transfer Kenny Yeboah – and a bunch of talented wideouts waiting to break out.

There were a few transfers, but Braylon Sanders, Dontario Drummond, and Jonathan Mingo should help turn the Rebel receiving corps into something terrific.

Scottie Phillips is done, and John Rhys Plumlee might not run quite as much, but the running game will still be effective. Jerrion Ealy is a quick back who averaged close to seven yards per crack, and Snoop Conner can bring a little bit of thump. Kiffin isn’t afraid to overuse his backs – he’ll find a hot hand and stick with it.

The line was effective overall, but the stats are a bit misleading. The pass protection seems a bit better than it was thanks to the offensive style, and the reverse is true for giving up an SEC high in tackles for loss. Even so, the interior of the line should be intact with the battles going on among several really big, really young options at tackle.

Current look at Georgia’s 2021 recruiting class compared to rest of SEC

Here is an overview of the SEC’s 2021 recruiting class and where Georgia football fits in the mix.

According to 247Sports, Georgia currently has the 3rd best 2021 recruiting class in the SEC and the No. 12 class overall.

The Bulldogs currently hold commitments from seven recruits, led by 5-star quarterback Brock Vandagriff and 4-star offensive tackle Micah Morris.

The SEC teams ahead of Georgia are Florida, which currently holds the No. 3 spot nationally, and Tennessee, who comes in at No. 5 after receiving three commitments in the last week.

Surprisingly, the defending national champion LSU Tigers are slotted at No. 18 overall and behind Georgia at No. 4 in the SEC.

As for Alabama, Nick Saban has the Crimson Tide under-the-radar so far for the 2021 recruiting class. Bama is ranked at No. 46 overall and 10th in the SEC.

As the year moves on, look for Saban to start working his magic and make a run at the No. 1 spot, but for now, Alabama is preceded in the SEC by previously mentioned Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU and also Texas A&M, Missouri, Auburn, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

Arkansas is next behind Alabama at the 11th spot, followed by South Carolina and Kentucky, with Vanderbilt at the bottom spot No. 14.

There is still plenty of time in the 2021 cycle, so look for teams to start receiving more and more commitments as we get closer to fall. And especially since Coaches have so much down time on their hands to reach out to recruits.

Full SEC rankings:

  1. Florida
  2. Tennessee
  3. Georgia
  4. LSU
  5. Texas A&M
  6. Missouri
  7. Auburn
  8. Mississippi State
  9. Ole Miss
  10. Alabama
  11. Arkansas
  12. South Carolina
  13. Kentucky
  14. Vanderbilt

Georgia football makes top-nine for one of Louisiana’s top prospects

Wednesday, 2021 3-star linebacker Andrew Jones of LA released a list of his top nine schools on Twitter.

Wednesday, 2021 3-star linebacker Andrew Jones took to Twitter to announce his final nine schools.

Georgia, SMU, Houston, Florida State, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Louisville, Mississippi State and Memphis all made the cut for the Louisiana native.

The 6-foot-1 210 pound recruit plays for John Ehret High School in Marrero, Louisiana and was offered by the Bulldogs on April 15th.

247Sports has Jones ranked as the nation’s No. 710 overall prospect and as the No. 19 player in Louisiana.

As a junior, Jones recorded 137 tackles, 42 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 2 FF and 2 INTs.

Although Georgia is warming up, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, all five votes say Florida State is the team to beat.

Notre Dame Great Tom Gatewood Elected to Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame

Tom Gatewood was an All-American at Notre Dame, a Dean’s List worthy student and the first African American to be a captain on the Fighting Irish football team.  The former New York Giant can now also call himself a Cotton Bowl Hall of Famer.

What is the strangest Hall of Fame that you’re aware of?

Maybe it’s the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Perhaps its the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas – which sounds awesome, by the way.

Or it could be the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting in Phoenix.

Whatever your big interest may be there is probably a hall of fame out there for it somewhere.

Maybe your big interest is the Cotton Bowl.  No, not the stadium but the actual game that’s held each winter in Dallas.  I became aware there is a Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame earlier today.  Later I found out that Notre Dame is understandably well-represented in this specific hall of fame.

