What the 2025 SEC schedule means for Texas’ football prospects

The SEC followed a gift of a 2024 Texas schedule with another one for 2025.

Texas knows its 2025 football opponents after an announcement this week. Somehow the Longhorns managed to receive a second consecutive favorable schedule from their new league.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian’s squad drew the same conference opponents they drew for 2024. The only difference is where the games will be played. Texas will play the Arkansas, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt at home. The road schedule with see Texas play Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Mississippi State. The neutral site game in Dallas against Oklahoma will count as a home game.

It’s not an easy schedule by any stretch. Texas will play Ohio State in nonconference before facing Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas A&M in SEC play.

In Ohio State and Georgia, Texas faces the two most highly touted teams for 2024. One would assume they would be around the Top 10 teams the following season. But for the first two seasons in its new conference, the SEC slate sees the Longhorns avoid matchups against Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Making a College Football Playoff with Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M on the schedule is an admittedly difficult task. Texas doesn’t have to beat Ohio State or Georgia, but it would need to beat everyone else. The rest of the SEC slate gives them a chance.

Obviously, Texas will need to reload again next offseason to contend nationally. Nevertheless, the team has to be excited about what SEC opponents it plays in 2025.

Alabama football’s full 2024 schedule revealed

Alabama’s full 2024 football schedule revealed. See who the Crimson Tide plays and when.

Alabama football’s schedule for the 2024 season has been revealed, showing who and where Nick Saban and the Tide will play. A few notable matchups include: Oklahoma, Georgia and Wisconsin.

The 2024 season will bring in a new era of college football as the playoffs expand to 12 teams and major conference realignment will take place.

Oklahoma and Texas join the SEC in 2024 and Alabama will hit the road to take on the Sooners in late November. Other big-time matchups featuring Alabama will take place throughout the season.

Below is Alabama’s official schedule for next season with opponents and dates.

SEC schedule dates to be released at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday night

The Longhorns 2024 conference schedule dates are set to be revealed Wednesday night on the SEC Network.

The Texas Longhorns will play in a different conference next season. On Wednesday night we will learn what days they will play their scheduled 2024 opponents.

The Longhorns opponents were revealed prior to the team’s impressive 2023 season. We know the team’s home and away opponents. Famously, the SEC designated Texas A&M and Arkansas as home teams against Texas. The Longhorns are also set to face Vanderbilt, Oklahoma (Dallas) and Michigan away from Austin.

The bulk of Texas’ schedule will take place at home. The team will play host to Georgia, Florida, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Colorado State, Louisiana-Monroe and UTSA in 2024.

Schedule dates for the Georgia, Arkansas and Texas A&M games have been released. Texas will face Georgia on Oct. 19, Arkansas on Nov. 16 and Texas A&M in Nov. 30. Facing classic rivals Arkansas and Texas A&M within a two week span has to excite the fanbase heading into 2024.

The team’s first SEC schedule is more favorable than the team it enters the league with this season. Though, in fairness to Texas, the Longhorns have Michigan in their nonconference slate.

Oklahoma will have to face LSU, Ole Miss, Missouri and Auburn on the road with just three true home games against Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. Their neutral site game against Texas will count as their fourth home game.

Where Texas’ games land might determine how favorable the Longhorns’ schedule will be next season. The schedule reveal will take place at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network and ESPN.

Who is better: USC’s Lincoln Riley or LSU’s Brian Kelly? Plus many other coaching comparisons

Lincoln Riley will face great coaches on the 2024 #B1G schedule. He would have faced great coaches at Oklahoma on the 2024 #SEC schedule. Let’s compare!

The release of the 2024 SEC football schedule is the big story in college football this week. Lincoln Riley won’t face that schedule, but it’s fascinating to contemplate an alternate reality in which he would have.

We noted a simple point:

“Riley and USC will go from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten in 2024. Had Riley stayed at Oklahoma, he would have made a change in conferences as well, going from the Big 12 in 2023 to the SEC in 2024.

“Either way, Riley was going to have to make some very big adjustments in terms of the opponents he faced. Familiar scouting reports, either in the Pac-12 at USC or in the Big 12 with OU, were going to matter a lot less. He was going to face a largely new slate of opponents in 2024. No escape.”

Want to engage in some interesting offseason college football debates? We’re here to help! Let’s compare Lincoln Riley to LSU’s Brian Kelly, and let’s compare the Big Ten coaches Riley will face in 2024 to the SEC coaches Riley (mostly) won’t face in 2024.

Here we go:

Roundtable: Which of Texas’ 2024 opponents are we most excited for?

Several intriguing matchups await the Longhorns in 2024.

Wednesday evening was the 2024 SEC football schedule reveal, which for the first time pertained to Texas. Continue reading “Roundtable: Which of Texas’ 2024 opponents are we most excited for?”

No escape: Lincoln Riley was going to face a challenging 2024 schedule no matter what

One way or another, Riley was going to change conferences in 2024, whether from the #Big12 to the #SEC or the #Pac12 to the #B1G. Let’s discuss.

We live in a world where Lincoln Riley coaches at USC, and we’re very happy we live in such a world. Yet, with the 2024 Southeastern Conference football schedule being released on Wednesday evening, it is impossible to not devote at least a little time and thought to the subject of what life would be like for Riley if he had stayed at Oklahoma.

Sooners Wire has you covered, providing Oklahoma football’s SEC schedule for 2024.

Sooners Wire’s Bryant Crews wrote this in reaction to the announcement that Oklahoma would host Alabama in the 2024 SEC season:

“The Sooners hold the all-time lead at 3-2-1 with their most recent win in the 2014 Sugar Bowl.

“These are two schools that are in the top 10 all-time in wins. Every time they meet, it’s a heavyweight battle. The Sooners handed the Crimson Tide a 37-27 loss in Bama’s last trip to Norman in 2002. It will be just the third time they have played on either school’s campus and the first time since 2003 when Oklahoma visited Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“Brent Venables has some success against the Crimson Tide, helping Clemson win two national championships against Alabama in the College Football Playoff.”

Imagine if Riley, not Venables, was coaching OU this season. Just how different would his world have been compared to his current life in Los Angeles? It’s worth taking a look in the middle of June, before we all focus on August camp and the 2023 USC season:

The SEC football schedule Lincoln Riley would have faced if he stayed at Oklahoma

Lincoln Riley could have stayed at OU, but he didn’t. If he had, he would know which SEC teams he would face in 2024. #WhatIf

It is undeniably and unavoidably one of the great what-ifs in modern college football: What if Lincoln Riley had stayed at Oklahoma, shepherding the Sooners through their transition from the Big 12 to the SEC? Riley had that choice. He could have made that choice.

He chose differently. He went to USC to start a new chapter of his life and his coaching career.

On Wednesday evening, the 2024 SEC football schedule was released, marking the first SEC schedule the Oklahoma Sooners will play when they join the Texas Longhorns in a 16-team iteration of the Southeastern Conference.

Let’s take a look at the teams Lincoln Riley could have played, with help from our friends at Sooners Wire, whom you should follow for complete Oklahoma sports coverage:
