Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders Game 4 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Carolina Hurricanes take on the New York Islanders in Game 4 of their best-of-7 Eastern Conference 1st-round series Saturday. Carolina holds a commanding 3-0 series lead. Puck drop from UBS Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET (TBS). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

With a win Saturday afternoon, Carolina would become the 1st team this NHL postseason to advance to the 2nd round. Only 4 teams in NHL history have come back from down 3-0 in a playoff series, and it has not happened in 10 years (the LA Kings did it against the San Jose Sharks in the 1st round in 2014). The last time the Islanders accomplished the feat was against the Pittsburgh Penguins back in 1975 in the quarterfinals.

Carolina earned the 3-2 victory in Game 3 at UBS Arena as 39-year-old D Brent Burns, who was on that 2014 Sharks team that collapsed, scored the game’s opening goal. C Sebastian Aho, the team leader in goals during the regular season (36), recorded his 2nd goal of the series in the 3rd period.

Hurricanes at Islanders projected goalies

Frederik Anderson (13-2-0, 1.84 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO in regular season) vs. Semyon Varlamov (14-8-4, 2.60 GAA, .918 SV%, 3 SO in regular season)

Anderson has started and won all 3 games this series. The Isles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Game 2 on just 12 shots overall, but Carolina surged ahead in the 2nd and 3rd periods with 5 unanswered goals. The 34-year-old missed 50 games due to a blood-clotting issue during the regular season, and he surpassed Braden Holtby April 7 for most wins (294) by a goalie in 1st 500 games played.

Varlamov, who turns 36 Saturday, will get the start once again. Coach Patrick Roy turned to Ilya Sorokin briefly in Game 3, but he was pulled for Varlamov in the 2nd period after surrendering 3 goals on 14 shots. Varlamov, who was the goaltender and a Vezina finalist for Roy while they were together in Colorado in 2014, finished the contest, while Sorokin sadly stood in the tunnel and watched.

Hurricanes at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Islanders 2

Moneyline

PASS.

This is too much juice to lay on Carolina (-182) alone, especially since it’s Varlamov’s birthday and this veteran Islanders group is fighting for the chance to play together 1 more time.

Puck line/Against the spread

BACK ISLANDERS +1.5 (-182) IN A PARLAY.

It’s also too juicy to back the Islanders by themselves on the puck line. However, if you believe the TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING +1.5 (-250 vs. Florida Panthers, 5 p.m. ET) will keep it within a goal as I do, pairing these 2 teams down 3-0 on the PL will pay out +116.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 5.5 (-122).

No team had a lower expected goals against during the regular season than Carolina (2.19), and it also saw the fewest shots on goal against (1668). The Islanders blocked the most shots during the regular season (1380), and with their season on the line, expect guys like D Noah Dobson and D Alexander Romanov to sacrifice their bodies in front of Varlamov.

Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders Game 3 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders meet in Game 3 of a best-of-7 Eastern Conference 1st-round series Thursday in New York. The Hurricanes lead the series 2-0. Puck drop from UBS Arena is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Islanders looked great for half of Game 2 on Monday, and it was in good shape all the way until halfway into the 3rd period, up 3-1. That’s when the floodgates opened, and New York had a brutal collapse that might be difficult to forget.

Kyle Palmieri and Bo Horvat scored a pair of even-strength goals in the 1st period, and the latter was a killer at 19:45, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. PNC Arena was uncharacteristically quiet, sans for the smattering for New Yorkers holding tickets. Anders Lee scored a power-play goal at 3:54 of the 2nd period, and the Canes looked to be in trouble.

Teuvo Teravainen struck for a power-play goal 10 minutes later in the 2nd period on a selfless pass from Jake Guentzel in front of Semyon Varlamov‘s cage, and Carolina suddenly had life.

It remained 3-1 until 10:43 of the 3rd period when Seth Jarvis scored. He posted an assist on Sebastian Aho‘s goal at 17:45, as the Canes tied it, and then just 9 seconds later, it was a “Marty Party”, as Jordan Martinook scored at 17:54 to give Carolina a 4-3 lead. Guentzel added an empty-net goal, and what looked like a sure win for the Islanders, turned to dust, and an 0-2 series hole.

