4 takeaways from the Eagles signing Nickell Robey-Coleman

Philadelphia Eagles are giving Jim Schwartz options at cornerback

The Philadelphia Eagles are doing their best to present defensive options for Jim Schwartz, adding another talented cornerback.

The Birds inked former Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman to a one-year deal on Wednesday and the reviews are in.

With the Eagles now have options at the position, here are four takeaways from the move.

1. Robey Coleman adds flexibility

The addition of Robey-Coleman gives the Birds another guy who can play in the slot but also transition outside if need be. If Jim Schwartz chooses to move Avonte Maddox to safety, Robey-Coleman gives him options.

3 things to know about new Eagles CB Nickell Robey-Coleman

The Philadelphia Eagles are definitely preaching competition in the secondary after adding another slot cornerback in former Rams defensive back, Nickell Robey-Coleman.

Robey-Coleman will compete in a crowded slot position that includes Avonte Maddox, Cre’Von LeBlanc and Tremon Smith.

With Robey-Coleman coming from the west coast, here are three things to know about the Eagles’ newest cornerback.

1. Robey-Coleman is a former Trojan star

Robey-Coleman was signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2013 after playing collegiately at Southern Cal.

A Florida native, Robey-Coleman was a four-star recruit that chose USC over West Virginia, Tennessee, and Clemson, among other schools.

Eagles sign Nickell Robey-Coleman to a 1-year deal

The man at the center of one of the NFL’s biggest postseason dramas is on his way to Philadelphia after the Eagles agreed to a deal with Nickell Robey-Coleman per Josina Anderson.

Most famous for his non-call of pass interference on a Saints player in the NFC title game from 2018, Robey-Coleman has been a consistent corner for the LA Rams.

Robey-Coleman joins Darius Slay as the newest additions to the Eagles cornerback group, as the Birds aim to discontinue to the quality play at the position.

During his three seasons with LA, Robey-Coleman had 122 tackles, three interceptions, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Nickell Robey-Coleman to sign 1-year deal with Eagles

Robey-Coleman has found a new home.

The Los Angeles Rams will get a chance to see Nickell Robey-Coleman again next season after declining his 2020 option when they travel to Philadelphia.

As first reported by ESPN, the Eagles are signing Robey-Coleman to a one-year deal, adding to a revamped secondary that now includes Darius Slay, too. Robey-Coleman was set to make $4.5 million with the Rams next season.

He’s viewed as one of the best nickel corners in the NFL, which made the Rams’ decision to part ways with him so surprising. He was a key contributor for the last three seasons after signing as a free agent, arguably performing as the Rams’ best cornerback in that span.

Last season, Robey-Coleman made 36 tackles and forced two fumbles. He recorded three interceptions in three years with the Rams.

Touchdown Wire’s top 15 remaining free agents

Free agency might be slowing down, but there are still solid options out there. Who are the 15 best remaining free agents?

NFL free agency seems to be slowing down, but that does not mean there are few options left on the open market. In fact, some of the more interesting options available this off-season remain, including one defender who was hoping to secure a “market setting” contract this spring. As free agency is poised to enter its second week, who are the best options still out there for teams?

(Note: Players who were given the franchise tag but have yet to sign, such as Chris Jones and Joe Thuney, are not included in this list).

3 bold moves the Saints can still make to shake up free agency

Whether they go after Everson Griffen, Jameis Winston, or Nickell Robey-Coleman, the Saints can still make another splash in free agency.

The New Orleans Saints have taken a patient approach in free agency, mainly working to retain their own players while being very selective in how they invest their dollars on the open market. That changed suddenly late Friday night when the club agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Pro Bowl wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, adding the complimentary receiving threat to Michael Thomas that they haven’t had in years.

So what are some other ways the Saints could aggressively upgrade their roster? With Drew Brees in the twilight of his career, there’s little time to waste in settling for less before his Super Bowl window closes. Here are some suggestions.

1. Sign cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman

Bringing in the player at fault in the 2018 NFC Championship Game (you know which play) may not sit well with Saints fans, but don’t blame him for inept officiating. Robey-Coleman expected to get fouled and was as shocked as anyone when he wasn’t. But let’s focus on the present.

Robey-Coleman is one of the best slot cornerbacks in the NFL, having broken up 20 passes in the last three years, and he’s only available because the Rams mismanaged their salary cap situation and couldn’t afford his $4.5 million contract option for 2020. If the Saints can make room for him, Robey-Coleman would be a rock-solid addition to the depth chart.

