Commanders sign offensive tackle Drew Himmelman

The Commanders add some potential depth to the offensive line.

The Washington Commanders added to the offensive line Friday by signing offensive tackle Drew Himmelman. If the name sounds somewhat familiar to you, it’s because the Commanders initially claimed Himmelman off waivers last May. However, he failed his physical, and Washington released him.

A two-year starter at left tackle for Illinois State, Himmelman was undrafted in the 2021 NFL draft. He was named an FCS first-team All-American in 2019. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos.

The 6-foot-9 Himmelman has yet to play in an NFL game.

The Commanders need help on the offensive line. Himmelman’s signing does not impact that. Himmelman is merely a depth signing for Washington, who has a chance to earn a roster spot with a strong offseason.

Trai Turner and Wes Schweitzer are among Washington’s free agents along the offensive line. Schweitzer could return, but Turner’s potential return seems doubtful.

Lions hold a tryout for TE Drew Himmelman

Lions hold a tryout for TE Drew Himmelman, who played OT for the Broncos in 2021

There was an unexpected Detroit Lions mention on the NFL’s transaction wire on Thursday. Per the league’s official log, the Lions held a tryout for second-year player Drew Himmelman.

Listing Himmelman as a tight end is interesting. The 6-foot-9, 315-pound Illinois State product entered the NFL in 2021 as an offensive tackle. Himmelman even saw time on the Denver Broncos active roster at the end of 2021 as a tackle. The Commanders signed him earlier this offseason but Himmelman failed his physical with Washington.

The Lions already have quite a crowd at tight end in training camp. Detroit had eight TEs active in Thursday’s practice, a number that includes recent acquisition Devin Funchess and two undrafted rookies, Derrick Deese Jr. and Nolan Givan. Second-year players Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra are also competing with veteran free agent Garrett Griffin and fifth-round rookie James Mitchell to back up T.J. Hockenson.

It could be an error on the NFL’s part in listing Himmelman as a TE. The Lions do have room to add competition to the reserve offensive tackle room with vet Dan Skipper still absent on the non-football illness list.

Himmelman was not signed as of press time.

Broncos cut 4 players to make room on roster for UDFAs signings

ICYMI: Broncos waived OLB Andre Mintze, CB Cortez Davis, OT Drew Himmelman and TE Shaun Beyer. Denver’s now at the 90-man offseason roster limit.

The Denver Broncos cut four players last week to make room on the 90-man offseason roster for their 13 undrafted free agents, the team announced.

The cuts started on Thursday with outside linebacker Andre Mintze, who joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt last year. Denver has a crowded OLB room and Mintze apparently ranked near the bottom of the depth chart.

After that, the Broncos waived guard Zack Johnson, offensive tackle Drew Himmelman and tight end Shaun Beyer ahead of the start of their rookie minicamp last Friday. Following those moves, Denver’s roster now stands at the 90-man offseason limit.

Story update: Johnson was re-signed on Monday. To make room for Johnson, cornerback Cortez Davis was waived.

The Broncos also recently announced that they re-signed veteran tight end Eric Saubert to a one-year contract. Saubert (6-5, 253 pounds) played in all 17 games with Denver last year (four starts), serving primarily as a blocker (he caught eight passes for 47 yards). Saubert was also a key special teams player for the Broncos in 2021.

Following Saubert’s return, Denver has a somewhat crowded tight end room. Saubert joins Albert Okwuegbunam, Eric Tomlinson, third-round pick Greg Dulcich, Dylan Parham and Rodney Williams at the position.

The Broncos will begin trimming the roster from 90 players down to 53 in August, with a finalized 53-man roster announced in early September.

Broncos injuries: Lloyd Cushenberry placed on Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Broncos placed C Lloyd Cushenberry and OT Drew Himmelman on COVID reserve today. Denver also re-signed RB Damarea Crockett to the practice squad.

Denver Broncos center Lloyd Cushenberry has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Thursday.

Cushenberry could be cleared in time for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders if he has a negative test before then. If Cushenberry is not back in time for the game, Austin Schlottmann and Quinn Meinerz would be the candidates to start in his place, coach Vic Fangio said.

Denver’s complete injury report from Thursday and the team’s other COVID and injury-related moves can be seen below.

5 lesser-known offensive tackle prospects Seahawks could target in 2021

The Seattle Seahawks are unlikely to snag one of the top few tackle prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft, but these five could be steals.

Offensive tackle will be a clear position of need for the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, with both Cedric Ogbuehi and Chad Wheeler set to hit free agency after the 2020 season. In Draftwire’s most recent way-too-early mock draft, the Seahawks make their first selection at No. 24, which likely puts them out of the range of top tackle prospects Penei Sewell (Oregon) and Walker Little (Stanford).

Although Texas’ Samuel Cosmi and Alabama’s Alex Leatherwood may well be available by the time that Seattle is on the clock, the Seahawks have other needs that they could potentially address in Round One.

Fortunately, the 2021 draft class contains a number of tackles that are flying under the radar and could end up as dark-horse pickups on day two or day 3 of the draft. Here are five lesser-known players that could be steals for the Seahawks
