SEC dominates the top five of the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The nation’s best conference boasts an impressive eight representatives in this week’s poll.

The SEC continues to prove why it is college baseball’s toughest conference.

Week 10’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll was released on Monday, and eight SEC programs occupy this week’s rankings. The heaviest representation can be seen in the top five, where four SEC teams reside.

Texas A&M remains the nation’s top team after taking two of three games from No. 18 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. No. 2 Arkansas also had an impressive weekend by winning their series at No. 21 South Carolina.

The weekend’s most impressive series win belongs to Tennessee, as the No. 3 Volunteers slowed down the No. 5 Kentucky Wildcats by winning two of three games in Lexington. Before last weekend’s series with Tennessee, Kentucky boasted a 14-1 SEC record through the first half of conference play.

Vanderbilt jumped four spots to No. 9 in this week’s rankings after taking two of three games over Florida while Georgia enjoyed a six-spot push after winning its home series over Ole Miss. South Carolina remains at No. 21 despite losing its series to Arkansas while Alabama falls to No. 18 after dropping a home series to Texas A&M.

Mississippi State is on the outside of this week’s poll. The Bulldogs received 45 votes in this week’s poll after it swept Auburn.

Recap: Auburn baseball drops doubleheader, gets swept in Starkville

Auburn’s baseball struggles continued in Starkville on Sunday, when the Tigers lost both ends of a doubleheader with Mississippi State.

Auburn baseball is entering crunch time as the end of the regular season draws near, trying to find answers to its struggles and make a run towards qualifying for the SEC Tournament in Hoover.

Unfortunately, those deficits were not able to be overcome, as the Tigers dropped both halves of a doubleheader with Mississippi State on Sunday, losing 3-1 and 4-3.

The first of the two contests was a pitcher’s duel until about the 4th inning. That is when the scoreless tie was broken and things got going.

Connor Hujsak led the inning off with a single into left field and advanced to second later in the inning with a Logan Kohler walk.

That set up Ethan Pulliam to single through the left side of the field, scoring Hujsak and putting the Bulldogs on the board.

After a strikeout recorded the second out, Armani Larry stepped up to the plate and also singled through the left side of the field, plating Kohler after an eventual error was made. Mississippi State had the 2-0 advantage.

Auburn attempted to answer back in the top of the 5th, as [autotag]Kaleb Freeman[/autotag] started the inning off with a solo home run over the right field wall, cutting the score to 2-1.

The final bit of scoring came in the bottom of the 6th with some two-out magic from the Bulldogs. After a David Mershon walk and a Dakota Jordan single, Hunter Hines singled through the right side to bring home the third Mississippi State run and eventually secure the win, 3-1.

The second of the two matches was filled with late drama, but early scoring.

With one runner on and two outs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Kohler singled through the left side to score the first run of the game for the Bulldogs, putting them up 1-0.

Things started looking up for the Tigers in the top of the 4th. [autotag]Christian Hall[/autotag] began the frame with a single through the left side. [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag] and [autotag]Cade Belyeu[/autotag] followed that up with back-to-back walks, loading the bases with no outs.

[autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] drew a walk right after this to score Auburn’s first run, which then set up [autotag]Carter Wright[/autotag] to hit into a fielder’s choice and put the Tigers in the lead at 2-1.

After a Freeman walk eventually loaded the bases up again later in the inning, [autotag]Eric Guevara[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice to second base, scoring Belyeu and making the score 3-1.

Nobody scored again until the 7th, which is when the Tigers’ pitching woes started to show up once again.

After two singles began Mississippi State’s final chance to tie the game back up, Kohler came in clutch once again, doubling to right center and clearing the bases. The Bulldogs had suddenly come back and tied the game up 3-3.

That sent the game into extra innings, and Auburn could not capitalize in the top of the 8th.

With runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Hujsak singled into left field, scoring in the game-winning run and securing the sweep for Mississippi State.

[autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag] picked up the loss in game one, dropping to 2-2 on the year. He pitched for 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking one.

[autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag] got the loss in the second game after his appearance in the 8th. He pitched 0.2 innings, giving up the one run on two hits while intentionally walking one.

