The Chiefs and Royals need to do the right thing and stay in Kansas City

Kansas City deserves these teams.

Good morning, Winners! Welcome back to the Morning Win. Thanks so much for rocking with this today. We appreciate your time.

The reigning back-to-back NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs might not actually be in Kansas City for much longer. Or, at least not the Missouri one, anyway. The same goes for the Royals, too.

On Tuesday, Jackson County citizens voted in the Missouri general municipal election. A stadium sales tax was one of the big-ticket items on the ballot.

If Jackson County citizens voted “yes” to Question 1, the county would’ve enacted a 3/8th cent sales tax for the Royals to fund a new $2 billion downtown ballpark and for the Chiefs to renovate Arrowhead Stadium completely for $800 million, according to ESPN.

The best-laid plans often go awry, however. A whopping 58 percent of voters voted no on the measure, completely killing it.

It’s time to start from ground zero. The Chiefs and Royals very clearly need to rebuild their proposal into something more amenable for Kansas City’s citizens. The Royals need to pick a better location for their downtown build. The Chiefs may need to throw in more private funding for an Arrowhead renovation. The process needs to be more thorough in its planning and more transparent. That’s what the citizens have been asking for. That’s all that’s needed.

What we don’t need are veiled threats, like the ones Team President Mark Donovan is sending right now.

Team president Mark Donovan said the Chiefs would do “what is in the best interest of our fans and our organization” as we move forward. Let me translate that for you: the Chiefs will move the team if the organization feels like there’s a better deal elsewhere.

Team owner Clark Hunt has made it clear that the team is not interested in renewing its lease for another 25 years in Kansas City without a major renovation. But the lease expires in 2031 — there’s still plenty of time to make this work. There’s really no need to allude to moving at this point. Instead, the Chiefs should be steadfastly committed to staying in Kansas City.

In the end, the organization owes that to those fans. The same goes for the Royals. They rooted for those teams through both the highs and the lows. Chiefs fans filled the stands when championships didn’t even seem possible. Royals fans waited decades for another World Series in 2015.

Both franchises have seen success more recently — especially the Chiefs after winning three titles in four years. And now you’re telling people it’s possible that you just pick up and leave? That’s gross, man. That’s not what this thing is supposed to be about.

I get that this is a business. Bottom lines are at the center of everything for these teams. Whatever it takes to improve that, these teams will do.

But come on, man. Let’s be real. Neither of these teams have a backup plan. This was just a poor effort to get something done. Let’s just set profit maximization aside for a second and do what makes sense.

Go back to the people of Kansas City and figure this thing out.

All eyes on Iowa and LSU

We knew that the Iowa and LSU rematch would get plenty of attention from sports fans everywhere, but y’all. The viewership numbers on this one are kind of insane.

Iowa vs. LSU clocked in 12.3 million viewers, according to ESPN. That number is pretty insane on its own. Here’s our Andrew Joseph with a little more perspective on that number.

“To put that figure into perspective, the NBA Finals — which aired on the more accessible ABC — averaged 11.64 million viewers. The 2023 World Series averaged 9.08 million viewers on Fox and didn’t have a single game average more than 12 million viewers. So, yeah, this was an incredible number for ESPN.”

It’s incredible how far women’s college basketball has come. The best part is it’ll only continue to grow with names like Juju Watkins, Hannah Hidalgo and more leading the way.

The future is bright, folks.

The sad state of the A’s

Nobody knows what’s going on with the Oakland Athletics anymore.

We thought they were moving to Las Vegas but there’s not even a stadium built there yet. So now the team is trying to stay in Oakland for a few more seasons through 2027 until it can officially move to Vegas, but that might not work either. So the A’s are in talks with … Sacramento for a potential temporary relocation now?

It’s a lot. It’s confusing. And it’s clear fans are fed up with it. How do we know? Because these empty stadium photos pulled by our Charles Curtis make it clear that no one cares anymore.

Just look, man.

Tragic, man. Just tragic.

Quick hits: Bronny’s future … DJ Burns on the NFL … and more

— Rumors about Bronny James entering the transfer portal came and went on Tuesday. We don’t know what’s next for him, but his dad is fully behind him. Cory Woodroof has more here.

DJ Burns didn’t say yes to potentially playing in the NFL someday…but he didn’t say no either. Bryan Kalbrosky has more.

— Charles Curtis has details on this latest NBA mock draft with Zach Edey heading to the Milwaukee Bucks. That’s a nice fit.

—Here’s Prince Grimes with odds and picks for the women’s Final Four. This is going to be fun.

