All 5 times Trent Baalke made a midseason trade as GM

Will the Jaguars be aggressive at the trade deadline?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 5-2 and have one more game before the Oct. 31 trade deadline.

Clearly, the Jaguars view themselves as a legitimate contender with hopes of their first ever Super Bowl appearance. But does that mean Jacksonville is content with the current state of its roster, or does it mean the team will want to make a stronger push by acquiring another player or two?

The Philadelphia Eagles already went with the latter strategy by sending two draft picks and a player to the Tennessee Titans for two-time All-Pro safety Kevin Byard.

To figure out if the Jaguars are a team likely to do the same, it’s informative to look into Trent Baalke’s past as a general manager. In two previous seasons with Jacksonville and six years running the San Francisco 49ers, he’s made just five trades between the start of the regular season and the trade deadline. Here’s all of them:

Eagles to release TE Dan Arnold ahead of roster deadline

The Philadelphia #Eagles are set to release TE Dan Arnold ahead of roster deadline

The Eagles finished the preseason 0-2-1, and with the roster deadline set for Tuesday afternoon, the team is releasing tight end Dan Arnold.

Arnold logged nine catches for 135 yards last season in Jacksonville after Evan Engram emerged for Doug Pederson.

Arnold has experienced success as a pass catcher, and in 2020, he hauled in 31 out of 45 targets for 438 yards and four touchdowns. He finished with a career-high 35 receptions in 2021, splitting time with the Panthers (three games) and Jaguars (eight games).

5 Eagles players with the most to gain during training camp

With Philadelphia reporting to the NovaCare Complex on Tuesday, we’re looking at five #Eagles players with the most to gain during training camp

The Eagles are back in town, and a 90-man roster full of rookies and veterans is descending upon the NovaCare Complex for the most anticipated training camp.

Super Bowl hopefuls and NFC favorites, Philadelphia has a stacked roster spot with few holes or opportunities to land a starting job.

The offense returns All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts and the best skill position group in the NFL.

Sean Desai takes over a revamped defense featuring five Georgia Bulldogs and three new safeties.

With the first practice scheduled for Wednesday morning, we’re previewing five players with the most to gain from a positive training camp performance.

Eagles to watch: Why these five under-the-radar players could surprise in 2023

We’re previewing five under the radar Philadelphia Eagles who could surprise in 2023

After months of waiting and anticipation, the Eagles will return to the NovaCare Complex next Tuesday, July 25, for the start of training camp.

Philadelphia has one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses, while the Birds and new defensive coordinator Sean Desai will look to replace seven key contributors, including two starters at the linebacker position, safety position, and stud defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.

Brian Johnson will replace Shane Steichen as offensive coordinator and look to take the Eagles’ offense to another level.

With only one week until all 32 teams are in training camp, we’re looking at five under-the-radar players that could surprise us in 2023.

Eagles’ 2023 training camp preview: Looking at the tight end position

We’re taking an early look at the Philadelphia Eagles’ tight end position after OTAs and ahead of training camp

The Eagles have star power at every offensive position, and tight end is no different, with Dallas Goedert sitting on the brink of All-Pro status.

Still, Philadelphia loves to employ a ton of 12 personnel and offensive coordinator Brian Johnson will undoubtedly look for an upgrade in production at the No. 2 tight end spot.

With training camp fast approaching, here’s a training camp preview of the Eagles’ tight end position.

Eagles to sign former Jaguars TE Dan Arnold to 1-year deal

Former Jaguars tight end Dan Arnold is reportedly joining the Eagles

Former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Dan Arnold reached an agreement with the Philadelphia Eagles on a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Arnold, 28, was acquired by the Jaguars in a 2021 trade that sent former first-round pick C.J. Henderson. In eight games immediately after the trade, Arnold caught 28 passes for 324 yards.

After the Jaguars added Evan Engram during the 2022 offseason, Arnold had a smaller role with the Jaguars and caught only nine passes for 135 yards in his first full season with the team.

Jacksonville used the franchise tag to retain Engram and allowed both Arnold and fellow tight end Chris Mahertz to reach free agency. Manhertz signed with the Denver Broncos in March to a two-year deal. The Jaguars addressed their lack of tight end depth by drafting tight end Brenton Strange in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.

The Jaguars aren’t eligible to receive a compensatory pick for the loss of Arnold, as any player signed after May 2 doesn’t count toward the awarding of those selections.

Eagles agree to deal with free agent TE Dan Arnold

Dan Arnold made our list of free agents to target, and on Thursday the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a deal with the former Jaguars tight end

Dan Arnold made our list of free agents to target, and on Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a deal with the former Jaguars tight end.

