Jets sign Tanzel Smart to active roster, elevate two from practice squad for Week 11

Jets sign Tanzel Smart to active roster, elevate two from practice squad for Week 11

The Jets announced a few roster moves ahead of their Week 11 matchup with the Buffalo Bills, including bringing back a defensive lineman and calling up two from the practice squad.

The Jets signed defensive tackle Tanzel Smart to the 53-man roster, not long after the team waived Smart and brought him back on the practice squad. Smart has seen time in two games this season with one tackle.

The two players elevated from the practice squad this week are offensive lineman Jake Hanson and linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball.

Hanson joined the Jets’ practice squad on November 6. He played in 11 games — including one start — with the Green Bay Packers over the past two seasons. Hanson was drafted in the sixth round by the Packers in 2020. He’ll add extra depth on the interior for the Jets Sunday.

McCrary-Ball has been on the Jets’ practice squad since the end of August when the team began building their practice squad for the season after their initial 53-man roster was set. He spent the 2022 season and the 2023 offseason with the San Francisco 49ers. The former Indiana Hoosier signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2022. With Chazz Surratt and Sam Eguavoen both out for Sunday, McCrary-Ball will be the fifth linebacker and help on special teams.

The Jets enter Week 11 with a 4-5 record and perhaps entering a bit of desperation mode. The good news is they are right in the thick of the playoff mix, just one game out of the final playoff spot in the AFC. Sunday provides a chance for the Jets to secure what would be a very important divisional tiebreaker as a win over the Buffalo Bills would give the Jets the season sweep and move them ahead of the 5-5 Bills. Here’s your game and viewing information on what is an extremely important game for New York.

Garrett Wilson questionable for Sunday, Robert Saleh optimistic

Garrett Wilson questionable for Sunday, Robert Saleh optimistic

Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson will be listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills with an elbow injury.

Wilson popped up on the injury report this week with that elbow injury and has been limited in practice all week. Head coach Robert Saleh said “we’ll see” when asked about his availability for Sunday.

Saleh added: “There’s a couple of hurdles he has to clear.” On a positive note, Saleh did say he is optimistic about Wilson playing in Sunday and that “everything is positive.”

Wilson said his elbow was bothering him on his pass attempt Sunday against the Raiders. He did say he plans to play this week against the Bills.

Wilson currently has 55 catches for 642 yards and two touchdowns. However, both came in the first two weeks of the season, one of them coming against the Jets’ Week 11 opponent, Buffalo, back in Week 1.

The Jets need all the help they can get. They enter this week at 4-5, one game out of a playoff spot. That spot is being held by the Jets’ Week 14 opponent, the Houston Texans.

New York is also looking for the season sweep of the Bills. Doing so would be the first time since the 2016 season.

The 2023 NFL season kicks off Thursday with the 1st of 16 games for the opening week. It will begin a year of surprises and upsets each week.

In 2022, underdogs won 34.3% of the games outright but were not a profitable bet overall as the underdogs on moneyline bets had a net -8.8% ROI (return on investment). However, spread bets on the underdog last season had an ROI of +6.4%.

LIONS +4.5 (-110) at Chiefs — Thursday, 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC)

The Lions were involved in 8 games in the regular season a year ago that were decided by 4 or fewer points.

They are the favorite in the NFC North this season and face a Chiefs team, who despite being at home as the defending Super Bowl champions, will be without All-Pro DL Chris Jones, who is holding out in a contract dispute.

TE Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ best pass catcher, is questionable with a bone bruise in his knee. While he probably plays, he won’t be 100%. I’m not quite confident enough in the +180 moneyline bet on the Lions, but they should at least keep this close down to the wire.

CARDINALS +7 (-110) at Commanders — Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (FOX)

While the Cardinals are expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL, the Commanders are projected to have the worst-scoring offense in the league.

The Cardinals starting defense, albeit in a handful of series in the preseason, did not allow any points. Their offense, with QB Josh Dobbs under center to start the year in place of an injured QB Kyler Murray, will likely be anemic but focused on ball control and running the football.

It will only be the 2nd NFL start for Commanders QB Sam Howell. Plus, they could be without WR Terry McLaurin, their best offensive player who has turf toe and is day to day, and DE Chase Young, their best pass rusher who has a neck injury.

This game has all the makings of a 17-13 or 16-10 stinker all over it.

Bills at JETS (+115) — Monday, 8:20 p.m. ET (ESPN)

The Jets open at home with QB Aaron Rodgers making his debut for Gang Green. In his many years with the Green Bay Packers, he was known for some Week 1 stinkers (23-7 loss to Minnesota Vikings in 2022, 38-3 loss to New Orleans Saints in 2021), but those were always on the road.

New York has an upgraded offense with Rodgers and RB Dalvin Cook and had the No. 4 scoring defense in the league. They beat the Bills at home last season.

