Panthers’ offensive line largely absent during Wednesday’s practice

The Panthers may have to look to a pair of rookies to start on the interior in Week 14 against the Falcons.

It’s bad enough that the Carolina Panthers’ offensive line is, well, bad. But it’s better to be bad and present than not present at all.

On Wednesday, fresh off their Week 13 bye, the Panthers practiced without a handful of interior linemen. That bunch included starting guards John Miller and Michael Jordan as well as Trent Scott, who was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list this past Monday.

Here’s the first return of the injury report ahead of Carolina’s Week 14 clash with the Atlanta Falcons:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
G John Miller Ankle DNP
G Michael Jordan Hamstring DNP
DT DaQuan Jones Non-injury DNP

Following the practice, head coach Matt Rhule told reporters that Miller is probably out for Sunday. The seventh-year veteran has missed four games, including a trio from an injured reserve stint from Weeks 8 to 10, due to his ankle injury.

Rhule, additionally, believes there’s a “small possibility” that Jordan suits up. If he and/or Miller are not active, that’ll leave the opportunities on the interior open to Dennis Daley—who will likely be supplanted at left tackle by a returning Cameron Erving—and rookies Brady Christensen and Deonte Brown.

Panthers Week 12 injury report: G John Miller doubtful vs. Dolphins

On Friday, Panthers HC Matt Rhule said Trent Scott will likely get the start at RG with John Miller still dealing with an ankle injury.

The Carolina Panthers have utilized eight different starting offensive line combinations over their 11 games in 2021. And while that number will likely remain at eight this Sunday, the continuity of the group is set to take another swerve.

Right guard John Miller did not participate in Friday’s practice ahead of the team’s Week 12 matchup with the Miami Dolphins. The seventh-year veteran, who is still working through the ankle sprain that landed him on the injured reserve, has been listed as doubtful.

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
G Dennis Daley Glute Full Full Full
CB Myles Hartsfield Wrist DNP Full Full
G John Miller Ankle Limited DNP DNP Doubtful
DT DaQuan Jones Knee Full Full

Head coach Matt Rhule stated on Friday that Trent Scott will take over those duties on the interior barring a change in Miller’s status. Scott had already filled in at right guard in Weeks 8 through 10.

Miller returned from his IR stint this past week against the Washington Football Team. But, despite playing in each of the offense’s 51 snaps, he probably won’t be able to go on that ankle in Miami.

Rhule also told reporters that Dennis Daley, who was a full participant on Friday, will once again start at left tackle.

Panthers G John Miller does not participate in Thursday’s practice

It was a low-key Thanksgiving practice for Panthers RG John Miller, who went from a limited participant on Wednesday to a DNP today.

2021 continues to be an uncomfortable ride for Carolina Panthers offensive lineman John Miller. So, hopefully, there’s a better repair shop for him along the way.

Until then, the seventh-year veteran will have to deal with another setback to his ankle, which kept him out of Thursday’s practice. Today’s lack of participation for Miller, obviously, is a downgrade from Wednesday’s limited appearance.

Here’s how the Thanksgiving edition of the injury report looked for the team:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
G Dennis Daley Glute Full Full
CB Myles Hartsfield Wrist DNP Full
G John Miller Ankle Limited DNP
DT DaQuan Jones Knee Full

Miller had just made his comeback in Week 11 following a three-game absence due to that bothersome ankle. He got the start at right guard against the Washington Football Team upon his return and played in all 51 of the offense’s snaps.

We’ll see, amongst an otherwise clean bill of health, how Miller’s status develops heading into Miami.

Panthers Week 11 inactives: John Miller active, gets start at RG

Panthers RG John Miller is active and will get his starting spot back in Week 11 vs. Washington.

The Carolina Panthers’ offensive line pitched a shutout in their Week 10 upset win over the Arizona Cardinals, allowing zero sacks of either Cam Newton or P.J. Walker. Now, they’re getting a little relief this afternoon against the Washington Football Team.

