Report: Patriots sign WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey to 1-year deal

New England should have fierce competition at the receiver position in 2022.

The New England Patriots are signing receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey to a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Ian Rapoport.

Humphrey (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) played for the Saints for the last three seasons after going undrafted in 2019. He had his most productive season in 2021 when he logged 13 catches for 249 yards and two touchdowns.

Humphrey joins a deep group of receivers — which makes the move somewhat surprising. The Patriots currently have Kendrick Bourne, Nelson Agholor, Jakobi Meyers, DeVante Parker, Tyquan Thornton, Tre Nixon, N’Keal Harry, Kristian Wilkerson, Ty Montgomery and Malcolm Perry.

Lil’Jordan Humphrey re-signing with the Saints for 2022

The Saints are re-signing restricted free agent Lil’Jordan Humphrey, adding more competition at wide receiver for 2022:

The New Orleans Saints are re-signing wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey for the 2022 season, as first reported by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Humphrey was the last restricted free agent for the Saints to make a move on this offseason, having previously issued one-year contract tenders to wide receiver Deonte Harty and defensive tackle Shy Tuttle while re-signing offensive lineman Ethan Greenidge and choosing to move on from tight end Garrett Griffin and kicker Brett Maher.

Humphrey returns to add more competition in the receiving corps for training camp; he’s struggled with injuries in the NFL, totaling 16 receptions in 18 games played. He’s picked up 295 receiving yards with 3 touchdown catches with New Orleans since signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Texas. Look for him to compete for a roster spot with other reserves like Kevin White, Kawaan Baker, Easop Winston Jr., Jalen McCleskey, and Kirk Merritt.

Watch: Taysom Hill sends 24-yard TD pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey, and Saints finally score a PAT

Bang: an injury to his throwing hand wasn’t enough to slow Taysom Hill down, with the New Orleans Saints quarterback lobbing a 24-yard pass to wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey for an all-too-easy touchdown reception. And, wouldn’t you know it, Brett Maher nailed the extra-point attempt to set up a tied game early in the second quarter. It’s about time.

Humphrey was a surprising source of big plays early on against Dallas, also reeling in a 25-yard grab-and-go earlier in the game to help set up a long field goal try (which, regrettably, sailed wide right of the goalposts). And the 49 combined receiving yards he put together on those two catches were already a new career-high. The Saints receiving corps has been a big letdown this season, but more bright moments like this from Humphrey will do a lot to rebuild confidence in the unit moving forwards.

Longhorns in NFL: Lil’Jordan Humphrey bodies a defender for Saints touchdown

Humphrey mossed this Eagles defender for a touchdown.

It was a good day to be a former Texas receiver in the NFL on Sunday, as multiple Longhorns reeled in some big touchdown catches.

Former Olympian and Longhorn receiver, Marquise Goodwin, hauled in an impressive 49-yard touchdown catch that would give the Chicago Bears the go-ahead score. It would prove not to be enough as the Baltimore Ravens would answer with a score of their own to win the game.

Goodwin wasn’t the lone former Longhorn to score, as more recent Texas star Lil’Jordan Humphrey hauled in a great catch in the New Orleans Saints matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

With the Saints trailing by 18, they were able to drive down the field one last time with less than a minute remaining in the game. Quarterback Trevor Siemian fired a nice pass that only Humphrey could go up and get.

Humphrey was on the right end on many of these catches during his time as a Longhorn, and is hoping to find more chances like this while on the Saints. The touchdown grab gives him just his second catch of the season, bringing his receiving yards total to 31 with one touchdown.

The Saints and Humphrey will look to bounce back from the 40-29 loss when they host the Buffalo Bills next week.

Two Longhorns named semifinalists for Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award

Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy named Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award semifinalists.

The Longhorns have not lived up to expectations this season, but sophomore running back Bijan Robinson and freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy have been bright spots.

Robinson and Worthy’s seasons are not going unrecognized as they were named semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award on Thursday.

On their website, the Earl Campbell Award explains their mission:

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

The award is reserved for players that played high school or college football in the state of Texas.

Robinson and Worthy join a strong list of Longhorns previously named semifinalists:

  • QB Sam Ehlinger (2018, 2019, 2020)
  • WR Devin Duvernay (2019)
  • WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey (2018)
  • RB D’Onta Foreman (2016)
  • RB Johnathan Gray (2013)

The finalists will be announced on Dec. 14, 2021.

Two members of the New Orleans Saints tested positive for COVID-19 and were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday: cornerback Ken Crawley and wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey. The team did not practice on Wednesday but did recently return from traveling for Monday night’s game with the Seattle Seahawks, so it’s unclear which if any others may be close contacts.

Crawley was designated to return from the injured reserve list last week, allowing him to return to practice, while Humphrey has been a healthy scratch in Weeks 3, 4, and 5. He played a combined 17 snaps on offense and special teams against Seattle.

Hopefully both players are not experiencing any serious symptoms and can return to the team soon. The Saints have achieved one of the highest vaccination rates of NFL teams among their players, while every member of the coaching and support staffs have been vaccinated against the coronavirus. We’ll keep an eye out for developments on this front.

Kenny Stills promoted to Saints’ 53-man roster; latest moves for Week 5

Breaking down the roster moves made by the Saints ahead of Sunday’s matchup with Washington:

The New Orleans Saints completed a couple of final tweaks to their roster before flying out for Sunday’s game with the Washington Football Team. Here’s what you need to know from Saturday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire:

What would an NFL offense look like comprised of only Texas Longhorns?

The Texas Longhorns have produced a plethora of offensive talent over the years. So what would an offense of only Longhorns look like?

The Texas Longhorns have provided plenty of NFL talent over the years, but a large portion of that talent came during the Mack Brown era. It wasn’t just Brown that produced NFL talent, as the first Longhorn ever drafted dates all the way back to 1938 when Hugh Wolfe was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round.  Other big names include Bobby Layne, Tom Landry, Tommy Nobis, Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Vince Young and many more.

Manny Rubio-USA TODAY Sports

Given the amount of Longhorns that have made the jump to the NFL and AFL, we were curious what an offense of former Texas players would look like in the NFL today. We used players from the XFL as well to fill out the starters. So let’s get started with the quarterback.
