Raiders legend Tim Brown on playing Chiefs: ‘Kansas City had some of the smartest fans in the game’

Hall of Fame WR Tim Brown told #Chiefs Wire that “Kansas City had some of the smartest fans in the game” during his time with the #Raiders

The Kansas City Chiefs have faced their share of Hall of Fame opponents over the years, but perhaps none were more difficult to handle than then-Oakland and Los Angeles Raider receiver Tim Brown.

Brown, who recently sat down with Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. for a lengthy interview, recounted his time playing against Kansas City during his time with the Raiders.

While the noise factor at Arrowhead Stadium noise is often discussed as the ultimate home-field advantage, Brown was one of many visiting players who felt the crushing weight of 100-plus decibels first hand.

“I’m on record as saying over the years that I’ve always thought that Kansas City had some of the smartest fans in the game,”  Brown explained to Easton. “They knew when to cheer and when not to cheer, and when something came on board for everybody gonna get quiet. They all got quiet, and at the same time, you look at that stadium. It’s an old school stadium where they’re pretty close to you.

“It’s one of the only places that I played that I would tape up my earhole of the helmet, just to try and cut back on some of that noise you hear. That fan base is incredible, man; they’re getting rewarded for a whole bunch of work that the boys did back in the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s because they deserve what they’re getting. And it’s a beautiful thing for it to happen. At the same time, my Raiders fans and boys need some love, too. So, I’m hoping that our boys can certainly help us out.”

The now-Las Vegas Raiders have the advantage of playing in a dome to amplify their crowd’s roars, but to hear Brown tell it, nothing can compare to the deafening sound of tens of thousands of Kansas Citians on their feet for a rivalry matchup.

Raiders legend Tim Brown on rivalry with Chiefs: ‘Bona fide, from-the-gut hatred’

#Raiders legend Tim Brown told @EdEastonJr about his “bona fide, from-the-gut hatred” for the #Chiefs in a recent interview.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Tim Brown is among the many athletes and celebrities competing in the third annual Invited Celebrity Classic on April 19-21 at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas. PGA Champions Tour pros and celebrities will be paired together all three days of competition, creating a dynamic attraction for spectators and the Golf Channel audience.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. sat down with Brown to discuss this weekend’s golf tournament and the Hall of Famer’s hatred of playing against the Chiefs.

“I can’t wait; I’ve been waiting all year for this,” Brown said, describing his excitement for the golf tournament. “I mean, for another year, I should say. … I didn’t get off to a good start last year and played a lot better on Sunday. I’m hoping to pick it up from there and play good all weekend.”

During Brown’s 16 years with the Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders, he was right in the middle of his team’s rivalry with the Kansas City Chiefs. He explained the mindset and feelings that both teams had for one another on the field during his tenure with the Raiders.

“Oh, the hatred, brother, bona fide from-the-gut hatred for both teams,” Brown said. “I mean, there’re not many games that, after the game, I didn’t shake hands with people. Almost every time we play Kansas City, that never happened. You find a way to, like, ‘Yeah, I’ll see you. I’ll see him later on.’ But you didn’t feel like it, man.

“Because we didn’t have a very good record versus the Chiefs for a while, it certainly made it even harder to be all nice and all that stuff after a game, but yeah, man, it’s the hatred between both teams; I think it was a reason why those rivalries were so good.”

Luckily for Brown, his days of facing Kansas City are over, and he can focus on more important things like his follow-through on drives on the links.

The Invited Celebrity Classic is free to the public and has raised $500,000 for charity over the past two years.

Champions Tour players expected to participate in this event include John Daly, Vijay Singh, Justin Leonard, Retief Goosen, Lee Janzen and Colin Montgomerie.

Pop superstar Taylor Swift braved the elements to watch the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the Miami Dolphins in Saturday night’s Wild Card showdown at Arrowhead Stadium.

The game’s broadcasters did their best to minimize the number of cuts to Swift’s reactions during the playoff matchup, but one fan in the stands caught a great view of her unique celebrations after big plays by Rashee Rice.

Swift was seen giving fellow fans “high fours” following Rice’s touchdown against Miami, which could spark a new tradition for the playoffs in Chiefs Kingdom. Rice, who dons the No. 4 jersey for Kansas City, was the team’s leading receiver in the game and a key part of the Chiefs’ dominant victory.

While some fans aren’t fond of Swift’s attendance at Arrowhead Stadium, moments like this are priceless and serve to show that the 12-time Grammy winner is invested not only in her boyfriend’s team but the game of football at large.

Other recognizable parts of Kansas City’s iconic skyline were lit in red as well, from the Kauffman Center to the skyscrapers downtown. The storied train station served as the featured landmark in the Chiefs’ posts on social media.

While Kansas City’s decorative preparations for the Wild Card matchup against Miami are a sight to behold, fans who plan to attend Saturday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium should plan to dress for function instead of form.

Red is sure to be the color most in the crowd will wear, but with a predicted high of six degrees, fans could be forgiven for wearing layers of Dolphins aqua, white, or orange underneath their Chiefs attire.

