Le’Veon Bell’s hamstrings are not alright: Jets RB doubtful to return vs. Bills

Le’Veon Bell is doubtful to return to Sunday’s game against the Bills with a hamstring injury.

The soft tissue injuries continue to hurt the Jets. This time it’s their best running back.

Le’Veon Bell left Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills with a hamstring injury. He is doubtful to return.

The injury appeared to happen late in the first half when Bell went out for a pass and slipped. He came back out for the second half, only to leave early.

Bell had six rushing attempts for 14 yards to go along with 32 receiving yards before exiting. Frank Gore will take Bell’s spot as the No. 1 running back with Josh Adams serving as his backup.

The Jets had three healthy running backs heading into Sunday’s game. La’Mical Perine was ruled out before the game due to an ankle injury.

Jets LB Blake Cashman doubtful to return vs. Bills

Blake Cashman is doubtful to return to Sunday’s game against the Bills with a groin injury.

And then there were two healthy inside linebackers.

Jets sophomore Blake Cashman went down early in the first quarter in the team’s opener against the Buffalo Bills. The Jets listed Cashman as doubtful to return with a groin injury.

Harvey Langi will take Cashman’s spot at inside linebacker alongside fellow starter Neville Hewitt.

The Jets came into Sunday’s game with only three healthy inside linebackers. Avery Williamson was held out of Sunday’s contest with a hamstring injury that he suffered in practice this past week.

Meanwhile, Patrick Onwuasor is out for at least a month after he suffered a knee injury. C.J. Mosley opted out of the 2020 season because of COVID-19 concerns.

Adam Gase refuses to name Jets’ backup QB vs. Bills

The Jets head coach would not commit to a No. 2 quarterback for the Jets season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Adam Gase is keeping the Jets’ depth chart close to his vest before his team’s season opener.

On Friday, when ESPN’s Rich Cimini asked Gase who his No. 2 quarterback will be on Sunday against the Bills, the coach gave a non-answer before exchanging some banter with Cimini. “It’s a 50-50 shot,” Gase said.

Cimini was looking for a more definitive answer, but Gase didn’t relent, saying “it could be Mike White, it could be Joe Flacco” as an alternative to David Fales. While Gase was clearly being coy, Flacco will not be the Jets’ backup quarterback on Sunday, as the team ruled him out with a neck injury.

That leaves White and Fales, who are both on New York’s practice squad. The Jets aren’t quite ready to give rookie quarterback James Morgan the reigns of the No. 2 spot on the depth chart just yet.

Gase went on to ask, “Should I just fax our gameplan to Buffalo?”

Cimini offered a retort, asking Gase, “Do you think [Bills head coach] Sean McDermott is on the edge of his seat” waiting to find out who the Jets’ backup to Sam Darnold will be?

Ironically enough, earlier this week, McDermott wouldn’t give any indication as to who will start on the right side of Buffalo’s offensive line this weekend.

As Cimini pointed out during his back and forth with Gase, the Jets head coach learned the importance of a backup quarterback in 2019. New York was forced to play Luke Falk between Darnold’s bout with mono and Trevor Siemian’s gruesome ankle injury.

The hope is that Darnold requires no such relief this season.

James Burgess is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game vs. Bills

James Burgess led the way for the Jets in a 13-6 win over the Bills in the season finale on Sunday.

James Burgess led the way for the Jets in a 13-6 win over the Bills in the season finale on Sunday.

Burgess finished the game with nine total tackles, one pass breakup and an interception. For his performance, he is Jets Wire’s player of the game for Week 17 of the regular season.

The inside linebacker arguably had his best game of the season. He did a little of everything, including coming up with his first career interception. On that play, Burgess completely duped Matt Barkley into making a bad throw. He dropped back in zone coverage and came flying over to make the pick.

For Burgess, he has really progressed since having to step in for the injured Jets linebackers. His tackling has drastically improved and he has the ability to play in coverage. In 10 games, Burgess had 51 total tackles, 0.5 sacks, a safety, five pass defenses and an interception.

