Former No. 11 pick Michael Carter-Williams discusses playing with Rajon Rondo on Bulls:

Michael Carter-Williams recently spoke about what it was like to play with Rajon Rondo on the Chicago Bulls.

The Chicago Bulls have gone through lots of different eras since Michael Jordan left town around the turn of the century. The most notable of the bunch was when Derrick Rose was leading the way, but one of the more intriguing groups was the Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade-led Bulls squad.

Alongside those two, Rajon Rondo helped lead the Bulls on an eyebrow-raising run that ended with them going up 2-0 on the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs before falling short due in large part to an injury to Rondo. Also on that team was Michael Carter-Williams, who recently spoke about his experience.

Carter-Williams recently spoke with Justin Quinn of Celtics Wire about what it was like to play with Rondo.

2013 NBA draft rewind: Sixers pick Michael Carter-Williams at No. 11

In 2013, the Philadelphia 76ers selected Michael Carter-Williams with the 11th overall selection to replace Jrue Holiday.

The 2013 NBA draft marked a big change for the Philadelphia 76ers. They made a big trade earlier in the night, sending Jrue Holiday to the New Orleans Pelicans so they could select Nerlens Noel at No. 6 and then found a Holiday replacement five picks later.

At No. 11, the Sixers selected a long and lanky point guard out of Syracuse, Michael Carter-Williams. The 6-foot-5 guard put together an impressive NBA debut: 22 points, 12 rebounds, nine steals and seven rebounds in a win over the Miami Heat.

That set the tone for his rookie season. He averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals on his way to winning the Rookie of the Year award. It seemed Carter-Williams was going to be the next big star in Sixers history and a foundation piece for the rebuild.

Instead, he was hampered by injuries in his second season and was sent to the Milwaukee Bucks in a deadline deal. The Sixers believed they could find a better option for their future.

Though he helped the Bucks make the playoffs in 2015, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls in the 2016 offseason. After a season in Chicago, he signed with the Charlotte Hornets and then joined the Houston Rockets. He was traded back to the Bulls, who waived him, allowing him to sign with the Orlando Magic for the 2019-20 season. He signed a multi-year deal with them but was waived in February 2022 after missing the entire season due to left ankle surgery.

Jordan Clarkson sent Michael Carter-Williams sprawling and almost missed his open shot

Sometimes you surprise yourself.

We’re deep in the midst of a very entertaining NBA season and while there’s much intrigue in the league and some trade rumors we should discuss, let’s stop here for something important:

An And1-ish dribbling move that ends a defender so badly the guy who made it can barely even finish what he’s doing.

The perpetrator here is Jordan Clarkson, of the league’s best team (so far), the Utah Jazz. The victim is Orlando’s Michael Carter-Williams. This action takes place in what would become a 124-109 Utah win.

Warning: If you’ve ever been this overmatched on a playground court, watching this move could resurrect some rough memories.

Let’s isolate a few frames here.

Everything looks OK here, right? MCW has good position and has denied a few pushes by Clarkson already. He’s feeling OK. He can do this.

This is the moment everything changes. Clarkson is about plant his left foot and push back into a spin move, only Carter Williams has no idea and continues pushing his momentum to his right.

Oh. Oh no. Just crumpled.

The pain.

At this point Clarkson is so shocked by what has happened that he forgets how to play basketball. Or maybe he spun himself into confusion? Hard to say. But instead of just gliding to the completely unguarded net for a lovely lay-in flourish, he does whatever this is.

The camera picked up a flash at exactly this moment, and that’s fitting. That’s good. Because this moment in time is art. Everyone on the court looks slightly bewildered in their own specific way. Clarkson continues to defy all conventions of how to put a basketball through a hoop.

This face is part brag, part relief.

Magic missing Aaron Gordon, 2 others while Sixers miss Ben Simmons

The Orlando Magic will be missing Aaron Gordon and 2 others while the Philadelphia 76ers will be without Ben Simmons.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be shorthanded on Friday when they take on the Orlando Magic without the services of Ben Simmons and that is a huge loss due to the fact that Simmons is one of the elite players in the game. However, the Magic will be missing some key members as well.

Orlando will be coming into this game already missing Jonathan Isaac due to a torn ACL, but now they will be missing another key starter in Aaron Gordon who is dealing with a hamstring strain while also missing backup guard Michael Carter-Williams to a foot injury. So while Philadelphia is missing a key member, the Magic will be equally as shorthanded in this matchup.

We are ranking the top five draft picks made in the 2010s decade by the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 2010s decade in the history of the Philadelphia 76ers will be remembered mostly for the Process. However, the Process produced some good players out of the draft in their quest for a title.

So, with basketball in hiatus for the time being, we are going to rank the top five draft picks in the decade made by the franchise. The decade qualifies from 2010-2019 so, for example, Matisse Thybulle would be able to be on this list if we so choose to throw him on there. 2010 pick Evan Turner would qualify as well, but Jrue Holiday would not because he was selected in 2009.

