2 veteran free agents worked out for the Seahawks on Monday

John Schneider said the team is still working on some roster stuff but is hoping to have the Week 1 roster set by afternoon today.

The Seattle Seahawks announced five roster and practice squad moves just before yesterday’s practice. Sounds like they aren’t quite done yet, though.

Speaking with reporters before practice, general manager John Schneider said the team is still working on some roster stuff but is hoping to have the Week 1 roster set by afternoon today.

That means we should expect to see a couple more moves.

As to who they might pick up it’s anybody’s guess, but the team did work out two free agents yesterday.

Former Vikings WR Dan Chisena

Aside from finding some sort of magic solution to improve their interior defensive line rotation, the top priority for the Seahawks right now has to be adding some wide receiver depth.

At the moment there are only five wide receivers on the roster after Dareke Young was placed on injured reserve yesterday. While having a healthy DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett at the top of the depth chart goes a long way, remember that Cody Thompson is one of the five, Jaxon Smith-Njigba is dealing with a wrist injury and preseason superstars like Jake Bobo tend to drop off quite a bit when the real games begin.

One short-term solution might be signing Dan Chisena (6-foot-3, 202 pounds), who worked out for the team Monday. After going undrafted, he was picked up by the Vikings. Over the last three seasons Chisena appeared in 27 games for Minnesota. It was mostly a special teams role, though as he put in 496 snaps there compared to just 11 on offense.

Seattle may also choose to elevate one of the practice squad wide receivers to the active roster (expect that on Saturday). Right now, they are carrying three on the practice squad: Easop Winston Jr., Matt Landers and Cade Johnson.

Former Bills S JaQuan Johnson

With Joey Blount and Jonathan Sutherland going down and reaching injury settlements with the team, Seattle could also use another body at safety. Another free agent they worked out yesterday could help there – JaQuan Johnson. He played at Miami (FL) in college and was picked in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft by Buffalo. Since then, Johnson (5-foot-10, 191 pounds) has appeared in 60 regular season games for the Bills. He has totaled 58 tackles and two interceptions.

As for game-day elevation options, at the moment the Seahawks have two safeties on their practice squad: Ty Okada and Brady Breeze, who signed yesterday.

Ballers & Busters: Raiders preseason Week 1 vs 49ers

Your Ballers & Busters for Raiders preseason preseason opener

Sunday the Raiders took the field for the first time since the end of last season. And just as they did last preseason, there wasn’t much in the way of starters on the field.

Yeah, unlike years ago when the starters would at least play a series in the opener, these days they don’t see the field at all, making the preseason games all about the hopefuls proving themselves to try and earn a roster spot.

With that in mind, here are the standouts among those who took the field against the 49ers.

Ballers

QB Aidan O’Connell

The rookie balled out for three quarters. He completed 15 of 18 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. And two of his three incompletions were drops. Very impressive first impression for the fourth round pick out of Purdue.

DE Jordan Willis, DE Isaac Rochell

The two of them shared a sack on third down to force the 49ers into a three-and-out to open the game. And then they were both forces on the outside the rest of their time on the field.

Willis had a pressure on the next drive that also resulted in a three-and-out and then Rochell had a pressure that helped lead to a sack on the 49ers third consecutive three-and-out to start the game.

Willis ended consecutive drives to end the first half. With a run stuff for no gain on 4th down and then a QB hit that resulted in a bad pass to send the two teams to the locker room with the Raiders holding a 14-7 lead.

The first 49ers possession of the third quarter had Rochell wreaking havoc on them. He got in the backfield to disrupt the play on a one yard run, then had two run stuffs for no gain.

TE Cole Fotheringham

Fotheringham was all over the place. First and foremost, he was the team’s leading receiver with 71 yards on five catches. Knowing that his best chance of making the roster will be with his special teams work, he had a tackle on a punt return as well. And for good measure, he had a couple of run blocks that led to good yardage too.

LB Curtis Bolton

The first tackle of the game was Bolton on the opening kickoff. Late in the third quarter, he came in at linebacker and made a impact there too. He laid the hit that forced the fumble for the Raiders’ first takeaway of the day. Then he ended Sam Darnold’s day with a couple blitzes that both led to incompletions and a 58-yard field goal attempt that missed wide right.

