Ohio State football recruiting scouting report: James Peoples

Ohio State football recruiting scouting report: James Peoples #GoBucks

Ohio State football had another dominant recruiting class and landed a consensus top-five class in the country. Once again, the class features serious star power on the offensive side of the football. The Buckeyes snagged a four-star running back from the state of Texas.

Name: James Peoples

High School: Veterans Memorial (San Antonio, TX)

Height: 5 feet, 9 inches

Weight: 200 pounds

Position: Running Back

Strengths

Peoples appears to be a prototypical three down back with the ability to take a workhorse amount of carries as well as be effective in the passing game. He has more than enough athleticism to exploit the smallest available creases provided by the defense. Size is also not an issue, as Peoples is already built well enough to take a Big Ten workload and has the potential to gain at least another 15 pounds in positive weight.

Top five running backs signed to the Big Ten during early signing period

We cover the top five running backs to sign with the Big Ten during the early signing period. #GoBucks

The early signing period is in the books and the newly expanded Big Ten added a wealth of talent.

It would take too long to evaluate every prospect in one piece, but we have already dived into the top incoming gunslingers entering the conference. Now we wanted to provide the top five running back recruits who have signed with Big Ten teams during the early signing period, according to the 247Sports composite.

It should make Ohio State fans happy that despite the drama surrounding the flip of one highly ranked running back, the Buckeyes were able to pull in one of the best running backs in the state of Texas and in the whole country, which will be the highest ranked recruit on this list.

The Big Ten snagged five of the top 25 running back prospects in the country, which is a big number but much lower than the quarterback list. Regardless, let’s dive into the haul we saw.

Watch: Ohio State running back commit James Peoples runs over 20 miles per hour

🔥👟#GoBucks

Speed kills and for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] 2024 running back commit [autotag]James Peoples[/autotag], he’s got plenty of it.

The Texan is one of the top players in the country, ranking as the 5th best back and 79th overall player according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Part of the reason why Peoples is ranked so high is because of his elite speed.

The 5-foot, 10-inch, 190-pound running back was recently the focus of Reel Analytics, an AI-powered sports tech and data company that analyzes video to measure players’ athleticism. It clocked Peoples going a blazing fast 21 miles-per-hour.

By comparison in one of their other recent clips, former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs was clocked at 22.3 MPH. That was with three years of college weight lighting and strength and conditioning under his belt.

If you weren’t excited about what Peoples will bring to Columbus, this should surely change your mind.

Top 10 running backs in the 2024 recruiting cycle

Running backs still play an important role for any offense that wants to be well-balanced.

You need only look at the NFL’s list of free agents to see the running back position being devalued in real-time. There’s a long and analytic conversation to be had there, but the fact that Dalvin Cook, Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott are all still available at this point in the year says everything you need to know. Nevertheless, running backs still play an important role for any offense that wants to be well-balanced—including the high school and college levels.

Here are the top 10 running backs in the class of 2024. To get the composite rankings, we averaged their national rankings from ESPNRivals and 247Sports.

Scouts view: What to expect from Ohio State’s newest commitment, running back James Peoples

You’ll like who Peoples reminds me of #GoBucks

On early Sunday evening, the Ohio State football team found the first half of their 2024 recruiting class running back tandem in James Peoples.

The Texan is viewed as one of the best in the country, the No. 69 best overall prospect and 5th running back by the 247Sports composite rankings. After watching his junior film, the ranking is justified.

Even though Peoples making his verbal to head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] and running backs coach [autotag]Tony Alford[/autotag] at this time, you have to expect the Buckeyes will continue to recruit him until the end. ‘Tis the age we live in.

As a former scout, I’ve watched plenty of film, and here is my assessment of what Ohio State is getting out of running back [autotag]James Peoples[/autotag].

Recruiting Roundup: 4 stars commit to Ohio State, Alabama and Penn State

Here are all of the commitments you might have missed from over the weekend.

Michigan made it official with Jadyn Davis on Friday, earning a long-anticipated commitment from the five-star North Carolina quarterback. The recruiting race never ends, though, and three other Power 5 schools have picked up commitments from blue chip recruits since.

