Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Chris Mayfield has reportedly entered the transfer portal and will leave Michigan State.

Rainer Sabin of The Detroit Free Press broke the news on Mayfield’s transfer around 4:15 p.m. EDT on Monday. Mayfield was the fifth Spartan to enter the portal and leave the program on Monday alone.

Mayfield redshirted this past season and never took a snap for the Spartans in his one year with the program. He was named Scout Team Co-Defensive Player of the Week vs. Northwestern this past season, according to MSUSpartans.com.

Mayfield is originally from Hilliard, Ohio and was a three-star prospect in the 2020 class.

Former five-star linebacker, Alabama transfer Ben Davis commits to Texas

Alabama transfer linebacker Ben Davis officially announced his commitment to the University of Texas on Monday.

In early March, a report from Inside Texas stated that Alabama graduate transfer linebacker Ben Davis was expected to join Steve Sarkisian’s roster in Austin.

The former five-star prospect officially announced his commitment to the University of Texas on April 26. Davis spent five years in Tuscaloosa, redshirting his freshman year in 2016. He appeared in 23 games and recorded eight tackles, one sack and one pass breakup.

Davis ultimately chose to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Feb. 15 and was one of the most highly sought-after players in the portal.

In the 2016 recruiting class, Davis was rated the No. 1 player from the state of Alabama and a top 10 player in the country according to 247Sports composite rankings.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound playmaker will make an immediate impact for Texas in the hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end role called the Jack. The Longhorns have now brought in LSU’s Ray Thornton, Notre Dame’s Ovie Oghoufo, New Mexico State’s Devin Richardson and Davis to try and fill the void of production left by Joseph Ossai.

Michigan State football senior DL DeAri Todd enters NCAA transfer portal

It’s kind of crazy that the team that has probably been the most active in the transfer portal this year is having their craziest day of transfers to date, but that’s the story for Michigan State football this Monday, as a slew of players transferred out of the program following Saturday’s spring practice.

One of the latest transfers on Monday was DeAri Todd, a senior defensive lineman out of Lorain, Ohio. He was a former 3-star tackle in the 2017 recruiting class.

Todd told fans that he is graduating from MSU this year and will leave as a grad transfer with two years of eligibility left.

One of the top kickers of the 2020 recruiting class will be leaving Michigan State. On Sunday, MSU football scholarship kicker Jack Olsen entered the NCAA transfer portal.

[vertical-gallery id=37562]

Olsen is the nineteenth Spartan to enter the transfer portal since the fall. Conversely, Tucker has had fourteen players commit to joining the program in that time.

Olsen was in line to take over the kicking role for Matt Coghlin, but the Spartans’ long-time kicker decided to use his extra year of eligibility granted due to the pandemic to return for the 2021 season.

Olsen was a top-5 ranked kicker in his class.

Texas lands transfer linebacker Devin Richardson

Texas had a successful weekend of recruiting news. The news continued on Sunday when they landed transfer linebacker Devin Richardson.

Texas had a successful weekend of recruiting news.

During the annual Orange-White spring game on Saturday, four-star wide receiver and former Michigan signee Xavier Worthy committed to the University of Texas. Moments later, four-star cornerback Terrance Brooks listed Texas among his top five schools.

On Sunday, the Longhorns dipped into the NCAA transfer portal again and received a commitment from linebacker Devin Richardson. The former-three star prospect signed with New Mexico State out of the 2018 recruiting class. Richardson still has three years of eligibility remaining.

Richardson is a Spring, Texas, native that attended Klein High School. The 6-foot-3 outside linebacker received offers from Utah, New Mexico, Southern University and New Mexico State throughout his recruitment.

In 2019 with New Mexico State, he compiled 69 total tackles (24 solo), three forced fumbles and two sacks. The Longhorns need depth at linebacker and Richardson should be able to make an immediate impact on the Forty Acres.

