49ers place 2 on practice squad IR, add 2 replacements in playoff bye week roster moves

The #49ers made a couple tweaks to their practice squad during their playoff bye week.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a handful of roster moves as they begin their on-field playoff preparations. Most of the movement came on the practice squad where defensive backs Tayler Hawkins and Jason Verrett were placed on IR.  To replace them on the practice roster the 49ers added defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu and cornerback Terrence Mitchell. San Francisco also opened the practice window for safety and special teams ace George Odum.

Hawkins hurt his wrist late in the 49ers’ Week 18 loss to the Rams. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday said Hawkins would need surgery. Now he’s on IR with his season likely over.

Verrett suffered a shoulder injury in the lead up to Week 18 that also required surgery. He’s also done for the year following his placement on IR.

As for the additions. Okuayinonu gives the team some in-house depth on the defensive front. He’s in his second NFL season and appeared in six games last year with the Titans as an undrafted rookie from the University of Maryland. Okuayinonu posted 0.5 sacks and 11 tackles. He’d yet to appear in a game this year after being waived by Tennessee in January.

Mitchell will be a familiar face for close followers of the 49ers. He was briefly with the team in training camp. The eight-year veteran was a seventh-round pick of the Cowboys in the 2014 draft out of Oregon and spent time on six teams during his career. Mitchell has 94 NFL games under his belt with 56 starts. He’s posted 305 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 63 pass breakups and nine interceptions.

49ers CB Jason Verrett to have season-ending shoulder surgery

Jason Verrett hurt his shoulder and will require surgery. He’s out for the season.

49ers cornerback Jason Verrett is out for the season after suffering a shoulder injury in practice according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Verrett will require surgery on a rotator cuff injury after taking a hard fall during practice in the lead up to the team’s Week 18 game vs. the Rams.

This is another in a long list of injury problems for Verrett, who has played more than six games only twice in his career, and four or fewer in five years. He played just one game with San Francisco this season against the Ravens in Week 16.

Shanahan indicated Verrett was due to play significant snaps in the 49ers’ season-finale. The veteran CB was on the practice squad, so his eventual placement on IR won’t open a roster spot.

Verrett played one game for San Francisco in 2019, 13 in 2020, one in 2021 and none in 2022. Just since joining the 49ers he’s suffered ACL, Achilles and now shoulder injuries.

49ers officially add CB Jason Verrett to practice squad

Jason Verrett is back with the 49ers.

The 49ers on Monday announced the addition of veteran cornerback Jason Verrett to their practice squad. They had one spot open on the practice squad after wide receiver Chris Conley was promoted Saturday.

Verrett has been a target of the 49ers for a few weeks and they finally came to a deal with the one-time Pro Bowler. There’s no immediate plan for him to join the active roster, and head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated their goal is to get him in the building and evaluate where he is physically before determining whether he’ll land a 53-man roster spot.

Injuries have derailed Verrett in virtually every season since he was selected by the Chargers in the first round of the 2014 draft. However, in 2015 when he played a career-high 14 games he was a Pro Bowler. And in 2020 when he played 13 games for the 49ers he played at a Pro Bowl level.

It’s unlikely the 49ers are relying heavily on Verrett given his injury history. He’s a strong, well-liked veteran presence though who should be helpful for San Francisco whether he suits up on a game day or not.

Report: 49ers to add CB Jason Verrett to practice squad

The #49ers are bringing Jason Verrett back on the practice squad.

The 49ers are bringing back cornerback Jason Verrett according to a report from NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

Verrett has been on San Francisco’s radar for several weeks and head coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated the team was trying to get the veteran CB signed. Maiocco reported Verrett will join the 49ers’ practice squad.

Having a veteran like Verrett in the building will be valuable, but with injuries in the secondary mounting the team may at some point have to turn to the former first-round pick.

Injuries have defined Verrett’s career, but in 2020 when he played in 13 games for San Francisco it was clear how talented he is. Relying on him too heavily would probably be a mistake, but as internal depth on the practice squad it’s hard to find better than Verrett.

49ers trying to sign veteran CB Jason Verrett

A reunion could be on the way in Santa Clara.

A reunion could be on the way in Santa Clara.

After being released by the Houston Texans practice squad, the San Francisco 49ers brought in veteran cornerback Jason Verrett for a workout before hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11 on Sunday.

Following his workout, Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers could potentially sign the former 49ers corner to their practice squad sometime next week although nothing is yet official.

Via @CamInman on Twitter:

Verrett spent three seasons with the 49ers before recently joining the Texans practice squad with former San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. Verrett shined at times for the 49ers but injuries continued to plague his career, playing only 15 games over three seasons.

Verrett suffered a ruptured achilles during practice in the November with the 49ers last season.