DT Neil Farrell Jr

With the score still tied at seven apiece late in the second quarter, the 49ers lined up to go for it on fourth and one. Jordan Willis would get the run stuff at the line, but it was Farrell who filled the gap to make it possible. Farrell was there again on fourth and one early in the third quarter to stuff Sam Darnold on his QB sneak attempt for another turnover on downs.

DT Adam Butler

On consecutive plays late in the first quarter, Butler got into the 49ers backfield. The first time, Trey Lance managed to escape, though he was only able to scramble for two yards. The next play Butler got pressure again, this time he wrapped up Lance for the sack. Butler later had a run stop as well.

S Roderic Teamer

As Roderic “Special” Teamer is want to do, he made a play as a gunner on special teams, stopping the return man for no gain at the 14-yard-line. He also had a couple assisted tackles in the pass game as well as the run game.

Honorable Mention

CB Sam Webb — Was in the right place when his receiver couldn’t get ahold of a pass and he picked it off and returned it to the two-yard-line.

RB Sincere McCormick — had two touchdowns in the game; one on the ground and one through, both from two yards out.

LB Amari Burney — Had a pursuit sack and made a great read on a pass over the middle to nearly pick it off.

Which former Bills players will face Buffalo in 2023?

Here’s the list of former #Bills players… who Buffalo will play against in 2023:

The attention of western New York is completely on the team’s 2023 roster. Is this one that can finally crack the Super Bowl?

But let’s face it. We’ve all ben there.

“Hey, I know that guy,” said every Bills fan when a former player is facing Buffalo. Here’s the few times you’re going to say that again next season.

Full list of 2022 Bills players who have signed with new teams

Here’s a rundown of who the #Bills have lost in free agency thus far:

As it goes each and every offseason, the Buffalo Bills can’t keep all their free agents even if they wanted to.

Here’s the full list of pending free agents the Bills had after the 2022 season that have gone on to sign contracts with new teams:

Raiders sign former Bills safety Jaquan Johnson to one-year deal

#Raiders sign former #Bills safety Jaquan Johnson to one-year deal:

Buffalo Bills were expected to lose some pieces in their secondary this offseason. That hadn’t really happened… until now.

The Las Vegas Raiders have signed former Bills safety to a one-year deal. The team announced the transaction on Monday.

Johnson, 27, was selected in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft by Buffalo. Johnson was in a tough spot during his entire Bills career.

Through its entirety, the team had one of the top-safety duos in the NFL during his time in western New York via Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer.

Because of that, Johnson never really had a path to a larger role with the Bills, which led to him only starting four games in his career.. But he did manage two interceptions with the team.

Johnson’s largest contributions to the Bills came on special teams. He played in more than 60 percent of Buffalo’s special teams snaps over the past three seasons.

Earlier this offseason, it was expected that the Bills would lose Poyer during free agency. He ended up re-signing with the team, as did Cam Lewis and Dane Jackson, who were restricted free agents.

All considered, Buffalo’s secondary won’t have much turnover.

But with Johnson’s departure and the uncertain future surrounding Damar Hamlin, a long-term safety project pick could be on the docket for the Bills at the upcoming draft.

Who replaces Micah Hyde? 12 things to know about Bills’ Jaquan Johnson

Who replaces Micah Hyde? It’s going to be Jaquan Johnson… You know of him, but get to know him better right here:

Since 2017, the Buffalo Bills have had some constants.

Sean McDermott has been the head coach for every game since then. In addition, at safety, the team has had at least one of Jordan Poyer or Micah Hyde in the lineup for every contest.

On Saturday, the Bills placed Hyde on injured reserve with a neck injury. His season is over.

The next man up is one that’s familiar: Jaquan Johnson. However, Johnson has been in the Poyer-Hyde shadow for several years.

With him thrust  in the spotlight, get to know him a little better now.

Here are 12 things to know about Johnson:

How the Bills’ defense can still be great despite Micah Hyde’s season-ending injury

Bills cornerback Micah Hyde is out for the rest of the 2022 season with a neck injury. Here’s why Buffalo’s defense should still be okay.