The 25-year-old linebacker is a restricted free agent this offseason. If the Jets were smart, they’d tender him a contract. With C.J. Mosley back next season along with Avery Williamson, Neville Hewitt and Blake Cashman, Burgess makes for a good depth piece.

He’s not a good enough player for 16 games, but in case a linebacker goes down next season he can come in and hold down the position for a few games.

James Burgess, Jordan Jenkins among Studs and Duds in win Jets’ win over Bills

James Burgess and Jordan Jenkins are studs in the Jets’ win over the Bills.

It certainly wasn’t a pretty performance for the Jets, but they somehow managed to finish the season with a 7-9 record with a 13-6 win over the Bills on Sunday.

The Jets’ defense dominated this game with the Bills’ backups team in for the majority of the game. Gregg Williams’ unit forced two total turnovers and kept Buffalo out of the end zone.

The same can’t be said for Adam Gase’s offense. His unit struggled mightily against the Bills backup defense. Sam Darnold was far from strong as he made a few boneheaded decisions, one of which that led to an interception. However, Gase’s in-game decisions were a problem as there were multiple times in this game where he left you shaking your head.

With that being said, let’s take a look at the studs and duds from the Jets’ season-ending victory.

Stud: James Burgess

James Burgess didn’t look like an NFL linebacker when he stepped in for the Jets earlier this year, but he turned his season around in the second half.

Burgess recorded his first career interception off of Bills quarterback Matt Barkley. Burgess did a nice job of reading Barkley’s eyes and stepped in front of the intended receiver. He finished the game with nine tackles, one pass breakup and the interception.

The 25-year-old is a restricted free agent in the offseason and the Jets should bring him back. He’s a solid depth piece in case any of the starting linebacker get hurt next season.

Jets vs. Bills inactives: Demaryius Thomas only notable player out for New York against Buffalo

The Jets will be without Demaryius Thomas for the third straight game against the Bills.

The Jets will be as healthy as they’ve ever been in their final game against the Bills.

New York will only be without a couple of starters in Demaryius Thomas and Tom Compton. The rest of the Jets inactives are all backup players. That includes Blake Countess, Ross Travis, Jordan Willis, Kenneth Dixon, Josh Adams and Bennett Jackson.

With Thomas down once again, Vyncint Smith will likely fill his spot at wide receiver. He has done a solid job filling in as he’s had at least one catch in his last five games.

Brent Qvale will slide into Compton’s position at guard. He has missed the majority of the season with a knee injury that he suffered in training camp. This will be his first start of the season.

As for the Bills, they are resting the majority of their key starters.  The Bills’ top wide receivers John Brown and Cole Beasley are inactive. Meanwhile, their returner Andre Roberts is also out. Devin Singletary, Tre’Davious White, Dawson Knox and Shaq Lawson are also among those inactive for Buffalo.

Prediction

Bills 17, Jets 13

Moneyline (?)

The BILLS (-125) are the better team overall and should be the pick regardless of who starts and sits this week. Matt Barkley could draw the start in place of Allen, but the Bills are still deep enough at the other skill positions and have one of the NFL’s top defensive units. They’re a good pick at the early-week odds, and will be worth doubling down if they shift to slight home dogs with the potential inactive ruling for Allen.

The Bills are 4-3 at home while the Jets are just 1-6 on the road.

Against the Spread (?)

The better number for the BILLS (-1.5, -110) comes on the spread where they’ll need to win by 2 or more points for a bet to cash. Buffalo is a league-best 9-4-2 against the spread overall and covers the line by 3.6 points per game. New York has covered the spread in just six of 15 games and falls an average of 0.8 PPG below the cover line.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Bills to win by at least 2 points and cover the spread returns a profit of $9.09 while the same wager for the outright win on the moneyline returns a profit of $8.

Over/Under (?)

Take the UNDER 36.5 (-110). The projected total is the lowest of the week. The Bills are 4-11 against the Over/Under and fall an average of 4.1 points below the line. The Jets are 7-8 and come up 1.4 PPG shy of the projections. The Bills haven’t scored 20 points in any of their last three games.