Both 2023 Monday night appearances for Jets to have ManningCast

Will you be watching the Mannings or Buck and Aikman?

The Jets will appear on ESPN’s Monday Night Football twice this season — Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills and Week 9 against the Los Angeles Chargers. We’ve known that for months now. What we just found out this week is that both of those games will also have the alternate ManningCast option for fans.

“Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli” is returning for a third season and they unveiled their schedule for 2023 this week with a promo video that included “auditions” for a third host that included many NFL players and coaches such as Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Jets’ new best friend in Broncos head coach Sean Payton along with other well-known personalities including DJ Khaled, actress Reese Witherspoon and LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne.

Former quarterback Tom Brady also made a cameo appearance at the end in a waiting room when the Mannings couldn’t find anyone “perfect” for the job.

At the end, the schedule of games for the Mannings was revealed and both Jets’ games made the list. So now Jets fans will have the option of the Mannings or Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.

Week 13 of the NFL season was not kind to the underdog. Only 1 team, the Cincinnati Bengals, won a game outright as the underdog. A total of 6 underdogs covered the spread in Week 13.

Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s NFL odds and lines, and tab the best NFL Week 14 underdog bets to cash in on among SportbookWire’s NFL expert picks and predictions.

As for my picks last week, they went 1-2. The Detroit Lions covered the half-point spread, but the Tennessee Titans did not and the Miami Dolphins did not win their game.

That brings my running total for the season to 18-21.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS +3.5 (-116) San Francisco 49ers – 4:25 p.m. (FOX)

The 49ers have the league’s No. 1 defense going against the league’s No. 26 scoring offense, as the Bucs average only 18.1 points per game.

The 49ers allow the fewest points (15.8) and the fewest yards (283.9) per game but they will now have Brock Purdy starting at quarterback in place of Jimmy Garoppolo.

The 49ers are 9-29 with anyone other than Garoppolo starting since Kyler Shanahan became head coach.

NEW YORK JETS +10 (-109) at Buffalo Bills – 1  p.m. (CBS)

The Jets have not lost by double digits since Week 3. They even beat the Bills outright in Week 9.

The Bills have 5 wins this season by at least 10 points, but only 1 in the last 5 weeks (last week at New England).

The Jets have scored no fewer than 22 points with Mike White at QB the last 2 weeks. The Bills haven’t scored more than 31 since their bye week.

New England Patriots at ARIZONA CARDINALS +2.5 (-112) – Monday 8:15 p.m. (ESPN)

The Patriots have not won a game when their opponent has scored 20 points or more. They have allowed 8.7 points per game in their wins and 29.0 points per game in their losses.

The Cardinals’ offense looked good in their Week 12 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. If that carries over, they should be able to hit that 20-point mark.

In 4 of the Pats’ losses, they have allowed more than 130 rushing yards. Cardinals RB James Conner had 125 himself in the Cardinals’ loss to the Chargers.

The Cardinals are 3-1 when they rush for at least 130 yards as a team.

Jets injury report: Kyle Phillips out for the year, Breshad Perriman evaluated for concussion

The Jets lost one of their defensive ends in Sunday’s 18-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

https://embed.sendtonews.com/oembed/?SC=fU92e9cDXn-1014420-7498&autoplay=on&V=2&format=json

The Jets lost one of their defensive ends in Sunday’s 18-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Adam Gase said after the game that Kyle Phillips is out for the year with an ankle injury. Phillips went down once in the game with an injury but was able to come back, only to re-injure himself again. A cart had to be brought out for Phillips the second time.

Breshad Perriman is being evaluated for a concussion after he took a vicious hit from Micah Hyde while attempting to make a catch late in the fourth quarter. Perriman was down on the ground for a while but was able to get up and walk off to the Jets’ locker room.

Jamison Crowder (groin) didn’t play on Sunday because he was unable to practice on Friday. The Jets will have to monitor that this week.

Short-handed 49ers secondary gives Sam Darnold perfect opportunity to bounce back

The 49ers will be without Richard Sherman and likely two other veteran cornerbacks Sunday, creating a chance for Sam Darnold to bounce back.

While it’s hard to envision Sam Darnold playing worse than he did in Week 1, his matchup against a banged-up 49ers secondary this weekend gives him the perfect opportunity to rebound.

The 49ers will be without their No. 1 cornerback, Richard Sherman, who was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a calf injury. Although it was reported Wednesday that CB Ahkello Witherspoon was in the concussion protocol, he returned to practice Thursday in a non-contact jersey. In other Niners injury news, veteran CB Jason Verrett (hamstring) did not practice Thursday and his status for Sunday’s game doesn’t look promising. The 49ers also placed CB Tim Harris Jr. (hamstring string) on the practice squad IR.

Already down three or four cornerbacks, depending on Witherspoon, San Franciso signed Ken Webster off the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad and added Brian Allen and Christian Angulo to its own practice squad.

