Can the Irish return to Omaha next season?

The bar has been set for Irish baseball and it’s high. In the two full seasons that [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] has been at the helm, Notre Dame has made it to the Super Regionals last year and this year the College World Series. Although neither trip resulted in hardware being brought back to South Bend, the play has set a standard for the Irish. Here are three factors for the Notre Dame Baseball team to make a return to Omaha next season.

Notre Dame’s comeback falls short, fall to Oklahoma in College World Series

The Irish are still alive….

The Irish were in a tight contest against Oklahoma, but the Sooners broke open the game during a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Although the Irish responded, with a [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] two-run homer, it wasn’t enough.

The Irish would give up one more run to Oklahoma and wound up losing the contest 6-2, their first loss in Omaha. Fortunately, [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] and his squad will play another day, as they will have to defeat Texas A&M in the loser’s bracket for another shot at defeating the Sooners. The win puts Oklahoma in a very advantageous position, needing just one more win to advance to the championship series.

The Irish and the Aggies will have a day-off before they take the field in an elimination game on Tuesday, at 2pm EST on ESPN.

Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma

Do you take the Irish’s leaders or the Sooners’?

Notre Dame gets to play Oklahoma in its next College World Series game, and it might have an advantage as far as balance. Sure, you have [autotag]Carter Putz [/autotag]pacing the Irish in both runs scored and RBIs, and [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] is terrific at keeping runs off the board and closing games. However, you have a variety of names after that. [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] hits well for average, [autotag]Jack Zyska[/autotag] provides the power, and [autotag]Ryan Cole[/autotag] is a menace on the basepaths.

For the Sooners, it’s mainly one guy apiece on the hitting and pitching sides. One of them is shortstop Peyton Graham, who is projected to be taken early in the upcoming MLB draft. Also getting ready for the draft is left-handed pitcher Jake Bennett, who won’t be available after starting and winning the Sooners’ last game against Texas A&M. Although not listed in the above chart, make sure you’re on the lookout for catcher Jimmy Crooks, too.

Notre Dame knox off number one seeded Tennessee, advance to College World Series

The Irish are off to Omaha for the first time in 20-years!!!

For the majority of game three of the Knoxville Super Regional, it looked like the Irish would be ending their season once again on the brink of making the College World Series. [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] then saw his team respond, like they have done all season.

First it was [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag], whose opposite field 2-run home run with two outs tied the game at three for the Irish. Then it was [autotag]Jack Brannigan[/autotag] time, who launched a solo-homer to give Notre Dame their first lead of the game, 4-3 in the top of the seventh.

Reliever [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] then had what no other Irish pitcher had all game, a lead. He would then retire the Volunteers in order, send the game to the eighth.

More two-out magic for the Irish would continue in the top of the eighth. With runners on second and third, [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag] sent a shot to right-center, falling for a double, plating two more runs, giving the Irish a 6-3 lead. The bats weren’t done, as [autotag]Jack Zyska[/autotag] singled to left scoring Putz and adding another run to the Notre Dame lead, 7-3.

Jarrett would ride the hot left-handed arm of Findlay through the end of the game, as he continued to put up zero’s against the Volunteer offense. Five innings of work for Findlay, allowing just one hit and two walks. Alex Rao deserves a lot of credit as well, as he came in relief of starter Liam Simon and limited damage as well.

The win propels the Irish to their first trip to Omaha since 2002, exactly twenty-years since their last visit and third time overall. The season that looked like it was over, will continue with the Irish having a chance to play for a National Championship.

Watch: Notre Dame goes back-to-back to take lead over Tennessee

The Irish come storming back to take the lead!!!!

The Irish were looking like their season was coming to an end in Knoxville, Tennessee. With Volunteer freshman pitcher Chase Burns controlling the game, it didn’t seem like a 3-1 deficit entering the top of the seventh inning was something the Irish could comeback from.

Well, as this Irish team has shown all season, they just don’t give up. With [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag] starting off the rally, doubling to deep left-center with one out. Cather [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] then came up with two outs and Putz still on second and sent a line-drive down the right field line. The ball had just enough carry to go over the wall, tying the game at 3.

With the Irish right back in the game with one swing, it was [autotag]Jack Brannigan[/autotag] next up. Behind the count at 1-2, Brannigan launched a shot to left-center, clearing the wall by plenty to give Notre Dame their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Now, just nine outs away from heading to Omaha. The Irish look to finish off the number one seed in the NCAA Tournament, Tennessee.

Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Georgia Southern

Which team wins the leaders battle?

Notre Dame and Georgia Southern both will need to rely on their best players with very little time to rest. The Irish have relied on [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag] and [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] in particular to provide their offense this season. Of course, let’s not forget about [autotag]Brooks Coetzee[/autotag]’s power. On the pitching side, [autotag]John Michael Bertrand[/autotag] probably won’t be available for this next game, but that’s why you have options like [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] on your hands.

