5 lesser-known offensive tackle prospects Seahawks could target in 2021

The Seattle Seahawks are unlikely to snag one of the top few tackle prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft, but these five could be steals.

Offensive tackle will be a clear position of need for the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, with both Cedric Ogbuehi and Chad Wheeler set to hit free agency after the 2020 season. In Draftwire’s most recent way-too-early mock draft, the Seahawks make their first selection at No. 24, which likely puts them out of the range of top tackle prospects Penei Sewell (Oregon) and Walker Little (Stanford).

Although Texas’ Samuel Cosmi and Alabama’s Alex Leatherwood may well be available by the time that Seattle is on the clock, the Seahawks have other needs that they could potentially address in Round One.

Fortunately, the 2021 draft class contains a number of tackles that are flying under the radar and could end up as dark-horse pickups on day two or day 3 of the draft. Here are five lesser-known players that could be steals for the Seahawks

Broncos LT Garett Bolles posts impressive workout video on Twitter

Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles has been putting in work in this offseason!

Denver Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles posted an impressive workout video on his Twitter page on Wednesday.

As of Friday afternoon, the video has 108,000 views.

Bolles has averaged almost one penalty per game in his career and he’s certainly not a fan favorite in Denver.

“this video was flagged for holding…..,” @Chile__Relleno_ commented on Twitter.

Despite trolling from fans, Bolles has been active in the community.

The former first-round pick is working to become more consistent and there were signs of improvement last season.

As Mase Denver of BSN Denver pointed out on Twitter earlier this offseason, Bolles played much better after the Broncos switched to Drew Lock at quarterback late last season.

“In the last five weeks — with Drew Lock as the QB — he allowed one pressure every 46.8 pass-rush snaps, per PFF,” Mason wrote on April 30. “That ranked 9th of the 87 OTs who played at least 50 snaps in Weeks 13-17.”

Bolles will compete with Elijah Wilkinson for a starting job this summer.

Samuel Cosmi named most indispensable non-QB per 247Sports

When it comes to the non quarterbacks, who is the most indispensable for Texas? 247Sports named Samuel Cosmi.

For every football team across the nation, the quarterback is always the most important piece for any football team. Much the reason why at the NFL level, they are the highest paid position across the league. If you don’t have a quarterback, your opportunity to win is slim. Who would be the second-most essential player on a team? Usually if falls under one of the “money five” positions, the top five positions for any football team. A quarterback, blindside blocking tackle, wide receiver, pass rusher or cornerback.

According to Chris Hummer of 247Sports that player would starting left tackle Samuel Cosmi. Although as Hummer points out it could be linebacker Joseph Ossai, who is being asked to be the team’s new quarterback hunter.

This could easily be standout linebacker Joseph Ossai, who was one of the only constants on defense for Texas a season ago. But I’ll lean with the expertise of Horns247 senior writer Jeff Howe, who stumped for Cosmi. For those unfamiliar, Cosmi is likely Texas’ best offensive line prospect in a decade. He’s a lockdown presence at left tackle and hugely important in keeping Sam Ehlinger clean, especially when you consider how many hits Ehlinger already takes per game on designed runs. There’s also the fact that Texas’ offensive tackles, especially with right tackle Derek Kerstetter moving inside to center, is an inexperienced group outside of the potential All-American. If Cosmi goes down, the Longhorns are in trouble.

It is true that the Longhorns would be in trouble if Cosmi were to go down. The players behind him in the depth chart lack the experience of Samuel. Not only that but Cosmi is one of the top offensive tackles in the country behind Oregon’s Penei Sewell. Both are viewed as top 10 selections in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. The best friend of a quarterback will always be the man who blocks his blindside, so for the Longhorns Cosmi would be the most indispensable non quarterback for them.

Countdown to Texas Football: Best to wear No. 79

The countdown to the season continues with 79. The best to wear the number was Terry Tausch who played for Texas from 1978-81.

Longhorns Wire is continuing the series of jersey numbers to match the days until the Texas  kicks off the season. On Thursday we find ourselves remembering number 79. Continue reading “Countdown to Texas Football: Best to wear No. 79”

Why former Jets LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson missed just 1 snap in his 10-year career

D’Brickashaw Ferguson never missed a game in his 10-year career and only missed one snap because of a trick play.

D’Brickashaw Ferguson epitomized durability during his 10-year career with the Jets.

After the Jets drafted Ferguson fourth overall out of Virginia in 2006, he proved to be one of the best offensive linemen in franchise history and started every game he played in for New York. Not only did he start all 160 possible games, but he also played in every offensive snap for the Jets.

Except for one.

Ferguson finished with an absurd 99.991 percent snap share over his career and the one snap he missed wasn’t because of injury. As Good Morning Football’s Kyle Brandt explained, the Jets decided to pull Ferguson in the final game of the 2008 season to run a lateral play in a last-ditch effort to beat the Dolphins.

