Notre Dame alumnus Ryan Cole makes professional debut with Glacier

Good luck to Ryan.

With his Notre Dame days behind him, [autotag]Ryan Cole[/autotag] was ready to take the next step in his baseball career. Less than two months removed from playing in the College World Series, Cole has found a new team. That team is the Glacier Range Riders of the Pioneer Baseball League.

Cole’s played in his first professional game Tuesday against the Billings Mustangs, starting in left field. It wasn’t the best pro debut in baseball history as he went 0 for 3 with one strikeout. We’ll chalk that up to first-game jitters and just getting used to the next level. After all, this league has been playing its season since late May.

In his final season with the Irish, Cole made Third Team All-ACC and his second straight All-ACC Academic Team. He ended his collegiate career with a slash line of .284/.409/.461 as well as 18 home runs and 76 RBIs. Here’s hoping he can achieve those numbers at the next level soon.

Three factors for Notre Dame Baseball to return to College World Series

Can the Irish return to Omaha next season?

The bar has been set for Irish baseball and it’s high. In the two full seasons that [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] has been at the helm, Notre Dame has made it to the Super Regionals last year and this year the College World Series. Although neither trip resulted in hardware being brought back to South Bend, the play has set a standard for the Irish. Here are three factors for the Notre Dame Baseball team to make a return to Omaha next season.

Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Texas A&M

The Irish will have to hope that their best players shine in an elimination game.

Notre Dame and Texas A&M will be fighting for their College World Series lives when they play each other. If the Irish turn to [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] at any point, that’s a good sign because they likely are in the lead and want to shut the door with arguably their best pitcher on their whole staff. [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag] likely will be around runs one way or another if the offense gets it going because that’s what he does. Also, we’ve already seen [autotag]Ryan Cole[/autotag] swipe a bag in Omaha.

Literally almost all of the Aggies’ best offensive numbers come from outfielder Dylan Rock. Even if he’s not driving in runs, his speed keeps pitchers and catchers on guard at all times. As far as pitching, the leaders are spread out pretty evenly, so you don’t really have one person you would prefer to face at the plate. That’s what any team that has gotten this far should want.

Watch: Notre Dame gets outs on two crazy plays against Oklahoma

They happened in the same inning!!!

The Irish are in a battle, as the Oklahoma offense had seemingly solved lefty hurler [autotag]Aiden Tyrell[/autotag]. Then some very weird plays happened, both in the bottom of the fourth and both revolving around third baseman [autotag]Jack Brannigan[/autotag].

First, it was a fly-ball towards left fielder [autotag]Ryan Cole[/autotag], who dove but came up a bit short and the ball went past Cole to the wall. He quickly got up, gather himself, found [autotag]Zack Prajzner[/autotag], his cutoff man, who then fired to Brannigan and go the runner at third.

That wasn’t the end of the odd defensive plays during the inning. This time it was right fielder [autotag]Brooks Coetzee[/autotag] gunning out the baserunner at third only to see Brannigan lose the ball on the tag, hit the Sooners third-base coach and the Irish third baseman quickly grabbed the ball and tagged out the runner.

It was two crazy sequences that happened which has kept the Irish deficit at just two runs as they continue to battle against Oklahoma in the winners bracket in the College World Series.

Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma

Do you take the Irish’s leaders or the Sooners’?

Notre Dame gets to play Oklahoma in its next College World Series game, and it might have an advantage as far as balance. Sure, you have [autotag]Carter Putz [/autotag]pacing the Irish in both runs scored and RBIs, and [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] is terrific at keeping runs off the board and closing games. However, you have a variety of names after that. [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] hits well for average, [autotag]Jack Zyska[/autotag] provides the power, and [autotag]Ryan Cole[/autotag] is a menace on the basepaths.

For the Sooners, it’s mainly one guy apiece on the hitting and pitching sides. One of them is shortstop Peyton Graham, who is projected to be taken early in the upcoming MLB draft. Also getting ready for the draft is left-handed pitcher Jake Bennett, who won’t be available after starting and winning the Sooners’ last game against Texas A&M. Although not listed in the above chart, make sure you’re on the lookout for catcher Jimmy Crooks, too.

Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Texas

Which players do you trust more?

Although Texas has an overall offensive advantage against Notre Dame, some individual leaders on the Irish can boast better numbers. Sure, [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] having the best starter ERA between the two schools is fine, but what do the offensive leaders tell us about how these teams match up? Well, it still isn’t the best news for the Irish, even if [autotag]Ryan Cole[/autotag] has stolen the most bases of anyone in this matchup. Still, they’ve shown so far in this tournament that timeliness matters as much as stats.

