Hawkeyes Chalk Talk: How one personnel group can unlock Iowa’s offense in 2023

How can the Hawkeyes unlock their offense in 2023? Here’s the personnel group that can help Iowa do so.

So, now that the talent will be in Iowa City, there are no more excuses. Bluntly put, it is time for the Iowa Hawkeyes’ offense to perform. The transfers of Cade McNamara, Erick All, Seth Anderson, and most recently, Kaleb Brown, have set the stage for an offense desperately searching for answers.

That’s what we are here to look at today. What is a personnel grouping that could unlock this Iowa offense in 2023? Before we get into it, I will give some foundation to where this thought process stems from and why I am comfortable laying it out.

I attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, just a short 45-minute trip east of Iowa City. I played four years of football there as a wide receiver. Now, life wasn’t easy for a 5-foot-9, 185-pound slot receiver that wasn’t the fastest or strongest as you could imagine. Due to that, I had to win with a high football IQ, an understanding of matchups, and quick processing of mathematical advantages (which we will get into later). For example, if a linebacker was on me, that was the time to use my best move. Or if we spread it out and it was a run play, I had to know how to handle a linebacker while giving up quite a bit of size.

Due to experience, countless hours of seeing schemes in film meetings, and studying Iowa’s offense, I believe one personnel grouping could unlock this offense. That is ’12’ personnel.

Let’s get into what ’12’ personnel means and how it could change the Hawkeyes’ offense.

Social media reacts to Iowa Hawkeyes landing Ohio State transfer WR Kaleb Brown

Twitter celebrated as the Iowa Hawkeyes landed a major transfer portal win, adding Ohio State transfer wide receiver Kaleb Brown.

After plenty of groans of frustration throughout last season and this spring regarding the offense, the Iowa Hawkeyes‘ fan base was finally rewarded for its patience.

Iowa has a potential star wide receiver joining via the transfer portal.

Ohio State transfer wide receiver Kaleb Brown announced he is donning the black and gold. The 5-foot-10, 197-pound wide receiver comes to Iowa City after one season in Columbus with the Buckeyes.

A graduate of St. Rita High School out of Chicago, Brown was a consensus four-star signee to the Buckeyes. 247Sports ranked Brown as the nation’s No. 78 player overall, as the No. 13 wide receiver and as the No. 3 player from Illinois in the 2022 class.

Per the 247Sports composite ranking, Brown’s 0.9684 composite score would actually rank the highest for a wide receiver recruit in Iowa history. That mark tops Keenan Davis’ 0.9453 score in the 2009 class and Trey Stross’ 0.9190 score in the 2005 class.

Brown took to Instagram to reveal the good news to Hawkeye fans.

After back-to-back seasons where offense has typically been optional in Iowa City, a wide receiver of Brown’s caliber naturally had Hawkeye fans’ emotions in overdrive.

It also wowed some of the national college football voices. As you’d expect, it drew a wide range of reactions. Here were the best reactions as Iowa fans rejoiced following the addition of a potential superstar in Brown.

Former Ohio State receiver Kaleb Brown to transfer to rival Big Ten school

Is this a surprising destination to you? #GoBucks

Former Ohio State wide receiver Kaleb Brown has found his transfer destination, and it’ll be within the Big Ten conference. Brown announced his transfer destination of Iowa on social media Thursday after entering the transfer portal just a few days ago.

Out of St. Rita High School in Chicago, Brown came to the Buckeyes in the 2022 class as a 4-star prospect. He was ranked as the No. 13 wide receiver and 79th overall player in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. It’s really no surprise that Brown decided to move on with such a loaded and talented receiver corps in Columbus.

Brown was used very sparingly in his freshman campaign last season, catching just one pass for five yards. He’ll now be going to an Iowa team where he should push for playing time immediately. It’ll be an interesting transition for him though because the Hawkeye offense has had issues getting out of its own way the last couple of years.

So when can we expect to see Brown do battle with his old team? Well, we’ll have to wait and see because the expectation is that the Big Ten will do away with divisions and go to a different scheduling format once next year rolls around.

Ohio State WR transfer Kaleb Brown chooses Iowa Hawkeyes

After a visit, talented Ohio State wide receiver transfer Kaleb Brown committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes! More on what it means for Iowa.

It’s a scarlet and grey and blue and maize match made in heaven. At least for Hawkeye fans anyways.

Former four-star signee and Ohio State transfer wide receiver Kaleb Brown announced his commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes today.

After visiting Kinnick Stadium and the Hawkeyes yesterday, it didn’t take long for the 5-foot-10, 197 pound wide receiver to make up his mind. Brown is teaming up with Michigan transfer quarterback Cade McNamara and Iowa.

He joins a Hawkeye receiving corps that was desperate to bolster its ranks with the type of talent and caliber of wide receiver that Brown represents. Brown should immediately factor in alongside returning leading receiver Nico Ragaini, Diante Vines and Charleston Southern transfer Seth Anderson.

Here’s a look at Brown’s Hudl highlights. Plus, everything you need to know about what Brown is bringing to Iowa City.

Ohio State receiver Kaleb Brown enters the transfer portal

One more entry into the portal before the spring window closed.