The Buffalo Bills were already coming into their game-of-the-week matchup against the Miami Dolphins and their explosive passing game lighter than they’d like on defense. Cornerbacks Tre’Davious White (ACL) and Dane Jackson (neck) are out, as is defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (hamstring) and safety Micah Hyde (neck).

On Saturday morning, the news went from bad to worse when Jack Bechta, Hyde’s agent, revealed that Hyde’s neck injury, which he suffered in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans, will cause him to miss the rest of the 2022 season.

This is obviously a major blow to Buffalo’s league-best defense, as Hyde and Jordan Poyer have comprised the NFL’s best safety duo for a few years now. By the way, Poyer will probably be a game-time decision with a foot injury. So, ouch.

Beyond whatever happens against the Dolphins, how do the Bills get past this? They are viewed as the prohibitive Super Bowl favorites in the AFC, and for good reason, but as much as they’ll miss Hyde, head coach Sean McDermott and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier must adopt the “Next Man Up” philosophy as they go.

“I know we have a number of injuries here, but I remain very confident in our football team, and very confident in the back end,” Sean McDermott said this week.

That was more about rookie cornerbacks Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford, who will be on the field in place of White and Jackson, but it now must apply to Hyde’s position.

Instant analysis: Bills fall flat in preseason finale vs. Panthers as Matt Araiza news looms

Instant analysis: #Bills fall flat in preseason finale vs. #Panthers as Matt Araiza loomed (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills lost to the Carolina Panthers 21-0 in their 2022 preseason finale. It was the first preseason loss for the Bills in 10 exhibitions.

Most of Buffalo’s starters were on the sidelines for the game, allowing many depth players to work to pad their resumes before the roster reduction on August 30. Unfortunately, there weren’t many splash plays to push some of these players onto the 53-man roster.

What also dampened any lack of big moments was what was laid at the feet of the Bills on Thursday: The Matt Araiza lawsuit. The punter for Buffalo was one of three men named in a civil lawsuit that accuses him of raping a 17-year-old girl last year.

The situation was on everyone’s mind as the game unfolded and Bills head coach Sean McDermott saw numerous questions thrown his way after the contest.

No one was really thinking it considering the allegations are much more serious than a game, but everything was weighing on the players.

Buffalo’s offense sputtered all night, failing to gain traction with Case Keenum and Matt Barkley at quarterback. The pair combined for only 110 net passing yards. The Bills struggled to keep drives alive, converting only 3-of-11 third-down conversions. Keenum also threw an interception. On Carolina’s ensuing drive, the Panthers scored on a seven-yard rushing touchdown by Chuba Hubbard.

A few offensive players tried to put their stamp on a roster spot. Running backs Duke Johnson and Raheem Blackshear broke off a few nice runs. However, Johnson is on the fringe of a roster spot, while Blackshear seems destined for the practice squad.

Wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins has made things difficult for the Bills coaching staff. While Hodgins’ numbers were not stellar (four catches for 19 yards), he did show that he can catch virtually anything thrown in his direction.

Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey dialed up a largely vanilla game plan, which contributed to a lack of big plays on the night. The Bills are apparently keeping the creativity hidden for the regular season.

Defensively, the Bills kept the Panthers largely under wraps. The Panthers played with several starters in the lineup, including quarterback Baker Mayfield. The reserves limited Carolina to only 5.9 yards per reception with Mayfield at the helm.

The defensive line was strong against the run, allowing only 1.9 yards per carry heading into garbage time.

Jaquan Johnson might be the biggest winner from this preseason. He tied for the team lead in tackles with six. Johnson was all over the field against against the Panthers, making plays at the line of scrimmage and in coverage. If Jordan Poyer is not ready to return in Week 1, Johnson will be a solid option in the All-Pro’s place.

Of course, it’s worth mentioning Barkley’s performance again. Not as a throw, though. The No. 3 quarterback was Araiza’s replacement at punter.

General manager Brandon Beane, McDermott and the organization will have some difficult choices in finalizing the remaining spots on the roster. Buffalo will need to cut 27 players by 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Of course, the looming one above all might be Araiza.
