Going through the worst video games of 2023 based on Metacritic scores sure is a ride. While you’ve got your usual complaints – too many microtransactions, not enough to do, and things like that – there’s a streak of broken promises and severe pushback against questionable monetization that runs through most of them this year. Kickstarter backers expected more, sports fans got less, and tight publishing schedules meant some games shipped long before they should have. Then there was Activision Blizzard, whose games just did not fare well with consumers this year.

It’s not a pretty task, but we’ve sorted through the rubble and picked out the worst games of 2023 according to Metacritic user scores.

‘Madden NFL 24’ review: Better blocking makes a world of difference

EA Sports made some noticeable improvements to gameplay, which makes Madden 24 the best edition in years

Every year around this time, gamers hold their breath in hopes that EA will actually release an improved version of Madden. Far too often, it feels like the same game with a new title, updated rosters and a fresh coat of paint on the menus.

While “Madden NFL 24” isn’t a massive overhaul or dramatic improvement from last year’s game, it certainly does have a more realistic feel and is more enjoyable to play. Physics are better, blocking is as good as it’s ever been and player animations mirror their real-life counterparts much more closely than they have in years past.

And I’m not just talking about the ability to throw a diving pass with Patrick Mahomes in Madden 24 – which will undoubtedly happen far more often in the videogame than it actually does on Sundays.

But overall, Madden 24 takes a sizable step in the right direction from a gameplay perspective, which means you’re less likely to throw your controller through the TV because the right tackle stayed in his pre-snap stance while watching Nick Bosa plant the quarterback in the turf.

As for the Seahawks, nobody on their roster has a rating over 90.

EA Sports is releasing the latest version of Madden today. This year’s cover athlete is Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who says that he does not believe in the infamously silly yet persistent Madden curse.

One could argue that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes killed the curse back in 2020, but then again it’s not really fair to count Mahomes – or 2020 – in these matters. Rated No. 99 overall in this version, Mahomes continues to dismantle everything we thought we knew about the sport, including the Madden curse. Then again, just because not every person who visits Lake Lanier suffers an accident doesn’t make the place any less haunted – and for good reason.

In any case, Josh Allen is ranked No. 3 at QB this year, rated 94 overall behind Joe Burrow of the Bengals (95) and Mahomes.

As for the Seahawks, nobody on their roster has a rating over 90. Their highest-ranked player is wide receiver Tyler Lockett, who scored an 89. Let’s see how everybody else made out. Here are the full Madden 24 ratings for every Seattle player in this year’s game.

A bizarre Madden 24 glitch leaves players motionless after scoring touchdowns

This is … not great.

Madden NFL 24 is now in the hands of players, and you know what that means: IT’S MADDEN GLITCH SZN BABY!

Through the years, we’ve seen weird bounces that lead to touchdowns, glitches that make scoring easy and an assortment of other bugs.

The one I’ve seen out of this year’s edition? It’s one where a player scores and gets tackled in the end zone … and then they’re motionless. Like, not in an “oh they’re injured” kind of way. They just don’t move, sometimes while their teammates yell at them.

I’m guessing that’s not something the game creators at EA Sports wanted

Madden got Seahawks safety Julian Love right this year

EA has recovered their fumble on Love’s player likeness from last year.

With the release of Madden 24 this week, Seahawks safety Julian Love took to Twitter to evaluate his player replica. A clear improvement in game graphics for this year’s release is expected. However, what wasn’t expected was the stark contrast between Love’s player last year and this year.

One of Seattle’s top free agent signings in 2023, Love played 16 games for the Giants last season, finishing with 67 solo tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble. From the look of things, EA has recovered their own fumble on Love’s player likeness from last year.

Take a look at the difference between the two here:

Love’s overall player rating improved from 76 to 80 and his more refined player model features him with an actual beard, accurate skin pigmentation and game sleeves. Love’s role for Seattle may include coming in on Big Nickel 3-3-5 formation packages and playing as a relief to safeties Jamal Adams (when healthy) and Quandre Diggs. Until Adams returns to the field, Love will be starting next to Diggs.

Tyler Lockett highest rated Seattle player on Madden

Tyler Lockett is the highest rated Seahawks player on Madden 24

Electronic Arts released Madden 24 this week, giving Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett an overall rating of 89, the highest on the team.

Electronic Arts released Madden 24 this week, giving Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett an overall rating of 89, the highest on the team. Lockett’s 87-reception, 1,033 yard, nine touchdown 2022 output was deemed most prevalent for game developers who do diligence in producing NFL player likeness with relative accuracy.

The Seahawks team rating ranks No. 15 amongst the 32 NFL clubs on the game but with live updates provided by XBOX Live and PlayStation Network (PSN) weekly, we may see this team rating improve (or decline) throughout the season.

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Lockett has been with the Seahawks since 2015 and will be a huge mentor to rookie wide-receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Njigba’s Madden rating sits at 78, likely due to his awareness (AWR) attribute being slighted at 70 according to EA.

Contrarily, Lockett’s AWR rating yields a 90. With wide receiver DK Metcalf’s 88 player rating on the game, EA like many NFL analysts believe that the Seahawks are well-equipped at the wideout position. Perhaps adolescents gaming this fall will choose the Seahawks more frequently after they gather intel on how much improved their roster has become.

Whatever the case, below is a “15 things to know before buying” NFL Madden 24 review provided by GamingBolt that will give gamers an idea on what to expect from this years’ release. Check it out below.

Former Alabama football player Madden 24 rankings: Safety

Overall, 76 former Alabama players are in the Madden 24 game. Here’s how the safeties rank.

EA Sports is scheduled to launch Madden 24 on Aug. 18, 2023. The game will feature 76 former Alabama football players. That might be the most players from a single college team in the entire game.

A lot of that has to do with what head coach Nick Saban has been able to do since joining the program in 2006. Saban has transcended the Crimson Tide into a college football powerhouse. In doing so, NFL organizations have noticed and begun to draft some of Alabama’s very own.

With all of the ratings finally revealed, Roll Tide Wire will be taking a look at every positional group that has Alabama players. Today, we feature the safeties.

The most unstoppable NFL player in every modern edition of Madden

These NFL stars were basically cheat codes.

Soon enough, we will have yet another (meagerly) edition of Madden — the popular video game franchise (in dire need of new artistic direction).

But even if the mainline games could desperately use healthier development cycles, Madden itself has become a football institution. Fans who watch all the action every Monday, Thursday, and Sunday often use the latest edition as a way to keep tabs on the season at home. There’s a reason it’s released every August on the eve of another long NFL campaign.

If you’ve played Madden in any capacity before, you understand that some players simply resemble terrifying cheat codes. These are studs who make picking their team in a standard one-on-one “against the rules” in due time.

MORE: Every Madden NFL cover star since 2000.

With Madden 24 now just around the bend, here’s a look at the most unstoppable (and/or most popular) player in every modern edition of the game. Modern, in this case, being circa 1999. Note: There is a heavy skew toward offensive players.

If you wanted better defensive representation, watch the actual games for a fix. No one talks about Madden for defense.

Former Alabama football player Madden 24 rankings: Cornerback

Overall, 76 former Alabama players are in the Madden 24 game. Here’s how the cornerbacks rank.