— Aaron Rodgers’ hilariously low performance bonus from the NFL is the best.

Geno Auriemma is trying to butter up Caitlin Clark. Probably not going to work. Robert Zeglinski has more.

That’s a wrap, folks. Thanks so much for reading today. We appreciate you taking the time! Y’all are the best.

P.S. … I got my days mixed up yesterday! I’ll be out for tomorrow’s newsletter, not today. You’ll be in good hands tomorrow, though. Don’t worry! Talk soon.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid tossed a successful first pitch at Royals’ Opening Day

#Chiefs head coach Andy Reid tossed a successful first pitch at the #Royals’ Opening Day matchup against the #Twins.

The Kansas City Chiefs are still sharp in the offseason, with their latest success coming by way of Andy Reid on the field at Kauffman Stadium.

poorly executed ceremonial first pitch last year during Cleveland Guardians’ Opening Day from Travis Kelce didn’t rub off on his legendary head coach.

Reid took to the mound on Thursday before the Kansas City Royals’ matchup against the Minnesota Twins, part of Major League Baseball’s Opening Day festivities. The NFL’s oldest active head coach tossed a perfect strike to Royals legend George Brett to officially open up the Royals’ season.

His casual delivery showed no signs of worry or pressure that affected his star tight end on the mound last year.

Reid didn’t show up alone, as he brought the latest Lombardi trophy from Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVIII victory, much to the delight of the thousands of fans at Kauffman Stadium. He received fun commentary from his quarterback and Royals minority owner Patrick Mahomes on his X account shortly before the pitch.

“Anyone know if coach Reid threw a strike? @Royals,””posted Mahomes. The Twins were victorious, but at least Kansas City’s fans enjoyed watching the Chiefs head coach showcase his arm.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid to throw ceremonial first pitch at Kansas City Royals Opening Day

#Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will throw the ceremonial first pitch at the Kansas City #Royals Opening Day on March 28.

Since winning Super Bowl LVIII, the honors and earned respect continue to be showered on the Kansas City Chiefs coaches and players. The usual names of Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes continue to do public appearances, while their head coach will get a chance to show a nonfootball version of himself later this month.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been officially announced to have the honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch at Kansas City Royals Opening Day. On March 28th, before the Royals host the Minnesota Twins, Reid will have his chance to show the world his arm by tossing a baseball over the plate at Kaufman Stadium.

The announcement was made on Tuesday afternoon via the Royals’ social media account, encouraging fans to show up and support the long-time coach.

The newly turned 66-year-old will toe the rubber with hopefully better results than Kelce had in his return trip home to Cleveland last year with a disastrous first pitch. The blunder from the Chiefs’ tight end was so bad that the Royals offered him redemption with a special Chiefs’ night later in the season.

The game will start at 3:10 p.m. CT, with the first 30,000 fans to receive a Bobby Witt Jr. bobblehead. The event could see some of Reid’s current or former players in the stands for support, including part-owner Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs fans react to Bobby Witt Jr.’s massive extension with Royals

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and fans in Kansas City reacted to Bobby Witt Jr.’s massive extension with the #Royals on Monday.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is no longer the only professional athlete in Western Missouri with a massive contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars after Bobby Witt Jr. inked a massive contract extension on Monday.

News broke about Witt’s new deal this afternoon, and fans in Kansas City were delighted to find out that the star shortstop will remain with the Royals for at least the better part of the next decade.

Mahomes owns a minority share of the Royals and was among the first people to react to Witt’s signing on social media.

While the reigning MVP quarterback may not be bankrolling Witt’s deal, Mahomes’ massive 10-year, $450 million contract set the standard for big-spending back in 2020.

Mahomes and Witt are now cemented as the faces of Kansas City’s major sports franchises and may prove to be among the best duos of stars in a single market.

Check out Mahomes’ reaction, among others, to Witt’s deal:

Rutgers baseball Chris Brito signed with the Kansas City Royals

On Monday, former Rutgers baseball infielder Chris Brito signed with the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB).

On Monday, former Rutgers baseball Chris Brito signed with the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB). After signing his contract with the Royals, Brito became the third player from Rutgers 2023 team to sign with an MLB team, joining outfielder Ryan Lasko (Oakland) and right-handed pitcher Drew Conover (Oakland).

The right-handed third baseman played summer ball with the Trenton Thunder and the Staten Island Ferry Hawks this past summer after playing five seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

In 25 games with the Thunder, Brito recorded 27 hits, three home runs, 22 RBIs, and 14 walks in 87 at-bats. The 23-year-old prospect averaged a .336 batting average and a .434 on-base percentage while playing with Trenton.

