LSU in the Moody Center is up next for Texas basketball

The LSU Tigers are up next for the Longhorns on the court.

The Texas Longhorns basketball team is 7-2 through nine games. Texas faithful are more concerned with the two losses than the seven games they should have won.

The best win of the year came against the Louisville Cardinals who won just four games last season. The Longhorns are 0-2 against ranked opponents with two double digit losses to show for it. The last one was a 86-65 loss to former head coach Shaka Smart and Marquette.

Next up for the team is the LSU Tigers who check in at 5-4 on the season. A familiar face leads the Tiger offensive attack. Former Texas center Will Baker is LSU’s leading scorer averaging 14.1 points per game and shooting just under 54% from the field.

The LSU game is an opportunity for Texas to gain confidence against a big name if nothing else. The Tigers score 72.9 points per contest to the Longhorns’ 79 points per game. Texas shoots at a 48.9% rate from the field to LSU’s 45.9% shooting percentage. The ‘Horns out-rebound and out-assist their opponent among other statistical advantages.

Texas should win the game. The two teams will compete in the Moody Center at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2.

Texas Basketball: Looking at the biggest games of the 2023-24 season

Texas has exciting matchups in basketball heading into the upcoming season.

The Texas basketball season is under a month away. The Longhorns will look to match last season’s terrific results after reaching the regional finals of their bracket.

This team is going to look different. While Dylan Disu, Dillon Mitchell, Tyrese Hunter and Brock Cunningham are among last season’s contributors, more than half of the team’s most integral players from last season are gone.

Oral Roberts guard Max Abmas and Virginia forward Kadin Shedrick stand as the big headliners from the Longhorns’ portal class. After averaging over 21 points and four assists last season, expect Abmas to be a major part of this year’s team.

The Longhorns are going to face several big matchups in the 2023-24 season. Here’s a look at some of the team’s biggest games.

Texas basketball faces a gauntlet of an upcoming schedule

Texas faces one of the nation’s more difficult schedules for the rest of the season.

Texas basketball is sitting pretty 20 games into the season. The No. 10 Longhorns boast a record of 17-3, tied atop a crowded Big 12 Conference leaderboard.

Rodney Terry has done extremely well as the interim head coach going 9-2 thus far. Marcus Carr is leading the Longhorns’ charge, averaging over 17 points per game.

This Texas team has responded to adversity both on and off the court this season but has a monumental challenge in front of them.

Texas’ remaining schedule is amongst the toughest in the nation. Eight of their final 11 games are against teams currently ranked inside the AP Top 25 poll.

There is no question that the Longhorns will be battle-tested entering the NCAA Tournament. The upcoming slate gives Texas’ the opportunity to set itself up for a deep run in March.

Here is a complete look at Texas basketball’s schedule and percent chance to win each game for the rest of the regular season.

PREVIEW: No. 10 Texas basketball faces No. 17 TCU

No. 10 Texas faces No. 17 TCU at 8 pm CT on ESPN2.

The Texas Longhorns have a pivotal basketball game against TCU on Wednesday night. A win would confirm Texas as a Big 12 contender, while a loss would raise questions about the team.

Both teams are 13-2 on the season, with Texas’ only losses coming against Illinois and Kansas State. The second half of the season welcomes college basketball’s toughest gauntlet, the Big 12 conference schedule.

Having lost their head coach, many question the Longhorns ability to contend later in the season. Texas guards will have a statement opportunity against TCU.

For all his team’s struggles, Rodney Terry’s team is still 6-1 and not going away without a fight. After a poor defensive performance against Kansas State, the Longhorns held the Oklahoma State Cowboys to 46 points. Acting fast to adjust and improve is an encouraging trend moving forward.

TCU begins a tough stretch that includes Texas Tech and two tough road trips to Iowa State and West Virginia.

Game Prediction: Texas 70, TCU 62

Everything you need to know to catch the Texas Longhorns basketball team take on the Central Michigan Chippewas

The Texas Longhorns basketball team looks to continue its winning ways as they are set to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas this Saturday. Texas is sporting an 8-1 record and riding high on five straight wins. Though the record looks nice, it hasn’t been enough to rejoin the top-25. Close wins against weak teams don’t inspire much confidence in voters, and that has been reflected in the polls. At this point, Texas just has to keep stringing the wins together and plan on making noise come tournament time.

On Saturday afternoon, the rivalry is renewed on the basketball court as the Texas Longhorns travel to Texas A&M to take on the Aggies. The Longhorns are 7-1 but on the outside looking into the top-25. A win here would extend Texas’ record to 8-1 and make it tougher to keep it unranked. Texas has been led by junior guard Matt Coleman (13.8 points, 4.9 assists per game) with senior Andrew Jones (12.4 ppg) coming off the bench for an offensive spark.

Watch: Former Longhorn Jaxson Hayes viciously posterizes Cheik Diallo

Former Texas Longhorn Jaxson Hayes threw it down with ferocity in the New Orleans Pelicans’ matchup with the Phoenix Suns

Wow, Jaxson Hayes. He really just doesn’t quit. Since his time at Texas up to now, his rookie season in the NBA, Hayes won’t stop putting opponents on posters. His latest victim is Cheik Diallo during the New Orleans Pelicans’ close loss to the Phoenix Suns. Hayes brought his head above the rim and soared to the basket, throwing it down with ferocity – Diallo just happened to be in his way.

Hayes finished the game with 17 points and 5 rebounds in 33 minutes of play. He averaged 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks in his only season at Texas. Check out the demoralizing poster here:

Texas basketball beats UAB 67-57: on to the Aggies

Texas Longhorns basketball beats UAB 67-57: on to the Aggies

On Tuesday night, the Texas Longhorns basketball team improved its’ record to 7-1 with a 10-point win over the UAB Blazers. Texas shot the ball well, rebounding from a disappointing shooting performance against McNeese State over the weekend. Texas barely escaped that game with a 73-71 win and shot only 29% from three and 50% from the free-throw line.

Against the UAB Blazers, the Longhorns corrected that as they went 44% from three and 72.7% from the line. Andrew Jones was the star for Texas, going for 20 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists in 27 minutes. He set his career-high as he hit 6 three-pointers and provided a surge to the Longhorns’ offense.

Up next for Texas is Texas A&M on Sunday. The Aggies are 3-4 coming off a loss against the 2-6 Fairfield Stags. On that topic, if it seems the Longhorns’ schedule is a little softer this year, it’s because it is. Texas currently has two ranked teams on the schedule – No. 2 Kansas and No. 18 Baylor. The out of conference schedule is riddled with teams that don’t project to make the tournament like McNeese State, Central Michigan, and Prairie View.

For Texas to secure a top-6 seed in the tournament, they need to minimize losses to teams like that and come out with at least one upset over Baylor or Kansas.