  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Hurricanes at Islanders projected goalies

Frederik Andersen (13-2-0, 1.84 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO in regular season) vs. Ilya Sorokin (25-19-12, 3.01 GAA, .909 SV%, 2 SO in regular season)

Andersen has allowed just 4 goals on 46 shots in this series, good for a 2-0-0 record, 2.02 GAA and .913 SV% in the 2 games. It’s been a tale of 2 games, too, as he kicked aside 33 of 34 shots in Game 1, while allowing 3 goals on just 12 shots for the entirety of Game 2. The Islanders have to take some positives from the fact they scored on 25% of their shots last time out.

Sorokin is confirmed to make his 1st start of the series, as coach Patrick Roy, who knows a thing or two about postseason goaltending, shifts from Semyon Varlamov. The 35-year-old Varlamov is 0-2-0 with a 3.03 GAA and .905 SV% in 2 games in this series.

Sorokin allowed 3 goals on 33 shots in a 4-1 home loss to the Hurricanes on March 19, but he made 36 saves in a 5-4 win in Raleigh on Dec. 23, and he made 42 saves in a wild 4-3 OTL against the Hurricanes on Nov. 4 at UBS Arena.

Hurricanes at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 3, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline

The ISLANDERS (+135) are back in front of the home fans for Game 3, and that could be enough to turn the tide in their favor.

New York looked good for most of Game 2, holding a 3-1 leading into the midway portion of the 3rd period before folding like a tent. If it can maintain focus, and Sorokin and the home crowd can give them a bump, New York can still make this a series.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Islanders +1.5 (-190) are too expensive on the puck line, costing you nearly 2 times your potential return. If you need a little insurance, and just can’t pick New York straight up, it isn’t worth it.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-115) is worth a play in Game 3.

We had a lower-scoring Game 1, with just 4 goals on the board. Game 2 was shaping up as an Under result, too, before the floodgates opened and we had 4 goals from Carolina in the 3rd period to flip things to the Over.

The total has gone low in 2 of the past 3 skates at UBS Arena between these teams, including the only regular-season meeting on March 19 on Long Island. The most recent playoff meeting at UBS Arena, Game 6 of the 1st round last season, also cashed Under.

New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes Game 2 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes meet in Game 2 of a best-of-7 Eastern Conference 1st-round series Monday. The Hurricanes lead the series 1-0. Puck drop from PNC Arena is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Islanders vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Hurricanes whipped the PNC Arena crowd into a frenzy in Game 1, as Evgeny Kuznetsov scored a power-play goal just 95 seconds into the contest. Kyle MacLean evened things up at 8:20 of the 1st period, however, and that’s how things stayed until the 3rd period. Stefan Noesen scored an even-strength goal at 3:44 of the final period, while Martin Necas hit an empty-net goal to put a bow on the scoring.

The road team won all 4 regular-season meetings, including 2 games decided in overtime. However, Carolina had other ideas in the series opener. The Hurricanes have won 12 of the past 16 playoff games at home.

Carolina has cashed the Under at an 8-0-1 pace in the past 9 home games, while New York has hit the Under at a 5-1-1 clip in the past 7 outings on the road.

  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Islanders at Hurricanes projected goalies

Semyon Varlamov (14-8-4, 2.60 GAA, .918 SV%, 3 SO in regular season) vs. Frederik Andersen (13-2-0, 1.84 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO in regular season)

Varlamov made the surprise start in Game 1, although it really isn’t that stunning considering the fact he finished the regular season on a high note with 5 consecutive victories and just 8 goals allowed in April. However, Varlamov did allow 2 goals on 25 shots.

Andersen kicked aside 33 of the 34 shots he faced in a 3-1 win against the Islanders, carrying over his late-season momentum. Since returning from a blood-clotting issue March 7, Andersen has allowed just 14 goals in 10 regular-season starts and the Game 1 victory.

Islanders at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Islanders 2

Moneyline

The Hurricanes (-250) will set you back 2½ times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for not enough return.

