Jett Howard talks Franz Wagner, Caleb Houstan, and who he models his game after during Orlando Magic press conference

Really hope he excels there! #GoBlue

Jett Howard became the latest lottery pick from Michigan basketball when he was selected by the Orlando Magic with the No. 11 pick in the 2023 NBA draft this past Thursday.

Howard entered the draft after one season with the Wolverines where he averaged 14.2 points and shot over 36% from 3. The Magic have a crowded backcourt, but Howard should carve his way into playing time by being able to shoot the 3 — he can also play the ‘3’ if needed.

By selecting Howard, Orlando has now picked a Michigan player in the first round in three consecutive drafts. Two seasons ago, the Magic took Franz Wagner, and last year, Caleb Houstan was a first-round pick.

During his introductory press conference with the Magic, Howard was asked who he models his game after. He quickly told the media he studies the Phoniex Suns’ star, Devin Booker. But he also mentioned former Michigan players, Franz Wagner, and Caleb Houstan.

“Devin Booker, I would probably say just watching his game and studying his game,” Howard said. “Then on the roster, I’d probably say Franz (Wagner) and Caleb Houstan — Michigan guys. But honestly, I’m open to learning from anybody. I’m just a sponge at this point.”

The Wolverines have had six players drafted in the past three seasons, including Howard and Kobe Bufkin in this draft. Dating back to 2014, Michigan has had nine first-round selections.

Howard believes Michigan is sending so many players to the league because of the culture that is set in Ann Arbor. He believes it’s a testament to what the Wolverines are doing as a team.

“I don’t want to go on and on about Michigan, but I’d probably just say we’re high IQ dudes,” said Howard. “We understand how to play the game and how to think the game. That’s just kudos to the program and everyone that put us through that and helped us understand that. We have a culture down there, so I feel like that is probably why we are in this organization today.”

Howard will have some time to train with the Magic before playing in the NBA Summer League and will play with some former Wolverines on that roster.

What’s being said: NBA experts grade Jett Howard, Kobe Bufkin selections

What did you think of the picks? #GoBlue

Michigan basketball had a pair of first-round selections on Thursday night during the 2023 NBA draft.

Many experts believed Kobe Bufkin would be the first Wolverine off the board, but it was in fact, Jett Howard. The Orlando Magic took Howard with the No. 11 pick in the draft.

Not too far after Howard, sophomore Kobe Bufkin heard his name called with the No. 15 pick to the Atlanta Hawks. Bufkin has a little tougher path to playing time than Howard does though — or at least starting. Bufkin has Trae Young and Dejounte Murray ahead of him at both guard spots for now.

With Jett Howard & Kobe Bufkin going 11th and 15th, Michigan has multiple top-15 picks in a draft for the first time since 1994 (Juwan Howard & Jalen Rose).

We are going to show you what different NBA draft experts thought of the selections and the grades that were given to the Magic and Hawks for selecting the Michigan duo.

Twitter reactions: Michigan’s Jett Howard was selected in the 2023 NBA draft

Atta boy! #GoBlue

Juwan Howard has the pleasure of coaching both of his sons: Jace and Jett. Jace is still with Michigan, but Jett Howard played one season with the maize and blue before entering the NBA draft.

Howard came to Michigan as a four-star recruit and the 43rd-ranked prospect in the 2022 cycle, according to the Composite. During his lone season with the Wolverines, the 6-foot-8 guard/forward had a solid season. He averaged 14.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, two assists, and shot 36.8% from 3.

The youngest Howard was limited to 29 games due to the injury bug. But when healthy, Howard showed the promise he has as an elite 3-point shooter. NBA scouts really love that about his game and it explains why he was selected in the first round.

After Howard was selected by the Orlando Magic with the No. 11 pick in the 2023 NBA draft on Thursday, Twitter went nuts.

Here are the best Twitter reactions after Howard was selected.

Jett Howard first Big Ten player selected in 2023 NBA draft

The Wolverines’ NBA team! #GoBlue

It wasn’t quite the prolific season that Jett Howard had hoped for, but he did have one year to be coached by his father, Michigan basketball head coach Juwan Howard, at the college level.

Jett Howard was a high-profile recruit coming out of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, and while he was a Michigan legacy, he strongly considered Tennessee before ultimately coming to Ann Arbor. His talent was obvious, but he was often stymied by a rash of injuries as well as streaky play. However, he was undeniable when fully healthy.

Michigan knew that in the younger Howard brother (Juwan’s other son, Jace, is a forward on the team) that it likely had a one-year rental, and that ended up being the case as he entered the NBA draft after his freshman campaign.

Howard averaged 14.2 points per game in 29 games, along with 2.8 rebounds and 2 assists a game. He appeared live in Brooklyn for the 2023 NBA draft and that paid off, as the shooting guard was selected in the first round by the Orlando Magic at No. 11 overall — making him a lottery pick.

