Special teams coordinator Mike Daniels praises NaJee Thompson

Ahead of his regular season debut, special teams coordinator Mike Daniels explained what makes UDFA NaJee Thompson a solid special teamer.

When the Minnesota Vikings signed NaJee Thompson as an undrafted rookie, many didn’t expect him to make the 53-man roster.

Ultimately, Thompson was a limited player. He offered little upside on offense or defense, and his only path to making the roster would be on special teams.

However, after two preseason games, it appeared that Thompson was a lock to make the roster.

During those two games, Thompson dominated as a punt gunner and finished with multiple stops to limit returns. From there, it seemed like a matter of when, not if, Thompson makes the roster.

Ahead of Thompson’s first regular season game, special teams coordinator Mike Daniels, who was partly responsible for discovering Thompson, explained how Thompson came on their radar.

““I actually found [Thompson] his junior year,” Daniels said. “When we were in draft meetings, I was speaking highly on him and he’s not even coming out this year … You kind of just do your research.

“I actually had a cousin of mine, my first cousin, that played at Georgia Southern, and he kind of mentioned him to me … So, from there, I did my research, and he was an All-American special teams player, former receiver turned corner. From there, you just turn on the tape, and he’s just flying around, flashing everywhere.”

Thompson’s special teams film in college was a sight to behold. A track star in high school, Thompson showcased a rare blend of speed and power. His versatility on punt and kickoff teams also helped him capture the interest of NFL teams.

Matt Daniels says it’s a “kicking competition” between Joseph and Podlesny

Despite being a solid kicker for the Vikings, it appears that Greg Joseph will still have to earn his starting spot.

When the Minnesota Vikings opened training camp, it seemed unlikely they would move away from Greg Joseph as their starting kicker.

Over two seasons with the Vikings, Joseph has developed into a reliable leg nearly automatic within 50 yards. Despite struggling past 50 yards last season (Joseph missed six kicks from this range), it seemed like the Vikings were well-positioned in the three specialist areas.

However, if special teams coordinator Mike Daniels’s comments are any indication, the Vikings have opened up a kicking competition. According to Sam Ekstrom of Locked On Minnesota, Daniels said it is a “kicking competition” between Joseph and undrafted rookie Jack Podlesny.

Podlesny was a standout kicker at the University of Georgia and quickly bloomed into one of the country’s most reliable legs. Over three seasons, Podlesny made around 80% of his field goals, including a career-high 83% last season.

With training camp still in its infancy, it’s possible that Daniels is just trying to keep Joseph motivated. However, it is something to watch as we head towards preseason.

Vikings UDFA NaJee Thompson embraces special teams as path to the NFL

The path to making an NFL roster as a UDFA is a challenge, and one that Georgia Southern CB NaJee Thompson welcomes with open arms.

For the undrafted free agents signed after the NFL Draft, making the 53-man roster is an uphill battle.

It starts with rookie minicamp, which begins just two weeks after the draft for the Minnesota Vikings. Then, there’s a chance to impress during training camp and preseason and earn a role on the Vikings’ regular season roster

For the most part, those roles are special teams-based. Few undrafted rookies start their career with a role on defense and those that do likely earned their respect on special teams.

While it may be a lost art to some, special teams are an avenue to living out the NFL dream. As a result, rookies embrace the trade, becoming as good as they can be.

Few undrafted rookies have taken the path of Vikings’ undrafted free agent NaJee Thompson.

Chiefs host five players for tryouts on Tuesday

The #Chiefs hosted five defenders on tryouts on Tuesday, including former #Packers DT Mike Daniels.

The Kansas City Chiefs hosted several defensive players for tryouts on Tuesday. This comes following the decision to release RB/WR Jerrion Ealy from the practice squad.

Four of the players the team hosted are linebackers, which makes plenty of sense given the loss of veteran LB Elijah Lee, who was poached from the practice squad by the Chicago Bears last week. The other player that the team hosted is a veteran defensive tackle who got his NFL career started in Green Bay.

Below is a quick look at each of the players that the team had in for tryouts on Tuesday:

Bengals elevate former Packers DL Mike Daniels from practice squad for Super Bowl LVI

Former Packers DL Mike Daniels will be playing in Super Bowl LVI as a member of the Bengals on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Green Bay Packers fans should recognize the big man wearing No. 76 for the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.

The Bengals elevated former Packers defensive lineman Mike Daniels from the practice squad to the gameday roster for Sunday’s season-ending showdown against the Los Angeles Rams.

The elevation gives Daniels a real chance to play in his first-ever Super Bowl.

Daniels, a fourth-round pick of the Packers in 2012, appeared in 102 games and made the postseason five times over seven total seasons in Green Bay. He’s been with the Bengals for the last two seasons in various capacities, including this season on the practice squad.

Daniels, now 32, has been on the field for three games with the Bengals in 2021, including one playoff game. He played 64 snaps on defense over two games in the regular season.

Daniels never got a chance to play in a Super Bowl as a member of the Packers. He reached the NFC title game in 2014 and 2016.

The Packers released him before the 2019 season. He spent one season with the Detroit Lions before signing with the Bengals in 2020. He’s played 13 total games for the team.

A wrecking ball on the field in his prime, Daniels tallied 29.0 sacks and 47 tackles for losses while with the Packers, and he went to the Pro Bowl in 2017.

If nothing else, Daniels’ opportunity with the Bengals should give Packers fans a team to cheer for on Sunday.

Baby Aaron: Mike Daniels throws out a new nickname for Bengals QB Joe Burrow

A Bengals veteran has a new nickname for Joe Burrow.

