Deshaun Watson not a top ten QB in Madden 24

Madden has the Browns quarterback ranked middle of the pack after bad 2022

The Madden 24 rankings continue to drop as EA Sports has released the quarterback rankings for this year’s game. After missing nearly two seasons and a rough final six games for the Cleveland Browns franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson, he found himself ranked 16th best at the position.

Some of the names in front of Watson in the rankings were the Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff, the Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray, and the New Orleans Saints’ Derek Carr. Watson still got high ratings for throwing power and agility. All of the backup quarterbacks ranking around the same as each other with none of them standing out from the rest, let’s look at how Madden sees the Browns position group.

1 veteran player on the roster bubble at each position group for the Browns

After overhauling chunks of their roster, which veterans could find themselves on the bubble as training camp nears?

The Cleveland Browns and general manager set out to add talent not only to positions of need but all over their roster this offseason, and may not be done yet. While the microscope is on the defensive tackle room given how abysmal it was a year ago (meaning second-year player Perrion Winfrey will need to lock in this summer), there are now veterans on the roster bubble in every room.

Who else joins Winfrey as veteran roster bubble candidates as the Browns look to get training camp underway in three weeks? Here is one player per position that will be in a fight for a roster spot.

12 former Vikings account for 9th-most dead salary cap space

After moving on from multiple players the last two seasons, the Minnesota Vikings have $31,534,662 in dead cap space.

Maneuvering the salary cap is a difficult exercise. A financial version of Tetris, it required massive amounts of planning and structuring contracts in a way to maximize the puzzle that is conducive to flexibility.

The Minnesota Vikings are currently trying to get back to a great spot with the salary cap as general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah tries to clean up the mistakes made by his predecessor Rick Spielman.

According to Over The Cap, the Vikings have the 9th-most dead salary cap space with $31,534,662 counting toward the 2023 salary cap split between 12 players.

4 Browns change their numbers entering the 2023 season

Four Browns players have changed their look for this season.

After adding a couple of handfuls of talent in free agency, the Cleveland Browns announced the numbers for the newest members of their team. Along with those new players, however, four current players like defensive end Alex Wright have changed their number. Wright announced his number change last week, as new defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson presumably paid the second-year player a pretty penny for the number.

However, three more players changed their numbers as well as they enter the 2023 season. Here are the four players who changed their numbers and what they will now be sporting for the Browns this season.

Texas A&M ranks among the top schools in quarterbacks drafted to the NFL since 2010

Is Texas A&M actually ‘quarterback university?’ Since 2010, the Aggies have been among the top schools in getting their signal-callers drafted by NFL franchises.

Is it time to label Texas A&M as ‘quarterback university,’ aka ‘QBU?’ With the 2023 NFL Draft just around the corner it begs the question of which football program has consistently sent signal-callers to the pros. Over the course of the last decade, the Aggies have been among the top schools of producing NFL talent under center.

According to Pro Football Focus College, Texas A&M has sent three quarterbacks to the NFL through the draft since 2010, which is tied with the likes of Clemson, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and USC. 10 other football programs are tied with the Aggies with three QBs drafted over the last decade.

Only Oklahoma (5) and Alabama (4) are the only two schools to send more signal-callers to the NFL since 2010.

Ryan Tannehill (2012), Johnny Manziel (2014), and Kellen Mond (2021) headline the group of signal-callers to make the jump from College Station over to the NFL.

Tannehill was taken in the first round (8th overall) by the Miami Dolphins, while Johnny Manziel was selected as a first-rounder (22nd overall) by the Cleveland Browns. Mond was taken in the third round with the 66th pick by the Minnesota Vikings.

Mond spent one season with the Vikings, with his lone debut coming in Week 17 of the 2021-22 season in the fourth quarter after starter Kirk Cousins was ruled out with covid. He completed two of three passes for five yards in the 37–10 loss to the Green Bay Packers. After being waved in August 2022, he was claimed off waivers shortly thereafter by the Cleveland Browns.

Manziel’s stint in the NFL was short-lived as he appeared in just 14 games for the Browns while starting in eight of those contests. He finished with 1,675 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions with a passer rating of 74.4. He also added 46 carries for 259 yards and a rushing score.

Tannehill has found the most success in the NFL in large part due to a career resurgence after joining the Tennessee Titans in 2019, which also marked his lone Pro Bowl season. The former Aggie has thrown for 33,265 passing yards, 212 touchdowns, and 108 interceptions with a career passer rating of 91.9.

Since joining the Titans, Tannehill has made the postseason three times over the last four years with his deepest run coming in 2019 after Tennessee made their way to the AFC Championship game. They would eventually fall to the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-24.

Will Kellen Mond be the backup QB in 2023 or will the team explore options?

Will the third-year player be the primary backup next season?

Kellen Mond was claimed by the Cleveland Browns after final roster cuts and would spend the entire regular season on the 53-man roster, and now there is reason to wonder if he is the backup to Deshaun Watson of the future.

This shows you how much the Cleveland Browns valued Mond that he was inactive often yet they protected him and used a roster slot all season as Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs dressed over him. The Minnesota Vikings drafted Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft after a productive career at Texas A&M.

After the regime that drafted Mond changed in 2022 he was waived by the team and joined the Browns on August 31st. Finishing his career at A&M Mond totaled over 9,000 passing yards to go with over 1,500 rushing yards as well.

The path to the backup quarterback in Cleveland seems clear for Mond as he has a similar play style to Deshaun Watson. He is a mobile quarterback who takes care of the football without throwing double digits interceptions in any season in college.

However, Mond struggles with accuracy and decision making so it would be a bad idea to not add more competition. With Watson signed to a big contract it seems like the Browns want to balance out the room with cheap contracts for the backup. In the end, right now Kellen Mond probably has the inside track to the QB2 role in 2023.

Jadeveon Clowney, Demetric Felton lead six inactives vs. Saints

The Browns have announced their six inactives today

As the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints get set for their Christmas Eve showdown, the home team has announced their six inactives in this one. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is not a surprise inactive as he was ruled out with a concussion this week, but both wide receivers Jaelon Darden and Demetric Felton being shelved is a bit odd.

For the Saints, they will be without a handful of starters as wide receivers Chris Olave and Jarvis Landry, cornerback Marshon Lattimore, linebacker Pete Werner, and defensive end Payton Turner will all miss this matchup against the Browns.

Who else was listed as inactive for the Browns? We take a look here.

David Bell out, Jaelon Darden and 5 others listed as inactive vs. Ravens

The Browns have listed wide receivers David Bell and Jaelon Darden among their inactives today against the Ravens.

Dealing with both a toe and thumb injury this week, there was a good chance wide receiver David Bell would not be able to suit up against the Baltimore Ravens. That has now become a reality as he has been listed as inactive, along with fellow wide receiver Jaelon Darden. All-in-all, the Browns again list seven players who will not dress against the Ravens as they look to play spoilers now that their playoff hopes are all but gone.

Here is the full list of those who will not suit up today as the Browns look to get back in the win column against the Ravens.