The list will be based off individual success along with the team’s success and individual accomplishments. With that said, let’s get into this list!

2013 Sixers re-draft: Dennis Schroder instead of Michael Carter-Williams

In the 2013 NBA re-draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Dennis Schroder rather than Michael Carter-Williams.

The 2013 NBA Draft was the beginning of the long “Process” for the Philadelphia 76ers. They traded Jrue Holiday to the New Orleans Pelicans in order to select Nerlens Noel with the sixth overall pick and they had begun their massive rebuild.

The Sixers held the 11th pick in the draft and they selected a long and rangy point guard by the name of Michael Carter-Williams who went on to win Rookie of the Year. However, the Carter-Williams era lasted just one more half of a season before he was sent to the Milwaukee Bucks and he has since bounced around the league a bit.

In a re-draft done by Bleacher Report, they have the Sixers selecting Dennis Schroder who was selected 17th overall in the real draft by the Atlanta Hawks.

B/R on Schroder:

Schroder has the fourth-highest career scoring total and leads all 2013 picks in assists, but he slides outside the top 10 because his stellar counting stats have often been short on substance. He’s 14th in value over replacement player and 17th in box plus-minus in his class, but 2019-20 is the first season he’s ranked above the 50th percentile in points per shot attempt at his position. His teams have also defended better with him off the floor in five of his seven seasons.

Though he’s been a productive starter for most of his career, Schroder seems to have found his true calling as a dynamite reserve for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Quick, confident and never shy about shooting, he’s a useful leader of second-unit offenses.

Schroder is currently on his way to winning 6th Man of the Year for the Oklahoma City Thunder, but let’s rewind the clocks back to 2013. Philadelphia was beginning their unprecedented rebuild and the team probably would have had a similar type of season with Schroder that they did with Carter-Williams.

The only real difference one can maybe envision is that Schroder’s presence maybe alters the team’s future and they don’t get the chance to draft Ben Simmons. Maybe the mad scientist that is Sam Hinkie would have moved him at that point too. [lawrence-related id=30430,30422,30413]

Ranking the top 5 games of The Process era for the Philadelphia 76ers

We are ranking the top five games during the Process era for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The current version of the Philadelphia 76ers is a legitimate title-contending team in the Eastern Conference. However, it was not too long ago when the team was in the depths of a very long “process” where they would intentionally lose games in order to get high draft picks.

In a way, it worked as they were able to grab All-Star talents like Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid as the foundation for which they build their team. They then unearthed some gems like Robert Covington and Dario Saric which netted them talent like Jimmy Butler and, later, Tobias Harris to put around Embiid and Simmons. Still, the Process years were a very painful time.

We are here to rank the top five games of the Process era. We are categorizing the Process as anything from the 2013-14 season and the 2016-17 season. Anything before and after that was not a part of those painful years. Let’s get into it!

A rookie season in the NBA is meant to be that transitional season for a player. For that young man to find his way in the league and eventually become a staple on a team. Some of those players, just get it right away and make an impact.

For the Philadelphia 76ers, they have had plenty of guys come in here and make an impact in their rookie seasons and then become good players. So, we are going to rank the top five rookie seasons in the history of the franchise.

Sixers throwback: Michael Carter-Williams leads Sixers past Celtics

On this day in Philadelphia 76ers history, Michael Carter-Williams beat up on the Boston Celtics.

With the NBA in an indefinite hiatus due to COVID-19, we continue our day-by-day look back at the history of the Philadelphia 76ers. We continue down our path into Sixers history every day as we look to fill the void left by the absence of basketball.

There were not many good nights during The Process, but on one night in Boston, the 76ers showed up and they earned their second win in less than a week. They leaned on rookie Michael Carter-Williams and young Henry Sims to get the job done against their rivals.

April 4, 2014

The Sixers had just ended a nasty 26-game losing streak and they were looking to build off of that win. So, why not try it with a matchup with the rival Celtics? While both teams were not having any type of success in the 2013-14 season, Boston at least still had Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green as they looked to move into a new era.

Instead of Rondo and Green having big games, it was Carter-Williams scoring 24 points, six rebounds, and six assists while Sims had 24 points and nine rebounds as Philadelphia capitalized on 22 Boston turnovers to win it 111-102. Thaddeus Young and Elliot Williams added 15 points each in the win.

Philadelphia won for the second time in four games and it had coach Brett Brown ecstatic as he told reporters:

“We’re on a roll!” Philadelphia coach Brett Brown with a smile. “I’m just so proud of their ability to play as a team and continue to do the right thing and have a true desire to get better.”

The win gave Philadelphia 17 on the season and they would earn two more on the season to finish at 19-63. Carter-Williams ended up averaging 16.7 points, 6.3 assists, and 6.2 rebounds on his way to winning Rookie of the Year. That would be the last real big moment for him in Philadelphia before he was sent to the Milwaukee Bucks at the deadline of his sophomore season. [lawrence-related id=28828,28817,28799]
