New York Rangers at Seattle Kraken odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s New York Rangers at Seattle Kraken odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Rangers (5-2-1) face the Seattle Kraken (3-4-1) Sunday at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Rangers vs. Kraken odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Rangers rolled up a 4-0 win over the Blue Jackets Friday before heading out of town to kick off a four-game West Coast swing. RW Ryan Reaves is travelling with the team but is unlikely to take the ice against Seattle due to a lower-body injury.

The expansion Kraken have won back-to-back games in regulation for the first time in club history, including a 5-1 victory against the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday, their first Original Six opponent.

Rangers at Kraken projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (4-1-1, 1.81 GAA, .944 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Philipp Grubauer (3-3-1, 2.93 GAA, .897 SV%)

Shesterkin recorded the shutout last time out against the Columbus Blue Jackets, turning aside all 31 of the shots he faced for his third career shutout in the NHL.

Grubauer has picked up victories in consecutive starts, allowing just one goal on 31 shots last time out against the Minnesota Wild Thursday, and one goal on 24 shots against the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday.

Rangers at Kraken odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Kraken 3, Rangers 2

Money line

The KRAKEN (-105) are a decent play on home ice, as they have outscored the opposition 9-2 across their last two games and are really playing solid defensive hockey. Grubauer was a tremendous addition to help steady the crease for the first-year team.

Against the spread

The Kraken +1.5 (-300) will cost you three times your potential return, and that’s just insanely expensive for a little bit of insurance. Seattle is playing good hockey right now, and you should just trust it straight up on the money line.

AVOID.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-105) is the play in this first-ever matchup between these two sides.

The Rangers have struggled to light the lamp, going for just 2.4 goals per game, 26th in the NHL, and they’re sixth with 2.3 goals per game allowed. The Under is 6-1-1 for the Blueshirts this season.

The Under is 2-2-2 across the last six outings for the Kraken, including 1-1-1 in three dates at home so far.

Columbus Blue Jackets at New Jersey Devils odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Columbus Blue Jackets at New Jersey Devils odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Columbus Blue Jackets (4-3-0) face the New Jersey Devils (4-2-0) Sunday at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Blue Jackets vs. Devils odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Blue Jackets were blanked 4-0 Friday at Madison Square Garden by the New York Rangers, and have totaled just five goals scored across their last three outings. The Under is 5-1 across the last six for Columbus.

The Devils doubled up the Penguins on the road Saturday. New Jersey has alternated wins and losses in each of its last five outings. The Under is 2-1-2 across the past five contests.

Blue Jackets at Devils projected goalies

Elvis Merzlikins (4-1-0, 1.98 GAA, .939 SV%) vs. Scott Wedgewood (0-2-0, 3.45 GAA, .878 SV%)

Merzlikins was on the short end of Friday’s loss against the Rangers. However, he made 33 saves, the third time this season he’s made 33 or more saves, as he faced his second-highest shot total of the season.

Wedgewood has been on the short end in each of his two appearances. He stopped 20 of 22 shots in a relief appearance Tuesday against the Calgary Flames.

Blue Jackets at Devils odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Blue Jackets 4, Devils 2

Money line

The BLUE JACKETS (+102) are short ‘dogs on the road, but the goaltender matchup is squarely in their favor. Merzlikins has been on fire, and the trends are also very much in the favor of the road team.

Columbus is 21-7 in the past 28 meetings with New Jersey, and it is 6-1 in the past seven trips to Newark.

Against the spread

The Blue Jackets +1.5 (-280) are way too expensive, costing you nearly three times your potential return if you want a little bit of insurance. If you like the Jackets, just play them straight up.

AVOID.

Over/Under

This total has come off the board but it was listed at 6.5 at the time of writing.

If it opens back up at that number then UNDER 6.5 (-130) is the lean here. Merzlikins hasn’t allowed much of anything. While the Blueshirts got to him in his most recent start, no one is going to confuse New Jersey’s mediocre offense with that of the Rangers.

The Under is also 6-2 in the previous eight meetings in this series, and 8-2-2 in the past 12 battles in Newark, so the trends are in your favor, too.

