Former Notre Dame Baseball star Trey Mancini to sign with Chicago Cubs

The former Irish star will be much closer to South Bend

It looks like former [autotag]Notre Dame Baseball[/autotag] star [autotag]Trey Mancini[/autotag] is coming back to the Midwest. After starring in South Bend, he was selected in the 8th round of the [autotag]2013 MLB Draft[/autotag] by the [autotag]Baltimore Orioles[/autotag].

Mancini would make him MLB debut just three years later, hitting a home run in his second at-bat. The homers would continue as he would become just the third player in MLB history to homer in his first three professional starts.

In March of 2020, Mancini would leave spring training due to a non-baseball medical procedure. Just a month later he would announce that he has stage 3 colon cancer and would miss the entire season.

In November of the same year, he would be given the diagnosis of being cancer free. Mancini would then make his return to the Orioles in 2021 and was named the [autotag]American League Comeback Player of the Year[/autotag]. He would then be traded to the [autotag]Houston Astros[/autotag] where he would win a [autotag]World Series[/autotag] title this past fall.

Mancini would then become a free agent and until today had gone unsigned. The [autotag]Chicago Cubs[/autotag], according to [autotag]ESPN’s Jesse Rogers[/autotag], have agreed to a two-year deal with an opt out clause and a return to the Midwest.

Former Notre Dame star named Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year

Hardly a surprise if you watched him with Notre Dame…

If you have followed Notre Dame baseball over the past few years it will come as no surprise to you that [autotag]Niko Kavadas[/autotag] had a successful first run in the minor leagues after being selected in the 11th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2021.

Just how good of a year was it for the former Fighting Irish slugger?

Kavadas hit .280 with a .990 OPS in 120 games split between Single-A, High-A, and Double-A for the Red Sox this season.  He led the entire Red Sox minor league system in slugging percentage (.547), OPS, and RBI (tied) while ranking second-best in home runs and on-base percentage (.443)>

Put all of that together and it’s easy to understand why Kavadas was named the Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year on Monday.

Kavadas hit .280 with a .416 on-base percentage while slugging 46 home runs at Notre Dame from 2018-2021.  Check out some of the photos from his memorable career at Notre Dame below.

Notre Dame Baseball commits goes higher than anticipated in MLB Draft

Congrats young man!

Many of the MLB Draft experts saw this draft as a weak one for pitching, which was enough for them to drop many of the pitching prospects down their boards. When the draft commenced on Sunday night, most of the industry’s best, looked a bit foolish as multiple pitchers were drafted higher than they were mocked.

The same went for Notre Dame Baseball signee Owen Murphy, who was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 20th overall selection in the first round. The consensus was that Murphy would get drafted early, but not this early, often falling to a team starting around the compensation picks.

The defending World Series Champions went heavy on the pitching side, with each of their first four selections highlighted by Murphy. As for his career with the Irish, at this moment it is unknown what he will do but if I had to guess, we unfortunately won’t ever see Murphy in the Blue and Gold.

Notre Dame’s comeback falls short, fall to Oklahoma in College World Series

The Irish are still alive….

The Irish were in a tight contest against Oklahoma, but the Sooners broke open the game during a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Although the Irish responded, with a [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] two-run homer, it wasn’t enough.

The Irish would give up one more run to Oklahoma and wound up losing the contest 6-2, their first loss in Omaha. Fortunately, [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] and his squad will play another day, as they will have to defeat Texas A&M in the loser’s bracket for another shot at defeating the Sooners. The win puts Oklahoma in a very advantageous position, needing just one more win to advance to the championship series.

The Irish and the Aggies will have a day-off before they take the field in an elimination game on Tuesday, at 2pm EST on ESPN.

Texas vs. Notre Dame preview for the 2022 College World Series

What to expect in Texas’ College World Series opener vs. Notre Dame.

The No. 9 Texas Longhorns will square off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the College World Series on Friday night. Both teams took down a higher-ranked team on the road in the super regionals to punch their tickets to Omaha.

Texas’ season looked all but dead in the seventh inning of game two vs. East Carolina. The Longhorns trailed 7-2 before mounting a historic comeback victory prior to dismantling the Pirates in game three.

Notre Dame was snubbed of a top 16 national seeded and proved the tournament committee wrong in a big way. The Irish swept through the regional round before pulling the upset of the year over No. 1 Tennessee in Knoxville.

Both teams enter with tons of experience and postseason familiarity. Texas appeared in the College World Series last season while Notre Dame was one game away.

Here is a look at the probable pitching matchups along with a few players to watch on both sides.

Interesting stat makes Notre Dame one of two schools to accomplish feat

Elite company

It’s not just about athletics with Notre Dame, obviously a top level education is part of student-athlete experience. For many of the academic-first schools, the work in the classroom trumps on the field.

It’s different for the Irish, as they have shown to be able to compete at a high-level along with getting a renown degree. As for the athletics, RedditCFB’s Twitter handle pointed out an interesting stat: just two school made a New Year’s Six Bowl game and will compete in the College World Series. The Irish, along with Ole Miss, are the two schools that hold the impressive distinction.

The football team has a ton of momentum, with [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] heading into his first full season as the head coach. As for the baseball team, [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] has taken them back to the CWS for the first time in 20-years. It’s an accomplishment that is noteworthy, not just because the Irish knocked off the top-seed in the tournament, Tennessee.

The fact that the Irish are able to succeed on the football field and the baseball diamond at a high-level is a great sign that the athletic department headed by [autotag]Jack Swarbrick[/autotag] have been making the right moves.

Watch: Notre Dame goes back-to-back to take lead over Tennessee

The Irish come storming back to take the lead!!!!

The Irish were looking like their season was coming to an end in Knoxville, Tennessee. With Volunteer freshman pitcher Chase Burns controlling the game, it didn’t seem like a 3-1 deficit entering the top of the seventh inning was something the Irish could comeback from.

Well, as this Irish team has shown all season, they just don’t give up. With [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag] starting off the rally, doubling to deep left-center with one out. Cather [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] then came up with two outs and Putz still on second and sent a line-drive down the right field line. The ball had just enough carry to go over the wall, tying the game at 3.

With the Irish right back in the game with one swing, it was [autotag]Jack Brannigan[/autotag] next up. Behind the count at 1-2, Brannigan launched a shot to left-center, clearing the wall by plenty to give Notre Dame their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Now, just nine outs away from heading to Omaha. The Irish look to finish off the number one seed in the NCAA Tournament, Tennessee.

Notre Dame baseball keeps rolling, sweeps visiting Clemson

The streak is now 8-games!!!

The Irish are streaking again. It’s been a common theme among this Notre Dame 2022 baseball team. With Sunday’s win again Clemson, the Irish have now won their eighth game in a row, their second consecutive ACC series sweep.

It was the bats that carried the Irish on Sunday, scoring nine runs with the big blasts coming from Jared Miller and Ryan Cole. They each hit homers while Carter Putz drove in three and Spencer Myers played two himself.

The trio of pitchers, Will Mercer, Roman Kimball and Alex Rao held the Tiger’s bats down for the majority of the game. Clemson’s Max Wagner tormented Kimball, hitting two home runs on the day but that wasn’t nearly enough as the Irish won 9-3.

The win brings the Irish record to 20-5, and improved their conference record to 8-4. This current streak has brought the Irish back to second place in the Atlantic division, one game behind leader Louisville. Link Jarrett’s team looks to keep the winning streak alive as they welcome in Michigan for their midweek contest on Tuesday at 5:30pm EST.