While the Islanders (+200) didn’t necessarily play poorly in Game 1, they struggled offensively and cannot be trusted until they return to home ice.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The ISLANDERS +1.5 (-130) are worth a look on the puck line, as we should get another lower-scoring defensive battle in Game 2 in Raleigh.

New York is going to have a hard time beating Andersen, who has been red hot for a lengthy period of time. However, it should be able to keep it close, and we could get our 1st overtime of this series.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-120) is a strong play in Game 2. We had a total of just 4 goals in the series opener, and one of those goals was of the empty-net variety.

The Canes have hit at an 8-0-1 clip in the past 9 home outings, including the series opener, while the Isles had cashed at a 5-1-1 pace in the past 7 road contests.

New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes Game 1 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes meet in Game 1 of a best-of-7 Eastern Conference 1st-round series Saturday. Puck drop from Scotiabank Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET (TBS). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Islanders vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Tied 2-2

These teams met 4 times in the regular season, with the road team winning all 4 games, including 3 one-goal games, and 2 decided in overtime. The Over cashed at a 3-1 clip. Carolina won 4-1 in the most recent game on The Island on March 19, hitting the Under (6) for the only time against New York this season.

These teams met in the 1st round last season, too, with Carolina coming away victorious in 6 games. Carolina won Game 1 by a 2-1 score as the Under (5.5) cashed, as then-goalie Antti Raanta outdueled Ilya Sorokin. In that series, 4 of the 6 games were decided by a single goal too, with 2 of the games being decided in overtime.

The Islanders streak into the postseason, as they went 8-0-1 in the final 9 games of the regular season, while cashing the Under in 3 of the past 4 outings.

The Hurricanes lost 6-3 in Columbus in a meaningless game on Tuesday, halting a 5-game win streak. The Canes ended up with 111 points, which was 2nd-best in the Metropolitan Division to the New York Rangers (114 points), and 3rd-best in the NHL.

Islanders at Hurricanes projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (25-19-12, 3.01 GAA, .909 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (13-2-0, 1.84 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO)

Sorokin didn’t have a great season overall, but he finished up strong in April. He has posted a 3-0-1 mark in the past 4 outings, allowing 2 or fewer goals in 3 of those starts. He has also turned aside 81 of the 87 shots he has faced in just the past 2 outings.

Sorokin was on the short end of a 4-1 loss against the Hurricanes at UBS Arena on March 19, allowing 3 goals on 33 shots in the loss. He won at Carolina on Dec. 23, giving up 4 goals on 40 shots in a wild 5-4 victory, and he allowed 4 goals on 46 shots in a 4-3 OTL on Nov. 4 on home ice.

When healthy, Andersen has been rock-solid this season for the Hurricanes. You just never know when the shoe is going to drop, and he’ll be sidelined.

Andersen has allowed just 13 goals in 10 starts since returning from a 4-month injury, absolutely playing out of his mind, posting 3 shutouts in the past 8 starts. He didn’t face the Islanders this season.

Islanders at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Islanders 2

Moneyline

The Hurricanes (-225) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for not enough reward, especially in a Game 1. In addition, the fact the road team won all 4 matchups this season should serve as a bit of a cautionary tale. Be careful in this series, as it could be wild.

PASS, and look to the puck line instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

The ISLANDERS +1.5 (-145) aren’t priced out of line in this series opener. Remember, New York won both regular-season meetings in Raleigh. While they’re facing a red-hot Andersen for the first time, New York has been pretty red-hot itself across the past 10 outings, grabbing 19 out of a possible 20 points to get into this position. This should be a close game throughout.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-120) should be the rule, not only in Game 1, but for the entire series.

Again, The Great Dane, Andersen, has allowed just 13 goals in the past 10 starts since returning from injury on March 7. That’s simply amazing, and it’s no surprise the Under is 5-1 in his past 6 starts.

While Sorokin was shaky for stretches of the season, he buttoned things up considerably in April, just in time for the playoffs. The Isles enter the postseason on a 8-3-1 run to the Under in the past 12 games, and the total has gone low at a 3-1-1 clip in the past 5 starts by Sorokin.