He joins former Wolverines Moe and Franz Wagner who are currently on the Magic.

The profile from NBA.com on Howard:

Overview

Jett Howard is the son of Juwan Howard, a former NBA All-Star, who coached him at Michigan. Howard started 28 of his 29 appearances as a one-and-done freshman, averaging 14.2 points (on 41/37/80% shooting splits), 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 31.7 minutes per game. Those numbers earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Third Team and the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. He posted season highs of 34 points, seven 3-pointers, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and four blocks. Before college, Howard was a four-star recruit and was invited to both the Jordan Brand Classic and Iverson Roundball Classic.

Analysis

Howard is first and foremost a 3-point shooter, whether it be off of standstill catch-and-shoots or even movement with the basketball. He can also pump-fake and drive into mid-rangers and floaters, but if help defense pushes up, his passing ability helps create good looks for his teammates. Howard’s good length for a wing allows him to shoot over contests.

Projection

Howard’s ability to knock down 3-pointers and be a secondary playmaker could make him a plug-and-play option for most teams, especially those in need of perimeter shooting off the bench. His game is comparable to a more 3-point oriented Chandler Parsons or a bigger Tim Hardaway Jr. Teams can run plays for Howard, or he can find action in the flow of the game — both of which are useful in the NBA.

With Howard out of the picture, Michigan will need someone with shooting prowess to step up to the plate this upcoming season. It continues to look to the NCAA transfer portal for such a player, but perhaps will be able to rely on former Vols guard Olivier Nkamkhoua, who was a late add this offseason.

Where Jett Howard, Kobe Bufkin go in ESPN’s latest 2023 NBA mock draft

Stoked to see where they end up tonight! #GoBlue

It’s NBA draft day and it will all take place at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

On Thursday morning, ESPN updated their 2023 NBA mock draft ($) and per usual, both Michigan basketball players find themselves in the first round.

In this mock draft, Kobe Bufkin — the first Wolverine taken — finds himself going 13th overall to the Toronto Raptors. It’s noted in the excerpt that speculation is Bufkin was promised to go to Toronto if available.

The Raptors have a plethora of options at their disposal that could see them end up anywhere on draft night — higher up in the lottery, with another pick in the mid-to-late first round — or possibly out altogether. Picking a shooter such as Dick or Jordan Hawkins, or pairing franchise stalwart Scottie Barnes with a versatile combo guard such as Bufkin, Nick Smith Jr. or Hood-Schifino are believed to be some of their most likely options, according to rival teams. However, the amount of activity coming out of the Toronto front office makes it difficult to project what they will do. Bufkin’s fit with Barnes because of his experience playing off the ball, defensive tenacity and much-improved shooting has caused many to speculate that the Raptors are the ones who promised Bufkin this pick, and he indeed finds himself as the pick in this scenario.

Bufkin’s name continues to rise in NBA mock drafts and the NBA circle. He had a fantastic sophomore season averaging 14 points per game and shooting 35.5% from behind the arc. He left after his sophomore season and I’m not sure Bufkin’s draft grade could get much higher than it is right now. It sounds like a real possibility Bufkin goes in the lottery.

Jett Howard finds himself just a few picks after Bufkin and right outside the lottery. The Los Angeles Lakers take Howard in this mock at No. 17.

Howard is said to be part of a group of options that include Lively, Smith and Noah Clowney, three of whom are available in this scenario. Coming off a run to the Western Conference finals, the Lakers can be opportunistic about where they are positioned on draft night. Several high-level prospects are likely to be available here, allowing them to either add a talented young player to their core or make an impactful trade to remain competitive heading into next season. Should they stand pat, adding a shooter with size, feel and pedigree such as Howard makes a lot of sense with their current roster configuration.

It feels like Howard’s name is all over the place in mock drafts. I’ve seen some mocks where he goes toward the end of the lottery and others where he drops into the 20s. Howard had a solid freshman season with Michigan, but unlike Bufkin, his draft stock could be higher. He averaged 14.2 points while shooting 36.8% from 3.

Stay tuned to see where both get selected in the 2023 NBA draft. Wolverines Wire will have you covered when Bufkin and Howard get selected.

Where Kobe Bufkin and Jett Howard go in the final USA TODAY Sports NBA mock draft

Excited to see where they go on Thursday!

We are two days away from the 2023 NBA draft. Two Michigan basketball players will hear their names called on Thursday, and both Kobe Bufkina and Jett Howard appear to be first-round locks.

On Tuesday morning, USA TODAY Sports released their final NBA mock draft.

We have been seeing Bufkin’s name ranging as high as No. 9 or No. 10 down to No. 15 or No. 16 in mock drafts. In this particular mock, Bufkin is headed to the Atlanta Hawks at No. 15.

A second year in college proved to be huge for Bufkin, who can score from all over and is especially good at attacking the rim and finishing through contact. He’s a tough on-ball defender, too.