Jurrangelo Cijntje picked up the first win for the Bulldogs with his 6.2 innings of work. He gave up one run on three hits, while striking out five and walking three.

Tyson Hardin got the win in game two, pitching two full innings. His phenomenal outing saw him give up no runs and no hits, while striking out five Tiger hitters.

Auburn now falls to 19-20 on the season and 2-16 in the SEC. Time is officially running out for [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag]’s team as they prepare to do battle with Florida A&M on Tuesday. First pitch for that game is set for 3 p.m. CST at Plainsman Park.

Casey Mize earns first win since 2021 season on Sunday

The former Auburn ace tossed six scoreless innings in Detroit’s 6-1 victory over Minnesota on Sunday.

Since making his Major League debut in September 2020, former Auburn pitcher and No. 1 overall pick of the 2018 MLB draft [autotag]Casey Mize[/autotag] has experienced his share of injury setbacks.

However, it seems as if Mize is starting to get back into the groove of pitching against the top talent in the world. On Sunday, Mize tossed six shutout innings while allowing five hits and striking out four batters in Detroit’s 6-1 win over Minnesota. Mize earned the win, his first since 2021.

Mize missed nearly two full years of action due to Tommy John and back surgeries and is off to a great start in 2024. In four starts, Mize has struck out 16 batters while walking just six and allowing seven earned runs in 21.1 innings while maintaining a 2.95 ERA. His six-inning performance on Sunday matched his season-high.

“Pitcher wins are here or there, but it feels good. It’s been a long time, but the bigger thing is the series win and the team win. I think we’re all happy about that. Good day for us,” Mize said postgame. “I always want the guys to think that we can win when I pitch. I think that’s the goal of every starter. I’m glad I’ve been able to keep us in it, but the team scoring early really allowed me to have confidence in them and try to shove the ball in the strike zone. I always want us to win my starts.”

Mize’s four starts this season is the most since 2021 when he logged 30 starts for the Detroit Tigers in his official rookie season. That season, he finished with a 7-9 record, recording 118 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.71. Mize is in line to pitch again Saturday against the Kansas City Royals.

Auburn baseball falls in series opener to Mississippi State

The host Bulldogs rattled off eight unanswered runs in Friday’s opener to knock off the Auburn Tigers.

Auburn baseball opened the second half of the SEC slate on a sour note by dropping game one of its series to Mississippi State.

Auburn took an early 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning. However, the Bulldogs rattled off eight unanswered runs to claim game one of the series, 8-1 on Friday night at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville.

Auburn’s pitching woes continued Friday as five pitchers combined to allow eight runs on 10 hits with eight walks and four strikeouts. Head coach Butch Thompson was not pleased with his pitching staff’s performance, and wants to see more out of the Tigers’ offense to make up for pitching issues.

“We have to bring some offense on the road, especially with where we’re at pitching wise,” Thompson said postgame. “We saw a real No. 1 tonight in (Khal) Stephen but still had a chance. We had the bases loaded twice, and when he was able to get us out of the bases-loaded jams, that was huge. He made a couple of big pitches in the moment that held up for him tonight.”

Auburn took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning on a passed ball that allowed Cale Stricklin to score, but the lead was short-lived as Mississippi State tied the game in the bottom frame on a sacrifice fly.

Bryce Chance gave Mississippi State the lead in the 4th inning on a solo home run while an error and fielders choice allowed the Bulldogs to add two more runs in the 5th and 6th innings. The daggers were delivered in the 7th inning as a pair of doubles by Connor Hujsak and Logan Kohler secured the win for Mississippi State.

Stricklin led Auburn in hits with three. Starting pitcher Dylan Watts took the loss by allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out one in four innings of work.

Game two of the series between Auburn and Mississippi State is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on Saturday. Tanner Bauman will square off with Jurrangelo Cijntje in front of a national audience on SEC Network.

Auburn announces weekend rotation for series against Mississippi State

This weekend, sophomore Dylan Watts, senior Tanner Bauman, and junior Carson Myers will get the call against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Auburn baseball’s 2024 season has been nothing short of tumultuous, with the Tigers struggling to pick up any kind of momentum since the pre-SEC schedule ended in mid-February. That rockiness has caused head coach Butch Thompson to consistently tinker with his weekend rotation, as we’ve Auburn throw out different combinations in almost every SEC series thus far.