I found it out because Notre Dame legend and College Football Hall of Fame (that one is in Atlanta now, FYI) Tom Gatewood has been elected to the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame as a member of the 2020 class.

Gatewood was an All-American at Notre Dame, a Dean’s List worthy student and the first African American to be a captain on the Fighting Irish football team.  The former New York Giant can now also call himself a Cotton Bowl Hall of Famer.

For those unaware of how good of a player Gatewood was at Notre Dame, he was pretty much the best receiver the school had until Derrick Mayes showed up in the mid-ninties.  He totaled 157 receptions in his career for 2283 yards and 19 touchdowns and his 77 receptions in 1970 remained a school record until Jeff Samardzija pulled down 78 catches in 2006.

Gatewood also held the Notre Dame all-time receptions record until 2006 when both Samardzija and Rhema McKnight passed his 157.

Gatewood was on two Notre Dame teams to appear in the Cotton Bowl and played Texas in both – losing the contest to the No.1 Longhorns in the 1970 classic before getting revenge and ending Texas’s 30 game winning streak a year later.  He totaled eight receptions for 155 yards in the two games, scoring a touchdown in each.

Gatewood joins former Kansas State quarterback Jonathan Beasley and head coach Bill Snyder, Arkansas Guard and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Ole Miss running back Dexter McCluster, Texas defensive end Cory Redding and Boston College linebacker (and remarkable jerk) Bill Romanowski as 2020 Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame inductees.

Gatewood joins Joe Theismann, Ara Parseghian, Kris Haines, Joe Montana, Lou Holtz and Bob Golic as Notre Dame representitives in the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame.

NSD around the SEC: How’d each team do?

How did each SEC team do during the 2020 recruiting cycle? Georgia football holds the lead.

Georgia football closed out National Signing Day with the No. 1 ranked class in the nation, making that the second time in three year that the Bulldogs finished with the top class.

As it always does, the SEC dominated recruiting, with the conference occupying seven of the top ten spots in the team rankings.

Georgia had some tough competition for the No. 1 spot but was able to fend off powerhouses Alabama and Clemson to remain America’s top dawg.

The numbers do not lie, though. Georgia has spent more money on the recruiting trail than any other team in the country. And apparently it’s working well for them.

From Bleacher Report:

Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald (h/t USA Today) cited Georgia’s annual NCAA financial report that covered the fiscal year of July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019, and noted the Bulldogs spent $3.7 million on football recruiting expenses.

That represents a jump of more than $1 million from the previous fiscal year when they led the country in the same category.

Here’s a look at how each SEC school did in the 2020 recruiting cycle:

In order of SEC ranking

1. Georgia (No. 1 in country)

2. Alabama (No. 2 in country)

3. LSU (No. 4 in country)

4. Texas A&M (No. 6 in country)

5. Auburn (No. 7 in country)

6. Florida (No. 8 in country)

7. Tennessee (No. 10 in country)

8. South Carolina (No. 18 in country)

9. Kentucky (No. 24 in country)

10. Mississippi State (No. 27 in country)

11. Arkansas (No. 33 in country)

12. Ole Miss (No. 38 in country)

13. Missouri (No. 48 in country)

14. Vanderbilt (No. 56 in country)

So, the next closest SEC East school to Georgia is Florida, which sits at No. 8 in America. Then there’s Tennessee, which is No. 10. Is the talent gap really closing as much as Gator fans say it is?

Georgia football flips Ole Miss CB commit

Georgia football was able to flip an Ole Miss CB commit.

Georgia was able to flip cornerback Daran Branch from Ole Miss.

Branch is a 3-star cornerback out of Amite, Louisiana who ranks as the nation’s No. 672 overall player and, until today, was committed to play at Ole Miss.

Georgia had been coming for Branch, though. He took an official visit to UGA on January 24th and then visited Ole Miss last weekend.

Georgia offered the 6-2, 180 pound cornerback at the end of December and had been gunning for the Rebel commit hard, Branch told 247.

We predicted this yesterday when we outlined two players that could commit to Georgia today. The other, Cameron Kinnie, also committed to UGA today as well.