Carolina Hurricanes at Columbus Blue Jackets odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Carolina Hurricanes at Columbus Blue Jackets odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Carolina Hurricanes (52-22-7) and Columbus Blue Jackets (26-43-12) meet Tuesday at Nationwide Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes vs. Blue Jackets odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Hurricanes lead 3-0

The Hurricanes sit with 111 points, tied for the 2nd-most points in the NHL. However, Carolina will fall short of the Metropolitan Division title, as the New York Rangers secured that and the President’s Trophy with a win Monday night. The Canes are locked into the No. 2 seed in the Metropolitan Division, and they’ll face the New York Islanders in the 1st round of the playoffs.

The Blue Jackets had a dismal season, producing just a conference-low 64 points, which is 11 worse than the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference. It was the 4th-lowest point total in the NHL, too.

Columbus has dropped 4 in a row, including shutout losses at Carolina April 7 and at Florida April 11.

  • Over/Under (O/U): 6 (O: -105 | U: -115)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Hurricanes at Blue Jackets projected goalies

Spencer Martin (7-8-2, 3.14 GAA, .896 SV%) vs. Jet Greaves (2-6-0, 3.55 GAA, .906 SV%)

Martin, the former Blue Jackets backstop, is expected to get the nod for the Hurricanes now that the division title is off the table and Carolina is locked into the 2nd spot in the Metro, as there is no sense risking Frederik Andersen or Pyotr Kochetkov in what is essentially a meaningless game.

Greaves was pounded for 6 runs on 37 shots in a 6-4 loss in Nashville last time out Saturday. He is getting a long look down the stretch, and lately he hasn’t fared tremendously well. Greaves has lost 3 straight starts, allowing 4 or more goals in those outings.

Hurricanes at Blue Jackets picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Blue Jackets 3

Moneyline

The Hurricanes (-160) will be a lot less motivated to get the job done Tuesday, with a division title no longer on the table. However, Carolina should still be able to generate plenty of offense against the very giving Greaves of the Blue Jackets (+135)

PASS, and look to the puck line instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

The BLUE JACKETS +1.5 (-185) are worth backing lightly if you’d like a little insurance at Nationwide Arena, rather than backing the moderate favorites straight up. Columbus is not a good team, but the Hurricanes -1.5 (+150) might have a little less wind in their sails after losing out on the division title while likely using a 3rd-string tendy.

Over/Under

OVER 6 (-105) might be the best play here, as we have a 3rd-string goaltender going for the visitors, while the home side uses Greaves, who has been peppered for 14 goals across the past 3 starts, all losses.

Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Washington Capitals (36-29-10) and Carolina Hurricanes (47-22-7) meet Friday at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Capitals vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Capitals lead 2-1, including a wild 7-6 shootout win in D.C. on March 22 in the most recent meeting

The Capitals played Thursday night at home against the Pittsburgh  Penguins, falling 4-1 as the Under (5.5) connected. In its most recent game playing on no rest, Washington won 2-1 in Seattle  behind a strong effort from goaltender Charlie Lindgren. However, the Caps are 1-4-2 in the past 7 games on no rest dating back to Jan. 3, while the Under holds a slight 4-3 advantage in those games.

The Hurricanes hosted the Boston Bruins Thursday night at PNC Arena, with the visitors skating away with a 4-1 win. Carolina last played in Washington on no rest in that wild 7-6 SOL on March 22, failing to cover as a huge road favorite (-190). However, Carolina is 5-1-2 in the past 8 games in the 2nd end of a back-to-back, with the Over-Under splitting 4-4 in those outings.

When the Canes played their only back-to-back with consecutive home games, they topped the Seattle Kraken 3-2 in OT on Oct. 26, before polishing off the San Jose Sharks 3-0 on Oct. 27. The Under cashed in each of those games.

Capitals at Hurricanes projected goalies

Darcy Kuemper (13-13-3, 3.32 GAA, .888 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Pyotr Kochetkov (20-13-4, 2.38 GAA, .911 SV%, 4 SO)

Kuemper came on in a relief role Tuesday, turning aside all 4 shots he faced in 14:19 of ice time against the Buffalo Sabres. In his most recent start, he faced Carolina, allowing 4 goals on 22 shots in a start, but he was pulled after 2 periods. He had a disastrous March, going 0-1-0 with a 6.62 GAA and .814 SV% in 2 outings.