About a year ago, veteran defensive tackle Mike Daniels threw out an Aaron Rodgers comparison for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

Now he’s doing it again.

Hitting the airwaves in the days leading up to this year’s training camp, Daniels casually threw out the comparison, then had to elaborate when that comment took a segment on GMFB a bit off the rails:

“You know what I say about Joe Burrow man, that’s like Baby Aaron. I’m really looking forward to getting back with my guys here in a few days…

…you don’t see many rookies step into a locker room, you would think he’s like a four-year vet…to have that at the quarterback position, that means he has the right type of savvy, the right type of poise that you only see from guys like Aaron.”

Daniels is far from the first veteran player — on Burrow’s team or from another — to comment on his poise, attitude and leadership. He certainly won’t be the last.

And for what it’s worth, Daniels also had some really fun comments during the segment about Burrow being the savior and how passionate the team’s fanbase is.

If nothing else, here’s to hoping “Baby Aaron” has some staying power as a nickname.

Mike Daniels reveals why he re-signed with Bengals — and it’s a good sign

Cincinnati Bengals DL Mike Daniels has huge praise for head coach Zac Taylor.

[mm-video type=video id=01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk playlist_id=01eqbw0bft20de1r4d player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk/01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk-04f4d3cf7f0a4168b43ea421b7b766c8.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals made an aggressive move last year in acquiring Mike Daniels to help salvage an injury-ravaged defensive tackle position.

Daniels only ended up getting in 11 games but the team brought him back on a one-year pact this offseason.

The soon-to-be-32-year-old defensive tackle recently went on the “Jim Rome Show” and explained why he chose to re-up with the Bengals, according to Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“The coaching. I can’t say enough great things about Zac Taylor. And then you got Joe Burrow at quarterback. I think we get to see one of the young greats, and I get to actually be there.”

Daniels is a big get for the Bengals given his effectiveness as a rotational player and leader in the locker room.

But perhaps more interesting here is Daniels’ praise for the much-maligned Zac Taylor-led coaching staff that to date is just 6-25-1. That a free agent who could have his choice of plenty of teams if he fully tested the market identified this coaching staff as a reason for re-upping is pretty notable.

It’s a small thing, but it echoes some of the things other Bengals players have said. There’s a little more weight behind it because Daniels could have just as easily left town if he didn’t like what he was seeing — and he would know what a good team looks like after many years in Green Bay.

Bengals bring back DT Mike Daniels

The Cincinnati Bengals are bringing back one of their own.

[mm-video type=video id=01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk playlist_id=01eqbw0bft20de1r4d player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk/01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk-04f4d3cf7f0a4168b43ea421b7b766c8.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals are re-upping with defensive lineman Mike Daniels after liking what they saw from the veteran last year.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news: “The Bengals are re-signing veteran DL Mike Daniels to a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million, per source.”

Daniels joined the team after the defensive tackle spot suffered a wealth of setbacks last year and ultimately played in 11 games while serving a key rotational role.

Going into his age-32 season, Daniels is better positioned this year to serve as a depth piece who can be more effective on a pitch count. He’ll rotate in with D.J. Reader, a returning Josh Tupou and new free-agent add Larry Ogunjobi.

Even with this move, the Bengals could still add further pieces to the line in free agency or the draft, especially after last year’s depth woes.

Bengals down several players to COVID-19, illness just before kickoff vs. Ravens

The Bengals had one player test positive for COVID-19 while another is showing symptoms, all right before playing the Baltimore Ravens.

The Baltimore Ravens will take on the Cincinnati Bengals at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday — just a few hours away. But with the Bengals having one player test positive for COVID-19 and another showing symptoms, the coronavirus is looking to make Week 17 a wild one once again.

On Saturday morning, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Cincinnati defensive tackle Mike Daniels had tested positive for COVID-19 while another player was showing symptoms. By Sunday, the Bengals had ruled out both Daniels and cornerback Mackensie Alexander due to illness, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. With Cincinnati already ruling out cornerback William Jackson III and linebacker Logan Wilson on the injury report, further losses will only make this regular-season finale harder on the 4-10-1 Bengals.

So many impact players missing this game due to either injury or COVID-19 is a big blow for Cincinnati. While the Bengals didn’t have anything to play for but pride and a potential playoff-spoiler role, finishing strong would be a good end to what has been a difficult rebuilding season for a young roster and coach.

On the flip side, the absence of those players is a big boost for the Ravens, who are in a must-win situation this week, needing to win to guarantee themselves a playoff berth. With Baltimore’s offense performing much better in recent weeks, the absence of a starting defensive lineman and two starting cornerbacks should give the Ravens a better opportunity to get out to a comfortable lead early, where they play their best football.

Report: Bengals’ Mike Daniels tests positive for COVID-19, team fears many close contacts

The Cincinnati Bengals had one player test positive this weekend.

The Cincinnati Bengals fear multiple COVID-19 close contacts after defensive lineman Mike Daniels reportedly tested positive ahead of the team’s Week 17 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Cincinnati has an additional player with symptoms and has pushed back Saturday’s scrimmage to perform contact tracing.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk added the following: “A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the Bengals fear up to 10 players could be deemed “close contacts” with Daniels and placed on the COVID-19 reserve list.”

Daniels won’t be able to play Sunday in the season finale, and that will presumably apply to any players deemed as close contacts. The NFL has made it clear through actions all season that it won’t delay a game due to competitive reasons, so even a double-digit count being unavailable likely won’t encourage the NFL to change the game’s time.

We’ll update with more once contact tracing concludes and more is known about the game.