Philadelphia is stacked on both sides of the football, but we believed they’d continue searching for depth at edge rusher, punter, tight end, and linebacker.

With Arnold on the roster, Philadelphia now has Dallas Goedert, Jack Stoll, Grant Calcaterra, Tyree Jackson, and Dalton Keene as training camp approaches.

Trent Baalke: Drafting a TE isn’t an ‘absolute necessity’ for Jaguars

Jaguars brass say they aren’t too concerned about the team’s current group of tight ends.

The Jacksonville Jaguars used the franchise tag to keep tight end Evan Engram, but the position is still lacking after the team allowed both Chris Manhertz and Dan Arnold to reach free agency.

The only tight ends on the roster other than Engram are Luke Farrell, who has 11 receptions through two NFL seasons, and Gerrit Prince, an undrafted addition who never saw the field as a rookie in 2022.

Despite the lackluster depth behind Engram, Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke isn’t too worried about the state of the tight end position in Jacksonville.

“We’re going to look to build that room and get as strong as we can,” Baalke said of the team’s tight ends Thursday. “We don’t feel that it’s an absolute necessity to add to that room, but if there’s an opportunity to add to it, we will.”

Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer and Utah’s Dalton Kincaid have often been paired with the Jaguars in mock drafts; however, the team hasn’t done much to spend time with tight ends in the lead up to the draft.

On Thursday, Baalke told reporters that talks on a multi-year extension with Engram are trending in the right direction. Hammering out a deal with the former first-round pick would provide the Jaguars with some security at tight end, but coach Doug Pederson says that could also come from the other two on the roster.

“I’ve always tried to make our tight end room the best we can, whether we do it through the draft or free agency or trade of something of that nature,” Pederson said. “We still feel like Evan [Engram], Luke [Farrell], and Gerrit [Prince] right now, the three we have, we know we’ll bring guys in for camp and compete there. That’s a strong room.

“Yeah, there’s two young players there, but we’ve got a lot of high expectations for those players as well and they know that.”

The Jaguars haven’t drafted a tight end in the first two rounds since picking Marcedes Lewis with the 28th overall selection in 2006.

Jaguars TE Dan Arnold: ‘A lot of it was on us as playmakers’

“I think what a lot of people are going to not see is the amount of balls that we dropped.”

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Dan Arnold was only targeted twice Sunday — catching one of those passes for a 20-yard gain — but he said that he and the other pass catchers on the team deserve a lot of the blame for the offensive struggles against the Houston Texans.

“I think Trevor [Lawrence], you know, a lot is on his shoulders,” Arnold told 1010XL’s Mia O’Brien in the locker room after the loss. “I think what a lot of people are going to not see is the amount of balls that we dropped, myself included. And we gotta help him out more. There’s more stuff that we gotta be playmakers out in the field to do that stuff, to help him along.

“That’s the thing with Trevor … okay, he throws a pick in the red zone, whatever he’s like ‘Okay dude, let’s go score, we’re fine. We’ll get the ball back and we’ll go win this game.’ You see that leadership from the entire team, and he went through it all last year and a lot people put a lot of pressure on him last year with all the games that we were losing.

“He’s been through the ringer and he’ll be able to survive it just fine. I think more of its on us as pass catchers and everything, we’ve gotta be better and we’ve gotta help him out.”

Arnold, 27, was acquired by the Jaguars in a mid-season trade last year and quickly became a favorite target for Lawrence. But after catching 28 passes in eight games with the Jaguars last year, Arnold has been targeted just four times through five games in 2022 as he’s dropped behind other players, including Evan Engram, on the depth chart.

The Jaguars offense recorded 422 yards, but scored zero touchdowns in the 13-6 loss to the Texans.

Jaguars 2022 training camp preview: Tight ends

The Jags have a lot of new faces in their tight end room, but this may possibly be the most athletic group they’ve ever had.

With training camp just five days away, it’s time to start previewing every position on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster. We started with the quarterback position last week and the running back position a few days ago. Now, it’s time to move to another skill position in Doug Pederson’s offense, which is the tight end position.

The Jags currently have seven tight ends on the roster. Four of them are veterans, and three are undrafted free agents. Of the veterans, Evan Engram was a signing the team made this year in free agency, while the rest of the veterans are returning from last season. That means the Jags are entering camp with a total of four new additions to the tight end room, which has been overhauled completely these last two seasons.

Here is a preview of the Jags’ full tight end room as we close in on ca