Kochetkov kicked aside all 26 shots he faced in Montreal last time out on Saturday, earning his 4th shutout of the season. It wasn’t as rosy in D.C. in the most recent meeting with the Caps, though, as he was beaten for 6 goals on just 25 shots in the wild 7-6 SOL.

Capitals at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 5, Capitals 2

Moneyline

The Hurricanes (-275) will cost you more than 2 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk and not enough reward.

Carolina lost to Washington last time these teams met in a wild affair, and that should serve as a cautionary tale why you should never bet heavy favorites.

PASS, and look to the puck line instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

The HURRICANES -1.5 (+105) are a much better value on the puck line. While, yes, they lost to the Capitals +1.5 (-125) in the most recent meeting, Kochetkov has still been pretty hot lately, and Carolina, as a whole, has played well.

The Hurricanes will be especially feisty, and looking to get untracked, after suffering a setback to Boston on home ice Thursday in front of a packed house with a playoff atmosphere, at least at the start of the evening.

Over/Under

OVER 6 (-105) is a decent play in this game, as both defenses could be a little sluggish after having played the night before. Plus, the Over has cashed in each of the past 2 meetings, with the winning side notching at least 6 goals all on their own.

While the Under has cashed in 4 in a row for the Bruins, and the Under is 5-0 in the past 5 outings for the Hurricanes, look to the Over, especially with a shaky Kuemper in the crease for the visitors.

The Boston Bruins (44-17-15) and Carolina Hurricanes (47-21-7) meet Thursday at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Bruins vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Carolina leads 1-0 with 3-2 road win on Jan. 24

The Bruins are coming off a 3-0 road win against the Nashville Predators last time out on Tuesday, and they have won 3 of the past 4 away from home. The Bruins have scored just 7 goals in the past 3 games, good for 2.33 goals per game (GPG), while allowing just 5 goals, or (1.67 GPG). It’s no surprise the Under is 3-0 in the past 3 outings, and 4-1 in the past 5 contests.

The Hurricanes have recorded back-to-back shutouts against the Montreal Canadiens (3-0) on the road on Saturday, as well as the Detroit Red Wings (4-0) at home last Thursday. Bruins at Hurricanes projected goalies

Jeremy Swayman (24-8-8, 2.56 GAA, .916 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (11-1-0, 1.88 GAA, .930 SV%, 2 SO)

Swayman allowed just 2 goals on 20 shots in a 3-2 shootout win in Washington Saturday, and he has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 3 straight starts, and he wrapped up March going 5-2-0 with a 2.70 GAA and .896 SV% in 7 starts.

Andersen kicked aside all 24 shots he faced against the Red Wings in a shutout Thursday, and he posted a blistering 7-0-0 with a 1.15 GAA with a .957 SV% and 2 SO in 7 starts in March after returning from a 3-month injury.

Bruins at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 3, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline

The BRUINS (+125) skate into Raleigh looking for a win in this potential playoff series preview against the Hurricanes (-150). This one is certain to have a playoff atmosphere in a game between 2 marquee Eastern Conference teams.

Both teams have been getting timely goals, good defense and tremendous goaltending, which is a hallmark of a great team. This will be a good game, with the road team winning for the 3rd straight time in the series.

The teams meet again on Tuesday in Boston.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Bruins +1.5 (-200) will cost you 2 times your potential return, which is too much risk for not enough reward. If you like Boston, just bet it straight up.

AVOID.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-105) is a low number for this day and age of fire-wagon hockey, but these teams are a bit of a throwback.

Boston is coming off a shutout in the Music City, with the Under cashing in each of the past 3 outings, combining for a 12 total goals with the opposition in that stretch. Carolina has cashed the Under in 4 in a row, and 6 of the past 7 contests.

Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Detroit Red Wings (36-29-7) take on the Carolina Hurricanes (45-21-7) Thursday at PNC Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes at Red Wings odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Wings have been grounded of late, going 3-6-1 in their last 10. They dropped Tuesday’s tilt 4-3 in overtime to the Washington Capitals. That loss dropped the Wings 2 points behind the Caps for the final Wild Card spot. C Dylan Larkin is getting reacclimated after missing 3 weeks due to injury. He has 2 goals and an assist in 3 games since returning.

The Canes have slipped up, losing 2 of the last 3, with the latest a 4-1 setback against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Carolina was -190 favorites in that loss. They took 39 shots on goal, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. The Canes are solid in 2nd in the Metropolitan Division just 3 points behind the New York Rangers for the top spot.

  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Red Wings +1.5 (-115) | Hurricanes -1.5 (-105)

Red Wings at Hurricanes projected goalies

James Reimer (9-7-2, 2.98 GAA, .907 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (10-1-0, 2.05 GAA, .925 SV%, 1 SO)

Reimer has won 3 straight starts with his latest last Thursday over the New York Islanders. He stopped 33 of 36 shots fired his way in the 6-3 win. He’s 3-1-0 with a 3.18 GAA and .907 SV% this month.

Andersen has been dominant since his return from a 4-month injury. His last start was in the 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday, when he stopped 32 of 33 shots fired upon him. Andersen is 6-0-0 this month and has allowed just 8 goals in 6 games.

Red Wings at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

The Canes are heavy favorites, but they’re far too expensive to consider. It’s even more outlandish when you consider that Detroit needs this game more to stay in contention. Carolina is great at home at 24-9-4, and the Wings are just 15-18-2 on the road.

I like SEBASTIAN AHO OVER 2.5 SHOTS (-160) here. He has 3+ SOG in 3 of 4 and has done so in both games against Detroit this year.

Puck line/Against the spread

I like Detroit’s side here, and I thought it would be a little more expensive. As mentioned, they need this game more as we head to the finish line. The Canes have dropped 2 of 3 and could be a little complacent.

Take RED WINGS +1.5 (-115).

Over/Under

I like the Under here, but I’d be more comfortable if it were 6.5. Both goalies have been solid. The Canes are 4-6 O/U in their last 10 while the Wings are 6-4. The Under cashed in the last 6 meetings between the teams, but the last game ended in a 4-2 final, which would push here.

LEAN UNDER 6 (-120).

Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Carolina Hurricanes (44-20-6) take on the Washington Capitals (33-26-9) Friday at Capital One Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes vs. Capitals odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Carolina is on the back end of a back-to-back after gutting out a 3-2 OT win against the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night. C Seth Jarvis sent the crowd home happy with a goal nearly 90 seconds into the extra frame. Jarvis is on a heater with goals in 5 straight and 6 of 7. LW Teuvo Teravainen has missed action with an upper body ailment, so the added offense has been needed.

The Caps are still hanging around, 3 points out of a Wild Card spot. They’re coming off a 7-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday. The setback snapped a 3-game winning streak. LW Alex Ovechkin netted 2 goals against Toronto and has 5 goals in his last 3 games to give him 23 on the season.

  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Hurricanes -1.5 (+125) | Capitals +1.5 (-155)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Hurricanes at Capitals projected goalies

Pyotr Kochetkov (19-12-3, 2.36 GAA, .913 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Darcy Kuemper (13-13-3, 3.29 GAA, .890 SV%, 1 SO)

Kochetkov was great in a 4-1 win over the New York Islanders Tuesday. He stopped 30 of 31 shots fired his way. He’s 3-2-0 with a 2.43 GAA and .921 SV% in 5 starts this month. He allowed 4 goals in 2 of those games and combined to allow 4 in the other 3 combined.

Kuemper was bodied for 7 goals on 37 shots in a 7-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday. He has allowed 3+ goals in 5 straight starts, which is the primary reason he has been relegated to backup duty. He was victorious in a 2-1 shootout finish Dec. 17 against Carolina and stopped 28 of 29.

Hurricanes at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Capitals 2

Moneyline

The Canes have won 5 straight and 8 of 9, but they’re on a back-to-back, and there’s no way I’d consider their -200 ML.

