Several UGA transfers shine in CFB Week 1

The Georgia Bulldogs gained and lost a bunch of talent via the transfer portal. Several UGA transfers played well for their new teams.

The Georgia Bulldogs gained and lost a bunch of talent via the NCAA transfer portal this offseason. The transfer portal saw record numbers of activity.

Georgia gained key players Arik Gilbert, Tykee Smith and Derion Kendrick. At the same time, UGA lost Demetris Robertson, Jermaine Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson and many more.

It will be interesting to see if Georgia’s gains from the transfer portal outweigh their loses at the end of the 2021 college football season.

What former Georgia Bulldogs made the biggest impact for their new teams?

Rat Poison: 2 overrated opponents on Alabama’s 2021 schedule

These two teams on Alabama’s schedule may not be as solid as they appear to be…

The Alabama Crimson Tide is known for playing every opponent with the same mindset: the goal is to win regardless of the other team’s record. Head coach Nick Saban calls out the media for writing “rat poison,” and gets mad at his players for buying into it.

Well, consider this rat poison.

The 2021 USA TODAY Sports’ AFCA Preseason Coaches Poll was released Tuesday. While Alabama owns the top spot, a handful of Crimson Tide opponents made the top 25.

Erick Smith of USA TODAY named five teams that were featured on the coaches poll, but could be considered overrated. Two of the five teams are on Alabama’s 2021 schedule.

No. 25 Mississippi – Smith argues Ole Miss has a strong offense but is held back by its lackluster defense, which proved an issue last season. He also believes that while the offense outshines the defense, questions surround young receivers and an unproven quarterback, Matt Corral.

No. 16 Miami (FL) – This is the season-opening contest for both teams, and they will face off in Atlanta. The Hurricanes’ defense has been strong in recent seasons, but had plenty of talent leave in the 2021 NFL draft. Plenty of unanswered questions surround the team’s NIL-happy quarterback, D’Eriq King, who suffered a torn ACL in Miami’s final game of the 2020 season.

Now, this isn’t to say these teams aren’t good. They are both storied and respected teams in college football that haven’t had the best luck in recent years, but are now finding success again.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to publish information regarding the Crimson Tide and 2021 opponents.

Texas A&M wasn’t exactly a sleeper last going into last season, but it was ranked 13th in the preseason polls and turned out to be a whole lot stronger.

Iowa State was 23rd in the preseason AP Poll and 25th in the Coaches Poll, Northwestern received just one vote in the AP, and Indiana got just one in the Coaches.

In last year’s Power Five Sleeper Teams piece, we got Texas A&M right, hit it on 8-4 NC State, and was sort of right on a West Virginia team that went 6-4.

Politely give us a free pass on UCLA – and anything Pac-12 – and we’ll all move right along on the thought that Nebraska was finally going to become a thing under Scott Frost.

The 5 Power Five programs listed below almost certainly aren’t going to win their respective conferences, and they’re not likely to be ranked all that high – if at all – but they should give their fans a fun year.

ACC Sleeper: Boston College Eagles

CFN 2021 Boston College Preview

To be totally honest, Boston College is here mostly because there’s not a whole lot to choose from.

NC State was the ACC call last year – and it should be every bit as strong again this time around – but Clemson is obviously amazing, and North Carolina and Miami performing well wouldn’t be that much of a surprise.

Boston College has the best shot of being that quirky out-of-the-blue team that pulls off a shocker or three thanks to a transformed passing attack that gets almost everyone back around QB Phil Jurkovec.

2021 CFN Preseason ACC Rankings

It took a year to transform the attack, the defense should be better, and the schedule will help with no Miami or North Carolina from the Coastal.

It’s asking too much to win the ACC Atlantic, but it gave Clemson fits last year, and … forget that. Clemson is Clemson.

Colgate, at UMass, at Temple. That’s three wins right there, and it’s followed up by getting a home date against Missouri. Win that, and the program’s first eight-win season since 2009 should be on the way.

To get even more jacked up, NC State, at Louisville, Virginia Tech, at Georgia Tech, Florida State, Wake Forest. Find the game after dealing with Clemson that BC can’t win.

Vanderbilt safety Donovan Kaufman commits to Auburn

Former Vanderbilt safety Donovan Kaufman committed to Auburn today.

Former Vanderbilt safety Donovan Kaufman committed to Auburn today. Kaufman had narrowed his search down to Auburn and Texas before making his official announcement. By coming to The Plains, Kaufman now has the opportunity to reunite with Derek Mason.

The transfer commit spoke highly of Mason saying,

“He’s a great dude. Not just for me, ask anybody around. They’ll say they love him as a person and that he keeps it real. He’s more than just a coach. He’s a very hands-on coach. Very detailed. With me and him, it’s deeper than football. He wants the best for me.”

Kaufman committed to Vanderbilt in 2019 with the final decision coming down to the Commodores, Ole Miss, and Florida State. 247Sports’ Sam Marsdale gave insight on the immediate impact Mason had on Kaufman saying,”the Commodores ultimately held onto Kaufman after Mason visited Kaufman’s father at an Alabama prison and made a strong impression.”

Through his high school career at Archbishop Rummel Kaufman recorded 177 tackles and four interceptions returned for touchdowns. As a prospect he was rated the nation’s No. 37 safety and No. 18 player in the state of Louisiana.

Kaufman will have four years of eligibility remaining upon his arrival to Auburn. After recording 15 tackles and a kickoff return touchdown across two games in 2020 the freshman safety missed the remainder of the season with a medical issue per Mason.

How soon will we see him in action?

Not clear yet.

The NCAA recently ruled that one-time transfers were to be granted immediate eligibility upon transferring to their next program. The decision will ultimately come down to the SEC who must still decide whether or not intra-conference transfers will receive immediate eligibility.