Prior to joining the 49ers, Verrett played four seasons with the San Diego / Los Angeles Chargers. During his second season in 2015, Verrett was named to the Pro Bowl.

Verrett was drafted in the first round of the 2014 draft out of TCU. Prior to his tine at TCU, Verrett spent time playing at the junior college level in the Bay Area at Santa Rosa Junior College.

Verrett could bring a proven veteran corner that’s familiar with the system to a young defensive back group with the 49ers.

Texans sign former Chargers, 49ers CB Jason Verrett to practice squad

The Houston Texans have brought in one of DeMeco Ryans’ former cornerbacks in Jason Verrett, an addition to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans are adding another former cornerback from DeMeco Ryans’ time with the San Francisco 49ers

The team announced Wednesday they have signed former San Diego Chargers and 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett to the practice squad.

The former 2014 first-rounder has been hobbled with injuries since 2017 when a knee injury limited the TCU product to one game. In 2018, Verrett tore his Achilles in training camp, and then signed with the 49ers in 2019 where he played just one game before an ankle injury claimed his season.

The only season where Verrett has been healthy since leaving the Chargers is in 2020. Verrett generated 60 combined tackles, two interceptions, and seven pass breakups through 13 games for the 49ers.

In 2021, Verrett played one game as he tore his ACL in Week 1. In 2022, a stint on the PUP list delayed his start to the season, which was short-lived anyway given he tore his Achilles in November.

Jason Verrett among 4 CBs worked out by 49ers

The #49ers hosted Jason Verrett among other CBs for workouts.

The 49ers held workouts with a quartet of defensive backs, including old friend Jason Verrett. Verrett joined Xavier Crawford, Michael Ojemudia and Kendall Sheffield per the NFL’s transaction wire.

Verrett spent the 2019-2021 seasons with San Francisco and played 15 games across those three years. A torn ACL cost him his 2019 campaign after just two snaps. In 2020 he played at a Pro Bowl level for 13 games, but then tore his ACL in the 2021 season opener. In 2022 he started the season on PUP, but tore his Achilles shortly after being activated.

It’s likely the 49ers are working out CBs to add to their practice squad after a pair of injuries at the position pushed them to sign CB Tre Swilling to the active roster. They may have also been keeping their free agent list updated.

Ojemudia signed with the Rams practice squad per KPRC2 in Houston’s Aaron Wilson.

Crawford was a sixth-round pick of the Texans in 2019. He’s played in 27 games across his four-year career with the Texans, Bears, Seahawks and Dolphins. Crawford has 24 tackles in his 27 games.

The Falcons made Sheffield a fourth-round pick in 2019. He played 38 games with 20 starts in three seasons and had six pass breakups, two forced fumbles and 101 tackles.

49ers CB Jason Verrett suffers torn Achilles, out for the season

49ers CB Jason Verrett can’t catch a break. Verrett’s season is done after he tore his Achilles in practice.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett just can’t catch a break.

Verrett suffered a torn achilles tendon during Wednesday’s practice, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. It’s another blow to San Francisco’s secondary, which already lost cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (ACL) for the year.

Verrett was recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 1 of last season, and he returned to practice a few weeks ago. He started the 2022 season on the PUP list and was poised to make his return Sunday against the Chargers.

Verrett has struggled with injuries during his eight-year career, which now includes two Achilles tears, two ACL tears, a severe ankle injury and a torn labrum, per Ari Meirov.

Jason Verrett nearing return, could debut vs. Chargers

Jason Verrett was close to returning in Week 8. Now 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful to get the veteran CB back against the Chargers.

Jason Verrett was eligible to play against the Rams in Week 8, but was scratched and listed among the team’s inactives. He was close to debuting at SoFi Stadium, and now he has another chance to make his mark for the 49ers in the 2022 season.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday told reporters Verrett was almost ready to go against the Rams, and the additional week off could put him in line to face the team that picked him in the first round of the 2014 draft.

“I thought he was real close, we considered him last week or two weeks ago,” Shanahan said. “I know he was here for a lot of the time when we were away. I know he did some stuff down on his own, where he goes and so I expect him to be further along this week. I’ll see him out there in about an hour, but hopefully he’s closer.”

Verrett was officially listed as a limited participant in Wednesday’s session. He’s yet to participate in full since rejoining the club off the PUP list after Week 7.

His return wouldn’t necessarily need to come with a full workload either. Shanahan intimated before Week 8 that Verrett could see action in a limited role, and again Wednesday said there could be something of a platoon situation at CB that gets Verrett into the game without putting a massive strain on his body his first game back.

While the team may not necessarily be relying on Verrett to come back at full strength, anything he can give their secondary would be a nice bonus with Emmanuel Moseley out for the year. The 49ers could use Verrett, but it’s clear they’re going to take his return slow, and it may begin Sunday night.