Down by a touchdown with seven seconds to play on their own four-yard line, the Jets attempted to pull off an incredible feat and go 96 yards for a game-tying score. Wide receiver Brad Smith took a direct snap, passed the ball to Leon Washington, who lateraled it to Laverneous Coles. Three laterals later, the Dolphins recovered the ball and the game ended in a Jets loss. Led by Brett Favre, the Jets’ playoff hopes that season disintegrated and they finished third in the division.

If Ferguson had played that snap, he likely would have beaten Joe Thomas’ snap streak of 10,363 in a row. Ferguson finished his career with a total of 10,707 snaps.

The Jets haven’t seen a quality tackle since Ferguson retired after the 2015 season, but they’re hoping they found a solid one in rookie Mekhi Becton. Becton was the first offensive lineman to be drafted by the Jets in the first round since Ferguson and Nick Mangold went Nos. 4 and 29.

Ryan Clady says Garett Bolles has shown ‘a lot of improvement’

Broncos all-time great left tackle Ryan Clady says he has seen some improvement from current left tackle Garett Bolles.

Ryan Clady was one of the best (perhaps the best) left tackles in Broncos history. He earned four Pro Bowl nods and two first-team All-Pro selections during his time with Denver and he received a Super Bowl ring in 2015 (though he was injured for that season).

Earlier this week, Clady went on 104.3 The Fan and spoke with Nick Ferguson and Cecil Lammey about Garett Bolles, the Broncos’ current left tackle.

“I think he’s definitely had a well-documented slow start to his career,” Clady said. “I’ve seen a lot of improvement — he’s definitely put some work in. Later on in this past season, the 2019 season, he was playing at a much higher level.”

That’s the good news. The bad news? There’s still a lot to improve.

“One of the main things is hands with him,” Clady said. “He’s got some pretty good feet, which is what you need as a left tackle. But I think his hands and his awareness, too — a lot of those holding problems can somewhat be avoided with just learning the game more and having awareness of positions you’re in.”

Bolles has averaged nearly one penalty per game in his career. After earning $1,969,351 this season, Bolles will become an unrestricted free agent in 2021 after Denver opted to decline his fifth-year option for next season.

Denver Broncos depth chart prediction: Offensive line

Which offensive linemen will start for the Broncos this season?

As we continue our 2020 depth chart prediction series for the Denver Broncos, today we’re going to be looking at the offensive line.

Previously, we predicted the QBRB, TE and WR depth charts.

Here’s our way-too-early prediction for the Broncos’ offensive line:

LT LG C RG RT
Garett Bolles Dalton Risner Lloyd Cushenberry III Graham Glasgow Ja’Wuan James
Elijah Wilkinson Austin Schlottmann Patrick Morris Netane Muti Calvin Anderson
Tyler Jones Nico Falah Quinn Bailey Jake Rodgers

For the sake of simplicity, each player is only listed once but there could be a single player who ends up serving as a backup for multiple positions (for example, Wilkinson could be the top backup guard and top backup tackle).

Unless Wilkinson has an amazing summer and upsets Bolles for a starting job, the starting five seems pretty easy to predict. The backup spots are where things get interesting.

Wilkinson seems to be a lock and Muti will undoubtedly make the 53-man roster. Depending on how many offensive linemen Denver carries, there might be just one opening after Wilkinson and Muti.

Some of the offensive linemen that don’t make the active roster will end up on the Broncos’ practice squad. Anderson could be a dark horse to watch for this summer but Schlottmann provides depth at two positions, which might make him more likely to make the team.

The backup (and perhaps left tackle) jobs will be sorted out this summer, assuming Denver will be able to hold a training camp this summer.

NFL Network connects Broncos to left tackle Jason Peters

The Broncos are among teams lurking while the Eagles negotiate with Jason Peters, according to NFL Network.

Jason Peters, a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, could be a fit for the Broncos at left tackle.

Peters, 38, has told friends that if Tom Brady can play into his 40s, he can too, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

“He’s still out there, he’s sending out workout videos to let people know he feels really good,” Garafolo said. “He’s moving really good . . . [the Eagles] have been in communication, nothing really happening right now . . . there are so other teams involved right now. No one seems to be in a great rush.”

Among the other teams who “lurk” are the Broncos, Browns and Jets, according to fellow NFL Network reporter James Palmer.

After not selecting any offensive tackles in the draft, Denver GM John Elway and coach Vic Fangio said Garett Bolles and Elijah Wilkinson will compete for starting duties this summer. Peters would be an upgrade over either of those players — if he can stay healthy.

Peters missed three games in 2019, nine games in 2017, two games in 2015, two games in 2011, three games in 2010 and one game in 2009.
