Texas AD sparks debate over when Texas A&M game should be played

What day should Texas vs Texas A&M be played?

The Lone Star Showdown is back. The return of the rivalry sparked a debate over what day of Thanksgiving week the game between the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies should be played.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte has a day in mind. According to Del Conte, the ideal plan involves the two teams playing on Thanksgiving Day.

The Longhorns and Aggies have played on Thanksgiving before. From 2008 to 2011, the two teams followed the Dallas Cowboys’ annual Thanksgiving afternoon game with a primetime matchup. The custom was to play on Thanksgiving prior to 1994 as well. Even so, there is still some debate as to whether or not the two teams should play then moving forward.

The SEC’s featured Thanksgiving game is the Egg Bowl between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The two teams were the only college squads to play then last season.

If that is day reserved, the Lone Star Showdown could take place on the Friday after Thanksgiving where the Longhorns have played in recent seasons. For now, they will play on Saturday.

The Longhorns and Aggies will resume their rivalry Saturday, Nov. 30 in College Station at Kyle Field.

12 years ago today, the Texas Longhorns defeated Texas A&M with walk-off field goal

12 years ago today, Justin Tucker cemented himself as a Texas Longhorns legend.

The Texas A&M Aggies were set to leave the Big 12 for the SEC at the end of the 2011 season. As a result, it seemed they wouldn’t play the Texas Longhorns ever again.

Texas and Texas A&M had records of 6-4 and 6-5, respectively, and both teams were eagerly anticipating what could be their last game against each other.

The Longhorns’ offense struggled throughout the game, but with just 48 seconds left and the ball barely over midfield, hopes for a field goal looked bleak. Then came quarterback Case McCoy.

Case, younger brother of Texas legend Colt McCoy, had just 110 passing yards on the day and struggled to move the ball downfield. It was his legs that put the Texas Longhorns in prime position for a game-winning field goal.

McCoy scrambled for his life for a gain of 25 yards to put Texas at the A&M 23-yard line and set up Justin Tucker for the biggest kick of his life.

Tucker came in with three seconds left to nail the game-winning field goal, cementing himself as a Texas Longhorns legend.

This will be the last year that Texas and Texas A&M don’t play against each other in football until next season when the Longhorns officially move to the SEC.

The Texas Longhorns lead the all-time series, 76-37-5.

Greg McElroy eviscerates Aggies over rivalry feud with Longhorns

Greg McElroy calls out Texas A&M for “inferiority complex” in schedule dispute with Texas.

The rest of the college football world is catching up to Texas A&M’s antics in regard to the Texas Longhorns joining the Southeastern Conference. Several national sports analysts are weighing in on the Aggies’ reluctance to accept their former rivals into the league.

Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy isn’t impressed with Texas A&M’s temperament in its scheduling dispute with Texas. He said the following of the Longhorns’ Lone Star Showdown rivals.

“Stop playing this inferiority complex. Stop. Here’s what I would say if I were Texas A&M: I would say anytime, any place, anywhere we’ll play the Longhorns, we’re just glad to have the rivalry back. And we’ll stomp on them when we get our opportunity.”

For a school that has an entire song dedicated to “sawing varsity’s horns off” one would think they would relish the opportunity to face the Longhorns on the football field.

Given the direction of both programs, it’s doubtful that Texas A&M would “stomp on” Texas with its on-field play. We’ll soon have a better idea of the tone of the rivalry if it renews in the 2024 season.

Roundtable: Who should host the first home game between Texas and Texas A&M?

It looks like Texas is next in line to host this rivalry game no matter which way you look at it.

It’s that time of the offseason where those in the national media have a little extra time on their hands, which of course leads to nonsensical debates. Continue reading “Roundtable: Who should host the first home game between Texas and Texas A&M?”

A potential Texas vs. Texas A&M super regional is on the table

Texas and Texas A&M are no strangers to playing each other in the postseason.

The Road to Omaha starts this week as the NCAA Tournament Committee released the 2023 bracket on Monday.

Texas is getting shipped to the east coast as a No. 2 seed in the Coral Gables Regional. The Longhorns are matched up with Louisiana along with host school Miami and fourth-seeded Maine.

An interesting note with the bracket is a potential super regional between Texas and Texas A&M.

The red-hot Aggies are the No. 2 seed in the Stanford Regional and are as dangerous as any team in the tournament. They share the regional with Stanford, Cal State Fullerton and San Jose State.

Texas and Texas A&M are certainly no strangers to each other in postseason play. Texas got the better of A&M in the regional round in 2014 and 2018 before A&M flipped the script and took down the Horns in Omaha a season ago.

While it is a long shot both the Longhorns and Aggies advance past the national seeds on the road, it would set up a fun super regional between two heated rivals.

Texas softball cruises past Texas A&M, advances to fourth straight super regional

Texas softball sends Texas A&M home.

Texas softball is moving on to the super regionals for the fourth straight season after taking down Texas A&M 11-5 in the regional final.

Beating an in-state rival is always fun, but doing in on the big stage is that much sweeter.

Sunday’s victory over A&M was less of a nail bitter compared to the first matchup between the two in the regional. Texas broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and would continue the offensive outburst all game.

Courtney Day was locked in at the plate, picking up five RBIs on two doubles. Her three-run double in the fifth gave the Longhorns a comfortable 10-2 late.

Sophomore pitcher Sohpia Simpson recorded the final outs against the Aggies yet again to seal the victory.

Texas is set to take on the winner of the Knoxville Regional next week with a trip to the Women’s College World Series on the line.

No. 21 Texas downs Texas A&M 5-2 in College Station

No. 21 Texas extended its nation’s best winning streak to 15 games after taking down Texas A&M on the road.

No. 21 Texas extended its nation’s best winning streak to 15 games after taking down Texas A&M on the road. The Longhorns improved to 19-7 on the 2023 season with the 5-2 win.

Texas struck quickly in the first inning as Porter Brown lined a two-run double into the left centerfield gap to put the Horns up. A&M would tally one of their own in the bottom of the first before Texas pitching would settle in.

Five Longhorns pitchers would combine to hold the Aggies lineup to just two runs on six hits. Friday night starter Lucas Gordon tossed a clean inning while Zane Morehouse picked up the save.

Texas’ offense stuck with a nice approach in the batter’s box on a night where extra base hits were hard to come by. The Longhorns recorded 15 hits on the night. The top of the order did most of the damage, as Eric Kennedy, Peyton Powell and Dylan Campbell combined for nine knocks.

The Longhorns look to continue their hot streak this weekend as they travel to No. 17 Oklahoma State for a top-25 matchup.

Texas’ move to the SEC renews a couple lost rivalries

Texas playing Texas A&M and Arkansas is good for college football.

The revival of football rivalries between Texas, Texas A&M and Arkansas is a topic of excitement with the Longhorns’ move to the SEC.

These rivalries have a long history, dating back to the early days of college football. They have produced some of the most memorable games and moments in college football history.

Texas and Texas A&M have a deep-rooted rivalry that dates back to the late 19th century. The two schools have faced each other on the gridiron more than 100 times and were always a Thanksgiving Day staple.

The rivalry between the two schools was put on hold (aside from ongoing Twitter wars between the two fan bases) for several years after Texas A&M left the Big 12 Conference in 2012.

Arkansas and Texas have an equally intense rivalry, having faced each other on the football field many times in the past few decades. The Razorbacks and Longhorns have produced some exciting games and memorable moments, including the “game of the century” back in 1969.

Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte spoke this week about the importance of getting these rivalries back.

“I think what makes college so great is the rivalries,” Del Conte said. “Those deep-rooted family rivalries that last a lifetime. You cherish your mom and dad took you, their parents took them, your grandparents. When you can see the rivalries of schools and what it means, those are so important.

Texas vs. Texas A&M: Preview and pitching matchups

Texas and Texas A&M will square off in Omaha for the first time ever.

For the first time in over 380 total meetings, Texas and Texas A&M will square off in the College World Series.

Both teams were sent to the losers bracket after a disappointing opening day in Omaha.

Notre Dame outclassed Texas in every aspect of the game. The Irish jumped out on Texas early and cruised to a 7-3 victory.

Oklahoma sent Texas A&M to the losers bracket by taking advantage of free passes and defensive mistakes by the Aggies. The Sooners held off a late A&M charge to win 13-8.

The Longhorns and Aggies met back on March 29 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Texas A&M won that affair 12-9 in what proved to be the jumpstart to their season.

Texas was in a similar position just a year ago before rattling off three straight wins to nearly make the championship series.

Here is a look at the pitching matchups and a few players to watch on both sides.