While playing with the Ferry Hawks, Brito played first and third base, recording 59 hits, 11 home runs, 49 RBIs, and a .317 batting average in 186 at-bats.

In 213 games with the Scarlet Knights, Brito became one of the most accomplished hitters in program history. The Perth Amboy, New Jersey, native became the Scarlet Knights’ all-time home run (46) and RBIs leader (200) this past spring.

Also, the 6-foot-1, 225-pound infielder set the school single-season record with 74 RBIs in 2022 and became the 19th player in Rutgers history to reach 200 career hits (229). He is the first player in program history to record three straight seasons of ten or more home runs.

Zack Greinke somehow managed to throw a changeup at a faster speed than his fastball

Zack Greinke plays by his own rules.

Despite being a massive disappointment in 2023, the Kansas City Royals are at least heading into the offseason with some positive momentum. They’ve won 10 of their past 12 games and still have Zack Greinke being Zack Greinke on the mound.

Even in his 20th MLB season, Greinke remains one of the more unique pitchers and personalities in baseball. Like, who else would shake off his own pitch call? Nobody. He’s one of a kind. That also applies to his pitch velocity — nothing about it needs to make sense.

Typically, a pitcher will throw a changeup to change speeds on a batter. It looks like a fastball out of the hand, but a drop in velocity and sharper movement is supposed to throw off the batter. On Tuesday, Greinke threw a changeup that was FASTER than his fastball. With Greinke, rules don’t matter.

Now, this didn’t happen in the same at-bat. But it’s hilarious to see his fastball and changeup both settling in the high 80s. Last season, he matched velocities with those two pitches in one at-bat … also against the Tigers.

Either way, it worked wonders because Greinke went five innings of scoreless, one-hit baseball before the Royals bullpen let the game get away from them.

Fans also loved seeing that fastball-changeup combo from Greinke. He must be protected at all costs.

The Royals won a second time (!) in 2023 thanks to a walk-off balk

WALK OFF BALK! TWICE!

You would figure winning a game thanks to a walk-off balk would be an occurrence once in a season, maybe once every five years or so.

But twice? In one season? Couldn’t be.

But it did happen to the Kansas City Royals … TWICE! On Tuesday, Gregory Santos was on the mound for the Chicago White Sox in the bottom of the ninth and the bases loaded. He tried to quick pitch Edward Olivares … but you have to come set before you throw to the plate if men are on.

That’s right. WALK OFF BALK TIME BABY!

I guess … good job Royals? Bad job opposing pitchers? Whatever, this is fun:

Trevor Warner is making a case to move up to Double-A ball after a strong few games

Former Aggie third baseman Trevor Werner had himself a week after blasting three homers across two games.

Aggie football kicks off the 2023 season on September 2nd against the New Mexico Lobos at Kyle Field, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk a little baseball, especially when it comes to Aggie favorite Trevor Warner.

The Kansas City Royals decided to take a chance at pick 199 of the 7th round on Texas A&M third baseman Trevor Warner and he’s been impressive as of late. Currently, with the Single-A Columbia Fireflies, Werner has made his presence known in the short 16 games he’s been with the team so far. Below are just a few of stats from while with the Royals affiliate.

  • Batting average – .315
  • OBP/OPS – .398/1.014
  • Homeruns – 4
  • RBI – 19
  • Stolen Bases – 5

Three of the four homeruns have come in the last couple of games.

We are glad to see Werner making progress through the minors and hope to see him get called up in the next few years.

Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. legged out MLB’s fastest inside-the-park home run since 2017 and it was awesome

Royals breakout Bobby Witt Jr. can FLY.

Even though the Kansas City Royals aren’t having the best season, emerging shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. continues to be a bright spot for the team.

The son of MLB veteran Bobby Witt, Witt Jr. showed off his blazing speed in a Monday night game against the Seattle Mariners.

Witt Jr. rounded the bases in a blistering 14.3 seconds, which the Royals say is the fastest any MLB player has gone from home plate to home plate since 2017.

Baseball players being able to run that fast are major assets to their teams, and Witt Jr. looks like one of the most ferocious baserunners in the league.

Like, my goodness. He’s just flying in that clip, further showing why the Royals were able to get a 7-6 win on Monday over the Mariners.

The future will be bright in Kansas City as Witt Jr. continues to grow into one of the MLB’s elite talents.

With baserunning like that, he might already be there.
