As preparations for the Kansas City Chiefs 2024 season get underway at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, the future of the franchise’s home remains the leading discussion point.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt shared his thoughts on the team at Arrowhead Stadium with the media at training camp on Monday.

“We have six-and-a-half years left on our lease at Arrowhead, and GEHA Field at Arrowhead is a special place. It’s special for our fans, and it’s special for the players and the coaches, but we do have to look to the future, and we do need a solution starting in 2031, which I know that Mark (Donovan) mentioned,” said Hunt. “We’re glad to have some options.”

On Friday, team President Mark Donovan called the stadium’s future a generational decision, and Hunt echoed the belief that they should be diligent in their evaluation.

“We really appreciate what the Kansas legislature did in passing the upgrade to the STAR Bond bill that potentially would give us an opportunity to look at a stadium over there, and we’re going to work very hard over the coming months and years to come up with a solution that makes sense for the organization, for the team, but also one that makes sense for the community,” said Hunt. “So, we’re approaching it very much with an open mind and look forward to talking to leaders on both sides of the state line.”

The possibility of leaving Missouri is real as the process continues to take shape with a hopeful resolution on the horizon.

Chiefs president Mark Donovan discusses deadline on future at Arrowhead Stadium

The Kansas City Chiefs veterans are coming to Missouri Western’s campus in St. Joseph, Missouri, for training camp. The rookies have had time to get early work, and adding the rest of the roster will open up more drills and full team practices.

Chiefs president Mark Donovan addressed the media on Friday, discussing the looming decision regarding the team’s future at Arrowhead Stadium.

“This is a generational decision,” said Donovan. “This is going to impact the future of this franchise for generations.”

The Chiefs and Royals have played at Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium for over five decades. The outdated conditions at the Truman Sports Complex could be the catalyst for a move of bath franchises in the near future.

“We have to get this right,” said Donovan. “We are going to do the due diligence. We are going to take our time and do it right. But there is a reality to the timing. You can only take so much time to get it right. And that window is starting to close.”

Logistics regarding parking lot size and the Chiefs’ hopes of hosting a Super Bowl one day are all being considered, as the Chiefs don’t want to fall behind other franchises with significant upgrades to their home facilities.

“Really, the deadline is how you can be up and running in a new facility or a renovated facility for January of the 2031 season,” said Donovan. “You’re looking at an existing structure, something we’ve done a lot of work on; there is a little less lead time. If you are talking about something new, it extends the lead time a year and a half. So we feel like we’re in the window now to get something done in the next six months to be in a good position. That’s the timeline we’re working on.”

The next few months will be critical regarding the team’s future location, making each game slated at Arrowhead Stadium more precious than usual.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce responds to new two-year contract extension

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce gave thanks for his contract extension on a recent episode of the “New Heights” podcast.

The Kansas City Chiefs front office staff led by general manager Brett Veach made more than a splash following the NFL Draft as they secured their Pro Bowl tight end for the foreseeable future. Travis Kelce’s new two-year contract makes him the highest-paid tight end in the league.

He had plenty to say about the deal on the latest episode of New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce (Presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment), where the Chiefs tight end shared his thoughts on the new contract and thanked the franchise.

“I am so… thankful to Brett Veach, Mark Donovan, Coach (Andy) Reid,” Kelce said. “Big Red, I love you, big guy. Clark Hunt, man, the Hunt family has been absolutely unbelievable to not only myself in this Kansas City community, but they have just been so generous since I’ve been here in making it feel like home.

“For the past 12 years, man, I’ve been able to make this place exactly that, and I’ve loved every single second of it. I’m gonna love the next two years playing here in Kansas City, and we’ll see what happens after that, man. I’m so excited, and I’m so thankful to this organization for getting it done and making me feel appreciated and compensated the right way. “

According to his brother Jason, Kelce’s extension is for two years, $34.25 million through 2027. Travis told Jason that he hopes this new deal will change the perception of his position moving forward, marking it as a premium role in offenses around the league, and securing fellow tight ends more leverage in contract negotiations.

“I can’t thank Kansas City enough,” Travis explained. “My agents, for {keeping] knocking on that door to see if anything’s available, knowing that I’m not a guy that sits out, I’m not a guy that holds out. I’m a guy that loves coming into the building, and the Chiefs know that, so for them to want to, first of all, want to be able to get this done for me, knowing how much blood, sweat, and tears I put into this thing for I’m extremely grateful and extremely thankful for everybody involved man I love Kansas City for it.”

Kelce has nearly every major tight end record in his career, and he is quickly approaching the all-time marks set by Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez.