Instead, I’m going to take a chance here. Ovechkin has 5 goals in 3 games, and 3 of those came on the power play over the last 2. ALEX OVECHKIN OVER 0.5 POWER-PLAY POINTS (+250) gives you the insurance of an assist in case he doesn’t net one. The Canes are 12th in PIMs in the league, and it’s worth the shot for 2½ times your wager.

Puck line/Against the spread

I usually shy away from the puck line, because at this point of the season, the odds are so juiced that you incur more risk than reward. The Canes have won 8 of 10, and 6 of those were by multiple goals. They’ve had 2 back-to-back scenarios in this window, and they answered on the back end with 7-2 wins each time.

Take the HURRICANES -1.5 (+125).

Over/Under

We’re projecting a push here, so I’m going to another profitable prop.

As mentioned, Jarvis has goals in 5 straight games and 6 during the stretch. So, he’s feeling it. Now, he scored on his only SOG Thursday, but he has 3+ shots in 3 of his last 5 games. Take SETH JARVIS OVER 2.5 SHOTS (+130) or his anytime goal prop is at +210.

New York Rangers at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s New York Rangers at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Rangers (42-18-4) take on the Carolina Hurricanes (39-19-6) Tuesday at PNC Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Rangers vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Rangers defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-1 Monday night. C Mika Zibanejad scored his 20th goal in the game, which gave him 7 straight seasons of 20+ lamp illuminations. The Rangers are 7-2-1 over their last 10 and are 4 points ahead of Carolina atop the Metropolitan Division.

The Canes are roaring after a 7-2 dousing of the Calgary Flames Sunday. C Sebastian Aho (25th) and LW Teuvo Teravainen (21st) each had goals to go with 2 assists in the game. Teravainen has 4 goals in his last 5 games and is now just 2 away from his career high of 23. The Canes have won 3 in a row and are also 7-2-1 over their last 10.

Rangers at Hurricanes projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (27-13-2, 2.60 GAA, .912 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Pyotr Kochetkov (17-11-3, 2.39 GAA, .910 SV%, 3 SO)

Shesterkin stopped all 26 shots in a shutout over the St. Louis Blues Saturday. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 goals in a game since the Stadium Series game Feb. 18, spanning 7 starts. He had 1 good start and 1 clunker against Carolina this year. He stopped 26 of 27 in a 2-1 win Nov. 2 and allowed 6 goals on 27 shots in a 6-1 defeat Jan. 2.

Kochetkov stopped 23 of 25 shots in a 4-2 win over New Jersey Saturday. He allowed 4 goals to Winnipeg in his start before that, but he hasn’t allowed 3+ goals in a game in 14 of 15 starts. He was between the pipes Jan. 2 in the 6-1 victory over the Rangers, stopping 28 of 29.

Rangers at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 2, Hurricanes 1

Moneyline

These are 2 evenly matched teams. This really should be more of a pick ’em, but the Rangers are playing on consecutive nights. Carolina is 21-8-4 at home, and the Rangers are good on the road at 19-10-4. Each team is 7-2-1 in the last 10, and they’re both receiving great goaltending. They’ve met twice this season, both in New York, and each team came away victorious.

The Rangers have actually won 3 straight in this building and are 7-3 over the last 10 meetings against Carolina. I’ll take the value here and roll with the RANGERS +140.

Puck line/Against the spread

The puck line is too expensive for the Rangers, which means we look to the props lineup.

RW Andrei Svechnikov has goals in 3 straight games, and he netted 2 against the Rangers in the last meeting. I’m pegging this one to be a low-scoring affair that may require overtime, but if you have a free bet, his anytime goal price is nice at +195.

Take ANDREI SVECHNIKOV OVER 2.5 SHOTS (-150). He’s feeling it and has landed 3 shots on goal in 5 of 7.

Over/Under

Both teams are 3-7 O/U over the last 10, and the last 3 meetings between the squads went Under this total. This figures to be a grind-it-out game. Both teams possess great power plays and penalty kills. So I expect a lot of 5-on-5 in this one.

Take the UNDER 6 (-120).
