Florida State announces plans to retire Jameis Winston’s college jersey

Florida State announced plans to retire Jameis Winston’s college jersey at Saturday’s game versus North Alabama:

Now this is cool: Florida State announced plans to retire Jameis Winston’s college jersey at Saturday’s game versus North Alabama, recognizing the New Orleans Saints quarterback for his accomplishments in Tallahassee. Winston led the school to a 14-0 record and a Rose Bowl win back in 2013, setting the stage for a College Football Playoff run in his 2014 sophomore season.

Winston only played two years at Florida State, but he left with the fourth-most career passing yards (7,964) and second-most touchdown passes (65) in school history, plus a 26-1 record.

And now, a decade since he turned pro, Winston will see the jersey he wore honored in an exclusive group. He’s just the eleventh player to earn this recognition at Florida State, joining the likes of Fred Biletnikoff, Derrick Brooks, Terrell Buckley, Warrick Dunn, Marvin Jones, Deion Sanders, Ron Sellers, Ron Simmons, Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke.

Good for him. Winston’s jersey will be retired in a ceremony at the end of the first quarter in Saturday’s home game at Doak S. Campbell Stadium. It’s also senior night, and kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT with television coverage on The CW network.

Jason Pierre-Paul picked a unique new jersey number to wear with the Saints

Jason Pierre-Paul picked a unique new jersey number to wear with the Saints, representing his fourteenth year in the NFL:

The newest member of the New Orleans Saints has made a unique choice for his jersey number: Jason Pierre-Paul announced his formal signing with the Saints practice squad on Tuesday, including an edited photo showing the pass rusher in his new uniform, featuring the No. 14 jersey. Pierre-Paul said it’s to represent his 14th year in the NFL in a post from his official Instagram account.

Though it isn’t reflected on the team’s website roster (where Pierre-Paul is not yet listed at all), this means that Pierre-Paul will be designated as a linebacker, even if he primarily plays defensive end. The No. 14 jersey only recently became available for linebackers and defensive backs after being limited to offensive players, kickers, and punters. If Pierre-Paul were listed as a defensive end, the only other options for him would have been Nos. 59, 60, 61, 63, 65, 66, 69, 72, 76, and 79. For the most part, those are all thoroughly swaggerless.

Pierre-Paul wore No. 4 with the Baltimore Ravens last year; before that, he had only used No. 90 in the NFL and in college at USF. He wore No. 91 at College of the Canyons in California and No. 9 at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas after using No. 98 at Deerfield Beach High School in Florida.

So he’ll be using No. 14 for the first time in his football career. Former Saints quarterback Andy Dalton used it last season after running back Mark Ingram II wore it a year before; the number fell in disuse for decades until wide receiver Tommylee Lewis brought it back in 2020. Let’s hope Pierre-Paul wears it well.

Pro Football Hall of Fame displays Taysom Hill’s gear after historic game

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is displaying Taysom Hill’s game-worn gear on exhibit after the do-it-all dynamo reached a historic milestone:

Now this is cool: the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced a new exhibit on Tuesday featuring New Orleans Saints do-it-all dynamo Taysom Hill. Hill recently became just the second player in NFL history to score at least 25 rushing touchdowns while catching 10 touchdown receptions and throwing 10 touchdown passes.

New York Giants Hall of Famer Frank Gifford is the only other player to accomplish that, so Hill is in rare company. A handful of other players have scored 10 or more times as a passer, runner, and receiver, but only Hill and Gifford have gone the distance here. Hill is up to 26 rushing touchdowns, 11 passing touchdowns and 10 receiving touchdowns in his career thus far. Gifford totaled 34, 14, and 43 touchdowns, respectively.

Hill’s game-worn jersey, play-call wristband, and cleats from Week 9’s win over the Chicago Bears are now on display in Canton. How’s that for impressive?

Pro Football Hall of Fame makes room for Saints star Taysom Hill

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is making room for Taysom Hill, asking the Saints for memorabilia from his historic performance against the Bears:

Now that’s something special. The New Orleans Saints announced Monday that the Pro Football Hall of Fame reached out to request memorabilia from Taysom Hill’s uniform after his historic performance against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Hill became just the fifth player in pro football history to have 10 passing touchdowns, 10 rushing touchdowns and 10 receiving touchdowns in a career. Hill’s touchdown catch against the Bears finally sealed the deal.

If you’re curious, Hill was the first player to do so since New York Giants great Frank Gifford accomplished the feat in 1957; according to ESPN, he’s now one of five players in the 10-10-10 club, along with Gifford; Charley Trippi, leader of the old Chicago Cardinals’ “Million Dollar Backfield”; Red Grange; and Jimmy Conzelman.

Those four have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Hill may not receive his own bronze bust (he doesn’t have the All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition of those old-school legends of the game), but his name and memorabilia will be in Canton for years to come. And that’s definitely worth celebrating.