New Jersey Devils at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s New Jersey Devils at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (3-2-0) face the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-2-2) Saturday at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Devils vs. Penguins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Devils are coming off a 5-3 home loss to the Calgary Flames Tuesday and have rested ever since. This will be the first road game of the season for New Jersey.

The Penguins were dumped 4-0 by the Flames Thursday, dropping a second straight outing while being outscored 9-1 during the span. The Over has connected in five of the past seven games overall.

Devils at Penguins odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Devils +125 (bet $100 to win $125) | Penguins -155 (bet $155 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Devils +1.5 (-210) | Penguins -1.5 (+160)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -135 | U: +110)

Devils at Penguins projected goalies

Jonathan Bernier (2-0-0, 2.48 GAA, .911 SV%) vs. Tristan Jarry (3-1-1, 1.78 GAA, .933 SV%)

Bernier has picked up wins over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks and expansion Seattle Kraken last time out. He allowed just two goals on 29 shots against Seattle Tuesday.

Jarry allowed three goals on 29 shots last time out Tuesday against the defending champ Tampa Bay Lightning. Before that, he had allowed two or fewer goals in each of his first four starts, going 3-0-1.

Devils at Penguins odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Devils 1

Money line

The PENGUINS (-155) were blanked last time out against the Flames, but they still have managed 3.4 goals per game to rank ninth in the NHL. You can expect Pittsburgh to bounce back in a big way, and it will likely lean upon its No. 1 penalty kill.

Against the spread

The PENGUINS -1.5 (+160) are worth a small-unit play, but it might take a late empty-net goal to get your wager across the finish line. Pittsburgh has won five straight against New Jersey, and four of the past five in the Steel City. Look for the Pens to maintain their dominance and get it done once again, doubling up the Devs.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (+110) is the slight lean here at plus money. The Under is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in Pittsburgh, while going 4-1 in the past five for the Pens as a home favorite.

Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Minnesota Wild (5-2-0) face the Colorado Avalanche (3-4-0) Saturday at Ball Arena in Denver, Colo. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Wild vs. Avalanche odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Wild opened the season a perfect 4-0-0, but they’re just 1-2-0 across the past five. They’re coming off a 4-1 loss at Seattle Thursday. The Under has hit in the past two outings, and Minnesota is averaging just 2.0 goals per game over the previous three contests.

The Avalanche posted a much-needed win in St. Louis Thursday, 4-3. In its three wins, Colorado has scored exactly four goals in each contest. In the four losses, the Avs are averaging just 2.0 goals per game while allowing 4.5 goals per outing.

Wild at Avalanche projected goalies

Cam Talbot (5-1-0, 2.47 GAA, .914 SV%) vs. Darcy Kuemper (3-3-0, 3.19 GAA, .893 SV%)

Talbot was surprised by the expansion Kraken Thursday in Seattle, although he allowed just two goals on 36 shots while the home side netted a pair of empty-net goals to make the score look worse than it was. He has allowed two or fewer goals in four of his six outings.

Kuemper coughed up three goals on 18 shots in a 4-3 win in St. Louis, his second straight road win. However, he is just 1-2-0 in three starts so far at home for his new organization.

Wild at Avalanche odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 4, Wild 2

Money line

The AVALANCHE (-175) are a strong play on home ice against the visiting Wild (+140), a team they have dominated over the years. Colorado is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings at Ball Arena, and the home side has won five of the previous seven battles overall in this series.

Against the spread

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (+145) are worth a shot on the puck line, although they have covered just once in their three wins to date. That puck line win came Oct. 13 against Chicago in the regular-season opener. But given Colorado’s dominance in this series, the Avs are the play. Colorado covered the most two recent home games against Minnesota, outscoring them 11-1 last March 18-20.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-125) is the lean here based upon the series trends. The Over has connected in each of the past five head-to-head meetings. While the Under is 4-0 in the past four road games for Minnesota, the Over is 5-2-1 in the past eight games overall for Colorado.

Colorado Avalanche at St. Louis Blues odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Colorado Avalanche at St. Louis Blues odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Colorado Avalanche (2-4-0) face the St. Louis Blues (5-0-0) Thursday at Enterprise Center in St. Louis. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Avalanche vs. Blues odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Avalanche are on the road for the fourth time in their last five games. They’re 1-2-0 in three outings away from home this season. The Avs lost 5-3 to the Blues Oct. 16 as the Over hit when the teams met in the season opener.

