Panthers injury updates: DE Yetur Gross-Matos, G John Miller still limited

Despite a few notable additions to their Week 4 injury report, the Panthers are trending relatively well heading into Sunday.

Despite the hubbub around tonight’s Rolling Stones concert at Bank of America Stadium, there wasn’t much noise coming out of the Carolina Panthers’ practice on Thursday. That includes a relatively mild injury report ahead of their Week 4 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, which is probably to the team’s sa-tis-fac-tion.

(See what we did there?)

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game Status
RB Christian McCaffrey Hamstring DNP DNP
DE Yetur Gross-Matos Ankle Limited Limited
G John Miller Shoulder Limited Limited
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. Thumb Full Full
CB C.J. Henderson Groin Full Full
DT Phil Hoskins Non-injury DNP DNP

Mostly of note are Gross-Matos and Miller, both of whom remain at a limited capacity. Miller did, however, progress out of a green jersey as he continues to deal with his shoulder issue.

Remaining at full workouts were Henderson and Marshall Jr., who were joined by Erving and Thompson on the report. McCaffrey, of course, is still away and will miss multiple weeks due to his hamstring strain.

Panthers injury updates: CB C.J. Henderson a full participant

Despite a groin injury, Panthers CB C.J. Henderson is on track to make his team debut in Week 4 against the Cowboys.

When the Carolina Panthers acquired cornerback C.J. Henderson, they also acquired yet another pain the groin . . . literally, not figuratively. They’ve already dealt with this type of injury a few times this season, with safety Juston Burris set to miss at least three weeks with his.

But, luckily for them, this one won’t be a long-term issue. In fact, the team’s new defensive back is certainly on track to play ahead of the exciting Week 4 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Panthers released their first injury report of the week on Wednesday, with Henderson included as a full participant.

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game Status
RB Christian McCaffrey Hamstring DNP
DE Yetur Gross-Matos Ankle Limited
G John Miller Shoulder Limited
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. Thumb Full
CB C.J. Henderson Groin Full
DT Phil Hoskins Non-injury DNP

Not as involved were Gross-Matos and Miller. Gross-Matos did not play in Week 3’s win over the Houston Texans after rolling his ankle just four days prior against the New Orleans Saints.

Christian McCaffrey, of course, did not participate. He will miss the next few weeks with a strained hamstring.

Panthers Week 2 injury report: All systems go ahead of clash with Saints

Exhale, Panthers fans. RT Taylor Moton, and the six other players listed on this week’s injury report, will all be good to go against the Saints.

Some concern about the Carolina Panthers’ chances against the New Orleans Saints arose when starting right tackle Taylor Moton suddenly popped up on Thursday’s injury report. Well, we can probably put those worries to bed.

The Panthers returned an almost perfect final injury report on Friday, just two days ahead of their first divisional matchup of 2021. Although seven players remained listed, none were saddled with any type of game status designation. That suggests they’re all good to go.

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game Status

OT Taylor Moton Groin Limited Limited
S Juston Burris Neck Full Full Full
S Sean Chandler Hamstring Full Full Full
G Pat Elflein Hip Limited Full Full
G John Miller Illness Limited Full Full
WR Shi Smith Shoulder Full Full Full

Losing Moton, or even having him the least bit compromised, would’ve spelled even more trouble for Carolina, who’s already a clear underdog to New Orleans on Sunday. Being without your best offensive linemen on what’s still one of the worst units in the league, of course, is not ideal.

But, fortunately for the Panthers, that seems like it won’t be the case as they shoot for the upset at home.

Panthers injury update: RT Taylor Moton added to report as limited

The Panthers added RT Taylor Moton to the injury report on Thursday. In other news, Saints DE Cameron Jordan salivates.

Any week would be a bad week for the Carolina Panthers to be without starting right tackle Taylor Moton. But this week, in particular, is not one of the more ideal ones in that regard.

Moton was added to the injury report ahead of the Panthers’ Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. A groin injury kept the team’s top offensive lineman as a limited participant in Thursday’s practice.

