Studs and duds from No. 24 Texas’ win over No. 13 Kansas State

Bijan Robinson delivered a Heisman-level performance.

No. 24 Texas keeps its Big 12 title hopes alive with a huge road victory over No. 13 Kansas State.

The Longhorns held on to a second-half lead for a change, recovering a late Adrian Martinez fumble to hold on 34-27.

Bijan Robinson ran wild to pace Texas’ offense. He finished with 209 rushing yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. The Heisman hopeful continues to prove himself as one of the best players in the nation.

Quinn Ewers enjoyed a bounce-back performance in the win. Despite missing a few deep shots, he found Xavier Worthy for two scores in the first half. Most importantly Ewers did not turn the ball over for the Horns.

Texas survived two costly fumbles by forcing two turnovers of their own. Keandre Coburn’s forced fumble on Kansas State’s final drive sealed the deal.

The victory gives Texas control over its own destiny in the Big 12 title race. It also marks the first ranked win of the season for Steve Sarkisian.

Here is a look at the studs and duds from Texas’ massive win over Kansas State.

Texas DL Keondre Coburn discusses Gary Patterson’s early impact

Patterson is already proving to be a great addition to the staff.

Although it was only the first year of the Steve Sarkisian era at Texas, it was evident that changes needed to be made, and they needed to happen fast.

The team lacked accountability, mental toughness, and it was evident that certain members of the coaching staff likely weren’t a fit. Sarkisian made it a point of emphasis to address all of those issues this offseason, and one of the best acquisitions was bringing in former TCU head coach Gary Patterson.

Patterson’s title with Texas is the special assistant to the head coach, but he has already been very hands on with helping the defense make adjustments. Fifth-year defensive tackle, Keondre Coburn, spoke with 247Sports about how much of an impact Patterson has made throughout his short tenure in Austin thus far.

Just having him here helps (the program) improve and adds more knowledge to the game that find is really important. You’ve got all of these coaches that have got all of this knowledge, you’re just taking lessons from each person. We’re good that we have him here and we’re not worried about him up at TCU.

Coburn also touched on how Patterson has been helping him personally.

He’ll see a play that I didn’t use my hands the right way and he’ll tell me while I’m getting dressed, walking to the TANC, ‘Hey, use your hands this better way.’” “I’m like, ‘OK. I appreciate that, coach.’”

Patterson has also had a chance to show a side of himself that Longhorns players wouldn’t know he had due to the fact he has been a rival all these years.

He’s always being funny and I didn’t know he had energy like that. Think about it: I only knew him as a recruiter when I was a recruit, so the fact that he laughs and plays around and all of that, you really wouldn’t expect from him. It’s cool to have him here.

Patterson’s impact is something that Longhorns fans are hoping to see immediately during the 2022 season, as Texas was statistically one of the worst defenses in the country in 2021.

Three upperclassmen Texas needs a big season from in 2022

These three upperclassmen having a big season will help Texas greatly.

There has been a lot of noise regarding all the new faces that will be Austin in 2022, but in order for Texas to truly thrive, they need some of the more experienced players to have a big season.

Texas will be experiencing a lot of turnover on offense, as their offense ranks  No. 77 in ESPN’s rankings for returning production. This means the few returning players they do have will be asked to step up even more and provide the leadership that this team was lacking in 2021.

The Texas defense has the luxury of having more returning players, as they are returning 74% of their production from 2021. A mark that ranks as No. 37 in the country. However, the defense was not solid by any means and they were statistically one of the worst run defenses in the nation. They couldn’t stop a cold, let alone an opponents running back.

With another offseason in the system to grow on both sides of the ball, it is now very much fair game to expect more from experienced players. Here are some of the veterans Texas will need a big season from in 2022, in order to have a truly successful season.

First, one of Texas’ defensive leaders

Athlon Sports releases 2020 All-Big 12 team

Athlon Sports released their 2020 All-Big 12 team. With four different teams, the Texas Longhorns walked away with 16 total selections.

Athlon Sports has released their 2020 All-Conference teams with the Texas Longhorns have the third-most selections. Oklahoma (18) and Iowa State (17) were the only teams with more than Texas’ 16 selections. Cornerback D’Shawn Jamison was selected three different times by Athlon.

There is absolutely no surprise with Sam Ehlinger leading the charge as the top quarterback in the conference. The senior quarterback will be looking to lead the Longhorns back to the top of the conference and cement his legacy much like Vince Young and Colt McCoy did before him.

Sam Cosmi is viewed as a first round draft pick and fringe top 15 selection. With no question he is the top offensive tackle of the conference and might be the best lineman as well. He will make himself a lot of money with another stellar season in 2020.

Joseph Ossai is listed at linebacker although he will be playing closer to the line of scrimmage at the “Jack” position. Ossai showed just what time of impact he can have in the Valero Alamo Bowl against the Utah Utes. When asked to rush the passer, Ossai can be a disruptive force.

D’Shawn Jamison shows up on the list three different times. Once as a cornerback and twice as a return specialist. Jamison led the team a year ago with three interceptions. He also led the team in kick return and punt return yardage in 2019.
