Ohio State visits recently decommitted Alabama offensive lineman

Frye was busy this morning

Although it was sad to see Alabama head coach Nick Saban retire, the Ohio State football program is taking advantage of the situation.

Multiple Crimson Tide committed recruits have reopened up the process, one of them being offensive lineman, [autotag]Mason Short[/autotag]. The 6-foot, 6-inch, 315-pound interior prospect is ranked as the No. 8 player at his position and 160th nationally according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Short decommitted from Alabama on Tuesday morning and Ohio State was quick to take notice. Offensive line coach, Justin Frye, took the visit, as he met with the talented player and his high school coaching staff. At the time when the Buckeye coach was meeting with him, he was still committed to the Tide.

It wasn’t quite the entrance that Georgia head coach Kirby Smart had, who arrived via helicopter, but the visit showed Short how much the Buckeyes want him to join their 2025 class.

BREAKING: 2025 4-Star OT Mason Short commits to Alabama

2025 tackle Mason Short committed to Alabama on Sunday evening. Short is a four-star prospect out of Evans, Georgia.

2025 offensive tackle Mason Short announced his commitment to Alabama on Sunday evening.

Short plays for Evans High School in Evans, Georgia. He has taken five unofficial visits to Alabama at this point in time.

Short is the first commitment in Alabama’s 2025 recruiting class. On3’s RPM had Short trending to Georgia. However, he chose the out-of-state program instead.

In an interview with On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Short said, “I felt that I could be developed into a better man, a better player, and be held accountable to play at my best against the best. Alabama really does have that factor – to be the best.”

Tennessee football recruiting: Vols’ notable upcoming March visits

Tennessee football recruiting: A look at the Vols’ notable upcoming March visits

The recruiting dead period ended Feb. 28 and the Volunteers have been actively hosting top recruits for on-campus visits throughout March.

Tennessee currently has five 2024 commitments, headlined by four-stars Jonathan Echols (athlete), JJ Harrell (wide receiver) and Kaleb Beasley (cornerback).

During March, Tennessee hosted four-star linebacker D’Angelo Barber, three-star running back Peyton Lewis, five-star edge rusher Ari Watford and four-star cornerback Jontae Gilbert.

The Vols’ 2024 recruiting class currently ranks No. 9 nationally and No. 5 in the Southeastern Conference. Tennessee’s 2024 class is on pace to be the highest-ranked for the Vols since 2015.

Vols Wire looks at notable upcoming recruiting visits scheduled for the final two weeks in March. Upcoming March recruiting visits are listed below.

Top-50 OT checks in from spring visit to the Swamp

It was a busy weekend in the Swamp as spring practices began and blue-chip recruits came into town.

Florida is hosting plenty of recruits over the first weekend of spring camp, and class of 2025 four-star offensive tackle [autotag]Mason Short[/autotag] is one of the many who checked in from the Swamp on Saturday.

Short received an offer from the Gators when he visited Gainesville for Florida’s matchup against South Carolina during the regular season. Although he’s just a sophomore in high school, Florida is pushing hard for Short. He’s one of the premier offensive linemen in his class and is a Peach State native, which means Georgia’s efforts will work even better on him.

If the Gators are going to get him to Florida, Napier and Co. will have to give it everything they’ve got. Florida State and Tennessee are two other schools to watch closely in this race as they have March visits booked with Short. Alabama, Clemson and Georgia are scheduling meetings with him for the spring as well, according to Swamp247.

It’s still very early in the process for Short. He has just under two years to make an official decision, and there won’t be any shortage of offers for the blue-chip recruit. Being 6-foot-7-inches tall and 280 pounds at just 16 years old means there’s room to grow for Short, and Napier like his offensive linemen big.

Short is ranked No. 28 overall on the 247Sports composite and No. 3 among offensive tackles in the class of 2025. He lands at the same spot nationally on the On3 industry ranking and is No. 2 among players at his position on those rankings.

Gators getting 5-star offensive tackle on campus in March

Florida just added a big-time visitor to its March guest list. Five-star offensive tackle Mason Short has locked in a date with the Gators.

Florida football will host one of the top offensive tackles in the class of 2025, Evans (Atlanta, Georgia) offensive tackle [autotag]Mason Short[/autotag], on a March visit, according to Swamp247.

The 6-foot-7-inch, 280-pound recruit picked up an offer from the Gators during his last visit with the program, which came during UF’s regular season win over South Carolina. This time, he’ll get to see how coaches lead players on the field and during meetings before narrowing things down to a smaller list of schools.

Right now Alabama and Georgia stick out as two major players in his recruitment. The Bulldogs have a 33.6% chance to land him as things stand, according to the On3 recruiting prediction machine, and the Crimson Tide are a close second with 29.4% odds. South Carolina is third at 10.4% and Ohio State is at 8.6%, so Florida could jump ahead of either of those programs with a strong visit.

With just under two years to decide, short doesn’t have to make any decision in the near future. He may look to wrap things up early, though, given he’s one of the nation’s top recruits.

Short is ranked No. 28 overall on the 247Sports composite and is No. 3 among offensive tackles in the class. On3 has him in a similar position on its consensus rankings. Short comes in at No. 31 overall and No. 2 among those at his position there.

It’s time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend.

5-star WR enjoys first Clemson visit, collects offer

The headliner among the juniors that Clemson hosted for the Miami game this past weekend was Ryan Wingo, a five-star prospect ranked among the nation’s top receivers and top players in the 2024 class regardless of position.