This weekend, sophomore [autotag]Dylan Watts[/autotag], senior [autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag], and junior [autotag]Carson Myers [/autotag] will get the call against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Watts earns the Friday nod after pitching exclusively in relief since his season debut in late February against UAB. The Washington State native has yet to throw more than 2 2/3 innings in a game this year but does own an impressive 19:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 16.2 innings pitched this season. His 5.94 era is high, but the sophomore could have a decent chance to slice it down with a longer outing.

Senior southpaw Tanner Bauman will toe the rubber on Saturday for the Tigers in an interesting move from Thompson. Bauman had a very solid outing against No. 5 Kentucky last Saturday, navigating his way through 4 innings of 1-run ball. Bauman’s second-straight inclusion in the weekend rotation isn’t surprising, but Thompson’s decision to pitch fellow left-hander Carson Myers directly behind him is.

The junior Myers has spent plenty of time in high leverage situations for the Tigers this season. After a mid-season scuttle, Myers has settled in as Auburn’s most reliable pitcher, most notably giving up just 4 runs over his last 12 SEC innings pitched.

Auburn’s ‘snake-bitten’ season continues following Kentucky series

Auburn enters the second half of the SEC slate with a 2-13 record in conference play. Will they be able to turn it around before heading to Hoover next month?

Starting the SEC campaign with a 2-13 record is not what Auburn baseball and head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] had in mind. The Tigers were swept for the third time in conference play last week to No. 5 Kentucky, a series where the Wildcats outscored the Tigers by seven runs.

Although Kentucky completed the sweep, it was a series that could have gone the other way. Auburn had two runners on base with zero outs in game one on Thursday, but a strikeout and a double play ended the Tigers’ comeback efforts in a 6-5 loss. In Saturday’s finale, Auburn held a 7-0 lead before the Wildcats stormed back to win 13-8.

The sweep added to Auburn’s long losing streak, which currently stands at six games. Their recent string of bad luck appeared in this week’s SEC Baseball Vibes rankings by Joe Healy of D1Baseball. The “snake-bitten” Tigers check in at No. 14 this week.

There’s always at least one team in the SEC that goes through the season as a snakebitten team where very little seems to go right, and it’s looking increasingly like Auburn is that team in 2024. Its lineup has been good enough more often than not, but it has the highest ERA in the conference in league play and those struggles on the mound were on display Sunday when the Tigers led 7-0 over Kentucky in the third inning and went on to lose the game. Auburn will continue to be a tough out the rest of the way, but it might have just taken on too much water at this point.

The Tigers will look to change its luck as the stretch turns to the final 15 games. Auburn will face the likes of struggling teams such as Missouri and LSU over the final five weekends and will look to increase their seeding before next month’s SEC Tournament in Hoover.

The first series of the second half will be against Mississippi State this weekend at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville. The Bulldogs check in at No. 8 in this week’s vibes rankings after losing a tough series to rival Ole Miss.

Auburn baseball fails to receive votes in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll following Kentucky series

The Tigers look to turn things around during the second half of SEC play.

Auburn baseball’s struggles continued last weekend as the Tigers suffered a sweep at the hands of the red-hot Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats, who boast an impressive 14-1 SEC record, won a tight game over Auburn in game one of the series before winning the final two games by a comfortable margin.

The series win moves Kentucky to the No. 5 spot in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, a three-spot increase from last week’s rankings. As for Auburn, they are out of poll consideration for the third week in a row.

The SEC is represented by eight programs, with four of the top five teams belonging to the conference. Texas A&M is the nation’s new No. 1 team after sweeping then-No. 6 Vanderbilt in College Station. The sweep drops Vanderbilt to No. 13 in this week’s poll. The Aggies jumped Arkansas for the No. 1 spot after the Razorbacks suffered a series loss to No. 14 Alabama over the weekend.

Tennessee moves one spot to No. 3 after sweeping LSU in Knoxville, and Alabama moves to No. 14 following its series win over No. 2 Arkansas. South Carolina and Georgia enter this week’s polls after successful weekends over Florida and Missouri respectively.

