Commanders coach Dan Quinn on expectations for Marshon Lattimore

Commanders coach Dan Quinn shared some insight on Marshon Lattimore’s practice plans and set expectations for the former Pro Bowler against his old team:

For the first time since the Washington Commanders acquired Marshon Lattimore via trade with the New Orleans Saints, things are finally trending toward the Pro Bowl cornerback making his debut against his former team this weekend.

Lattimore began practicing fully this week with no limitations, putting him on track to suit up for Sunday’s matchup. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn shared his thoughts on potentially adding Lattimore into the lineup.

“It’s a big deal, to add a player of this caliber after the trade deadline, it just doesn’t happen that often,” Quinn told reporters Wednesday. He also made it a point that they will be cautious with the player, making sure that he’s fully equipped to get back on the field after dealing with a nagging hamstring injury for the last month.

“We’ll take it through the whole week. We’re not going to miss one step with him and the practicing and hitting all the markers. If it trends that way good, then (he will) go,” Quinn said.

Quinn knows exactly how impactful a player of Lattimore’s caliber can be, having coached against him twice a year during his tenure as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Lattimore and the Saints went 2-5 against Quinn with the shutdown corner erasing Julio Jones and most other receivers the dirty birds threw at him. Now he’s returning to New Orleans as a visitor.

Rams should consider signing Julio Jones to help with red zone struggles

Free agent Julio Jones still wants to play football and with their injuries, the Rams could be a perfect place to end his storied career.

Julio Jones was once considered the best wide receiver in the NFL due to his ridiculous length, insane athleticism and pass-catching prowess. However, Father Time is undefeated and it has caught up to Jones.

Since leaving Atlanta in 2021, Jones has had stops in Tennessee, Tampa Bay and Philadelphia.

As an Eagle last season, Jones was their WR3, putting up 11 catches, 74 yards and three touchdowns.

Why should the Rams sign a player putting up that type of production? Simple. His pure height and length open up the field for everyone else.

When looking at the state of the Rams’ wide receiver room, there’s a bunch of speed guys. Tutu Atwell, Demarcus Robinson, Xavier Smith, Tyler Johnson and such. The team lacks a big, physical receiver – a player that can snatch the ball over defenders. Jones could be that option.

Jones also opens up the goal line fade, the deep jump ball and the quick slant – three routes that are effective in the red zone, a place where Sean McVay has shown a desire to throw the football.

Jones is cheap, available and ready to play. For those with concerns, the question to be asked is what’s the worst that can happen? Jones represents the best deal in football. Low-risk, high-reward.

DK Metcalf: Ryan Grubb’s offense has the ‘potential to be special’

To reach its full potential, this scheme needs DK to finally live up to his.

Seattle Seahawks beat reporters got to speak with three players before yesterday’s mandatory minicamp practice at the VMAC. First up was star wide receiver DK Metcalf, who hadn’t been seen around the building tyet his offseason. So, this was the media’s first chance to ask Metcalf about the big coaching changes the team has gone through this year.

While Metcalf admitted that seeing Pete Carroll get fired was a sad moment, he’s also excited about working with new head coach Mike Macdonald and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Asked about the effectiveness of Grubb’s new scheme, Metcalf said he likes the explosiveness and that the offense has the potential to be great.

To reach its full potential, this scheme needs DK to finally live up to his. While he’s been a consistently strong performer since he was drafted in 2019, Metcalf has the gifts he needs to be one of the top-five wide receivers in the NFL, but as of yet he’s at-best been a fringe top-10 producer. If Grubb can unleash Metcalf’s inner elite WR and get him competing at a focused peak-Julio Jones type of level, it’s going to be very tough to stop this passing game.