The 6-foot-5 guard left Michigan after his breakout sophomore campaign. He averaged 14 points per game and became the Wolverines’ go-to guy toward the end of the season.

Michigan freshman Jett Howard’s name comes up in different places in mock drafts. We’ve seen Howard mentioned anywhere from outside the lottery to the end of the first round. But in this mock, he goes to the Brooklyn Nets with the 21st pick.

A versatile playmaker who loves the pressure of a big moment and has a high basketball IQ, Jett is the son of former NBA All-Star and Michigan coach Juwan Howard.

Howard was plagued with injuries during his lone season in Ann Arbor, but he sure did flash with talent. He averaged 14.2 points per game and shot 36.8% from 3. Howard is bound to improve on his 3 in the NBA and may be known as a knock-down 3-point shooter.

Where Kobe Bufkin, Jett Howard are projected to land in latest ESPN 2023 NBA mock draft

Both of them should be first-round picks!

We are just over a week away from the 2023 NBA draft which is held on Thursday, June 22.

The Wolverines have two players that have a high chance of becoming first-round selections next Thursday evening. Both Kobe Bufkin and Jett Howard received green room invites and are projected as the top 19 players in the draft.

With the draft getting closer and closer draft analysts are starting to finalize their mock drafts. ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremey Woo updated their mock draft on Tuesday.

Sophomore Kobe Bufkin lands in the lottery in this updated mock. He is selected No. 12 overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Bufkin has quietly gathered a good deal of interest in the pre-draft process and is being extremely selective where he works out, with a lottery selection potentially on the horizon. The Thunder have plenty of young guards and can go in a number of directions at No. 12, but Oklahoma City rarely hesitates to grab the best talent on the board, and Bufkin has built a strong case to be the first player drafted among a large group of guards jockeying for position. He’s a name to watch over the next week, with room to potentially rise higher. Washington and Utah appear to be candidates to select guards at No. 8 and No. 9.

Bufkin left Michigan after having a sensational sophomore campaign. The 6-foot-4 guard became the go-to guy for the Wolverines toward the end of the season and averaged 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Bufkin shot 35% from 3 in 2022 and has the capabilities of improving in that area to become a deep threat in the NBA.

Jett Howard’s name slips a little in this mock draft. The ESPN crew has Howard going No. 19 to the Golden State Warriors.

Howard’s draft range starts around No. 11 (Orlando), with plenty of teams looking for shooters with size, skill and feel that will likely consider him, including Toronto (No. 13), Utah (No. 16), and the Lakers (No. 17). He’s an extreme contrast in ability, from what he showed early in the season until late of it when he played through an injury. If not Howard, the Warriors could look at other prospects who fit their style of play. The appetite for taking on more projects will likely be limited due to their narrow window for maximizing the prime of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and others. Sources tell ESPN the Warriors are also exploring the option of acquiring a high draft pick in exchange for a young prospect such as Jonathan Kuminga.

Howard left after his freshman season in Ann Arbor. He averaged 14.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and two assists per game. Howard played in 29 games due to injury and shot 36% from 3. The Warriors would be a good spot for the youngest Howard to fit his style of play. Howard has the ability to become a knockdown 3-point shooter in the NBA and what team would be better to fit that style other than the Warriors?

Jett Howard, Kobe Bufkin receive NBA draft green room invites

Awesome that they both will be attendance on a special night!

ESPN’s Jonathan Givony reported on Tuesday there were 19 players who received invites to attend the NBA draft green room. Which means players will be in attendance for the 2023 NBA draft on June 22.

Two of the players invited are Michigan basketball players, Kobe Bufkin and Jett Howard. The 19 players invited are the top 19 projected picks in the draft  in June. While it’s never a guaranteed thing, chances are high for both Bufkin and Howard to be first-round selections in the draft.

Bufkin left school after his breakout sophomore campaign last season. He averaged 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 2022. Bufkin became a go-to scorer for the maize and blue down the stretch.

Howard was a one-and-done player at Michigan. The freshman averaged 14.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and two assists per game with the Wolverines. Howard played in 29 games due to injuries hampering him.

Each player is allowed to invite 10 people to sit with them in the green room.

The 19 players invited to the green room:

Victor Wembanyama

Brandon Miller

Scoot Henderson

Amen Thompson

Ausar Thompson

Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson headline players invited to NBA draft green room

The top prospects are beginning to receive invitations to attend the 2023 NBA draft from the green room at Barclays Center.

With less than two weeks to go until the 2023 NBA draft, the top prospects are receiving invitations to attend the festivities in the green room at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Teams each year vote on the players they believe will be drafted early, typically the top 20-25 prospects. Last year, 24 players were invited to the green room and only one player wasn’t drafted in the first round (Jaden Hardy).

[lawrence-related id=89060]

The first two batches of invitations have been dispatched to prospects with 19 players on the initial lists, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN. There will likely be at least one more group invited based on teams’ final rankings and player availability.

Here is the list of players invited to the draft green room.