Meanwhile, the Eagles definitely won’t have ace Ty Fisher available after he threw a complete-game shutout against UNC Greensboro earlier in the day. Perhaps that means Ga’Von Wray will have to pick up the slack? On the flip side, the offense relies heavily on Jesse Sherrill and Noah Ledford, and they surely will receive inspiration from the home crowd. That’s not to take away from the rest of the lineup, but the Irish will be in business if they can hold those two in check.

The rain can’t stop Notre Dame, wins game 1 in Statesboro Regional

The Irish get the opening game win!!!

The Irish figured to get an ace like performance from starter [autotag]John Michael Bertrand[/autotag], but the rain would have none of that. Notre Dame’s star pitcher went just one inning before a lengthy rain delay and [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] decided to have his bullpen take it the rest of the way.

Jarrett’s move was genius, as relievers [autotag]Liam Simon[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Rao[/autotag] shut down the Texas Tech bats. They combined for 15 strike-outs and the Irish had just enough offense for a “comfortable” lead throughout the contest. It was a [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] two-RBI double in the bottom of the first, prior to the rain delay, that gave the Irish the cushion.

Unfortunately for the Irish, the Red Raiders scored two-runs in the top of the eighth to even the score at two. As we have seen all season, this group just doesn’t quit. Once again LaManna was in the middle of the action, reaching on a catcher’s interference. [autotag]Jack Penney[/autotag] bunted him over to second before [autotag]Jared Miller[/autotag] ran for LaManna, who promptly stole third. His pressure got to TT, as a wild pitch would allow Miller to score to give the Irish the lead back, 3-2.

Reliever [autotag]Jackson Dennies[/autotag] then entered to top of the ninth to close out the game for the Irish. It wouldn’t be easy as he retired one batter before allowing a single, which led Jarrett to bring in [autotag]Aidan Tyrell[/autotag] to close it out and that’s exactly what he did.

Due to the rain delay, the other scheduled game, Georgia Southern against UNC-Greensboro was not played so the remaining schedule is a bit up in the air. What we do know is that the Irish are now in the winners bracket as they get set to play their second game of the Regional.

Four Reasons why Notre Dame Baseball advances to the Super Regionals

The post-season starts today for the Irish

The Irish are back on the diamond today, as the second seed in the Stateboro Regional of the NCAA Baseball Tournament. After last years amazing run to the Super Regionals, the expectations rose in [autotag]Link Jarrett’s[/autotag] first full season as the Notre Dame head coach. Another trip to the ‘Sweet 16’ won’t come easy, but here are four reasons why they will.

On the day of the Blue vs. Gold game, Notre Dame baseball wins by football score

This was certainly a football score

Notre Dame 21, Wake Forest 3. Sounds like a football score right? Well, that wasn’t the case as the Irish baseball scored three touchdowns worth of runs against the visiting Demon Deacons while allowing just a field goal.

The offensive outburst was the highest run total of the year for Link Jarrett’s team as they were led by catcher David LaManna, who had two hits, one for a home run, and drove in five. Jack Brannigan, Brady Gumpf and Zack Prajzner also hit long balls for the Irish, who scored in every inning except for the fifth with multiple runs in the first, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh.

Starter Austin Temple wasn’t as sharp as we have seen him, but he didn’t need to be. He allowed two runs spanning 4.1 innings and then the bullpen took over. Another unearned run charged to Jack Findlay would be the only other damage the Irish pitchers would allow.

It was a great win for the Irish, who pushed their winning streak to four games and their record to 25-8. They improved to 10-7 in ACC as well. The win gives Notre Dame a series win but they will go for the sweep tomorrow as the start time has changed and first pitch at Frank Eck Stadium will be at 11am EST.

The streak reaches three, Notre Dame Baseball takes game 1 against Wake Forest

The Irish are streaking again, one hits three games

The streaks for this years Irish baseball team have been odd to say the least. Aside from the first series of the year, Link Jarrett’s team has either won multiple games in-a-row or lost them in the same fashion.

After a terrible road series at Duke, where the Irish lost each game, they turned around and won their two mid-week home games before Wake Forest came to South Bend. The Irish’s streaky ways continued, as they defeated the Demon Deacons 8-3 on Friday night, extending their winning streak to 3-games, while improving their overall record to 24-8. They moved to two-games over .500 in ACC play as well, with a 9-7 record in conference.

Ace John Michael Bertrand was great again, as he allowed just five hits and one walk, two runs with one earned. He stuck out four before giving way to Alex Rao, allowed a run in 2.1 innings, and Jackson Dennies who finished off Wake.

Offensively Jack Zyska led the way with three hits, an RBI and two runs. David LaManna also scored twice while Jack Brannigan drove in two.

The series continues this afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium at 2pm EST, and if you on campus for the Blue vs. Gold game, head on over after and check out the Irish baseball team.
