Chiefs nominated for Sports Team of the Year award at SBJ’s 17th Annual Sports Business Awards

The Kansas City #Chiefs were nominated for the Sports Team of the Year award at SBJ’s 17th Annual Sports Business Awards

The Sports Business Journal is praising the Kansas City Chiefs organization. On Monday, it was announced that the franchise was nominated for Sports Team of the Year at the 17th Annual Sports Business Awards.

The publication considered the Chiefs for the esteemed honor based on several highlighted qualities, such as the custom-wrapped ChampionShip serving as the central entertainment and activity hub for fans during their trip to Frankfurt, Germany, last November for their matchup against the Miami Dolphins. They also hosted the second-highest NFL Draft attendance in event history and the 2023 NFL Kickoff Game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

“It is an incredible honor for our entire organization to be nominated for the Sports Business Awards’ ‘Team of the Year’ because it represents so much hard work and dedication from throughout the organization,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said in a statement. “Sports Business Journal has long been the industry standard for what is happening in the world of sports business.

“Similarly, the Sports Business Awards have become the ultimate recognition for the tireless work that goes into creating, innovating, and pushing the envelope in this space. We extend our congratulations to the other nominees for ‘Team of the Year’ as well as all the groups and individuals that have been nominated across the other categories.”

The other four teams nominated alongside the Chiefs in the category are Inter Miami CF (MLS), the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA), the Texas Rangers (MLB), and the Vegas Golden Knights (NHL). The Chiefs being honored for their work as a franchise behind the scenes and their on-the-field success helps calm the controversy of the recent NFLPA Report Card grade.

The winner will be announced at a live dinner and awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 22, at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square in New York City.

NFLPA player poll shows room for improvement for Broncos

The Broncos’ new ownership group can likely address many of the team’s poorly-graded areas in the NFLPA’s report card.

Last week, the NFL Players Association released the results from a 2022 poll that asked more than 1,300 players for their anonymous perspectives on their teams and facilities.

The Denver Broncos came in ranked No. 20 out of 32 teams. Players gave a strong grade to the strength coaches (A-), good grades for team travel (B+), the weight room (B+) and training staff (B), but poor grades for the treatment of families (D+) food service/nutrition (D) and the locker room size (D+).

The team’s low family grade was a result of Denver being one of 14 NFL teams that do not have a family room. The club’s low nutrition grade can be attributed to the Broncos being one of just two teams who don’t provide vitamins, according to the NFLPA.

The good news for the low grades is that those areas can be addressed by the club’s new ownership group, and players seem to have confidence in new ownership, per the NFLPA: “The survey results show that 100% of player respondents believe that the new ownership group is willing to invest in upgrading the facilities. One example is the club’s decision to replace the playing surface at the end of last season, despite it being the last home game of the year.”

Denver has pushed back on some of the findings of the poll through a story published by KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. That story noted that the Broncos have a family room at the team’s stadium — but it made no mention of a family room at the training facility where players spend most of the season.

Overall, the team’s grade isn’t bad compared to some clubs (just ask the Jacksonville Jaguars). There is room for improvement, though, and Denver’s new ownership group will likely take steps to address the poorly-graded areas of the team’s operations.

Browns ranked 21st in NFLPA’s free agency report card

The Browns have room for growth.

Every year, the NFLPA releases a free agency report card that grades every NFL team on a variety of categories from weight room facilities, to nutrition and dieting, locker room conditions, strength and training staff, and more. The Cleveland Browns ranked 21st of 32 teams in this report that was released today.

An overview of the report, there were some things to like, and some things that fell way below standard in Berea:

“The Cleveland Browns were ranked 21st in the team guide. The player respondents expressed two major complaints – the first of which is the weight room. It currently takes up about 15 – 20 yards of their indoor practice facility, which the players stated was already small.

The second issue pertained to the locker room, which the players believe is one of the smallest in the league, resulting in many players feeling like they do not have enough personal space.

On a positive note, the team’s training staff and strength coaches are very well liked, and players feel like they add to their overall success. Also, 100% of the locker room believes that owner Jimmy Haslem is willing to invest money into improving the facility.”

The training staff of the Browns received an A, the strength staff received an A+, and the training room received a B+. The locker room and weight room, however, were both given a grade of D+.
