Texas wins a rockfight over Kansas State, 62-56

Texas isn’t done yet after a huge win over Kansas State.

The Texas Longhorns (17-9) are still alive in the NCAA Tournament race. It wasn’t pretty nor impressive, but the Longhorns earned a win over the Kansas State Wildcats (15-11) at home.

Texas guard Max Abmas headlined the game reaching 3,000 career points. Much of the Oral Roberts transfer’s points came from elsewhere, but the high scoring guard accomplished the milestone on Monday.

Texas was the first to 50 points with under five minutes left to play. Despite the low scoring output the Longhorns never trailed in the game.

An intentional foul by Kansas State on an airborne Texas forward Chendall Weaver nearly cleared the Longhorns bench late in the contest, but cooler heads prevailed. The cheap foul resulted in a technical and allowed the ‘Horns to further separate.

There’s still plenty of work to do, but Texas is still in the hunt for March Madness. In a must-win game, the Longhorns won. Nevertheless, there’s five games left and head coach Rodney Terry’s squad will need to win two or three more to reach the tournament.

Texas next faces the No. 9 Kansas Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse Saturday at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Kansas State starting forward suspended before Nov. 6 season opener vs USC

This is a very big development before the Kansas State-USC game in Las Vegas.

The Kansas State Wildcats are likely to be without their starting power forward for their season opener against USC on Monday, November 6 in Las Vegas.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin, who started all 36 games for Kansas State last season as a junior, came back for his senior season. He was expected to be a core part of the Wildcats under head coach Jerome Tang.

Now, it appears he won’t play in the Wildcats’ first game of the season, and could be out much longer than that.

Glenn Kinley of Topeka NBC affiliate KSNT reports that Tomlin was arrested early Sunday morning for disorderly conduct. He has subsequently been suspended from the team by Tang, who released a statement to the press on the matter.

Tomlin averaged 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game for Kansas State. The 6-10, 210-pound power forward was a reliable everyday starter who provided rugged interior defense, consistent rebounding, and enough of a presence to keep opponents honest. He complemented KSU’s elite backcourt and helped the Wildcats advance to the Elite Eight in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

USC plays Kansas State Monday night in Las Vegas at 10 p.m. Eastern time, 7 p.m. Pacific, on TNT.

Markquis Nowell tried a Curry-like lookaway 3-pointer on a bad miss during NBA Summer League

Oh no, Markquis Nowell. Not like this!

It wasn’t long ago Markquis Nowell gave us one of the best highlights of March Madness. But he also has a lowlight of NBA Summer League.

Nowell, who pulled off an elite alley-oop pass for Kansas State while talking trash to Hall of Fame guard Isiah Thomas during the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, is an exciting young player. As an undrafted free agent, Nowell signed a two-way deal with the Raptors.

Although he has played well as a distributor for Toronto as one of the leaders in total assists among all rookies in NBA 2K24 Summer League, Nowell has struggled with finding an efficient jumper.

So it was particularly shocking to see him try something like this:

This would have rocked so much if it went in and, yeah, he would have looked like Stephen Curry.

The guard instead looked a bit more like Nick Young, unfortunately, celebrating a 3-pointer on a brick. That’s meme material and you never want to become meme material this early in your career!

Nowell is shooting 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) on 3-pointers for the Raptors and is shooting less than 30.0 percent overall from the field in Las Vegas. So maybe the timing wasn’t right to try to emulate Curry, even if we have to admire the confidence it took for him to try.

Bronny James and USC basketball to debut against Kansas State on Nov. 6

#USC, a team with Final Four aspirations next season, begins its slate against a KSU team which almost made the 2023 Final Four.

The USC Trojans men’s basketball team will generate plenty of headlines with Bronny James and Isaiah Collier in the mix, not to mention the return of Boogie Ellis.

Now, we finally know when Bronny James and the new-look Trojans will make their debut: November 6 in Las Vegas against the Kansas State Wildcats, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

“USC will play Kansas State and Oregon will face Georgia on on Nov. 6th in a doubleheader at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, multiple sources told College Hoops Today. There is no timetable on an official announcement. Tip off times are also TBD.”

Kansas State had a sensational season this past year before falling to Cinderella story Florida Atlantic in the Elite Eight, so this is a massive early-season showdown for the Trojans.

USC’s roster saw a number of departures, with Drew Peterson heading for pros and Reese Dixon-Waters among the transfers as he went to San Diego State.

On that same day, Georgia and Oregon will face off, so two Pac-12 teams playing in the same arena in Las Vegas to open up the season should be fun to see. Bronny James’ debut, in Las Vegas, should have plenty of people making their way to Sin City.

Report: Oral Roberts G Max Abmas to visit Texas on Wednesday

One of the top rated players in the transfer portal is visiting Rodney Terry and Texas.

One of the top rated players in the transfer portal is visiting Rodney Terry and Texas this week. Jeff Goodman reports Oral Roberts transfer Max Abmas is going to check out the Texas basketball program.

