Dolphins release DE Jason Pierre-Paul, activate rookie RB Chris Brooks from IR

Miami releases a veteran edge rusher and brings back rookie RB.

The Miami Dolphins had a decision to make on Tuesday, as they had hit the deadline to officially activate rookie running back Chris Brooks from injured reserve after three weeks of practice.

Miami used their seventh designation to return on Brooks, and if they hadn’t activated him from injured reserve by Tuesday, they would’ve lost him for the year and wasted the designation.

Brooks, 23, had played mostly on special teams before getting hurt in Miami’s win over the Carolina Panthers. Through his first six games, Brooks rushed for 94 yards on an impressive 6.3 yards per attempt.

To make room for the rookie back on the 53-man roster, the Dolphins released edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul.

Pierre-Paul, 34, was added to the roster after Jaelan Phillips suffered his season-ending Achilles injury. However, Miami the veteran only ended up playing five defensive snaps (and eight on special teams) in his two appearances.

The Dolphins did recently re-sign Melvin Ingram to their practice squad, so if they do end up needing extra help on the edge, Ingram might be able to provide that.

It also wouldn’t be surprising to see Pierre-Paul brought back on the practice squad if he doesn’t get an offer elsewhere.

Cameron Jordan could miss just his second-ever game due to injury in Week 13

Cameron Jordan has played a lot of games in his NFL career — 214 of them, including the playoffs. But he could miss a game to injury for just the second time this Sunday:

This is tough. Cameron Jordan has played a lot of games in his NFL career — 214 of them, including the playoffs. But an ankle injury suffered late in last week’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons has kept him out of the first two days of practice going into Week 13’s matchup with the Detroit Lions, and it’s looking like Jordan could have to sit this one out.

If so, it’ll be just the second game of his 13-year pro career that he’ll miss due to injury. Jordan’s NFL-best streak of 172 consecutive starts came to an end in 2021 when he missed a game in isolation during the league’s COVID-19 protocol, but his first absence due to an injury came last year with a fractured orbital bone.

So it’s looking like he’ll be sidelined for a second time this weekend unless Jordan is able to practice on at least a limited basis Friday. The eight-time Pro Bowler has pressured quarterbacks at a higher rate this season but struggled to finish plays with takedowns; his 2.0 sacks are the fewest he’s had in a single season since his 2011 rookie year.

What’s more frustrating is that the Saints just had Jason Pierre-Paul on their practice squad. They knew Jordan was hurt and could have signed Pierre-Paul to the 53-man roster, but he chose to leave and join the Miami Dolphins. Now, it’s possible they made Pierre-Paul an offer and he declined for a better long-term opportunity elsewhere (as happened last season with Latavius Murray going to the Denver Broncos). Miami is a legitimate Super Bowl contender with an 8-3 record and one of the game’s most popular head coaches in Mike McDaniel. The Saints are 5-6 and trending in the wrong direction. If Pierre-Paul wanted out, there wasn’t much they could do to force him into staying.

Should Jordan be unavailable on Sunday, look for Carl Granderson and Tanoh Kpassagnon to start at defensive end with Isaiah Foskey and Kyle Phillips rotating into the game; the Saints could also bring up preseason standout Niko Lalos from their practice squad. Foskey missed some time with a quadriceps injury but has practiced fully this week, and this could be the opportunity the rookie second-round pick needs to prove he’s earned more snaps. Stay tuned.

Saints to sign kicker Austin Seibert to their practice squad after tryout

The Saints are signing kicker Austin Seibert to their practice squad after a successful tryout on Tuesday:

Here’s the fallout from Tuesday’s group workout: NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported that the Saints are expected to sign kicker Austin Seibert to their practice squad. The Times-Picayune | Advocate’s Matthew Paras confirmed news of Seibert’s signing.

This comes after Seibert auditioned alongside other veteran specialists including longtime Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby. The Saints were already short a player on their 16-man practice squad after Jason Pierre-Paul left town for a better opportunity with the Miami Dolphins, so they won’t need to let anyone go to make room for him.

Seibert, 27, was a fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2019 NFL draft out of Oklahoma. He’s spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, and New York Jets in the time since, and he’s made 45 of his 56 field goal tries (80.4%) in his NFL career. He’s also hit 56 of 62 extra point attempts (90.3%).

Blake Grupe is dealing with a minor groin injury, so it’s smart to add a backup in case he’s unable to go for this Sunday’s game with the Detroit Lions. Stay tuned.

Dolphins place LB Jaelan Phillips on IR, officially sign DE Jason Pierre-Paul

On Tuesday, Miami made two roster moves official.

The Miami Dolphins’ 53-man roster has been in constant flux throughout their 2023 campaign, and that’s not slowing down after Week 12.

On Tuesday, Miami made two transactions official, as they placed linebacker Jaelan Phillips on injured reserve and signed edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul.

Phillips suffered a torn Achilles in the Dolphins’ battle with the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, and Pierre-Paul will be part of a group, that also includes Andrew Van Ginkel, Emmanuel Ogbah and Cameron Goode, who helps replace the third-year linebacker’s production.

Miami hopes that Pierre-Paul’s veteran experience can help the team win their first Super Bowl in 50 years.

Jason Pierre-Paul reacts to signing with Dolphins

The newest Dolphin reacts to his own signing.

The Miami Dolphins, after losing out on edge rush Derek Barnett due to waiver priority, turned their attention to a two-time Super Bowl champion.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Miami is signing edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul off of the New Orleans Saints practice squad.