It was the first-ever visit to Clemson for the St. Louis (Mo.) University High standout, and also his first time being in the Palmetto State.

Wingo told The Clemson Insider he had “a lot of fun” on the visit between interacting with fans, being at Clemson with friends and collecting an offer from the Tigers while on campus. He was accompanied on the visit by his dad, a couple of teammates and his trainer, among others close with his family.

Dabo Swinney himself gave the scholarship offer to Wingo before the game, making the 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior just the third receiver in the 2024 class to pick up an offer from Swinney’s program.

While getting that offer was certainly one of the best parts of the visit for Wingo, he pointed to one particular interaction he had with fans as the highlight.

“I think the highlight was probably the fan interaction I got. It was like these dudes holding up, ‘We want Ryan Wingo,’ on their phone and stuff. So, that probably was the highlight,” he said.

“It was like a text in big letters, like ‘We want Ryan Wingo.’ It was pretty cool.”

Wingo will head to Missouri this weekend for its game vs. Arkansas. He has also attended games at a slew of other schools this season, including Ohio State, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan, LSU and Ole Miss.

Wingo, who lists close to 40 offers, said his recruitment is “pretty wide open” right now.

Now that he’s visited Clemson and gotten an offer from the Tigers, are they a team he can see being heavily in the mix for his commitment down the road?

“Yes sir, for sure,” he said.

Wingo is rated as a five-star prospect by Rivals and the 247Sports Composite. He is ranked as high as the No. 2 wide receiver and No. 6 overall prospect in the country for the 2024 class by Rivals, while the 247Sports Composite considers him the No. 3 receiver and No. 14 overall prospect in the class.

TCI will publish the full story from our interview with Wingo in the morning.

5-star Georgia OL has ‘great’ visit to Clemson

Wingo wasn’t the only five-star prospect that Clemson played host to Saturday.

Another five-star on hand for the game vs. Miami was Mason Short, an offensive lineman in the 2025 class from Evans (Ga.) High School.

The 6-foot-6, 285-pound sophomore, who already holds more than a dozen scholarship offers, told TCI he had a “great” visit.

“I would have to say the highlight would be the coaches inviting me to stand by Howard’s Rock as the team ran down the hill,” he said.

Short’s family accompanied him to Tiger Town and all thought the visit was great, too, he said.

According to Short – the nation’s No. 3 offensive tackle and No. 28 overall prospect in the country for his class, per the 247Sports Composite – Clemson coaches told him they like what they’ve seen from him and will continue to monitor him in the spring.

Short said it would be “an honor” to receive an offer from the Tigers in the future. His current offer list includes schools such as Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The latest on nation’s No. 1 LB, priority Clemson target

Keeping with the theme of five-star recruits, TCI has the latest on a priority Clemson target in the 2024 class – Jefferson (Ga.) five-star Sammy Brown, the nation’s top-ranked linebacker in his class.

Brown, who picked up Clemson’s first class of 2024 offer back in March, told us he’s been communicating pretty regularly with defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Wes Goodwin and also speaks with head coach Dabo Swinney every couple of weeks or so.

According to Brown, the Tigers are among the suitors recruiting him the hardest right now, along with Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

The 6-foot-2, 227-pound junior has made a couple of visits to Death Valley this season, most recently for the Oct. 1 NC State game after attending the Sept. 10 game vs. Furman, where both of his parents went to college.

Could Brown be back in The Valley this Saturday when the Tigers take on the Gamecocks?

“We’ve thought about making it to the South Carolina game (this) weekend,” he told TCI.

Brown has also been to Ohio State, Georgia and Tennessee this season.

Clemson Baseball reunion a huge hit

On Friday night, Erik Bakich and Clemson Baseball had a reunion that was a big hit. They hit the golf course during the day and had a nice dinner Friday night.

Over 300 former Tigers were in attendance, including a number of Hall of Famers. Brad Miller received his Clemson Hall of Fame jacket during the event.

Everyone in attendance could see how much the program has changed under Bakich. Jack Leggett was in attendance and has an extra pep in his step these days.

5-star 2025 OL picks up an offer from the Florida Gators

One of the top offensive linemen in the class of 2025, five-star tackle Mason Short, has picked up an offer from the University of Florida.

As the 2023 recruiting cycle comes to an end, Florida is beginning to shift its attention to players in the class of 2024 and 2025. Most recently, the Gators offered 2025 five-star offensive tackle [autotag]Mason Short[/autotag], according to 247Sports.

Short was in attendance for Florida’s win over South Carolina on Saturday, and he left town with an offer in hand. UF joins Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State and Tennessee in the race for Short. Each program has extended him an early offer in hope of getting on his good side.

Florida’s recruiting team appears to be treating Short as a priority target, and the Evans High (Evans, Georgia) recruit enjoyed the “amazing atmosphere” he got to experience over the weekend.

“I got to see everything facility wise which was incredible,” Short said. “The staff was very attentive to me and my family throughout my visit which I greatly appreciated.”

At 6-foot-7-inches tall and 280 pounds, Short possesses the size to play in the SEC, and he’s only a sophomore. He’ll be able to refine his game and grow into his body over the next two years while teams try to convince him that their program his the right fit for him.

The 247Sports composite ranks Short No. 28 overall in the class of 2025 and No. 3 among offensive tackles. The site’s individual rankings have him a bit lower overall at No. 38, but he’s up to No. 2 among tackles to make up for it.