The spring transfer portal window closed Sunday night, but it did not close without one more entry. Ohio State receiver Kaleb Brown entered his name in the portal before the deadline.

Brown was a top 100 recruit and the No. 13 receiver in the 2022 class according to 247Sports composite. He was the first wideout in the class to have his black stripe removed, and he appeared in five games as a freshman, catching one pass for five yards.

In a crowded receiver room, Brown didn’t see a path forward to significant playing time. Early enrollees Carnell Tate and Noah Rogers both had excellent showings in the spring game, and Brandon Inniss is set to arrive this summer. Not to mention all the upperclassmen ahead on the depth chart.

Brown hails from Chicago and had been seen as a Michigan lean before committing to the Buckeyes in the summer of 2021.

For now, the portal is closed, so there will be no more players entering the portal for a while. We’ll keep you up to date as we hear where Brown and others decide to land.

Ranking Ohio State wide receivers by 247Sports composite recruiting rankings

Ranking Ohio State wide receivers by 247Sports composite recruiting ranking #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program has 13 wide receivers on scholarship and appears super deep. Still, as any Buckeye fan knows, this unit took a massive hit last season with the injury to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but the youngsters stepped up in a big way.

It was a bit shocking to see Xavier Johnson return, not that he was an early-round lock for the NFL, but he will undoubtedly get a shot at the next level. There is also a ton of excitement surrounding the stud freshman arriving on campus.

We rank the scholarship wide receivers on the roster based on their 247Sports recruiting rankings. You might be surprised by some of these …

Saturday Blitz names top second year Ohio State players

Who do you think will be Ohio State football’s best breakout second-year player? #GoBucks

College football is one of the most fun sports to watch and follow because you never know which young guy is going to explode onto the scene next. Ohio State football has had no shortage of immediate impact guys, such as Maurice Clarett, Ted Ginn Jr., and Andy Katzenmoyer, in its history, but we are always on the hunt for who could be next.

The folks from Saturday Blitz gave us their opinion on the top three second-year players on the Buckeye roster that could become stars, one is very obvious, but two are a bit surprising. Let’s dive in!

Kaleb Brown loses his black stripe

Another Buckeye newcomer has lost his black stripe, making it two on Wednesday. #GoBucks

We were made aware of a couple of more black-stripe alerts on Wednesday. Kirk Herbstreit’s son, Zak, shed his earlier in the day, surely making the former Ohio State quarterback and current ESPN analyst proud, and that was followed by wide receiver Kaleb Brown also losing his.

You know the drill by now. Once OSU newcomers conduct themselves the way the culture approves, the black stripe is removed to consider them “official” Buckeyes. That is then followed by a short little ceremony to remove the black tape to unveil the traditional scarlet stripe down the center of the helmet. The player is then given an opportunity to say a few words in front of the team.

“I just want to give glory to God, man for putting me with y’all,” Brown said. “I want to thank the trainers, and shoutout Zone 6. Go Bucks!”

Brown becomes the first summer enrollee to lose his black stripe, speaking volumes for how much he has impressed since his arrival in June. This makes the eighth overall black-stripe removal since spring and the fifth of the fall.

We’ll continue to keep track of all the newcomers as they go through this sort of right of passage.

Top ten Ohio State football recruits in the 2022 class

Top ten recruits in the 2022 class that could make an impact this season, and their scouting reports. #GoBucks

The 2022 college football season is coming up and even though most of the focus is on the returning studs like C.J. Stroud, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Paris Johnson Jr. — and rightfully so — it is still always fun diving into the possible future of the program.

Ohio State snagged a consensus top-five recruiting class and added a number of studs, and despite the defense playing less than ideal ball last season, they still snagged a number of playmakers on that side of the ball too. We here at Buckeyes Wire have been working all summer on some of the top recruits in this class and the following are the top five and a link to their scouting report.

Enjoy looking through what is widely considered the top ten commits that are incoming freshmen and the skinny on each for the 2022 season.

Ohio State hoping to add another highly rated wide receiver that was considered a Michigan lean

Once thought to be a Michigan lean, Ohio State is gaining ground for the No. 6 ranked receiver in the nation, Kaleb Brown.

With so much talent in the cupboard at the wide receiver position, does Ohio State really need another top-tier wideout? The short answer is yes. And Kaleb Brown, once thought to be a Michigan lean, might be the next one Brian Hartline lures to Columbus.

Brown hails from Chicago and is the No. 6 rated receiver in the 2022 class according to 247 Sports composite rankings. The Buckeyes already have commitments from the No. 4 and No. 19 ranked 2022 pass catchers in Caleb Burton and Kyion Grayes.

With recent transfers of Mookie Cooper and Jameson Williams, it opens up the door to add more talent. College football is a revolving door with graduation, players leaving early for the NFL, and now more than ever before with the transfer portal.

Picking up a player of Brown’s caliber would add to an already great receiving class. Just check out his one-handed snag from Michigan recruit J.J. McCarthy.

Speaking of Michigan, Ohio State has been picking up steam with Brown’s recruitment. There have been several crystal ball picks that have swung in the Buckeye’s favor.

In a rivalry that lasts 365 days a year, a commitment from Brown would be another dagger in the heart for TTUN. As an Ohio State fan, what could be better?