Chiefs sign HC Andy Reid, GM Brett Veach, President Mark Donovan to extensions

The #Chiefs extended the contracts of Head Coach Andy Reid, General Manager Brett Veach, and team President Mark Donovan on Monday night.

Just days before the 2024 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs signed head coach Andy Reid, general manager Brett Veach, and team president Mark Donovan to contract extensions.

The move comes after Kansas City secured its second-consecutive championship in Super Bowl LVIII with a win over the San Francisco 49ers back in February.

In a statement sent to the press, the Chiefs emphasized the importance of Reid, Veach, and Donovan in their front office, pointing to the accomplishments that the trio have been able to achieve:

“Together since 2017, Donovan, Veach, and Reid have overseen a Chiefs team which has gone 100-34 (.746) (reg. & postseason combined), claiming seven consecutive AFC West Division Championships, four AFC Championships, and three Super Bowl Championships,” the team wrote. “The club has been in six-consecutive AFC Championship Games including hosting an NFL record five-straight (2018-2022).”

Chiefs WR Rashee Rice issues personal apology after car accident in Dallas

Kansas City #Chiefs WR Rashee Rice issued a personal apology on Instagram after being involved in a serious car accident in Dallas, Texas.

An investigation is underway after a car accident last weekend that involved Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice. The crash injured four people and led to the young receiver being sought by Dallas police for questioning after it was reported that one of the vehicles was registered in his name.

Rice had a statement released on his behalf earlier this week from his lawyer but decided to speak personally via his Instagram Stories.

“Today, I met with Dallas PD investigators regarding Saturday’s incident,” Rice wrote. “I take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities. I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday’s accident.”

According to league spokesman Brian McCarthy, the NFL is monitoring the situation. Chiefs president Mark Donovan took a similar approach when speaking on KCMO this week: “We’ll get to the bottom of it, we’ll gather the facts, and we’ll react accordingly.”

The Chiefs are moving like business as usual until more details are released during the investigation. The 2023 rookie standout is working with authorities but faces an uncertain future until rulings are made.

Chiefs nominated for Sports Team of the Year award at SBJ’s 17th Annual Sports Business Awards

The Kansas City #Chiefs were nominated for the Sports Team of the Year award at SBJ’s 17th Annual Sports Business Awards

The Sports Business Journal is praising the Kansas City Chiefs organization. On Monday, it was announced that the franchise was nominated for Sports Team of the Year at the 17th Annual Sports Business Awards.

The publication considered the Chiefs for the esteemed honor based on several highlighted qualities, such as the custom-wrapped ChampionShip serving as the central entertainment and activity hub for fans during their trip to Frankfurt, Germany, last November for their matchup against the Miami Dolphins. They also hosted the second-highest NFL Draft attendance in event history and the 2023 NFL Kickoff Game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

“It is an incredible honor for our entire organization to be nominated for the Sports Business Awards’ ‘Team of the Year’ because it represents so much hard work and dedication from throughout the organization,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said in a statement. “Sports Business Journal has long been the industry standard for what is happening in the world of sports business.

“Similarly, the Sports Business Awards have become the ultimate recognition for the tireless work that goes into creating, innovating, and pushing the envelope in this space. We extend our congratulations to the other nominees for ‘Team of the Year’ as well as all the groups and individuals that have been nominated across the other categories.”

The other four teams nominated alongside the Chiefs in the category are Inter Miami CF (MLS), the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA), the Texas Rangers (MLB), and the Vegas Golden Knights (NHL). The Chiefs being honored for their work as a franchise behind the scenes and their on-the-field success helps calm the controversy of the recent NFLPA Report Card grade.

The winner will be announced at a live dinner and awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 22, at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square in New York City.

Mark Donovan provides update on Chiefs’ future at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium

#Chiefs team president Mark Donovan provided an update on the team’s future at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Arrowhead Stadium has been home to the Kansas City Chiefs since 1972 and the team currently has a lease in place to remain there through 2031. That said, the future home of the Chiefs has been up in the air.

Ownership has made it clear that their preference is to remain at Arrowhead Stadium with upgrades and renovations to the stadium. However, there are a variety of options that are on the table, including new stadium options both on-site and off-site.

Speaking to media members at the Chiefs’ training camp opening press conference in St. Joseph, Missouri, team president Mark Donovan provided the latest update on the team’s future as it relates to where they’ll play.

Right now, that future is somewhat tied to their neighbors in the Truman Sports Complex, the Kansas City Royals.

“To answer your question, the partnership with the Royals has been great,” Donovan began. “It’s really, really critical to both of us that we have a good partnership as we go through the decision-making process. We’ve been consistent every time that we’ve spoken that it is a process, it’s an important process and that we’re still in the process, but we’re making progress.”