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri.
DT DaQuan Jones Groin Limited Limited
OT Taylor Moton Groin Limited

Carolina will be welcoming in New Orleans for their first divisional clash of the 2021 season. And if that wasn’t big enough, Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan could be in for one heck of a day if Moton’s presence is compromised in any way.

Save for veteran defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, players who were limited on Wednesday (guards Pat Elflein and John Miller) made the jump to full participation on Thursday.

Panthers injury report: WR Shi Smith back as full participant for Week 2

After being the only Panther on the 53-man roster to miss last week’s opener due to injury, WR Shi Smith was back at full go for practice today.

If you rewind back to the moment where Carolina Panthers receiver Shi Smith injured his shoulder in the preseason finale three weeks ago, there was no way anyone would’ve thought he’d be where he is today. And today, he’s back at a full-go.

The rookie wideout was listed as a full participant in Wednesday’s practice,  even in spite of the injury. He was joined by a handful of other Panthers in what was a relatively encouraging report for the team ahead of their Week 2 contest against the New Orleans Saints.

As announced this morning, Miller has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list and will try to keep working his way back into the starting lineup. Dennis Daley filled in for Miller in last week’s win over the New York Jets.

Panthers activate G John Miller from reserve/COVID-19 list

The Panthers need some help on their offensive line moving forward. Luckily for them, and RG John Miller, they might be getting it this week.

After a not-so-great week trying to protect quarterback Sam Darnold, the Carolina Panthers need some more help with the New Orleans Saints ahead. Well, it looks like they’re going to get it.

On Wednesday morning, the team announced that starting right guard John Miller has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Miller had already missed the season opener against the New York Jets due to his status.

Carolina, again, struggled to maintain consistent blocking throughout the season opener. ESPN Analytics ranked the Panthers dead-last in Pass Block Win Rate (20 percent) of all 32 teams in Week 1.

The performance did not escape head coach Matt Rhule either, as he told reporters on Monday that his guys need to do a better job of protecting the quarterback as the year progresses. Even in a win, Darnold was pressured on 33 percent of his dropbacks.

Miller is not necessarily guaranteed to return to the starting lineup, but this news is a positive step forward.

Panthers rule out RG John Miller, will start Dennis Daley in Week 1

And just like that, the Panthers have lost their starting RG for the 2021 season opener. You’re up, Dennis Daley.

And just like that, the Carolina Panthers have lost their starting right guard for the 2021 season opener. Head coach Matt Rhule confirmed on Monday that John Miller, who was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list just hours prior, is indeed out for Week 1.

He also confirmed third-year veteran Dennis Daley will start in Miller’s place against the New York Jets. Daley started three games for the Panthers last season at left guard.

This, obviously, isn’t ideal news for Carolina, especially given how weak of an offensive line they currently roster. Miller, additionally, was one of the brighter performers on the unit of late.

Rhule, however, maintains his confidence in Daley taking the reins to kick off the campaign.

“I’m really comfortable with Dennis,” Rhule told reporters. “I feel like he should be starting. He has the skill set of a starter. He’s just had some bumps along the way.”

Daley is no stranger to filling in for Miller either, having replaced his teammate for the second preseason tilt with the Baltimore Ravens a few weeks back.

Miller is set to be away from the team for ten days, indicating that he has not been vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.

Panthers place RG John Miller on reserve/COVID-19 list

On Monday, the Panthers announced starting RG John Miller has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Carolina Panthers are entering the 2021 regular season with a distinct lack of depth (and talent) on their offensive line. This certainly won’t help.

Right guard John Miller has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list as of Monday, the team announced. The starting interior lineman may now be in danger of missing the season opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 12.

If Miller is vaccinated, asymptomatic and provides two negative tests, he will be permitted to rejoin the Panthers within the next 24 hours . If he is not vaccinated, he could miss five days for being a close contact or ten days with a positive test.

