Texas sends Xavier packing, advances to Elite Eight with 83-71 win

Texas will face the Miami Hurricanes Sunday with a chance to reach its first Final Four since 2003.

For the first time since 2008, the Texas Longhorns are headed to the Elite Eight. Interim head coach Rodney Terry and company won in dominant fashion.

The Longhorns never trailed in the game after a fast 8-2 start. Texas point guard Marcus Carr led the scoring charge early with 18 points on the game. While the Texas offense was scorching hot, the effort on the defensive end may have won the game for the Longhorns.

Xavier shot 43.8% from the field. It didn’t feel like the percentage was that high. Musketeer post player Jack Nunge shot a woeful 6-for-19 on field goal attempts, many of which were layups or in close range. The strong defensive performance by Texas occurred for the most part without Dylan Disu, who suffered a lower body injury early.

Tyrese Hunter finished with the highest mark totaling 19 points for the game. Christian Bishop followed with 18 of his own, with Sir’Jabari Rice adding 16 points for the team.

Social media reacts to No. 10 Texas’ comeback win over No. 7 Kansas State

Texas’ comeback win over the Wildcats has social media buzzing.

No. 10 Texas picked up an impressive road win over No. 7 Kansas State on Saturday. The Longhorns used a huge second half to erase a 14-point deficit and escape with a 69-66 victory.

Texas displayed a total team effort, with five players scoring in double figures. A strong defensive performance forced 19 Wildcat turnovers.

The Longhorns’ comeback win over the Wildcats has social media buzzing. Here is a look at some of Twitter’s best reactions to the big win in Manhattan.

WATCH: Texas F Christian Bishop drops the anvil with an alley-oop dunk

Christian Bishop puts the West Virginia defense on a poster with this dunk.

On Saturday, Texas basketball had the unenviable task of facing West Virginia in Morgantown. As you can imagine, it’s usually not a comfortable trip for Texas players.

Christian Bishop bucked trends and made himself at home with a highlight reel dunk. The play was the first of a series of back and forth offensive punches landed by each team.

Arterio Morris got the big play started with a transition steal as West Virginia attacked in the fast break. Morris sent an outlet pass ahead to Tyrese Hunter before Hunter lobbed a pass toward the basket. Bishop took care of the rest, sending the basketball home with authority.

Texas isn’t in the business of simply playing entertaining basketball. Albeit, its hard to argue that the team is not fun to watch since Rodney Terry took over.

There’s still plenty for the team to improve as the season progresses. Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to see Texas actively taking fast break points before opponents settle into half court defense.

Texas in the mix for Utah Valley star transfer Fardaws Aimaq

One of the most sought-after players in the NCAA transfer portal has narrowed his options down to five schools.

One of the most sought-after players in the NCAA transfer portal has narrowed his options down to five schools.

The former Utah Valley big man Fardaws Aimaq is focusing on Gonzaga, Iowa, Washington, Texas Tech and Texas as potential transfer destinations. Aimaq will also be testing NBA draft while keeping his college eligibility.

The 6-foot-11 center put up huge numbers for the Wolverines in the WAC last season. He averaged 18.9 points and 13.7 rebounds in 32 total starts. Aimaq is coming off back-to-back WAC defensive player of the year awards.

Inconsistent frontcourt play was a weakness for Texas a season ago. The Longhorns received great news with the return of Christian Bishop. Landing Aimaq would provide Texas the flexibility to play Bishop in his more natural position of power forward.

Texas’ roster faces lots of uncertainty with several players having decisions to make about their futures. Aimaq would be a huge piece of the puzzle for the 2022-23 season.

Texas Basketball: Christian Bishop returning for 2022 season

Big news for Texas basketball!

Just days after an emotional season-ending loss to Purdue, Texas basketball has received fantastic news as staring forward Christian Bishop announced his intentions to return for another season. A big win for Chris Beard and his staff.

Bishop really came into his own down the stretch of the season after Tre Mitchell’s departure in early Feb. He scored in double figures in each of Texas’ two NCAA tournament games.

Keeping Bishop in the fold is a major plus for Texas’ frontcourt next year. Dylan Disu did not play at 100% for most of the season while Texas lost Mitchell and Jaylon Tyson midseason. Five-star Dillon Mitchell should provide an in-flux of talent at the position.

It remains to be seen how many of his teammates join Bishop in coming back, but this is a good sign Chris Beard has the program heading in the right direction.

Texas Basketball: Five Longhorns receive All-Big 12 honors

Five Longhorns receive All-Big 12 honors.

Texas basketball did not quite reach its lofty preseason expectations in Chris Beard’s first season in Austin.

Despite not playing to its preseason top-five ranking, Texas still had a solid year. The Horns wrapped up the 2021-2022 regular season with a 21-10 record, good for a No. 4 finish in the Big 12 conference.

Texas saw multiple individuals have nice seasons. Five Longhorns received All-Big 12 honors on Sunday:

  • F Timmy Allen (second team, all-newcomer)
  • G Marcus Carr (third team)