Saints reveal uniform combination for Week 8 game vs. Colts

Saints reveal uniform combination for Week 8 game vs. Colts

There we go: the New Orleans Saints announced their uniform combination for Week 8’s road game against the Indianapolis Colts, choosing to wear white pants with their matching away jerseys. It’s a combo they’ve found plenty of success in before, going 11-5 in games while wearing it.

They’ll need the help to right the ship after losing four of their last five games. If you’re superstitious, here’s how this combination stacks up to others the Saints have worn since 2006 (not including the controversial gold jerseys used in a loss back in 2003):

Alpine driver Pierre Gasly spotted wearing Patrick Mahomes jersey

F1 driver Pierre Gasly was spotted donning a Patrick Mahomes jersey after the quarterback’s investment in the Alpine racing team this week.

Patrick Mahomes has made serious investments in the sports world since signing his massive second contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, and his latest endeavor put him on the world stage in a major way.

The reigning MVP and tight end Travis Kelce both put money into the Alpine Formula 1 team this week, which was met with both surprise and intrigue around the motorsports and football communities.

Alpine driver Pierre Gasly was spotted wearing a white Mahomes jersey on Wednesday in a picture posted to Twitter, marking a new era for the racing team as it prepares for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas this weekend.

Formula 1 is a global sport that holds races around the world, and Gasly’s eagerness to don a Mahomes jersey is sure to introduce the quarterback to fans on every continent who weren’t already aware of his accomplishments and success in the NFL.

Saints reveal uniform combo for Week 2 prime-time game vs. Panthers

The New Orleans Saints revealed their uniform combo for Week 2’s prime-time road game with the Carolina Panthers:

The New Orleans Saints just won their fiftieth game since 2006 while wearing black jerseys and matching black pants, so they’ll be looking to keep that going on Monday night against the Carolina Panthers. The team announced Friday that they’ll be using the same uniform combination as they wore for Week 1’s win over the Tennessee Titans in this Week 2 road trip to Charlotte.

Hey, it’s a good look. It’s also the most-common uniform they’ve used in the modern era of Saints football. If you’re curious, here are the win-loss records the Saints have achieved in each of their different uniform combos:

  1. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 3-1 (.750)
  2. White jerseys, white pants: 11-4 (.733)
  3. Black jerseys, gold pants: 24-15 (.615)
  4. White jerseys, black pants: 42-27 (.609)
  5. White jerseys, gold pants: 37-25 (.597)
  6. Black jerseys, black pants: 50-36 (.581)
  7. “Color Rush” alternates: 9-7 (.563)
  8. Black jerseys, white pants: 0-1 (.000)

Chiefs will wear patch commemorating Norma Hunt in 2023

The #Chiefs will wear a patch commemorating the late great Norma Hunt during their 2023 Super Bowl defense campaign.

The passing of Norma Hunt in June left a gaping hole in the hearts of Kansas City Chiefs fans across the country, and the team has decided to wear a jersey patch to commemorate her legacy during the 2023 season.

The white football-shaped patch has a red outline and bears Hunt’s initials “NKH”. The shape of the patch is of particular note, as it is the same as the one Kansas City wore in remembrance of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt in the mid-2000s.

Clearly, Norma Hunt’s legacy is something to be celebrated, and the team’s decision to tastefully remember her impact on its organization with this gesture is certainly laudable.

The patch is set to make its debut against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night at 7:20 p.m. when Kansas City will get its 2023 Super Bowl championship defense campaign underway at Arrowhead Stadium in the first game of the new NFL season.

Jamaal Williams, Foster Moreau among many Saints changing jersey numbers

Jamaal Williams and Foster Moreau are among many New Orleans Saints changing jersey numbers in the wake of last week’s roster cuts:

A small crowd of New Orleans Saints players are changing jersey numbers in the wake of roster cuts last week, which freed up a lot of coveted numbers — and some big names like running back Jamaal Williams and tight end Foster Moreau are among those making moves. So is rookie quarterback Jake Haener.

Here are all nine players who have switched numbers before the regular season kicks off:

Jake Haener changes his jersey number ahead of the 2023 season

Jake Haener will switch from the No. 14 jersey moving forward with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints’ third quarterback has picked a new number | @crissy_froyd

Here’s something New Orleans Saints fans haven’t seen in a while. Jake Haener, their team’s fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, has worn the No. 14 jersey throughout preseason but that’s something that will no longer continue.

Haener is switching to the No. 3 jersey; he’s the fourth quarterback on the 53-man roster behind Derek Carr, Jameis Winston, and Taysom Hill. Haener’s former jersey number at Fresno State (No. 9) is unavailable with the Saints, so that was not an option, leading him to go with his high school jersey number instead. New Orleans has unofficially retired No. 9 out of respect for legendary former Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

It’s been a long time since a Saints quarterback wore No. 3. Bobby Hebert used it from 1985 to 1992, and he is the only non-special teams player to ever wear the jersey number for New Orleans, making Haener just the second to so. Former Saints kicker Will Lutz, who now rejoins Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos, was the most recent Saints player to wear No. 3. Soon Haener will make it his own.