Abmas is a high-impact scorer. He’s totaled over 2,500 career points, averaging over 20 points per game in his last three seasons at Oral Roberts. He has four years of college basketball experience, including spearheading a Sweet 16 run in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Texas has been quiet on the transfer portal front so far this offseason. The Longhorns have missed a few key targets and watched Arterio Morris and Rowan Brumbaugh head out the door.

Abmas would be a huge piece of the puzzle for Texas basketball in 2023. The Longhorns replace guards Marcus Carr, Sir’Jabari Rice and await Tyrese Hunter’s NBA Draft status.

Jerome Tang and Kansas State are a factor, but Texas looks to make a strong impression on Abmas’ visit.

Texas and Kansas State in the mix for Oral Roberts transfer Max Abmas

It could be a two-team race for star transfer Max Abmas.

It could be a two-team race for star transfer Max Abmas. Texas and Kansas State continue their pursuit of the Oral Roberts standout.

Abmas is one of the top scorers in the transfer portal to date. He has scored over 2,500 points at the college level, averaging over 21 points per game in each of the last three seasons.

He was the star of Oral Roberts’ Cinderella run in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles entered as a No. 15 seed before upsetting Ohio State and Florida on the way to the Sweet Sixteen. Abmas helped lead ORU back to March Madness this season, winning 30 games in the process.

247Sports ranks Abmas as the No. 3 overall player available in the transfer portal.

Texas has been on the bad side of the transfer portal thus far, losing Arterio Morris and Rowan Brumbaugh in the last week. Abmas could be the first domino to fall in favor of Rodney Terry and the Longhorns this offseason.

Kansas State’s Markquis Nowell had one of the best men’s NCAA tournaments ever

Kansas State’s Markquis Nowell had one of the best men’s NCAA tournament runs ever.

Even though Kansas State couldn’t quite get past Florida Atlantic in the Elite Eight, Wildcats senior guard Markquis Nowell had one of the best men’s NCAA tournaments of any player ever.

After Nowell’s historic Sweet 16 performance against Michigan State, he continued that stellar play in the Elite Eight.

It was special to watch him bank an incredible 3-pointer while falling on a hobbled ankle Ā or see him execute that stunning sequence where people thought he pulled off a fake argument with coach Jerome Tang to set up a basket.

Nowell actually finished his 2023 men’s NCAA tournament as the only player in men’s college basketball history to record 80-plus points, 50-plus assists and 10-plus steals.

You can see how he tallied up all these points, assists and steals in four games below.

Nowell also joined some fantastic company with his tournament performance.

Nowell showed his appreciation for all the support his team had garnered during their impressive men’s NCAA tournament run.

His brother, Marcus Nowell, talked about why he was so proud of his sibling after his incredible March Madness run.

Nowell’s basketball future is uncertain, but it feels like he’ll get a chance at some level to prove himself at the professional level. After this stunning tournament run, he deserves it.

Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang showed serious class by encouraging FAU after his teamā€™s loss

Now this was a classy move by Kansas State coach Jerome Tang.

Kansas State men’s basketball coach Jerome Tang didn’t let an Elite Eight loss to Florida Atlantic keep him from showing some real class.

After the Wildcats fell to the Owls on Saturday, 79-76, Tang visited the FAU locker room and offered words of encouragement for the Owls as they celebrated their first Final Four appearance.

“Nobody can beat y’all,” a supportive Tang told FAU after Saturday night’s game. “Just stay together. Don’t get distracted between now and then, alright? Stay locked in. Keep doing what you’re doing. Y’all the toughest son of a guns we’ve played all year long.”

That’s just the epitome of classiness.

Tang has been one of the best stories during the 2023 men’s NCAA tournament, and his Kansas State came awful close to punching a ticket to this year’s Final Four.

Most coaches don’t go to congratulate the opposing locker room and offer them support as they advance in the tournament, but that’s exactly what Tang did.

You just hope he’ll be back next year because March Madness just won’t be the same without him if he’s not.

FAU trolled Kansas State by playing the Wildcats’ pregame playlist during Elite Eight locker room celebration

Florida Atlantic got some incredible trolling in on Kansas State after its Elite Eight win.

The Florida Atlantic Owls didn’t let beating Kansas State in the Elite Eight keep them from getting a little trolling in after the game.

After FAU topped Kansas State for a spot in the Final Four, 79-76, a video showed the team dancing and clapping along to rap artist Lil Baby in the locker room.

It was a way to poke fun at Kansas State’s pregame tradition of getting hyped by clapping along to Lil Baby’s song “Low Down.”Ā In today’s social media age, it’s impossible for traditions like that not to go viral.

It’s also hard to avoid some playful trolling when you’re playing a team with that tradition, which is what FAU capitalized on after Saturday’s win.

FAU will now prepare to compete as only the third No. 9 seed in men’s NCAA tournament history to make the Final Four.

Can the Owls continue to shock the world during this March Madness? Time will certainly tell.