The Longhorns have five players on MLB.com’s top draft prospects list. None is ranked higher than first baseman and unquestioned offensive leader Ivan Melendez. After that is left-hander Pete Hansen, arguably their best pitcher. But again, the Irish didn’t make the College World Series without dispatching some of the best potential future major leaguers, which always will show up on the road to Omaha. What’s not to say they can’t do it again?

Notre Dame outfielder not fearful of Tennessee

Scared? Try again.

Notre Dame baseball enters the Super Regional this weekend against top-ranked Tennessee and as a considerable underdog to the Volunteers that have put up a ridiculous 56-7 record this season.

[lawrence-related id=57213]

Let me make it clear – Tennessee is loaded.  Seemingly every regular on their roster has hit double-digit home runs while eight regular starters have on-base percentages north of .400.  Couple that with their three regular starting pitchers all earning invitations to pitch for the Team USA collegiate team.

Maybe Notre Dame would be better off just staying in South Bend and avoiding this all together.

But here’s the thing.

Notre Dame is a damn fine baseball team, too, and they know it.

Outfielder Ryan Cole met the media Wednesday and was asked about how Tennessee likely views the Fighting Irish.

“I couldn’t tell you exactly what they see, but if I were them I’d be a little scared,” Cole said. “I think we’re a very dangerous team.”

You can call it bulletin board material, poking the bear, shaking the beehive, or whatever else you want but I’ll put it out there that I like it.

What do people want Cole to say?

“We don’t have a chance and we’re really looking forward to the sight-seeing trip we’ll take to beautiful downtown Knoxville!”

Get out of town.

Cole is likely representative of the rest of his teammates and certainly his head coach, Link Jarrett.  Even if nobody else believes Notre Dame has a chance this weekend the guys wearing the uniform certainly do and that’s really the only people that need to.

It’ll take an incredible showing over the weekend but here’s to hoping the Irish can shock the college baseball world.

Four Reasons why Notre Dame Baseball advances to the Super Regionals

The post-season starts today for the Irish

The Irish are back on the diamond today, as the second seed in the Stateboro Regional of the NCAA Baseball Tournament. After last years amazing run to the Super Regionals, the expectations rose in [autotag]Link Jarrett’s[/autotag] first full season as the Notre Dame head coach. Another trip to the ‘Sweet 16’ won’t come easy, but here are four reasons why they will.

Notre Dame players Bertrand, Cole named to All-ACC teams

Congratulations to the honorees.

While Notre Dame waits for the ACC Tournament to begin, it can enjoy the all-conference honors being bestowed upon two of its players. For the second straight season, left-handed pitcher [autotag]John Michael Bertrand[/autotag] has been named to the All-ACC First Team. Additionally, outfielder [autotag]Ryan Cole[/autotag] has made the All-ACC Third Team. Both have played significant roles in the Irish’s 33-13 record.

Bertrand, the ace of the Irish’s rotation, has a 7-2 record with a 2.62 ERA and 86 strikeouts over 81 1/3 innings pitched. Nine of his 13 starts have seen him go at least six innings, and he has given up three or fewer earned runs in 10 of those starts. It shouldn’t be surprising that he’s the first Irish Notre Dame to make the All-ACC First Team in consecutive years since the Irish joined the conference.

Cole has started every game this season and for good reason. His program-leading 18 stolen bases are fourth in the conference, and he also ranks second on the team with nine home runs and 53 hits.

Notre Dame baseball keeps rolling, sweeps visiting Clemson

The streak is now 8-games!!!

The Irish are streaking again. It’s been a common theme among this Notre Dame 2022 baseball team. With Sunday’s win again Clemson, the Irish have now won their eighth game in a row, their second consecutive ACC series sweep.

It was the bats that carried the Irish on Sunday, scoring nine runs with the big blasts coming from Jared Miller and Ryan Cole. They each hit homers while Carter Putz drove in three and Spencer Myers played two himself.

The trio of pitchers, Will Mercer, Roman Kimball and Alex Rao held the Tiger’s bats down for the majority of the game. Clemson’s Max Wagner tormented Kimball, hitting two home runs on the day but that wasn’t nearly enough as the Irish won 9-3.

The win brings the Irish record to 20-5, and improved their conference record to 8-4. This current streak has brought the Irish back to second place in the Atlantic division, one game behind leader Louisville. Link Jarrett’s team looks to keep the winning streak alive as they welcome in Michigan for their midweek contest on Tuesday at 5:30pm EST.