Less than 24 hours after officially being activated, John Miller will be in uniform and will get the start back at right guard for the unit. He will take over for Trent Scott, who held down the duties on the interior last week.

Miller, thanks to a bothersome ankle, is fresh off a three-week stint on the injured reserve. He’ll slot in alongside left tackle Dennis Daley, left guard Michael Jordan, center Pat Elflein and right tackle Taylor Moton.

Here’s who won’t be slotting into anything for the Panthers today:

QB Matt Barkley
WR Shi Smith
S Kenny Robinson
CB Rashaan Melvin
DT Phil Hoskins

And for Washington, we won’t be seeing a few of old friends in action today:

WR Curtis Samuel
TE Ricky Seals-Jones
DE Shaka Toney
OT Saahdiq Charles
WR Antonio Gandy-Golden
CB Corn Elder

Panthers activate G John Miller, place CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III on IR

On Saturday, the Panthers officially activated G John Miller while placing CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III on the IR.

The Carolina Panthers have to be feeling pretty good about their offensive right about now. (Boy, who ever thought anyone would be saying that in 2021?)

Anyway, amidst the unit playing its best football all season, the team announced on Saturday that right guard John Miller has been officially activated. Miller, who was designated to return earlier this week, is fresh off his three-week stint on the injured reserve.

In addition to the ankle injury that’s kept him out since Week 8, Miller missed the season opener after testing positive for COVID-19. Whether the seventh-year lineman reclaims his starting spot for the Week 11 matchup with the Washington Football Team is still, however, up in the air.

“He’s working on getting his wind back, getting himself back into playing shape.” head coach Matt Rhule said of Miller’s status during his Friday presser. “It’s only been one week for him of practicing.”

If Miller isn’t on the field to kick off Sunday’s tilt, Trent Scott is expected to take over those duties at right guard once again.

To make room for Miller, the Panthers placed cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III on the injured reserve with a toe issue. He was listed as questionable for the game after a limited practice on Friday’s injury report.

Panthers place RG John Miller on IR, waive P Ryan Winslow

The Panthers made a handful of roster moves on Tuesday, including the placement of starting RG John Miller on the IR.

Carolina Panthers starting right guard John Miller has had a bumpy ride here in 2021. And although he’s been repeatedly heralded as one, tough customer by head coach Matt Rhule, the 6-foot-3, 315-pounder won’t find a way to grind through this one.

Miller exited Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants after sustaining what Rhule described on Monday as a “pretty bad ankle sprain.” That sprain has now been determined to be serious enough for an injured reserve stint.

The team announced the placement of Miller on the IR Tuesday. He will miss, at least, the next three games.

This latest absence will force the Panthers to, once again, rework their offensive line. If starting left guard Pat Elflein—who has yet to be activated after wrapping up his stay on IR—is still not good to go himself, that’ll complicate the matter even more for an already struggling unit.

Rookie Brady Christensen, Michael Jordan, Dennis Daley and/or Trent Scott will be the team’s options in filling one or perhaps both of those guard positions.

The Panthers, additionally, have waived punter Ryan Winslow. The 27-year-old played in the last two games for Carolina, totaling 13 punts for an average of 38.6 yards per attempt.

As a result, they’ve signed Lachlan Edwards—now the current favorite to take over punting duties starting in Week 8—to the practice squad. Kicker Dominik Eberle was released to make room for Edwards.

Panthers PFF grades: Best and worst from Week 7 vs. Giants

If you think it couldn’t get any worse following the Panthers’ benching of Sam Darnold in Week 7, well . . .

The Carolina Panthers probably had you all going after that first drive on Sunday, didn’t they? A fairly solid opening possession leading to a 45-yard field goal against a 1-5 mess of a team . . . all good, right?

Well, no. A big “no,” in fact.

Everything went downhill from there for the Panthers and this week’s review from Pro Football Focus proves there was almost nothing to write home about.