BOOM! Ohio State gets elite 2024 running back, commits while on a visit

The Buckeyes get their first running back of the 2024 cycle #GoBucks

Head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] has mentioned that there was a large need for running backs for the 2024 [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] recruiting class.

After tonight, the search for a second begins as Texas back [autotag]James Peoples[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Buckeyes while on a spring visit to Columbus. It was believed that Peoples favored Ohio State entering the visit, but the verbal was a bit surprising so soon.

The 5-foot, 11-inch, 196-pound Lone Star State star still had several visits scheduled, but he must have liked what he saw while in Columbus to go ahead and pull the trigger. Peoples is a top-five rated running back and 69th overall prospect in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

It’s a little salve to the perceived wound of losing out to in-state running back Joran Marshall to Michigan.

Peoples is the 7th commit of the 2024 class and the third top 100 player to commit to the Buckeyes in what is shaping up to be another stellar recruiting class.

Report: Top running back has Ohio State as leader ahead of weekend visit

Ohio State has a huge visit on tap #GoBucks

When Jordan Marshall decided to commit to Michigan over [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag], many wondered what the Buckeyes’ plan was at running back.

Although they lost out on a local star, that doesn’t mean that running backs coach [autotag]Tony Alford[/autotag] and head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] won’t bring in another big-time talent.

That’s the case with Texas back [autotag]James Peoples[/autotag], who will begin a visit to Columbus Thursday and it could very well lead to a commitment in the future. The 5-foot, 10-inch, and 192-pound ball carrier told 247Sports Bill Kurelic that prior to his visit “Ohio State is my front runner in my recruitment.”

Peoples is rated as the No. 5 running back and 69th overall running back in the 2024 recruiting cycle according to the 247Sports composite. If comparing, Marshall is the No. 7 running back and 91st overall.

This is the start of Peoples’ multiple visits to Columbus, as he has already set an official visit date for June 23rd. Just looking at his upcoming visit schedule, one could say that the biggest challenger to the Buckeyes is Oklahoma.

Ohio State gets crystal ball prediction for four-star running back

Ohio State looks to be leading the way for the No. 5 running back in the country. #GoBucks

Ryan Day has been taking some heat after losing another in-state talent to TTUN. Jordan Marshall of Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller chose Michigan over the Buckeyes recently. It stung to see one of the top-rated players in the state and the No. 7 running back nationally bolt for the northern border.

Maybe this news will relieve the sting of losing Marshall a bit. The No. 5 running back in the nation, James Peoples, has been given a crystal ball prediction to land at Ohio State. The prediction comes courtesy of Oklahoma insider, Parker Thune.

Peoples is a four-star prospect out of San Antonio, Texas. He is a top 100 player (No. 69 nationally) according to 247Sports composite. Other programs still in the mix to land the coveted back are Oklahoma and Texas.

The race to land a commitment from the talented back from Texas is far from over, but Ohio State has to like its chances. The Buckeyes are expected to take at least two running backs in the 2023 class after whiffing on the position in 2022.

Ohio State loses instate running back to Michigan

This one really hurts #GoBucks

It has been a rough go for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] on the recruiting trail the last few days. First, it was former Notre Dame signee Brandyn Hillman, who picked Michigan after a visit, not giving the Buckeyes a chance.

Now in-state running back [autotag]Jordan Marshall[/autotag] will join Hillman playing for Ohio State’s rivals. This one hurts a bit more, as Marshall’s father is a Buckeye fan and the ball carrier was viewed as a priority prospect for [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag].

The good news is that Ohio State has a lot of depth at running back but after not signing one during the 2023 cycle, it is a big need to sign at least two in the 2024 class.

The Buckeyes will now turn their focus to other running back targets like [autotag]James Peoples[/autotag], [autotag]Stacy Gage[/autotag] and [autotag]Sam Williams-Dixon[/autotag]. It remains to be seen if Ohio State will continue to recruit Marshall despite his verbal commitment.