The Blues blanked the Los Angeles Kings 3-0 last time out Monday, sweeping a two-game set at home. It isn’t all good for St. Louis though, as C Ryan O’Reilly and LW Brandon Saad are sidelined due to COVID protocol.

Avalanche at Blues odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Avalanche -130 (bet $130 to win $100) | Blues +105 (bet $100 to win $105)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Avalanche -1.5 (+175) | Blues +1.5 (-240)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: +112 | U: -140)

Avalanche at Blues projected goalies

Darcy Kuemper (2-3-0, 3.22 GAA, .900 SV%) vs. Jordan Binnington (4-0-0, 2.75 GAA, .919 SV%)

Kuemper allowed four goals on 27 shots in the first meeting with the Blues Oct. 16 in Denver. He made 26 saves on 28 shots in his last start against the Vegas Golden Knights Tuesday.

Binnington is a perfect 4-for-4 so far, but he didn’t have to face a Colorado team at full power in the opener. This time will be different, but he is also on home ice.

Avalanche at Blues odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 4, Blues 2

Money line

The AVALANCHE (-130) are worth a look in this revenge game of sorts, as they look to hand the Blues (+110) their first loss of the season. This time, it’s St. Louis which is shorthanded due to injuries and COVID. The shoe is on the other foot.

While Colorado is 7-19 in the past 26 trips to St. Louis, it has won four of the past five in the series, with the favorite going 36-15 in the previous 51 meetings.

Against the spread

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (+175) is worth a roll of the dice, as they look to turn the tables on the Blues. The Blues are missing a huge chunk of their offense without O’Reilly and Saad.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-140) is the lean, regardless of what the trends say. The Over is 4-0 in the past four meetings, and 5-1-1 in the past seven in St. Louis. However, expect Kuemper to be at his best against a Blues team missing a lot of firepower on the front end.

Boston Bruins at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Boston Bruins at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Boston Bruins (3-2-0) face the Carolina Hurricanes (5-0-0) Thursday at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Bruins vs. Hurricanes odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Bruins were dumped 4-1 in Sunrise, Fla., by the unbeaten Florida Panthers, and now they have to face another team with an unblemished record. The B’s had a season low with just one lone goal after averaging 3.5 goals per game in the first four outings.

The Hurricanes pounded the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 in Monday’s game behind former Leafs backstop Frederik Andersen. The Dane tendy has allowed exactly one goal in each of the past three games.

Bruins at Hurricanes projected goalies

Jeremy Swayman (1-1-0, 3.02 GAA, .885 SV%) vs. Frederik Andersen (5-0-0, 1.60 GAA, .946 SV%)

Swayman is back in the crease after Linus Ullmark’s third consecutive start Wednesday in Florida. After winning the first two, he was tagged by the Panthers.

Andersen has allowed just one run in each of his past three, and he has the Hurricanes off to its first 5-0 start in franchise history. The backup Antti Raanta hasn’t been needed yet, although he is likely to see action soon with a back-to-back with Chicago on Friday.

Bruins at Hurricanes odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 3, Hurricanes 2

Money line

The BRUINS (+105) are a strong play at plus-money. While Andersen has been red-hot in his new stomping grounds, the B’s used to abuse him when he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Look for Boston to bounce back after getting treated rudely in Sunrise by the Panthers in the front end of the back-to-back set. The Bruins have won four straight skates in Raleigh, and the B’s are 37-18 in the past 55 meetings overall.

Against the spread

The Bruins +1.5 (-240) are too expensive at this price, and insurance isn’t needed. Just play them for a much better value straight up.

AVOID, and just play the money line.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (+100) is the lean, but it’s only worth a small-unit play. The Under has connected in six of the past eight meetings in this series. The Under is also 18-7-2 in the previous 27 games at home dating back to last season, while going 5-1 in the past six as a home favorite.

