Notre Dame Football: It’s Safe to Say Brian Kelly Disagrees with Kirk Herbstreit

Thursday saw Brian Kelly make an appearance on the SportsBeat on 96.1 FM in South Bend and the Notre Dame football coach was asked about Herbstreit’s comments.  Let’s just say – it’s safe to believe he doesn’t so much agree with the ESPN analyst.

Last week Kirk Herbstreit was on ESPN Radio and was asked his thoughts on the chances of football, pro or college being played as we know it this fall.  Herbstreit offered is opinion and it didn’t come with much optimism.

Listen, I hope like all getup that Kelly is right and that college football goes off without a hitch in 2020.  I do however also think it’s a bit wrong to go after Herbstreit this hard for answering the question he was asked.

Look at New York City, look at Florida largely shutting down the state today and look how big everything involving Corona-virus has become.  Now do you think it’s a two foot putt that college football will operate as normal with 80,000 or so fans packing stadiums all over the country?

Herbstreit is an educated man who happens to cover college football and usually does a very good job of that.  Just because his profession is in sports doesn’t mean he isn’t informed enough to think logically on his own.  I get why Kelly is upset but it doesn’t take a scientist or doctor to figure out that there is a growing chance that Herbstreit is right.

The city of Toronto has shutdown regular operations until at least June 1.  Kelly goes on to say that ideally, workouts would begin by the middle of June in order to get things timed out perfectly for college football.  He already stated previously with Scott Van Pelt of SportsCenter that July 1 would be the necessary date to get things going by in order for a regular season schedule to be played.

Again, I can’t put into words how much I hope Herbstreit is wrong.  It’d mean good news for a nation and a world that could use some right now and it’d mean that we’ve largely beat a pandemic nationwide.  I hope and pray for that to be the case, but again, I’d be lying if I said I was optimistic in it happening.

We’ll post a link to the entire Brian Kelly interview once it gets posted to their website.  We’ll also look at what else the Notre Dame head coach had to say in a later post so be on the lookout for that this evening.  Stay safe and have a good night. -NS

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit:”I’ll be shocked if we have football this fall”

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit shared with TMZ that he’d be shocked if we saw any NFL or College Football game this fall.

There’s no doubt that the coronavirus has taken the world by surprise and storm as daily routines have had to change for people all over the world. Jobs have been closed, sports have been cancelled, and many people are in quarantine. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit shared with TMZ that he’d be shocked if we saw any NFL or College Football game this fall.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit will shocked if there are NFL games this fall

Kirk Herbstreit weighed in with an opinion that he doesn’t think there will be NFL games this fall.

Kirk Herbstreit is a college football guy. ESPN’s top analyst is weighing in on the next level in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

He checked in on the ESPN radio network via a TMZ pickup and dropped this:

Kirk Herbstreit anticipating no college football, NFL in 2020

ESPN College Football analyst Kirk Herbtreit isn’t optimistic about the 2020 college football and NFL seasons due to the coronavirus

ESPN College Football analyst Kirk Herbtreit isn’t optimistic about the 2020 college football and NFL seasons. In fact, Herbstreit is projecting there to be no football for the upcoming season.

Due to concerns over the timeline of the coronavirus vaccine, which is projected to take several more months, Herbstreit thinks the 2020 season will not be played. The coronavirus is not slowing down at this point in time for the United States.

Additionally, there’s concern surrounding the massive amount of social interaction in football games themselves and throughout the stadium. Sporting events throughout the world have been cancelled for the time being, but how long will this last? That’s an unanswerable question at the moment.

For now, Herbstreit is doubtful about the upcoming football season. “I’ll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I’ll be so surprised if that happens,” Kirk Herbstreit said on ESPN Radio.

College football fans throughout the country would miss College Gameday if the 2020 season should be cancelled. Georgia Bulldog and college football fans need to sit tight and take care of themselves. That’s arguably the best hope for college football and NFL football in 2020.

College Football in 2020? ESPN Analyst Not Optimistic

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit is as respected of college football mind as you’ll find. If he’s not optimistic about football in 2020, either am I.

We never thought the NCAA Tournament could be canceled but it was.

We never thought the NBA, NHL or MLB would delay their seasons, but they have.

We didn’t think The Masters, US Open, Kentucky Derby or Indianapolis 500 would either, but they all pushed back their events as well.

Now what about college football?

TMZ reports that ESPN College Gameday’s Kirk Herbstreit had the following to say about that Friday morning on ESPN Radio:

“I’ll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I’ll be so surprised if that happens. Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you’re 12 to 18 months from a [coronavirus] vaccine. I don’t know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don’t know how you can do it with the optics of it.”

I remain hopeful I am not the most optimistic about it going off the last weekend of August like we’d all hope.  There are just too many plates spinning right now for me to think the crises like you see in New York and breaking out in Louisiana will just be solved quickly.

There is time, no doubt but I’d be lying if I said I was feeling better about the chances of college football being played in 2020 and Herbstreit sharing this today only further dampens things for me.

Kirk Herbstreit: Football in fall should be postponed due to COVID-19

The prominent color commentator and college football analyst doesn’t think or believe that we will or should have football this fall.