After the news broke, Pierre-Paul took to social media himself to share his reaction to the news.

The 34-year-old Pierre-Paul was born and raised in Deerfield Beach, Florida which is just over 30 miles from Miami Gardens. He attended Deerfield High School before spending part of his collegiate career at South Florida.

Both Miami and Pierre-Paul are hoping that a homecoming culminates in a third championship for the newest Dolphin.

Jason Pierre-Paul says goodbye to the Saints after joining the Dolphins

Jason Pierre-Paul said goodbye to the New Orleans Saints in an Instagram post after joining the Miami Dolphins, his hometown team:

It’s official: Jason Pierre-Paul is leaving the New Orleans Saints after just one game in the black and gold. Pierre-Paul announced his previously-reported departure for the Miami Dolphins in a post from his official Instagram account, which was shared by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Because Pierre-Paul was on the Saints’ practice squad he was free to entertain offers from other teams willing to sign him to their 53-man roster, so the Saints will not receive any compensation for his loss.

Pierre-Paul is from South Florida where he starred at Deerfield Beach High School in the Miami suburbs. For him, this is a homecoming.

His exit leaves the Saints in a tight spot at defensive end; they signed Pierre-Paul to the practice squad in the first place because they were missing recently-drafted young pros like Payton Turner and Isaiah Foskey due to injury. Compound their absences with an underperforming pass rush (New Orleans has just 18 sacks so far this season, tied for second-fewest in the league) and the need for more help off the edge is obvious. Let’s see where they turn next.

Report: Dolphins poaching Jason Pierre-Paul off of the Saints practice squad

Report: Dolphins poaching Jason Pierre-Paul off of the Saints practice squad

Jason Pierre-Paul hardly had time to get his photo taken in a New Orleans Saints uniform before leaving town for a new opportunity. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Miami Dolphins are expected to sign Pierre-Paul from the Saints practice squad, having lost a key starter (Jaelan Phillips) to a season-ending injury.

Pierre-Paul played 17 snaps in the Saints’ Week 12 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, totaling two tackles without registering a quarterback pressure. He wasn’t going to get many reps in New Orleans with Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson on top of the rotation while Tanoh Kpassagnon is playing heavy minutes as their top backup. And youngsters Isaiah Foskey and Payton Turner are working their way back from injuries, too.

Still, it’s disappointing. The Saints badly need more help rushing the passer. They’ve only bagged 18 sacks in 11 games this season which ties the Carolina Panthers for the second-fewest in the league. They’re getting gashed by mobile quarterbacks and struggling to get home when they do send pressure. With Pierre-Paul out of the picture, someone else may need to step up. The Saints could give preseason standout Niko Lalos an opportunity to come up from the practice squad, but we’ll have to wait and see what their next move is.

Dolphins to sign DE Jason Pierre-Paul off Saints practice squad

Miami adds veteran edge help.

After losing linebacker Jaelan Phillips to a torn Achilles in their Black Friday matchup with the New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins have been looking to add some edge help to replace his production.

While the Dolphins failed to successfully claim Derek Barnett after the Philadelphia Eagles waived him, they have decided to sign veteran edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul off of the New Orleans Saints practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Pierre-Paul, 34, has recorded 94.5 total sacks in his career, but in the late stages of his career, he’s played in just one game this year for New Orleans, recording two tackles.

As a member of the Ravens for four games in 2022, he recorded three sacks.

He’ll likely play a rotational role with Miami, helping Andrew Van Ginkel, Emmanuel Ogbah and Cameron Goode on the active roster.

Ex-Eagles DE Derek Barnett would be a worthwhile waiver claim for the Saints

The Saints have nothing to lose by submitting a waiver claim on Derek Barnett. The former Eagle is affordable and their pass rush needs all the help it can get:

A veteran pass rusher is suddenly available with the Philadelphia Eagles choosing to waive defensive end Derek Barnett after a few years of lukewarm trade rumors. And the New Orleans Saints would be wise to try and pick him up off the waiver wire.

Barnett was Philadelphia’s first round pick back in 2017, selected three slots after the Saints took cornerback Marshon Lattimore; the former Tennessee Volunteer had a solid start to his career as a pressure player off the edge, but he lost his 2022 season to a torn ACL and returned to a diminished role in 2023.

So why would he fit the Saints? New Orleans is tied for the second-fewest sacks in the NFL this season (18). They rank eighth-lowest in pressure rate (18.2%) at Pro Football Reference. Anyone watching their games can tell that their defensive line is a slow unit that struggles to finish plays. Even if Barnett isn’t the same player he once was, he could be an upgrade over other players in their depth chart.

It helps his case that Barnett is affordable — ESPN’s Field Yates reports that the Eagles restructured his contract prior to waiving him, which means an acquiring team like the Saints would only be on the hook for $420,000 in base salary for the rest of this season. That’s a very easy fit even for New Orleans’ complicated salary cap spreadsheet.

Plus, the Saints are slotted pretty high in waiver claim priority after suffering back-to-back losses in recent weeks. They should fall at No. 12 out of the 32 teams. If they want Barnett, there’s a decent chance they could get him. With Cameron Jordan dealing with an ankle injury from Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons and Jason Pierre-Paul not making much impact behind Carl Granderson and Tanoh Kpassagnon (Isaiah Foskey and Payton Turner aren’t ready to return to action just yet, either), the Saints have nothing to lose by at least kicking the tires on Barnett and seeing if he can play.
