Timmy Allen signs with Memphis Grizzlies as UDFA

Timmy Allen earns a chance with the Memphis Grizzles.

Timmy Allen was one of three players that Texas had as draft hopefuls for Thursday’s NBA Draft, and similar to the other two players in Sir’Jabari Rice and Marcus Carr, his name was not called during the draft.

However, also similarly to the other two Longhorns he was picked up following the conclusion of the draft. Allen was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies as an undrafted free agent and will have a chance to prove himself during the summer league.

After spending three seasons at Utah to start his career where he earned all Pac-12 honors, Allen transferred to Texas where he spent the final two seasons of his college career. During his first year in Austin he led the team in scoring averaging over 12 points per game, and finished his entire college career averaging nearly 14 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, and nearly three assists per game.

What likely hurts Allen is the fact that he has a much more old school game, as he lived in the mid-range. Allen shot the three at a 24.8% clip in college, which is something he desperately needs to improve upon if he has any chance at sticking around in the NBA.

Texas opens as an early favorite in Sweet 16 matchup with Xavier

Texas is set to take on Xavier in the Sweet 16 on Friday night in Kansas City.

Texas is set to take on Xavier in the Sweet 16 on Friday night in Kansas City. The Longhorns open up as an early four-point favorite in this matchup against the Musketeers.

Texas’ path to the Sweet 16 included a 20-point first-round victory over Colgate and a tight contest vs. Penn State. Xavier mounted a massive second half comeback against Kennesaw State in the Round of 64 before handling Pitt next.

Xavier presents some similar challenges as Colgate and Penn State. The Musketeers are an excellent offensive unit led by one of the nation’s best three-point shooting attacks.

Texas’ perimeter defense must continue to force difficult shots on the outside. Tyrese Hunter and Timmy Allen are two players Rodney Terry will trust to slow down Xavier’s shooting.

Dylan Disu is going to play a vital role for Texas again after a career game against Penn State. Xavier is going to be without stud forward Zach Freemantle in the frontcourt due to injury.

Another strong performance from Disu, along with a bounce-back game from the guards, would make Texas tough for anyone to beat.

Texas and Xavier will square off at 8:45 p.m. CT at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Friday night.

Five reasons Texas HC Rodney Terry will be assessed on March success

We look at why we’ll assess Terry’s coaching job on what he does in the NCAA Tournament.

We’re a day away from Texas head coach Rodney Terry’s biggest slate of games. For the Longhorns’ acting head coach, the task is simple and straightforward: Get to the second weekend.

Terry and the Texas Longhorns (26-8) face the Colgate Raiders (26-8) in what could be a sharp-shooting contest from the outside. To date, the game is the most important event of the season for the 2022-23 squad.

Everything the team has done to this point is important. Taking care of business in high profile games and in the conference tournament sets the Longhorns up for a manageable tournament path. That said, the team needs to capitalize or there will likely be changes.

If Terry and company beat Colgate and the winner of Texas A&M/Penn State, the administration can’t ignore what the coaching staff has accomplished. If they can’t make it out of the weekend, the athletic department might reconsider who leads the team.

Here are a few reasons why we’ll judge Terry’s coaching job on what he does in the NCAA Tournament.

Texas F Timmy Allen OUT against Oklahoma State on Thursday

Allen is “day to day” with a lower right leg injury.

Texas will be without senior forward Timmy Allen for its Big 12 tournament matchup with Oklahoma State on Thursday night.

The university reports Allen is “day to day” with a lower right leg injury.

Allen has been a key contributor for the Longhorns over the past two seasons. The former Utah transfer is averaging over 11 points and six rebounds per game in over 60 starts for Texas.

Not having Allen opens the door for Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year Sir’Jabari Rice to slide into the starting lineup. Freshman Dillon Mitchell and senior Christian Bishop will be tasked with a more significant role in the front court.

Texas swept Oklahoma State during the regular season and looks to advance to the Big 12 semifinals with another win. The Cowboys are on the NCAA bubble, needing a victory to feel good about its chances on selection Sunday.

Getting Allen back by the NCAA Tournament is a priority for Rodney Terry and Texas basketball, even if that means playing in the Big 12 tournament shorthanded.

Longhorn fans react to No. 10 Texas’ massive win over No. 11 Baylor

Texas moves into first place in the Big 12 with the win over Baylor.

No. 10 Texas bounced back in a big way against No. 11 Baylor. The Longhorns held on late to take down the in-state rival Bears 76-71.

The victory gets a monkey off Texas’ back as Baylor has owned the rivalry of late, winning 12 out of the previous 13 matchups.

Sir’Jarabi Rice led all scorers with 21 points off the bench for Texas. Rice was feeling it from beyond the arc, hitting four of five three-pointers in the effort.

Timmy Allen provided 18 points of his own, along with six rebounds and four assists.

Rodney Terry has his group playing competitive basketball at the right time. The Longhorns improve to 18-4 overall and 7-2 in Big 12 Conference play on the season. A couple of results going in Texas’ favor could give the Horns sole possession of the Big 12 lead this week.

The win created quite a stir amongst Texas fans on social media. Here are some of Twitter’s best reactions to Texas taking down Baylor.

Oklahoma Sooners come up short falls short in battle with Texas Longhorns

In the last game of 2022, Oklahoma lost 70-69 at home to the No. 6 Texas Longhorns.

On the last afternoon of 2022, the Oklahoma Sooners in a tightly contested game against the No. 6 ranked Texas Longhorns 70-69. It came down to the final moments, but ultimately, the Longhorns got more stops when it mattered most and iced the game on the free throw line.

Grant Sherfield led the way for the Sooners with 22 points on 9 of 19 shooting. His 16 first-half points paced the Sooners early. The Longhorns made adjustments in their off-ball help defense and did all they could to quiet Sherfield in the second half.

Oklahoma trailed much of the first half but kept the game close. A 12-1 run by Oklahoma leading into the under-four-minute TV timeout was the driving force to a 35-31 Sooners lead at halftime.

Texas guards began to assert their will in the second half. Marcus Carr had nine of his thirteen points in the second half. Texas forward Timmy Allen also scored 13 for the Longhorns.

In the second half, with so much of the Texas defense keyed in on Sherfield, other Sooners stepped up to keep them in the game. Jacob Groves had three of his five three-pointers in the second half. He finished with 17 points. Forward Jalen Hill chipped in 14 points and six rebounds.

Texas stymied Oklahoma’s offensive fluidity by taking Sherfield out of the game and cutting off driving lanes. That proved to be the difference in the one-point loss for the Sooners.

These rivals will meet again in February. Oklahoma falls to 9-4 on the season and will look to bounce back after the start of the new year with a home game against a gritty Iowa State squad on Wednesday, January 4 at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Texas G Marcus Carr to return for another season

Texas’ 2022 roster is starting to take shape.

Texas basketball continues to have a very nice offseason. Chris Beard is getting his starting point guard back for another year.

Marcus Carr announced he will be using his COVID-19 year of eligibility and will be returning to Texas for 2022. With the news from both Carr and Timmy Allen in the past few days, Texas’ 2022 roster is starting to take shape. The Longhorns also landed New Mexico State transfer Jabari Rice from the transfer portal on Tuesday.

The Toronto native transferred from Minnesota ahead of last season. Carr started 32 games at guard in his first season in Austin. He finished as Texas’ second-leading scorer (11.5 ppg) and assist leader (3.4 ppg).

Carr was Texas’ best player in the NCAA tournament. He guided the Horns to its first March Madness win since 2014 with a victory over Virginia Tech.