Things are already looking ominous for a 49ers secondary that struggled in their season debut against the Cardinals. Emmanuel Mosley, who figures to step into a starting role, was targeted 14 times by Kyler Murray in the 49ers’ 24-20 loss. Mosley allowed 10 receptions for 92 yards, giving up five first downs in the process.

The 49ers went from stifling opponents’ passing attacks en route to a Super Bowl run to diving deep into their depth chart in the second week of the 2020 season. Last season, the 49ers were No. 1 in the least amount of passing first downs, yards per attempt and total passing yards allowed. It will be nearly impossible for San Francisco’s current unit to replicate that production.

The Jets offense, however, will also be down a few bodies. Frank Gore is the starting running back with Le’Veon Bell hurt and Jamison Crowder’s status is uncertain after missing Thursday’s practice. If Crowder misses Sunday’s game, that leaves Breshad Perriman, Chris Hogan and Braxton Berrios as the starters.

As both teams enter an already critical junction in their respective seasons, Darnold has a chance to put his forgettable Week 1 performance aside and step up to the plate against the defending NFC Champions.

Looking back at his Week 1 play against the Bills, Darnold took accountability for his poor showing, pinpointing his dud of an outing on a lack of timing and poor footwork. While missing a handful of open targets during New York’s 27-17 loss, he also dealt with a 44.7 percent pressure rate from the Bills defensive line. That number certainly won’t get any better against the 49ers’ talented defensive front.

In addition to going 21-35 passing, throwing for 215 yards, one touchdown and one interception, Darnold also had a 19.3 QBR. Darnold went 3-11 for 69 yards on passes of more than 10 yards, with five of those 11 attempts being off-target throws, per ESPN Stats & Info.

New York will only go as far as its third-year quarterback takes it. Darnold certainly didn’t look the part in Week 1, but he has the fortune of going up against an injured defense in Week 2.

Darnold’s not going to have an ample amount of time to throw Sunday, so Gang Green’s best bet is attacking San Francisco’s secondary often and early. With the 49ers paper-thin at cornerback, Darnold has a great opportunity at getting his third season back on track, but it’s up to him to execute.

Adam Gase mad at himself for letting Le’Veon Bell back in game vs. Bills

Adam Gase regrets putting Le’Veon Bell back in Sunday’s game against the Bills after he saw the running back grab his hamstring in the first half.

Adam Gase regrets putting Le’Veon Bell back in Sunday’s game against the Bills after he saw the running back grab his hamstring in the first half.

Gase told reporters following the game that he was mad at himself for allowing Bell to return to the game for the second half of the Jets’ 27-17 loss to the Bills. Late in the first half, Bell slipped going out for a pass and pulled his hamstring. He played out the rest of the half and then came out for the second half until the Jets pulled the plug on him. Bell had six carries for 14 yards and 32 receiving yards for the game.

The Jets are already hurting at running back with the loss of La’Mical Perine. He missed the Jets’ first game with an ankle injury that he suffered in training camp. Behind Bell, the Jets have Frank Gore and Josh Adams.

Gase doesn’t know the severity of Bell’s injury just yet, but hamstring injuries are tricky.

LB Blake Cashman also left the game and did not return following a groin injury.

Sam Darnold, Jamison Crowder among Jets’ Studs & Duds in brutal loss to Bills

Jets Wire takes a look at the New York Jets studs and duds from the team’s 27-17 season-opening loss at the hands of the Bills.

For Adam Gase and the New York Jets, Sunday’s season opener was a failure on every level.

The Jets came out flat and underprepared and were weighed down by an unimaginative and underperforming offense. Meanwhile, the defense looked soft and anemic. The same issues that plagued the Jets last season were on full display in the team’s 27-17 loss at the hands of the Bills. Even with the Jets losing two starters to injuries — Le’Veon Bell and Blake Cashman — the worst takeaway from Sunday’s performance was how baldy Sam Darold played. The clock is ticking for both Gase and Darnold and neither did themselves any favors Sunday.

With that said, let’s take a look at Gang Green’s studs and duds from its season-opening loss.

Dud: HC Adam Gase

(AP Photo/John Munson)

Adam Gase had an opportunity to turn over a new leaf in his team’s season opener.

Instead, the Jets were embarrassed, out-coached, outplayed and outsmarted in every possible way. Watching the Bills put up 27 points with Buffalo’s offensive coordinator Brian Daboll utilizing his available talent to the best of their abilities made the loss even more frustrating for Jets fans.

The Jets have a healthy Sam Darnold, a revamped offensive line, a motivated Le’Veon Bell and an underutilized weapon in Chris Herndon, and yet the offense looked reminiscent to the one Luke Falk ran in 2019.

That falls on the lap of Gase, who is running out of time and excuses. His team didn’t look ready to play football Sunday and it doesn’t get any easier from here on out.