Vegas Golden Knights at Dallas Stars odds, picks, and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Vegas Golden Knights at Dallas Stars odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Vegas Golden Knights (2-4-0) and Dallas Stars (3-3-0) square off Wednesday night at the American Airlines Center. Puck drop is slated for 8:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Golden Knights vs. Stars odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

Vegas is playing its third game in four days and is coming off an impressive 3-1 win at the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday. A banged-up Golden Knights team has struggled in the early going. Vegas went into last night’s game in Denver averaging just 2.0 goals per game.

The Stars last played Monday when they dropped a 4-1 decision at the Columbus Blue Jackets. Dallas has also been a bit of a disappointment in early-season games, especially offensively. The Stars have scored more than 2 goals just twice in six games.

Golden Knights at Stars projected goalies

Laurent Brossoit (0-0-0, 6.00 GAA, .875 SV%) vs. Anton Khudobin (1-1-0, 2.49 GAA, .909 SV%)

Brossoit is appearing in his first game since Oct. 14, when he stopped 14-of-16 shots against the Los Angeles Kings. The 28-year-old logged a .913 SV% and 2.75 GAA over 54 games for the Winnipeg Jets over the last three years.

Khudobin is making his second start and third appearance of the season. He stopped 24 of 27 shots faced in a 3-2 loss at the Ottawa Senators Oct. 17 in his last start.

Golden Knights at Stars odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Stars 4, Golden Knights 2

Money line

PASS: The Stars are the lean but there’s more value in getting them in a multi-score win.

Against the spread

Defensive-minded Dallas is coming off allowing four goals to Columbus. Look for a get-right effort against Vegas on the back end of road double.

BACK THE STARS -1.5 (+165).

Over/Under

The Under is 6-0 in the Stars’ six games this season but this game is priced right for buy-back.

Dallas is shooting a league-low 4.1% in 5-on-5 play. The Stars ranked fifth in converting power plays a year ago. There is some untapped offense on their end, and Vegas games have been contests with a lot of scoring chances at both ends of the ice.

TAKE THE OVER 5.5 (+100).

Boston Bruins at Florida Panthers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Boston Bruins at Florida Panthers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Boston Bruins (3-1-0) face the Florida Panthers (6-0-0) Wednesday at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Fla. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Bruins vs. Panthers odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Bruins cooled off the red-hot San Jose Sharks Sunday with a 4-3 victory behind the goaltending of Linus Ullmark. The Swede has backstopped the last two games for Boston, both victories.

The Panthers are six up and six down so far as they topped the Arizona Coyotes 5-3 last time out. They’re just the 25th team in NHL history to open a perfect 6-0-0. The Over result against the Coyotes snapped a 3-0 Under run for Florida.

Bruins at Panthers projected goalies

Linus Ullmark (2-0-0, 2.00 GAA, .935 SV%) vs. Sergei Bobrovsky (4-0-0, 1.99 GAA, .942 SV%)

Ullmark has won back-to-back starts at the Buffalo Sabres Friday and against San Jose Sunday. He has allowed just 4 goals on 62 shots overall.

Bobrovsky has been stellar in his last three outings after he coughed up 4 goals to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Panthers’ season-opener. Bob has allowed just four total goals on 90 shots across the past three games, all victories.

Bruins at Panthers odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Panthers 4, Bruins 3

Money line

The PANTHERS (-135) are a good play. Strike while the iron is hot, as this offense has registered 4 or more goals in each of their six victories. Florida ranks fourth in the NHL with 4.5 goals scored per outing, and it’s third with just 2.0 goals per game allowed.

The Bruins have struggled on the offensive end of the ice, and the power-play has just been so-so; the B’s are also rather marginal defensively. Look for Florida to keep up their winning ways.

Against the spread

The Bruins +1.5 (-230) are a little on the expensive side if you’re looking for insurance, and I just don’t trust them to win outright in an Ullmark vs. Bobrovsky goalie matchup. However, Boston has the offensive firepower to keep it close.

AVOID, and just play the money line.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-125) is the lean, although it’s only worth a small-unit play. The Over has hit just once in the past five for Florida. The Over is 2-1 in the past four for Boston as the Bruins are averaging 3.5 goals per game overall.