Kaufman recently moved back to his hometown of New Orleans and is eager to arrive to Auburn in early June. After a recent virtual visit with Auburn Kaufman said, “Everything was great. It’s a neat college town. I like the stadium, the facilities, the people.”

Predicting every SEC team’s final 2021 record

Predicting all 14 SEC teams’ records for the 2021 college football season.

We are less than four months away from the start of the 2021 college football season and that means many predictions will start to come out.

While many things can change between now and opening weekend, we do have a good feel of how the SEC teams will perform after spring practice and looking at their schedule.

Let’s take a look at our predictions for each SEC team’s final regular season record for the upcoming season.

Predicting every SEC team’s final 2021 record

We tried to predict the final 2021 record for each team in the SEC for this upcoming 2021 college football season.

The 2021 SEC football season will be here before we know it and the nation’s most powerful conference is hoping to bring home another national title.

With Alabama and Georgia looking to be the league’s top programs for the upcoming season, there’s a chance that the SEC could once again see two teams make it into the College Football Playoff.

We attempted to predict each team’s final record in 2021 and tried to account for the craziness that can ensue on any given Saturday in the fall (hence LSU losing to UCLA in the opening week).

Here is our final projected record for each team in the conference this season. Don’t be too harsh on us.

In-state rivals agree to play on Thanksgiving night

With the Thanksgiving night slot open, another intrastate rivalry has taken precedent. MSU and Ole Miss have agreed to play on Turkey Day.

Outside of turkey, football is the best thing about Thanksgiving. You show up at a relative’s house and make small talk before focusing on the NFL’s three matchups of the day. The Cowboys lose in hideous fashion… it’s a great holiday.

In the state of Texas, a bitter in-state rivalry that split households into two corners once dominated Thanksgiving night before — and after — the NFL added a prime-time game in 2006. Texas and Texas A&M finished their regular seasons with the most anticipated game of the year.

When Texas A&M left for the SEC after the 2011 season (thank you Justin Tucker), Thanksgiving night became boring. Texas has begun to play random opponents on the Friday after, while the Aggies try to force a hatred between them and LSU.

Since then, both schools have struggled on Thanksgiving weekend. Texas has a 3-6 record against various opponents, while Texas A&M is 2-7 vs LSU.

With the time slot open, another heated in-state rivalry has taken center stage.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss compete for the Golden Egg Trophy every season. Outside of the Iron Bowl, the Egg Bowl is the most heated rivalry within the SEC.

On Thursday, the conference announced the annual matchup will once again take place on Thanksgiving night. Mississippi State will host the game this season, while Oxford will get its opportunity in 2021.

The Egg Bowl has taken place on Thanksgiving night 23 times in its history, most recently in 2019. Entertaining would be one way to describe the rivalry, both on and off the field.

The offseason is fully upon us with spring ball over. Of course, discussion of the Texas vs Texas A&M rivalry is going to come up. Recruiting is where the two schools battle these days, but a return to the football field is needed.

Steve Sarkisian was asked about the Aggies during his introductory press conference back in January.

Chris Del Conte and Ross Bjork: Please cancel your FCS (A&M) and Group of Five matchups. We want our Thanksgiving nights back.

See Lane Kiffin’s near-perfect ceremonial first pitch to Ole Miss QB and outfielder John Rhys Plumlee

A very good first pitch.

Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin and promised a party this weekend with “some crazy things planned” going into his team’s spring game Saturday, a.k.a. the Grove Bowl, and he kicked things off right Friday with the help of the school’s baseball team.

Ahead of the Ole Miss baseball team’s Friday evening matchup against LSU, Kiffin threw out the ceremonial first pitch, walking out onto the mound in Hulk Hogan style with Real American playing for his entrance.

But this wasn’t like some of the disastrous first pitches we’ve seen before.

Kiffin’s pitch was nearly perfect, and it was caught by John Rhys Plumlee, the Ole Miss quarterback who’s also an outfielder on the baseball team.

We’ve seen Kiffin throw a solid first pitch before, so him finding the strike zone isn’t all that surprising. But when you compare it with how others have fared on the mound for the gimmicky tradition, Kiffin’s arm stands out.

The Ole Miss baseball team is playing Saturday for a lone win in the finale of its three-game series against LSU, while the football team’s spring game is set for later in the day at 5 p.m. ET.

Ole Miss College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Well that was interesting. Ole Miss pivoted a bit from a fun team that ran for a ton of yards and put up massive numbers in shootouts to a team that put up a ton of yards and even more massive numbers in shootouts.

It was a bit out of necessity thanks to a porous defense, but head coach Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby tweaked up the attack, made the passing game far more dangerous, and the results were incredible. Ole Miss was third in the nation in total offense averaging 556 yards and 39 points per game. And it’s only going to continue.

Matt Corral grew into the quarterback job and now should be one of the nation’s most celebrated statistical stars. He can run, but he’s the bomber, John Rhys Plumlee is a dangerous all-around option – he could move to receiver – and Kinkead Dent is the big-arm guy for the near future. The offense is going to move no matter what.

Losing leading receiver Elijah Moore and TE Kenny Yeboah isn’t a plus, but it’s the style along with the talent. Dontario Drummond and Braylon Sanders are back for another year – it’s their job to pick up the receiving slack.

The offensive line went young last year but it still got the job done. There’s fantastic bulk to go along with the experience – four starters are back – around veteran center Ben Brown who’ll quarterback it all.

Their job is to give Corral just enough time to work and give 5-8, 190-pound speed back Jerrion Ealy room to move. Between Ealy, Corral, and 215-pound junior Snoop Connor, the running game that led the SEC should be even stronger.