Rookie Deonte Brown is currently listed as the backup to Miller at right guard on the team’s current depth chart. The sixth-rounder started on the interior of the Alabama Crimson Tide’s offensive line, but on the left side, in each of last year’s 13 games.

Fellow rookie Brady Christensen may also be an option if Miller were to miss the Week 1 contest. Head coach Matt Rhule has previously stated the third-round pick may be best used at guard as he develops his game.

Third-year veteran Dennis Daley, given his proven versatility, could be in play as well.

Panthers Preseason: Winners and losers in the 2021 finale vs. Steelers

Panthers CB Jaycee Horn wasn’t kidding about the seatbelt stuff, was he?

Finding last week’s winners amongst the Carolina Panthers after a listless 20-3 loss wasn’t exactly the most apt exercise to partake in. But fast-forward just six days later and, oh, how the turn tables.

Carolina bounced back from their downer of a performance against the Baltimore Ravens and smashed the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night, 34-9. Albeit a smashing of their backups, it was a smashing nonetheless.

So let’s try to sort out the winners and losers, if we can find any of those, from the Panthers’ 2021 preseason finale.

Winner: Joe Brady

We could put quarterback Sam Darnold here, but he’s already won the starting job. So there’s nothing for him to win at the moment.

Instead, we’ll go with Brady. The second-year offensive coordinator recently waxed poetic about the chemistry between himself and Darnold, saying he “has something” in his new vessel. Well, it looks like he did on Friday night, as Darnold’s sizzling arm strength and developing decision-making made for a nice fit in Brady’s play-calling.

Winner: Jaycee Horn

The 2021 eighth overall pick is, so far, as advertised. He was one of the standout performers in another exciting outing from the defense, clicking in that seatbelt on receivers that came his way.

Loser: Panthers secondary as a whole

Even though the team has made significant strides in improving their personnel at cornerback, they still aren’t very deep there. Rashaan Melvin went down with a groin injury in this one and did not return.

If Melvin isn’t back for Week 1, that’ll add to the list that already includes a suspended A.J. Bouye and a lost-for-the-seaosn Troy Pride Jr.

Winner: Ryan Santoso

Santoso did all he could to kick his competition off the spot. He successfully booted through each of his five kicks, including field goals of 52 and 27 yards.

His job still isn’t assured, however, as the Panthers can regain the seventh-round pick they sent to the New York Giants for Santoso if they don’t play him in more than two games.

Loser: Joey Slye

The aforementioned competition, Slye, is probably on the outs now. He missed his lone field goal attempt, a 49-yard try, right after Santoso’s 52-yarder.

He’s struggled through most of the summer and hasn’t been able to break out of his funk despite the constant support from the team.

Panthers Preseason: All expected starters don’t dress vs. Colts

You’ll have to wait another week to see at least some of the Carolina Panthers’ Sunday best.

Sorry, Carolina Panthers fans. But you’ll have to wait at least another week to see your team’s Sunday best. Every. Single. One.

As expected, head coach Matt Rhule opted not to roll out any projected regular season starters this afternoon against the Indianapolis Colts. The team released its starting lineup an hour before kickoff while also confirming its headliners will not be dressed. So that means civilian clothes for:

Sam Darnold, Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, Robby Anderson, Dan Arnold, Ian Thomas, Cameron Erving, Taylor Moton, Pat Elflein, John Miller, Matt Paradis, Brian Burns, Morgan Fox, Derrick Brown, DaQuan Jones, Shaq Thompson, Jermaine Carter Jr., Haason Reddick, Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson, Jeremy Chinn and Juston Burris.

Also not in uniform will be the crop of running backs Rodney Smith and Reggie Bonnafon, center Mike Panasiuk and defensive tackle Caraun Reid. They will each be inactive due to injury.

Wide receiver Keith Kirkwood, offensive lineman Dennis Daley, cornerback A.J. Bouye, safety Myles Hartfield and linebackers Denzel Perryman, Julian Stanford and Clay Johnston are inactive as well and did not travel with the team.