Having legitimate options at both safety (Malcolm Jenkins) and in the slot (Nickell Robey-Coleman) would allow Gardner-Johnson to play whichever position the coaching staff thinks best suits him. He’s handled a variety of duties before, and continuing to play him as a position-less “rover” might be the best path forward.

Nickell Robey-Coleman confused by Rams’ decision, calls it ‘bittersweet’

Nickell Robey-Coleman didn’t expect the Rams to move on, but he’s excited about his next opportunity.

The Los Angeles Rams made the puzzling decision to move on from Nickell Robey-Coleman, declining his 2020 option on Tuesday. He’s now an unrestricted free agent, while the Rams will save $4.5 million in cap space.

Considering the way he’s played the last three years, this is a shocking choice by the Rams. Yes, their cornerback depth is strong, but Robey-Coleman was a valuable defender on a very cheap contract.

He was just as confused by the move as many fans were, speaking to Josina Anderson of ESPN after the new came down. He called it “bittersweet,” saying there’s no bad blood between him and the team as they go their separate ways.

Robey-Coleman has allowed a completion rate below 66% in each of the last two years, giving up just four touchdowns in coverage during that span. He’s an aggressive tackler and sticky in man coverage despite being undersized for the position.

Whoever signs Robey-Coleman in free agency is going to get a quality player at a relatively low price – and he’s still only 28 years old. The Rams could come to regret this decision if David Long and their other young cornerbacks can’t step up.

Rams moving on from Nickell Robey-Coleman, decline 2020 option

The Rams are freeing up $4.5 million in cap space by declining his option.

Nickell Robey-Coleman has been one of the best slot corners in the NFL the last three seasons, but the Los Angeles Rams have decided to move on from him. The team announced on Tuesday that it will not pick up his option for the 2020 season, making him a free agent.

This is a surprising move for the Rams, considering the way Robey-Coleman has played since being signed by Los Angeles in 2017. By declining his option, the Rams save $4.5 million in cap space, but Robey-Coleman has been a valuable player in the secondary.

The Rams are clearly trying to free up as much cap space as possible this offseason after letting Michael Brockers and Cory Littleton leave in free agency, and Robey-Coleman’s option was an opportunity to save more money.

In the last three seasons, Robey-Coleman has broken up 20 passes, recorded three interceptions and made 96 total tackles. He’s only allowed four touchdown receptions in coverage the last two years, and a combined completion rate of less than 65% since 2018.

Robey-Coleman, of course, was the one who helped send the Rams to the Super Bowl two seasons ago when he got away with blatant pass interference against the Saints in the NFC Championship Game, with the penalty going uncalled.

With Robey-Coleman out of the picture, the Rams will lean more heavily on David Long and Darious Williams more often in the secondary next season. Long was a third-round pick in 2019 but played sparingly behind Jalen Ramsey and Troy Hill.

6 cornerbacks the Jets should target in free agency

Jets Wire takes a look at six cornerbacks Joe Douglas and company should target in free agency.

The Jets struggled at multiple positions in 2019, but no unit was worse than New York’s cornerbacks.

Aside from Brian Poole, who is set to hit free agency, the Jets got little to no production out of their corners throughout the season. Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts were downright awful. Bless Austin showed some flashes of potential in his rookie year, but found himself benched by season’s end. Arthur Maulet and Maurice Canady had their moments, but are not exactly proven starters that New York can rely on entering 2020.

Fortunately for Joe Douglas and the Jets, there are plenty of solid free agent cornerbacks available this offseason. Which ones should New York target? Let’s take a look.

Chris Harris

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Although he is getting up there in age, Harris remains one of football’s upper echelon cornerbacks. Opposing quarterbacks seldom threw at the 31-year-old in 2019 as Harris anchored a Broncos secondary that ranked just outside the top 20 in passing yards allowed per game.

Harris is by far the best cornerback on this year’s free agent market. However, he is on the wrong side of 30 and will be worth around $11 million per year, according to Spotrac. The Jets have been burned handing out large contracts to aging corners in recent years, which could give the front office pause on pursuing the four-time Pro Bowler.

Will Douglas and company go all-in and take a shot at bringing Harris to the Big Apple? If New York deems the veteran worth his price tag, it will be firmly in the race for his services.