Auburn baseball looks to get back on track this weekend by facing Mississippi State on the road beginning Friday. The Bulldogs received 23 votes in this week’s poll.

Recap: Auburn drops mid-week contest against Alabama State

The loss, while disappointing, is the microcosm of what has been a disastrous March and April for Auburn.

While Auburn baseball has struggled for the majority of the SEC season, head coach Butch Thompson has been able to take solace in the fact his Tigers have been great outside of the conference. That feeling of solace disappeared faster than the sun during Monday’s solar eclipse on Tuesday.

The Tigers dropped a non-conference game for the first time since March 9 in Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to 14-16 Alabama State. The loss, while disappointing, is the microcosm of what has been a disastrous March and April for Auburn.

After starters Christian Herberholz (1-1)and Luis Rodriguez (3-3) traded zeroes for the first three innings, the Tigers finally broke through on a 2-out, passed ball that scored Gavin Miller.

Herberholz responded with a shutdown fifth to finish his night before things once again went dormant until the seventh when the Hornets finally broke through against Auburn reliever Zach Crotchfelt with a game-tying, solo homer by outfielder Ali LaPread.

Crotchfelt gave up another solo shot, and the lead, the very next inning when 2024 First Team All-SWAC infielder Randy Flores took him deep. Alabama State would score a third run on an error in the ninth which proved to be enough to hold off a slight Auburn rally in the games’ final frame.

This is certainly a tough loss for an already reeling Auburn team, but the Tigers will need to flush it down the toilet as they prepare for a weekend SEC series against Kentucky this weekend.

Auburn to officially make the switch from Under Armour to Nike

Auburn’s long-time deal with Under Armour will expire in 2025, paving the way for Nike to become the program’s official uniform provider.

After spending 18 seasons as Auburn’s official uniform and apparel provider, Under Armour will make one last run on the Plains in 2024.

Auburn Athletics announced Tuesday that its deal with Under Armour will end next summer, paving the way for Nike to become the program’s next provider of uniforms, shoes, and apparel. Auburn athletic director [autotag]John Cohen[/autotag] is excited for the next chapter in Tigers’ athletics.

“We are excited to enter this new partnership with Nike, a brand that consistently champions athletes and sport around the world. We are appreciative of their strong support throughout this process. We believe that our 10-year agreement, beginning in July 2025, will continue to elevate Auburn and best serve our student-athletes and our university moving forward. We are also grateful to Kevin Plank and Under Armour for their 18 years of valued partnership in growing the Auburn brand and serving our student athletes, coaches, and fans. We look forward to the opportunity to celebrate this relationship throughout the final year ahead.”

Under Armour became Auburn’s official uniform outfitter in 2006, replacing Auburn’s deal with longtime provider, Russell Athletic. The original contract was for five years and was worth $10.6 million. In 2015, Auburn restructured its contract for 10 years and $78.1 million, plus $10 million in Under Armour stock.

Justin Hokanson of Auburn Live reports that Apple CEO and Auburn alum [autotag]Tim Cook[/autotag] played a major role in negotiations. [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] were also open to moving on from Under Armour in favor of Nike.

Auburn’s current contract with Under Armour will expire in the Summer of 2025, and Nike will become Auburn’s official uniform provider immediately following the final event of the 2024-25 athletic season.

Auburn remains unranked in week 8 USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The Auburn Tigers remain unranked in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll following a 2-2 week on the diamond.

The Auburn Tigers remain unranked in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll following a 2-2 week on the diamond. After starting the week 2-0 with a couple of impressive wins, head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag]’s squad fell apart, losing both weekend contests in 7-inning mercy rule fashion.

The two blowout losses came at the hands of No. 4 ranked Tennessee. After losing a back-and-forth series opener 9-5 on Friday, the Vols rallied to completely dismantle Auburn over the final two games in Plainsman Park.

The series loss was the Tigers fifth straight to open the SEC season. The streak could very well extend to a sixth straight series with surprise SEC contender No. 8 Kentucky heading to the Plains next weekend.

Auburn is now 18-13 on the season but just 2-10 in SEC play. The Tigers are also winless on the road, where they have dropped all six of their contests.

We’ll see if the Tigers can build some momentum off of Friday’s SEC win as they dip into the second half of the season.
