Panthers work out LB Jermaine Carter Jr. on Monday

Per NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Panthers worked out LB Jermaine Carter Jr. on Monday.

The Carolina Panthers just brought in an old friend.

Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the team worked out linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. on Monday. The 28-year-old defender played four seasons in Charlotte, a run that ended after the 2021 campaign.

That tenure for Carter Jr. began as a fifth-round pick in 2018. The Fort Washington, Md. native and University of Maryland product, who was college teammates with future Panthers teammate DJ Moore, was drafted with the 161st overall selection.

Carter Jr. appeared in 65 games with 30 starts for Carolina. He recorded 178 combined tackles (eight for a loss), two fumble recoveries, two passes defensed and half a sack.

The Panthers watched Carter Jr. walk in free agency in the spring of 2022. He would then land with the Kansas City Chiefs later that summer and go on to play in seven regular-season games for the Cleveland Browns.

Given the expected signing of Blake Martinez, however, there may not be a reunion on the horizon.

10 Browns free agents remain unsigned heading into OTAs

10 members of the 2022 Browns have yet to find a new home in free agency.

The Cleveland Browns dramatically overhauled their defense this offseason. From the hiring of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to the signing of defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson to the trade for Za’Darius Smith, the Browns addressed a bleeding issue from a year ago. This means, however, that means players from the 2022 roster have parted ways as well, including the likes of running back Jadeveon Clowney and running back Kareem Hunt.

With OTAs underway as well, both Hunt and Clowney have yet to find a new home in free agency. They are not the only two, however, as there are a total of 10 players from Cleveland’s 2022 roster that remain unsigned as the offseason progresses.

Browns fill empty roster spot left by Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, add 2 to practice squad

The Browns have filled the roster spot left by Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah

After placing linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah on Injured Reserve with a season-ending foot injury, they had a roster spot to fill. Today, they have signed fellow linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. from their practice squad to the active roster. Carter has been a frequent player on gameday, exhausting his practice squad elevations. He now may get a chance to play some defensive reps as the Browns evaluate young talent with no playoffs to play for.

In addition, the Browns have made the Storey Jackson addition to their practice squad official, as well as adding speedy wide receiver Marquez Stevenson to their reserve unit as well.

Chiefs to release LB Jermaine Carter Jr.

The #Chiefs are releasing LB Jermaine Carter Jr. during their 53-man roster cuts.

The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing one of their free agent additions at linebacker this offseason.

As first reported by KC Star columnist Sam McDowell, the Chiefs are releasing LB Jermaine Carter in their cut down to 53 players. A former fifth-round pick by the Panthers in 2018, has spent his first four seasons with Carolina. Carter made 17 starts in 2021, totaling 88 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery in 17 games.

Carter signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs during free agency. His release will cost the team $1.7 million in dead cap space.

During training camp and the preseason, Carter struggled to catch on. He didn’t look comfortable at any time during the preseason on the defensive side of the ball and he was out-snapped by other linebackers on special teams. He didn’t make the decision tough on the front office outside of the contract he was given.

This move should solidify a roster spot for LB Darius Harris, the former undrafted free agent from Middle Tennessee in 2019. He played his way onto the roster with strong performances on special teams and as the backup MIKE linebacker. It also shows the growth they’ve seen from rookie LB Leo Chenal during the course of the offseason.

Former Panthers LB Jermaine Carter Jr. signs with Chiefs

After four years with the Panthers, LB Jermaine Carter Jr. is off to help the Chiefs do battle inside the death group known as the AFC West.

The Carolina Panthers have taken care of a few of their own free-agent defenders this week—including safety Juston Burris and cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Rashaan Melvin. Linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr., however, didn’t get the same treatment.

Instead, the 27-year-old is headed off to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft—alongside fellow Maryland Terrapin DJ Moore—Carter Jr. has spent each of his four professional campaigns in Carolina. Over that time, he’s totaled 178 combined tackles, 0.5 sack, five quarterback hits and a pair of fumble recoveries.

Carter Jr. took the biggest step of his NFL tenure this past season, when he was anointed the defense’s starting middle linebacker following an eye-opening summer. The backer, in turn, started in each of the team’s 17 games in 2021, chalking 88 tackles in the process.

With the Panthers’ signings of Damien Wilson and Cory Littleton in the days prior, Carter Jr. was unlikely to return to the organization. He has, however, found himself quite an opportunity with an AFC powerhouse.

Chiefs are signing LB Jermaine Carter Jr.

The Chiefs are making an intriguing addition to their linebacker room with the signing of Jermaine Carter Jr.

The Kansas City Chiefs are signing former Carolina Panthers linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr., according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Kansas City recently hosted Carter on a visit, and it didn’t take long for them to lock him down.

Carter, a former fifth-round pick by the Panthers in 2018, has spent his first four seasons with Carolina. While he’s appeared in 30 career NFL games, he never got a start.

Last season with the Panthers, Carter totaled 88 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery in 17 games. Carter served as the weakside linebacker in Carolina, which is a role he figures to serve in Kansas City.

Carter projects to be a replacement for linebacker Ben Niemann, who remains a free agent.

Chiefs hosting Panthers free agent LB Jermaine Carter Jr. on a visit

The #Chiefs are hosting a linebacker on a visit who took a top-30 visit with the team in 2018.

The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting an intriguing free agent linebacker for a visit.

Former Carolina Panthers LB Jermaine Carter Jr. is heading to Kansas City for a visit according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Carter is a player that the Chiefs have been interested in since his days playing for the Maryland Terrapins. He was one of the players the team hosted on a top-30 visit ahead of the 2018 NFL draft.

The Panthers ended up drafting Carter in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft and he’s played there for the past four seasons. Carter has appeared in 30 career NFL games, but he’s never made a start. Last season in Carolina, Carter had 88 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one pass defended and one fumble recovery in 17 games played. Carter played WILL linebacker and played in the Panthers’ nickel and big nickel looks. That means the Chiefs could view him as a replacement for LB Ben Niemann who remains a free agent.

The Chiefs aren’t the only team in the running for Carter’s services, with multiple teams reportedly showing interest as of March 22. If they’re going to want to land his services, it’d be wise to close the deal once he’s in town.

LB Jermaine Carter Jr. reportedly being pursed by multiple teams

Jermaine Carter Jr. probably won’t be back with the Panthers in 2022, but reportedly has the attention of a few teams looking for a new middle linebacker.

Given the fluid state of the organization at the moment, the Carolina Panthers could certainly benefit from some type of continuity. But it doesn’t look like they’ll be getting it from the middle of their defense.

According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. is currently being pursued by multiple teams out on the open market. Carter Jr. manned the Mike spot for Carolina this past season and, apparently, has gotten the attention of a few other front offices for his most recent body of work.

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound backer turned heads last summer, earning the respect and trust of the coaches on down while undertaking a new leadership role on the unit. Heck, even franchise legend Steve Smith Sr. couldn’t help but notice Carter Jr.’s rise up the ranks as he headed into his fourth pro campaign.

That recognition resulted in Carter Jr. starting in each of Carolina’s 17 games in 2021. He went on to amass career-highs across the board—posting 88 combined tackles (three for a loss), a fumble recovery and three quarterback hits.

With the Panthers already having signed Damien Wilson and Cory Littleton, it’s probably safe to assume the team’s fifth-round pick from 2018 won’t be back in 2022. But, even after a relatively disappointing year, Carter Jr. is very likely and deserving of another opportunity elsewhere.