Weather forecast: Raiders, Chiefs to have wet Christmas at Arrowhead

Raiders to have wet Christmas at Arrowhead

For Christmas morning this year, the NFL is gifting fans with the Raiders vs Chiefs in Kansas City. Well, it’s Christmas morning if you’re on the West of the Rockies, anyway, as the game will kick off at Noon local time in Kansas City which is 10am Pacific and 1pm Eastern time.

Late December in Kansas City is often just asking for a snowy affair. And there will be precipitation, but with the temperature expected to be around 50 degrees at game time, it won’t be so much a white Christmas but a wet one for these two rivals.

The current forecast calls for rain Sunday to Tuesday, which could mean a muddy field and a wet, slippery ball.

We’ve still five days from the game, so the forecast could change between now and then.

Overall, the NFL has scheduled three games on Christmas Day this year, making it much like Thanksgiving. The seconds game on the slate is in The Giants and Eagles in Philadelphia, with the final matchup being the Ravens and 49ers in Santa Cla…ra.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reveals usage of silent count in road games

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reveals his usage of the silent count in road games

The home advantage of playing with the support of the many fans at Arrowhead Stadium is something the Kansas City Chiefs value every season. The road games feature plenty of support from the Chiefs Kingdom, but there are still some disadvantages against a loud opposing crowd.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared on ESPN’s Manningcast with Eli and Peyton Manning last Monday to commentate on the night’s game and share some of his experiences. A moment during the game, as the loud Buffalo crowd distracted Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, sparked a question from the Manning brothers on whether he utilizes the silent snap count on the road.

“I’m mostly verbal. The only time I’ve been silent was in Baltimore and Seattle. We’re at that under center kind of have to go verbal signals to the offensive line, and it was so loud in those stadiums that even the tackles couldn’t hear me. So those are the two times.”

Mahomes clarified that he wasn’t downplaying other teams’ stadiums while also mentioning that he’s missed out on another notorious fanbase in his career.

“Those were the two that I’ve had. I think that was a Monday night game and Sunday night. So I’m gonna stay away from talking about other fan bases.” said Mahomes, “I actually haven’t played in Buffalo with fans in the stands. So the time I went there was the COVID year, so I don’t know what that environment is like.”

Mahomes does have a matchup against the Bills later this season, but fortunately, it will be at home. He most likely won’t need to worry about the silent count in the friendly confines of Arrowhead Stadium.

Taylor Swift is at Arrowhead to watch Travis Kelce and the Chiefs

Taylor Swift was at Arrowhead on Sunday to watch Travis Kelce and the Chiefs

The hottest “couple” in pop culture added more fuel to the buzz on Sunday.

Pop megastar Taylor Swift was at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday to cheer on her “beau” or “friend” Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Swift was watching the game from Kelce’s suite with his mom, Donna.

KC fans have to hope Kelce is more in tune than Swift was at her Arrowhead shows earlier this year. She botched the start of a song twice and had some fun with it.

The Athletic named Arrowhead Stadium as NFL’s sixth-best venue

The Athletic recently ranked Arrowhead Stadium as the sixth-best venue in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made history at Arrowhead Stadium in recent years and have turned the Truman Sports Complex into the epicenter of American gridiron football since the Patrick Mahomes era started back in 2017.

The Athletic recently ranked every NFL stadium in a piece that looked at which venues provide the best gameday experience for fans across the nation. They chose Arrowhead as the sixth-best stadium in the league, noting that the tailgating and ambiance on gameday make it a destination for any NFL fanatic.

“It would be tough to find a better game-day atmosphere,” Jon Machota of The Athletic wrote. “The tailgating scene is outstanding and the crowd noise during games is among the best in the league. The venue has aged well considering the Chiefs have been playing there since 1972.”

While a top-10 ranking is rock-solid for a stadium as old as Arrowhead, Chiefs fans are sure to take exception to any list that doesn’t rank it as the No. 1 place to see an NFL game.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce shot down in attempt to connect with Taylor Swift

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce tried to kindle a relationship with Taylor Swift at her recent concert at Arrowhead Stadium.

Just before reporting to the Kansas City Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, tight end Travis Kelce was briefly distracted by pop star Taylor Swift, who recently performed at Arrowhead Stadium.

Kelce was in attendance for the concert and had intentions of currying favor with the iconic singer by attempting to give her a friendship bracelet with his name on it. He recounted the story on his popular “New Heights” podcast, which he co-hosts with his older brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce.

“I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” Travis explained. “So I was a little [hurt] that I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”

Questioned by the elder Kelce about his manufacture of the aforementioned bracelet, the tight end went on to elaborate on the finer points of Taylor Swift fandom.

Said Travis: “If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it… She doesn’t meet anybody [at shows], or at least she didn’t want to meet me, so I took it personal.”

Though his pursuit of a date with Swift may have met an abrupt end, Kelce managed to come away from her show with a story that is sure to stick with him for years to come.