Not only is the Chiefs’ future at Arrowhead tied to the Royals’ decision on a new downtown stadium, but it’s also tied to the vote to extend the 3/8th cent sales tax in Jackson County, which goes toward improvements to Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium. That vote is still set for April 2024.

Donovan reiterated some of what we already have come to know regarding their research and options the options that are on the table.

“I want to be consistent and reiterate something that Clark (Hunt) said, the last time he spoke on this,” Donovan explained. “If everything plays out the way we think it’s going to play out, our preference for us, is to upgrade and renovate (Arrowhead Stadium) and make GEHA Field even better.

“We’ve gone through the process and we’ve made some progress there. There are still three viable options on the table that we’ve got to do the due diligence on. Renovate and upgrade, build new on-site, or build new somewhere else. All three of those options are still part of our dialogue.

“We’ve learned a lot in this process. The good news is, we think the building itself is actually, structurally, pretty sound — which gives us the opportunity (to renovate). Having said that, it’s going to take a significant annual investment to keep that building structurally sound.

“The other thing we’ve learned, good and bad, is just like any project, right? There are some days when you get that phone call that’s like, ‘Hey, we just found this. It might be an issue.’ We’re talking about a core sample of cement that was poured in 1970, those issues could be significant and they could factor into the decision.”

The types of issues that the team runs into during the course of their renovations for the 2026 World Cup could also prove to be a determining factor. The team will have to remove seating to properly fit the pitch and make improvements, with an estimated cost of around $50 million. That work will take place in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

Asked whether any of those renovations would be tied into what they have planned for Arrowhead Stadium’s future, Donovan posed the following question.

“What are we going to do to be compliant for the World Cup, to host that amazing event, that we could potentially keep? (Things) that we could benefit from or not have to re-do.”

Ultimately, the Chiefs’ leadership team feels like they’re prepared for any possibility and have the ability to pivot when necessary. They know they need to get things absolutely perfect for the 2026 World Cup and do right by Chiefs fans as well. They also feel they’re heading down the path of doing what they’d like to do, which is to renovate and upgrade Arrowhead Stadium and call it home for many, many years to come.

“We’re heading towards what we want to do and we’re making good progress towards that,” Donovan said. “There is still a lot of work to do and still a lot of due diligence to do. As it relates to the Royals and their decision, obviously, that factors in as well. If and when they go, then that creates opportunity for us and what does that mean? It gets really complicated. We have a sports complex now that has one tenant. How do you deal with that? You know, sports authority. I will say this, in addition to our communication with the Royals, which has been pretty consistent. We’re also talking to the Mayor (Quinton Lucas), the Governor (Mike Parson), the county, the sports authority. They’re all in the loop on what we’re doing and how we’re doing it and (they’re) very supportive.”

Chiefs decision makers having ‘open discussion’ about alternate uniform, helmets

#Chiefs president Mark Donovan says the team is considering alternate helmets/uniforms more now than ever before.

A total of 14 NFL teams will wear alternate helmets this season according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

You’ll find that the Kansas City Chiefs are not among those teams, but could they be in the future? Chiefs team president Mark Donovan spoke at the team’s opening press conference at training camp, where he was asked about the potential for an alternate uniform or helmet in the future. The Chiefs have long honored the tradition of their uniform, but with current league trends, they could be swayed to adopt an alternate uniform.

“To honor tradition is one of our core, fundamental values,” Donovan told reporters. “But I go back to that balance point of — if you look, more and more and especially this season — it just seems like with all the black helmets coming out and all the alternative uniforms that are out there.”

Back in 2018, Donovan was singing a completely different tune. While he’s not in the business of creating false hope within the fanbase, he did say that the team is having an open discussion about it and that it’s being considered more now than ever before.

“I don’t want to create hope where there isn’t hope, but I will say this. . . there’s an open discussion,” Donovan continued. “There is definitely more of a consideration than there has ever been. We definitely, we’ve had some good conversations about the opportunity. But, as you can imagine, I think we’re the only team or among a small group that has never changed uniforms more than a little bit on the stripe or something like that. That’s important to us too. So it’s finding that balance again. I’ve been here 14 seasons now and in the first couple of years — I came from Philadelphia where we did that pretty successfully and I was really excited about that. After the first meeting talking about (uniform changes), I didn’t bring it up again for a couple of years. But a couple of our teammates on our side kept pushing me and we have opened the discussion again.”

The team has not come to a decision on alternate helmets or uniforms yet, but the discussion will continue and won’t be made hastily. It will all be about finding the right balance between tradition and what is now becoming a trend among NFL teams.

“We’ll see,” Donavan concluded. “This is definitely something we’ll continue to discuss.”
