Madden NFL 24 ratings revealed for Iowa Hawkeyes rookies

In addition to their dream of making the NFL, another childhood dream has been realized for five Hawkeye rookies: Welcome to Madden NFL 24!

Becoming a playable character in a video game is a dream come true for all professional athletes. Few moments signify that you made it more than being forever immortalized in a video game.

We all grew up as kids playing sports games and putting ourselves into the game. I 100% spent hours on early Maddens and NBA 2Ks painstakingly trying to replicate myself in the game. I never quite ended up as that 6-foot-5 gunslinger of a quarterback, unfortunately.

Those days of long hours in the creation suite are over for these former Iowa Hawkeyes. For the first time in their lives, these five players are officially playable in Madden. Just like Joe Kingman in The Gameplan, these rookies can now have the satisfaction of leading the charge against their friends on the virtual field.

For Iowa fans, they can now play with five of their favorite former players in Madden 24. Rookies Lukas Van Ness, Jack Campbell, Sam LaPorta, Riley Moss, and Kaevon Merriweather make their official video game debuts in Madden 24. Here is how they stack up to the rest of the competition.

Kaevon Merriweather signs with Tampa Bay Buccaneers as undrafted free agent

Kaevon Merriweather has his professional landing spot! Kaevon inked an undrafted free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After missing out on being selected in the 2023 NFL draft, former Iowa safety Kaevon Merriweather didn’t have to wait long to find out where his next football stop would be.

Hawkeye Insider‘s David Eickholt broke the news that Merriweather would be inking an undrafted free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Merriweather appeared in 45 games and started 25 during his Hawkeye career. The 6-foot, 205 pound safety ended his Iowa career with 118 tackles, 12 pass breakups, four interceptions and two tackles for loss. He registered three of those interceptions this past season.

Ahead of Iowa’s regular season finale versus Nebraska, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz reflected on the type of impact Merriweather had on his defense.

“You talk about Jack Campbell, Kaevon, I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve been good at defense. We have guys at every position, not that they’re all the same, Kaevon is definitely a veteran, him and Riley are the two veterans in that group. Up front you have Noah, John Waggoner, Joe Evans, and linebackers we have a couple guys. They’ll be talking on Saturday.

“You have that type of leadership in every group, they impact that room individually, but they impact that room when they’re all together, the whole team. That’s how you build a winning team. You have to have the right guys, though. We really appreciate that,” Ferentz said.

Here’s a look back at Merriweather’s standout career with the Hawkeyes through these sensational photos. Best of luck on the next step, Kaevon!

Secret Superstars of the 2023 NFL draft: The best underrated prospects

Who are the best underrated prospects in the 2023 NFL draft? Doug Farrar runs down the sleepers who could make surprising differences in the NFL.

Several NFL executives have already made it clear that they’re struggling to find as many as 20 prospects in the 2023 NFL draft class deserving of a first-round grade.

That may look like a pull quote, but it’s not entirely uncommon. Drafts like the 2023 one, which starts Thursday at 8:00 p.m. EST, are wider than they are tall, which means that while there aren’t a ton of obvious first-round guys, there are second- and third-day players who can make a difference on an NFL roster right away.

And that’s why it’s so important to have your scouting go all the way through all seven rounds and beyond. Ask the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, who got their eventual starting running back (Rutgers’ Isiah Pacheco) in the seventh round. Or the Seattle Seahawks, who bagged starting cornerback Tariq Woolen out of UTSA in the fifth. And of course, there were few more interesting rookie stories in 2022 than the tale of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, the most relevant “Mr. Irrelevant” in pro football history.

Looking ahead to the most talented sleepers in the 2023 draft class, there are prospects who have been pushed down in loaded position groups, those who need a bit of finishing work to fully unlock their NFL potential, and those who don’t have a total skill set, but who do a few things very well. They are all more than worthy of NFL consideration, and just because they’ll probably hear their names called in the late second or early third day of the draft, don’t automatically discount their NFL potential.

That’s a mistake the smartest NFL teams never make. Here are my most gifted sleepers — the “Secret Superstars” of the 2023 NFL draft.

The NFL draft is just a day away. Here is Hawkeyes Wire’s 2023 NFL mock draft with the pick and team for Iowa Hawkeyes in the draft.

The 2023 NFL draft is upon us and the oasis of offseason football happenings gets its second act following spring games. The draft is airing on ESPN, ABC, and NFL Network to provide a bevy of coverage, analysis, and updates on all things taking place.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have five players that are anticipated to hear their names called at some point throughout the draft. Edge rusher Lukas Van Ness has thrust himself into a first-round talent, while linebacker Jack Campbell and tight end Sam LaPorta find themselves flirting with the first and second rounds. Cornerback Riley Moss and safety Kaevon Merriweather are two experienced members of the secondary that should provide a fundamentally sound player to the NFL team that selects them.