Panthers bench QB Sam Darnold, rule out RG John Miller vs. Giants

The Panthers pulled out the hook on QB Sam Darnold in the middle of his abysmal Week 7 performance.

Carolina Panthers starting right guard John Miller hasn’t had the healthiest of seasons here in 2021. He’s gone from contracting COVID-19 to dealing with with a shoulder injury to, now, this . . .

Miller, who sustained an ankle injury in the Week 7 matchup with the New York Giants, was initially ruled as “questionable” to return to start the fourth quarter. Minutes later, however, the seventh-year veteran had his afternoon officially ended.

As he already has for Miller this year, Daley subbed in at right guard. Daley, though, would also get the hook in favor of Trent Scott shortly after.

The most notable hook, however, came to snatch quarterback Sam Darnold away from that battered offensive line. Darnold, who turned in yet another abysmal outing, completed 16 of his 25 throws for 111 yards, no scores and an ugly interception.

Backup P.J. Walker came into the contest in relief at the 12:41 mark of the fourth with the Panthers trailing 15-3.

Panthers injury updates: RB Christian McCaffrey returns to practice

The Panthers may have star RB Christian McCaffrey back sooner than expected.

If you thought the only good news for the Carolina Panthers on the day would be their trade for cornerback Stephon Gilmore, well, we’ve got another tasty serving for you.

Not only will the team soon have the 2019 AP Defensive Player of the Year available to them, but it appears as though they may also have star rusher Christian McCaffrey back quicker than expected. McCaffrey, who was initially expected to miss at least a few weeks, returned to practice on Wednesday ahead of the Week 5 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Although listed as a limited participant, the two-time All-Pro “looked good” according to head coach Matt Rhule. He may, as alluded to by Rhule as well, end up being a game-time decision come Sunday.

Here are the rest of the injury updates from the afternoon:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
LB Shaq Thompson Foot DNP
T Cameron Erving Neck DNP
RB Christian McCaffrey Hamstring Limited
DE Yetur Gross-Matos Ankle Full
G John Miller Shoulder Full
OLB Haason Reddick Neck Full

In more good news, Reddick and Miller seem to be alright after their brief scares in the Week 4 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Gross-Matos also appears in line to play after missing the last two games with an ankle sprain.

Thompson, however, did not participate as expected with Erving joining him. Rookie Brady Christensen and fourth-year veteran Trent Scott took snaps in place of Erving at left tackle during practice.

Panthers Week 4 injury report: Gross-Matos doubtful, Miller questionable

The Panthers have officially ruled out RB Christian McCaffrey for Week 4. But how is the rest of the report looking heading into their matchup with the Cowboys?

Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey has been officially ruled out of Sunday’s matchup with the Dallas Cowboys due to his strained hamstring. So now that bit of expected news is out of the way, let’s get to the actual developments . . .

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game Status
RB Christian McCaffrey Hamstring DNP DNP DNP Out
DE Yetur Gross-Matos Ankle Limited Limited Limited Doubtful
G John Miller Shoulder Limited Limited Limited Questionable
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. Thumb Full Full Full
CB C.J. Henderson Groin Full Full Full
DT Phil Hoskins Non-injury DNP DNP Limited
OT Cameron Erving Knee Full Full
LB Shaq Thompson Back Full Full
WR Shi Smith Non-injury DNP

The two players of the most concern this week are Gross-Matos and Miller. Despite seemingly progressing a bit on Friday, Gross-Matos’ rolled ankle will very likely keep him out for a second straight game.

Miller, on the other hand, is much closer to the field. Head coach Matt Rhule did express some concern regarding the Week 4 availability of his starting right guard, saying he could be a game-time decision, but did describe him as one of the toughest guys he knows.

Additionally, the exclusion of any game status designations for Thompson, Erving, Henderson and Marshall Jr. are all, obviously, signs that they’ll be in uniform at AT&T Stadium.