Michigan State football OL Justin Stevens enters NCAA transfer portal

Michigan State football offensive lineman Justin Stevens opted out of his true freshman season last year due to COVID-19 concerns, and now he will officially never play a game with the Spartans. Shortly after MSU’s open spring football practice, Stevens entered the NCAA transfer portal.

He is the latest in a long ling of Spartans who have opted to leave the program as Mel Tucker continues to overhaul the roster.

Stevens was a 3-star recruit out of Mississauga, Ontario and part of Mark Dantonio’s last recruiting class with the program.

Twitter critical of Dan Mullen following his transfer comments

The NCAA will allow one time transfers and Twitter was not happy with Dan Mullen’s take on the subject.

The NCAA has adopted a new transfer portal rule for the future. Now, student athletes in more major sports like football and basketball can transfer once and be immediately eligible at their new school.

There are some drawbacks of the new rule. There will be more transfers, and players may be less patient while they wait to develop. More potential negatives of the rule change include:

Fewer scholarships available to high school recruits. Power programs poaching players from small schools. Rosters turning over quicker than coaches can keep up.

Penn State football coach James Franklin has a well-informed opinion on the topic. Like all college football coaches, he has seen the risks and rewards of the transfer portal. Franklin knows the old system was being taken advantage of and was not producing equitable outcomes for all, as Georgia football fans know from the Luke Ford transfer.

James Franklin weighed in on transfers:

“Let’s be honest, over the last two years everybody knew all the transfer policies and the requirement to get immediate eligibility and everybody was saying whatever they had to say to become eligible.”

Overall, the new transfer rule is necessary. Student athletes should have an option to change schools if they are unhappy. In fact, they should not need a reason at all. Transfers should not be punished and have to sit out one season. Instead, they should be able to play immediately. The new transfer rule makes the system better.

It is troubling that coaches will now be tempted to recruit players from rivals, but that already happens to an extent.

For example, Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen recruited and landed a transfer from Georgia, outside linebacker Brenton Cox. Mullen has gone on to secure even more transfers, but he still argues for players to stay longer and develop at Florida despite the new rule.

Twitter was not happy with Mullen’s comments, especially since they can be interpreted as hypocritical. Remember, Mullen left Mississippi State partially because that program was developing slowly.

Michigan State football has made another big splash in the NCAA transfer portal, and it’s also going to benefit Tom Izzo and the basketball team. On Friday, dual sport athlete and former 4-star wide receiver, Maliq Carr, announced that he is officially committed to transfer from Purdue to MSU.

Carr is expected to play both football and basketball, making him the second dual sport athlete Tom Izzo will get to have on his team after Keon Coleman, saving him a scholarship while still getting a high-caliber athlete on his roster.

Carr is from Oak Park, Michigan and was the No. 175 ranked player in the 2020 class. He played sparingly as a reserve last year for Purdue, only catching one pass for 15 yards against Iowa on October 24.

Texas Basketball: Horns are a favorite to land the SEC’s top rebounder

Vanderbilt’s Dylan Disu has entered his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal and the Texas Longhorns are the favorite to land the top SEC rebounder.

Newly hired Texas head coach Chris beard has been attacking the NCAA transfer portal during his short stint with the program.

Beard and the Longhorns already landed former Utah star Timmy Allen, a highly recruited guard from Kentucky in Devin Askew and Creighton transfer Christian Bishop. Now, Texas has the potential to land another big name within the portal.

Vanderbilt sophomore forward Dylan Disu entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal on Wednesday and the Longhorns are now considered to be the favorite to land the SEC’s leading rebounder.

Disu is a local product from Pflugerville, Texas, and played two seasons at Vanderbilt where he started 17 games as a sophomore before undergoing a season-ending knee surgery. He’s on track to make a full recovery.

In his second season, he became the full-time starter where he averaged 15.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. Disu shot 49.2% from the field, 36.9% from three-point range and 73.6% from the free throw line.

This would be another huge get for Texas in the Chris Beard era. A player of this size (6-foot-9, 220-pounds) who can do it all and guard all five positions could be what puts the Longhorns among the best for the 2021-22 Big 12 basketball season.
