49ers roster moves: Veteran CB signed, undrafted DB waived

The #49ers made a couple roster moves, including the addition of a veteran CB to help their ailing secondary.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a pair of roster moves. They added veteran cornerback Ken Crawley, and in a corresponding move waived/injured undrafted safety Leon O’Neal.

Crawley will give the 49ers some much-needed depth in their secondary with CBs Emmanuel Moseley and Charvarius Ward both dealing with injuries.

The Saints originally signed Crawley as an undrafted free agent after the 2016 draft. He debuted for the club that year when he played in 15 games with five starts. Crawley started all 13 games he played in 2017, then started five of his 10 games the following year. There was a brief stint in Miami in 2019 after the Saints waived him, then he wound up back with the Saints for 2020 and 2021.

In his career Crawley has played in 55 games with 25 starts. He has two interceptions and 32 pass breakups.

O’Neal signed with the 49ers after this year’s draft. The Texas A&M product had a pre-draft visit with San Francisco, but a crowded safety room was going to make it hard for him to nose his way into a role. An injury designation means he’ll revert to the 49ers’ Injured Reserve if he isn’t claimed off waivers.

49ers announce they’ve signed former Saints cornerback Ken Crawley

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have signed former New Orleans Saints cornerback Ken Crawley:

He’s back: former New Orleans Saints cornerback Ken Crawley signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday, the team announced, as a corresponding move with safety Leon O’Neal Jr. going to injured reserve. San Francisco needs more defensive backs ahead of the preseason, and Crawley ended up signing with them after trying out for the Baltimore Ravens earlier this week.

Crawley has appeared sporadically in New Orleans’ lineup since his debut in the 2016 season, having signed with them as an undrafted rookie out of Colorado, averaging 507 defensive snaps through his first three years with the team as a part-time starter. He’s only totaled 98 snaps on special teams against just 27 reps with the defense over the last three years with the Saints improving their depth in the secondary, steadily pushing him further down the depth chart. Good for him on earning this opportunity to continue his NFL career.

Ravens bring in three CBs for tryouts

The Ravens brought in three cornerbacks for tryouts

The Baltimore Ravens went through many different injuries during the 2021 season. One of the positions that was hit the hardest for the team was at cornerback, so the team made sure to improve their depth over the course of the 2022 offseason by signing free agents and drafting prospects that can make an impact both now and in the future.

On Sunday, news came out that Baltimore had tried out three cornerbacks in Ken Crawley, Darryl Roberts and Daryl Worley. The team could look to add one of the three for extra defensive back depth, especially for training camp and the preseason.

Worley, a six-year veteran, has played for eight different NFL teams, which includes a stint with the Ravens during the 2021 season. Worley was signed to the team’s practice squad in December, and in one game with Baltimore notched five combined tackles.

Roberts, another six-year veteran, is also another well-traveled defensive back. Roberts has played for seven NFL teams, most recently with the Washington Commanders. Roberts has notched 223 combined tackles, four interceptions and one fumble recovery in 73 games played.

Crawley, a six-year veteran, has spent most of his time as a defensive back with the New Orleans Saints. He’s also spent time with the Miami Dolphins, and has totaled 138 combined tackles, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble in his career.

Updated Saints cornerbacks depth chart after Bradley Roby extension

Updated Saints cornerback depth chart after Bradley Roby extension, via @KadeKistner:

The New Orleans Saints extended their contract with cornerback Bradley Roby just hours after losing safety Marcus Williams in free agency to the Baltimore Ravens, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, helping to maintain depth at a talent-rich position behind starting corners Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo.

Now that we know Roby’s in the plans for 2022, we can take a look at what the Saints’ depth chart at cornerback looks like at this stage. It could change quickly in a potential trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson by the end of the day. If the Saints move one of their young cornerbacks, here are their other options under contract:

Tuesday’s update to the New Orleans Saints injury report included a couple of roster moves, with two young players going on injured reserve: tight end Adam Trautman, recovering from a knee injury, and left tackle Landon Young, who is expected to undergo season-ending foot surgery.

And a couple of players who were let go last week in wide receiver Kevin White and cornerback Ken Crawley. Let’s run through the list:

Two members of the New Orleans Saints tested positive for COVID-19 and were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday: cornerback Ken Crawley and wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey. The team did not practice on Wednesday but did recently return from traveling for Monday night’s game with the Seattle Seahawks, so it’s unclear which if any others may be close contacts.

Crawley was designated to return from the injured reserve list last week, allowing him to return to practice, while Humphrey has been a healthy scratch in Weeks 3, 4, and 5. He played a combined 17 snaps on offense and special teams against Seattle.

Hopefully both players are not experiencing any serious symptoms and can return to the team soon. The Saints have achieved one of the highest vaccination rates of NFL teams among their players, while every member of the coaching and support staffs have been vaccinated against the coronavirus. We’ll keep an eye out for developments on this front.

More help is on the way for the New Orleans Saints with three more players designated to return from injured reserve on Thursday, all of whom practiced with their teammates for the first time in weeks. Saints head coach Sean Payton said this was coming during his morning media availability session, and now we know exactly which players are working their way back.

While there’s a chance they could play on Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks, that shouldn’t be our expectation. Designating them to return only opens a window in which they can practice. If they’re able to play so soon, get excited. But don’t expect that and then feel let down.

New Orleans previously designated a list of starters including kicker Wil Lutz, linebacker Kwon Alexander, defensive end Marcus Davenport, and wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith to come back from injuries. Here’s who joined them:

He declined to name any names, but New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton ended his Thursday press conference with some optimism by confirming what we’ve expected: more players will be coming off of the injured reserve list after Pro Bowl kicker Wil Lutz, linebacker Kwon Alexander, defensive end Marcus Davenport, and wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith were designated to return earlier this week.

Players eligible to return from injured reserve include tight end Nick Vannett, cornerback Ken Crawley, and linebacker Chase Hansen. But they’ve all been eligible to return for some time now; that’s not the same thing as being healthy enough to receive the designation. Don’t forget that starting offensive linemen Terron Armstead and Erik McCoy never went to injured reserve in the first place, so they can practice and play as soon as they’re healthy.

When asked specifically about All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas, who spent the first six weeks on the physically unable to perform list, Payton only offered a quick “We’ll have to see how it goes,” per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

It doesn’t mean all of these players will be able to play on Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks. But they will be cleared to join their teammates in practice and at least try to get the green light to suit up. It’s a big step (really a series of big steps) in the right direction. Stay tuned for official news from the team on Thursday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire.
