Before they can take their place in the College Football Playoff and contend for their eighth national championship, the Sooners must navigate a regular-season schedule that doesn’t look too bad on the surface but has some potential hazards.

With 18 days remaining until the Oklahoma Sooners take on the Tulane Green Wave, let’s power rank the schedule from the easiest matchups to the toughest.

Texas Longhorns Football: Three reasons Texas lost to TCU

Saturday’s loss to the Horned Frogs was a frustrating loss where UT beat themselves all day. Here are three reasons Texas lost to TCU.

Death, taxes, Gary Patterson beating Texas. Since joining the Big 12 in 2012, TCU has dominated the Longhorns, winning seven of the nine matchups. Saturday’s victory made it two in a row for the Horned Frogs.

A frustrating day all-around, Texas will fall to 2-1 on the season and already behind in the Big 12 standings. In the three seasons Tom Herman has been the head coach in Austin, the Longhorns have never begun a season 3-0.

Since 2017, Texas has lost six games to an unranked opponent as an AP ranked team, the most in the country. While Herman continually shows up in the biggest games of the year, his teams struggle against teams they are expected to win.

Against TCU, the story was the same. The Longhorns beat themselves with penalties and poor moments from both the offense and defense. A lot will need to be fixed before next week’s Red River Shootout against Oklahoma.

Here are three reasons Texas lost to TCU on Saturday:

TCU vs Texas: Social media reactions to the 33-31 loss

Following the Texas Christin win over Texas, Longhorns Wire shares some of the top tweets after the 33-31 loss.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Texas Longhorns. While the penalty flags were thrown more than the football it seemed, the Longhorns couldn’t get out of their own way. There were a total of 26 penalties called for a combined 201 yards between the two teams. For Texas it was when those penalties that were called.

The reason the team lost was not the penalties. Not able to be consistent on offense, the turnovers and Sam Ehlinger being off all game long were big keys in this one. The senior picked a good time to have one of his worst games. Over the last two years, Gary Patterson’s team has forced Ehlinger into some of his worst performances.

Following the final gun sounding off, social media did as they usually do. Firing off posts about Texas being back, putting Tom Herman under fire and using any opportunity to fire a shot to the burnt orange nation. We collected a few of those posts.

Texas Christian vs Texas: Fourth quarter recap

It was a wild finish in the Texas Christian Horned Frogs and Texas Longhorns game. After taking the lead in the fourth, Texas would fall.

The Texas Longhorns and Texas Christian Horned Frogs were in a pressure packed game on Saturday. The Longhorns finally got back on top in the fourth quarter after a long run for Roschon Johnson. His 40-yard run set up the go ahead score when Sam Ehlinger found Malcolm Epps in the endzone. A Keaontay Ingram run on the two-point conversion put them up by three, 29-26.

The Frogs were able to get a short field after the offense couldn’t get anything going on their next drive. Max Duggan ran it right up the middle untouched for a 26-yard touchdown. The Longhorns would drive right down the field on a catch and run from Keaontay Ingram. He tried to punch it in from the one but fumbles the ball to TCU.

The Longhorns wouldn’t get the ball back. In the wildest finish in the fourth quarter, it ends on what else a penalty. The Horned Frogs took a safety so that they wouldn’t give the ball back to Texas. The game ends with a 33-31 final. Gary Patterson beats Tom Herman for the third time in four tries. Since TCU joined the Big 12, they have beaten the Longhorns in seven of nine opportunities.

Final Stats:

Sam Ehlinger: 17/36 236 yards 4 TDs and 1 INT

Roschon Johnson: 5 carries, 63 yards

Jared Wiley: 2 catches, 63 yards

Jake Smith: 6 catches, 49 yards 1 TD

Texas Christian vs Texas: Five Reasons the Longhorns Win

Texas looks to win their third-straight game to open the season. Five reasons why the Longhorns stay perfect on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns and Texas Christian Horned Frogs are all set for the early kickoff at 11 a.m. CDT. For TCU, they are looking for their first win of the year. After postponing their lone nonconference game against SMU, The Frogs fell to Iowa State 37-34 in Fort Worth. This will be their first road trip on the young season as they travel down to Austin. It is still unclear who will take the snaps for TCU.

Matthew Downing didn’t look great in his first start after leading only one scoring drive. Max Duggan seemed to move the offense at will once he got into the game. Will they have more of the former or latter when they take the field against the Texas Longhorns defense? Texas fans are hoping for an improved defense on Saturday.

For the Longhorns, this is their second game at home and third game of the year. After escaping Lubbock with a win, the team needs a better showing against TCU. The Longhorns have some issues they need to clean up against TCU before they get ready for Oklahoma in Dallas, Texas next Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.

Texas Christian vs Texas: Three things the Longhorns need to do

In previewing the Texas Christian vs Texas Longhorns game, we highlight three things the team needs to do better this week.

Less than 24 hours away from kickoff between the Texas Christian Horned Frogs and Texas Longhorns, the home team still has plenty of questions despite a 2-0 start. Texas signal caller Sam Ehlinger said it best when he spoke with Mackenzie Salmon of USA TODAY Sports in regards to their expectation and areas of improvement.

I am really excited for the rest of the year and the development that we are capable of making. Obviously, we started the year off 2-0, but the mistakes and area of improvement is so large. We have such a great opportunity to get better every single day. – Ehlinger on expectations and improvements

The Longhorns were able to leave Lubbock with a win over Texas Tech, but it was far from a clean game. Even in wins, there are always things to clean up. There is always room for improves. Especially when you score 63 points and only win by one score. Ehlinger would even point to the fact that he needs to play better as the season moves on.