As we continue without sports in the heart of what should be March Madness, the great reprieve that many in the country are looking to is the eventual return of football.

But what if that doesn’t happen? At least not this year?

One prominent voice in college football not only thinks it won’t, but also that it shouldn’t.

Appearing on ESPN radio, as chronicled by TMZ, College GameDay host and ABC’s lead color commentator Kirk Herbstreit doesn’t anticipate that we’ll be past our coronavirus concerns once the season rolls along. Not only that, he thinks action should be taken now, rather than waiting and seeing.

[lawrence-related id=22884,22867,22862]

While football season either being postponed or canceled isn’t outside of the realm of possibility, we do think it’s too soon to make such a judgment. We don’t yet know how effective the current shelter-in-place provisions are helping the case, and if testing for COVID-19 was able to reach a critical mass come preseason time, there’s no reason why the outbreak can’t be contained.

However, if there is to be a football season, it’s critical that the actions taken now are followed and that if we do get bad news — as many anticipate — once the various quarantine timelines have come to their current ends, that we continue to follow protocols as set by the CDC and leading experts and epidemiologists such as Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit congratulates David Pollack on CFB Hall of Fame induction

ESPN’s College GameDay’s Kirk Herbstreit congratulates Georgia football great David Pollack on being inducted to the 2020 CFB HOF class

A co-worker, but more so a good friend.

Kirk Herbstreit, who hosts ESPN’s College GameDay, congratulated his co-worker David Pollack on Wednesday after the news broke that Pollack will be inducted into the 2020 College Football Hall of Fame class.

Pollack had an illustrious career in Athens, earning the honor of being one of two players in UGA history to be a three time first team All-American.

The two have been on the program together since 2011 when Pollack joined the GameDay crew. Those who watch the show know these two go together like bread and butter on TV.

High praise from the Ohio State Buckeye alum as Pollack will be forever ingrained in College Football History.

Notre Dame Football: Kirk Herbstreit Weighs in on Tommy Rees Promotion

Now one of the biggest names in College Football media has weighed in on the Rees promotion as Kirk Herbstreit shared his thoughts on Twitter Monday morning.

Yesterday’s news didn’t come as much of a surprise to Notre Dame football fans but it was news nonetheless as Tommy Rees was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.

One of the first to endorse the move was Notre Dame legend and two-time All-Pro offensive guard for the Indianpolis Colts, Quenton Nelson, who spoke up the former Fighting Irish quarterback.

Now one of the biggest names in College Football media has weighed in on the Rees promotion as Kirk Herbstreit shared his thoughts on Twitter Monday morning.

Herbstriet says that players will love playing for him, a sentiment that has been echoed by several former Notre Dame players on Twitter over the last 24 hours.

Let’s hope that beyond players loving him, that points are scored with regularity against the toughest opponents in 2020 unlike over the last two seasons.

Kirk Herbstreit “didn’t agree with” overturned fumble in Fiesta Bowl

Some believe Ohio State was cheated in the Fiesta Bowl, and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit agrees “the call” shouldn’t have been overturned.

The Ohio State football team lost 29-23 to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl Saturday night (as if we have to remind you). It was brutal, and there were two distinct and impactful moments the officials had a hand in that will forever live in the minds of Ohio State fans.

The first was the Shaun Wade targeting call, taking the team’s third-best cornerback out of the game permanently. That rule in general needs to be changed as Wade clearly wasn’t aiming to put a vicious hit on Trevor Lawrence.

Then, what I’ll just go ahead and dub “the call” happened. While many disagree with the decision to overturn the fumble and ensuing touchdown, the refs left their mark on the game yet again.

It was a brutal reality for Ohio State fans who thought the Buckeyes had wrestled the lead back in the team’s most important game of the season. However, the call was overturned, shocking the world — and maybe the entire Milky Way Galaxy too.

Let’s just say former Ohio State alum and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, who keeps his opinions on the Buckeyes extremely fair and neutral, didn’t agree with the call.

Herbstreit, who “didn’t agree with (the call) at all,” knew that just one decision didn’t force the game Clemson’s way. After all, Ohio State’s dynamic offense did settle for three first-half field goals.

The Buckeyes were on the wrong end of those two calls, but they needed to be better. Herbstreit knew that, and Ohio State knows that. Needless to say, it doesn’t make anything better for die-hard Buckeye fans.

College Gameday Staff Picks Camping World Bowl

As always, Desmond Howard, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit gave their picks for all the games of the day and Notre Dame taking on Iowa State in the Camping World Bowl got a minute or so of discussion.

The final College Gameday for the year took place this morning in front of an empty University of Phoenix Stadium where Ohio State and Clemson will play for a spot in the national championship game later today.

As always, Desmond Howard, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit gave their picks for all the games of the day and Notre Dame taking on Iowa State in the Camping World Bowl got a minute or so of discussion.

The picks went as follows:

Desmond Howard:  Notre Dame

Lee Corso:  Iowa State

Kirk Herbstreit: Notre Dame

What did Meatloaf say, two out of three ain’t bad?

Something like that anyway.  Enjoy the game!
