Happy Birthday Ray Zellars!

Happy birthday Ray!

Birthday wishes go out to former Notre Dame running back Ray Zellars today.

Zellars spent from 1991-1994 in Notre Dame’s backfield, getting the vast majority of his playing time as a junior and senior.  He totaled 1,135 career rush yards and nine touchdowns at Notre Dame.

The most memorable of those nine scores came in his senior year against Purdue as his run is still talked about in certain circles.

Heck, one of our staffers here at Fighting Irish Wire called it his favorite Notre Dame play of all-time.  If you haven’t seen it before or would just like to watch it again (who wouldn’t?) then check out below.

The Pittsburgh product would go on to spend four years in the NFL, rushing for 11 career touchdowns between stops in New Orleans and Cincinnati.

Happy birthday Ray!

WATCH: Alvin Kamara scores his second TD of the day after big run

WATCH: Alvin Kamara scores his second TD of the day after big run

Alvin Kamara is getting it done in different ways for the Saints offense, finding the endzone for the second time today against the Indianapolis Colts. After a receiving touchdown earlier, Kamara took the ball 16 yards on the ground for this score.

After failing so often in the red zone this season, the Saints have found some rhythm on offense. This by far has been the best that the offense has looked on pretty much every level this season. A much needed confidence boost for the group led by Derek Carr.

This is also the first multi-touchdown game for Kamara since Week 8 last year against the Las Vegas Raiders. Kamara is up to three touchdowns in five games on the season after missing the first three games to suspension.

Notre Dame stuns upset minded Duke: Instant Reactions

How you feeling, Irish fans?!?!

My goodness.

There is so much to take away from Notre Dame’s near-disaster at Duke that it could take me three days to honestly write all of my thoughts out.

So there is a ton coming here but at the end of the day it’s a victory.  Remember that tonight and enjoy it.

However.

And there are lots and lots of howevers.

There is a lot to take away from this game and we’re going to do it the rest of the weekend but let’s not waste any time.

Instant takeaways from Notre Dame’s stunning 21-14 win at Duke start here:

WATCH: Chiefs RB La’Mical Perine rips off long run vs. Browns

#Chiefs RB La’Mical Perine ripped off this big run to help Kansas City’s offense get on track against the #Browns.

La’Mical Perine has quietly put together an exceptional preseason resume with the Kansas City Chiefs in August and might be the front-runner to land a spot as the team’s fourth running back ahead of September’s regular season kickoff.

He ripped off an exceptional run in the first quarter of Kansas City’s preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns, gaining 30 yards to help the Chiefs offense get back on track after going down by 19 points early in the game.

This play could go a long way toward helping the Chiefs come back from the three-score deficit in the second quarter and may help build momentum for Kansas City before halftime.

While it won’t count toward his regular-season stats, efforts like this are a great sign for the Chiefs’ backfield as the team’s coaching staff assesses their options for the 2023 campaign. Though Perine isn’t a household name at this point in his career, he’ll have a chance to contribute to the NFL’s most feared offense if he earns a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster.

WATCH: Chiefs WR Skyy Moore takes end-around run at training camp

Skyy Moore was heavily involved in the #Chiefs’ Wednesday practice session and made one particularly impressive run on an end-around play.

After seeing action in the wildcat formation at Kansas City Chiefs training camp last week wide receiver Skyy Moore got involved in more trickery at the team’s Wednesday practice session.

He was called on to take an end-around rushing attempt after a Patrick Mahomes handoff to Jerick McKinnon, who then gave the ball to Moore as he worked against the grain to fool the Chiefs’ defense.

Kansas City Sports Network got a great view of the deceptive play and posted a video of the unorthodox run to social media.

Moore’s involvement in plays like this is becoming a common theme at Chiefs workouts and could portend a new role for him as a gadget player in Kansas City’s offense next season. He will have to fight for as many snaps as he can get at his true position, so his usage on trick plays could prove crucial to his efficacy as a starter in Andy Reid’s system.

WATCH: Alvin Kamara sheds 5 tackles, sprints 52 yards for a TD

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara dodged tackles from five different Green Bay Packers defenders on his catch-and-run touchdown score.

Don’t blink, or you’ll miss him. That’s what the entire Green Bay Packers defense learned when New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara caught a pass from Drew Brees around midfield before cutting past all 11 defenders for a score.

But that’s really, really simplifying it. The play has to be seen to be believed.

Kamara went streaking down the sideline following his blockers, including center Erik McCoy — who initially looked surprised to find himself and Kamara alone with so much space ahead of them to run through. And when the Packers defense did close in, Kamara bobbed and weaved between them with his usual unique ease.

It’s incredibly impressive. And it tied the game for the Saints and Packers at 27-27.

Guard Damien Lewis says he can ‘maul guys’ in run and pass protection

Seattle Seahawks rookie guard Damien Lewis says he can “maul guys” in both run and pass protection and can do whatever is asked of him.

The Seattle Seahawks’ offensive line was a unit in need of reinforcement following the 2019 season, and Pete Carroll and John Schneider have attempted to address it by selecting LSU guard Damien Lewis in the third round in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Lewis told 710 ESPN Seattle that the Seahawks’ selection of him was quite an emotional moment.

“I just froze,” Lewis said. “That moment right there, everything just froze, everything just stopped. My mom, she was crying, she was tapping on me. So I just zoom out; thought about where I come from.”

“That right there really just something that I’ll never forget, that phone call,” Lewis continued. “Just really laid on my heart. Coach Pete told me he wanted me to come to play and I told him I’d give it my all. From day one to come up there and earn everything; I don’t want nothing given to me. Come up there and compete . . . I’m a winner. This is what I do, I love to win. And I’m gonna come in, bring the same thing: mean, tough and nasty.”

Lewis also expressed confidence in his abilities to do whatever is asked of him on the field.

“I’m just a mean, tough and nasty guy who can do it all,” Lewis said. “Maul guys in the run, maul guys in the pass, just come in and just lay it out every play, every snap, just gonna give it my all.”

With the release of Justin Britt and the departure of DJ Fluker, Seattle’s offensive line desperately needs contributors. Lewis will hopefully do enough to fill the void in his rookie season.

Olympic runner prematurely celebrates near finish line, blows race and chance at record

It’s not uncharacteristic for an elite runner to begin celebrating while nearing the finish line following a hard-fought race. But it’s a big no-no to do so when a challenger is close behind and a new race course record is on the line.