Vegas Golden Knights at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks, and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Vegas Golden Knights at Colorado Avalanche odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Vegas Golden Knights (1-4-0) and Colorado Avalanche (2-3-0) meet Tuesday night in Denver. Puck drop at Ball Arena is slated for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Golden Knights vs. Avalanche odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

Vegas has lost four of its first five games. Injuries have been a problem, and the Golden Knights have struggled offensively. F Max Pacioretty (shoulder) and F Mark Stone (lower body) are out, and that makes for 251 points from the last two seasons on the shelf. What’s left is averaging just 2.0 goals per game (28th NHL).

The Avs have been dealing with injuries and COVID-19 protocols. However, they got star F Nathan MacKinnon back from the COVID-19 list on a recent three-game road trip. McKinnon had a goal and 2 assists in a shutout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday.

Golden Knights at Avalanche projected goalies

Robin Lehner (1-4-0, 3.28 GAA, .908 SV%) vs. Darcy Kuemper (2-2-0, 3.51 GAA, .894 SV%)

Lehner stopped 24-of-26 in a 2-0 loss against the New York Islanders Sunday. He’s facing the Avs for the first time since Colorado got to him for 7 goals (5 even-strength, 2 power-play) in a May 30 playoff game.

Kuemper is off to a bit of a slow start. The 31-year-old clocked a .922 SV% over the last three seasons in Arizona. Kuemper has a solid history of performing well at home (.921 SV%).

Golden Knights at Avalanche odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 4, Golden Knights 2

Money line

Both teams are struggling, however, puck-possession and shot analytics indicate Colorado as at least playing a more representative brand of hockey thus far.

The Avs are returning home after a three-game road trip. Colorado was 8-0 last season in home games on the heels of multi-game trips.

BACK THE AVALANCHE (-190).

Against the spread

Consider splitting action on the Avs, going with a half-unit on the money line and a half-unit on the puck line. In those eight return-home victories last season, four wins were by margins of 3 goals or more. One of those — a 5-1 triumph — was against the Vegas Golden Knights.

TAKE COLORADO -1.5 (+133).

Over/Under

Respecting what looks to be a well-constructed number here: PASS.

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Red Wings (2-2-1) and Chicago Blackhawks (0-4-1) renew their Original Six rivalry Sunday at 7 p.m. ET at United Center. Below, we look at the Red Wings vs. Blackhawks odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Red Wings are coming off back-to-back losses and are playing the back half of two games in as many days. Early-season returns have been mostly positive. Detroit ranks 13th in the league in scoring-chance percentage (50.8%)

The ‘Hawks are reeling. They’ve played over 300 minutes of hockey so far, and they’ve yet to have a lead.

To make matters worse, the Blackhawks had a COVID-19 outbreak. F Patrick Kane will miss the Red Wings game because of the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol, while F Ryan Carpenter and D Erik Gustafsson were removed from COVID-19 protocol, the ‘Hawks announced Sunday morning.

Red Wings at Blackhawks projected goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic (0-1-1, 3.55 GAA, .890 SV%) vs. Kevin Lankinen (0-1-1, 2.91 GAA, .884 SV%)

Nedeljkovic has stopped 32 of the last 34 shots in his last two appearances. That includes stopping all six shots he faced in a relief performance at the Montreal Canadiens Saturday.

Lankinen draws a second start in a row with No. 1 Marc-Andre Fleury struggling at the outset of the season. The second-year netminder allowed 3 goals in Thursday’s 4-1 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

Red Wings at Blackhawks odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 3

Money line

Detroit outshot its opponents in both recent losses (Thursday, Saturday), and its expected-goals metrics thus far are impressive. Chicago was already dealing with blue-line injuries, and has been just out of whack all the way around. Chicago has had trouble creating quality looks from the slot.

BACK THE RED WINGS (+135).

Against the spread

PASS. Shoot for the plus payout on the money line.

Over/Under

Detroit’s early-season metrics make it an Over green light for now. Coming off one goal in its last two games helps the price here.

Both power plays have looked capable in the early going. In 5-on-5 play, both sides rank in the NHL’s bottom 10 in shooting percentage. More twine-finders are out there for both.

TAKE THE OVER 5.5 (-130).
