Jets open preseason, Robert Saleh era as favorites over Giants

Odds have the Jets defeating the crosstown rival Giants in their Saturday night preseason opener.

A new era of Jets football kicks off on Saturday night, as Robert Saleh will make his head coaching debut in New York’s preseason opener against the Giants.

Tipico Sportsbook predicts the Saleh era will begin on a high note, as the Jets are favored to defeat their crosstown rival. Gang Green is currently listed at -125 (bet $125 to win $100), while the Giants sit at +100 (bet $100 to win $100). The over/under points total for the game is 34.5, with the over at -115 (bet $115 to win $100) and the under at -105 (bet $105 to win $100).

New York’s preseason matchup with the Giants will feature a ton of new faces on the field and the sidelines. Not only will Saleh and Giants second-year head coach Joe Judge meet for the first time, but Zach Wilson will also take the field for his first game action.

Wilson has been up-and-down throughout the Jets’ early training camp practices and struggled during the recent Green and White scrimmage. The preseason will afford New York’s prized rookie signal-caller the opportunity to work out the kinks against an opposing defense.

Saturday night’s action will also be key for the Jets’ other rookies. Michael Carter and Elijah Moore are both fighting for starting spots at running back and wide receiver, respectively, and figure to receive plenty of first-team repetitions to test their chops. Defensively, Michael Carter II and Brandin Echols are competing for New York’s starting nickel cornerback position, while Hamsah Nasirildeen and Jamien Sherwood are duking it out at weak-side linebacker.

Which teams have best odds of acquiring Jets All-Pro Jamal Adams?

Oddsmakers believe that the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens have the current best odds at landing Jets disgruntled star, Jamal Adams.

Unhappy and growing impatient with his contract extension negotiations, Jamal Adams formally requested a trade from the Jets on Thursday afternoon.

Adams listed eight teams that he would welcome a trade to. Among them are the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens, who have the best odds to acquire Adams at +250 and +350, respectively, according to SportsLine. The Texans and Seahawks have the third- and fourth-best odds to acquire Adams.

Even though Adams requested a trade, the Jets don’t seem to be too inclined to grant that request. New York still has at least two years of team control and has planned all along to eventually work out a deal with the disgruntled All-Pro safety. With that, no trade appears imminent.

Still, teams will be interested in acquiring Adams and it appears one of those teams will be the Dallas Cowboys. Ever since the Jets were said to be listening to offers for Adams at last season’s trade deadline, he has been linked to his hometown Cowboys. While a homecoming would certainly be welcomed and Adams’ brash personality would fit right in with the Cowboys’ culture, Dallas still needs to pay its franchise quarterback and may not have the financial flexibility to risk assets for a player of Adams’ caliber.

The Ravens have a need at the strong safety position after the team parted ways with Tony Jefferson this offseason. However, like the Cowboys, they have their own players to pay and it’s unlikely the Jets will want to trade Adams within the AFC unless its for a monster haul. While the Seahawks and Texans were both playoff teams this past season and would definitely welcome a player like Adams to aid their secondaries, they also don’t have many assets or cap space to part with.

Right now, if Adams is traded by the Jets, it seems most likely that the Cowboys would be the team he would be playing for in Week 1 of the 2020 season. While oddsmakers view this as the most logical destination and a good bet to make, the Cowboys have already tried to trade for Adams before and the price was way too high, according to NFL Network’s Jane Slater.

The most likely outcome is that the Jets will retain Adams’ services, but it remains to be seen whether Adams is using this as a tactical negotiation trick or if he will truly force his way out.

Oddsmakers expect more losing for Jets in 2020

Caesars Sportsbook released its NFL odds for the 2020 season and don’t see much improvement for the Jets, having them at over/under 6.5 wins

Caesars Sportsbook has revealed updated over/under win totals for every NFL team. Things are not looking so good for the Jets there, as the sportsbook has them set New York’s over/under at 6.5 victories in 2020.

After a promising 7-9 finish for Gang Green in 2019 — despite a 1-7 start — the oddsmakers expect more of the same for the Jets in 2020. The Dolphins, Bengals and Jaguars are the only remaining AFC teams that are expected to have a lower win total than the Jets in 2020.

The Ravens and Chiefs share the AFC’s highest total, with both pegged at 12 wins. Staying in the division, the Bills (9) and Patriots (8.5) are being held to a higher standard with oddsmakers feeling better about Buffalo’s chances to win the AFC East due to the departure of Tom Brady. Just below the Jets are the Dolphins (6), but with three first-round picks in next week’s draft, they can surely make up some ground.

It’s not surprising that Las Vegas’ oddsmakers are so low on the Jets’ chances of improving their win total from a year ago. In 2020, the Jets will play the AFC and NFC West, which includes last year’s Super Bowl teams, the Chiefs and 49ers.

On paper, the Jets have one of the more difficult schedules and, besides upgrading their interior offensive line, they haven’t done much to close the gap on their opponents. The team’s inconsistent results during the 2019 season were also a determining factor.

Just a week away from the draft, the Jets have a chance to bring in impact starters to compete for a wild card spot. However, they’ll have to prove themselves on the field before Vegas budges on its over/under win total.
